When Sunny and Kibum had first met, they were both small children. Sunny was all wide eyes and curious questions. She was mature beyond her five year-old body. She had to be; an immature kid couldn’t follow around Jinkyu and Eunkyu, her two older sisters who were already old enough to experiment with boys and make-up (two things her daddy always said she couldn’t touch, even if she was as old as her siblings). On the other hand, Kibum was shy glances and quiet phrases. He was short for his age and barely met his mother’s waist. He never let go of the leg of his mother’s pants, and he sucked his thumb until he was three. Sunny never left home without her confidence and pig tails, and Kibum always his Buzz Lightyear toy tucked under his arm.

Sunny pulled Kibum’s hair as soon as she met him, but it was only because he didn’t share. He cried for the next fifteen minutes until she showed him how to fold paper crane with colorful paper. She didn’t tell him that her sisters taught her how though. “I just knew,” she told him as she held up the crane that stopped his blubbering.

They were friends after that.

Kibum lived on the next floor up from her, and her daddy showed her how to use the elevator when she was old enough. She played with Kibum whenever she wanted. Sunny wasn’t good at counting, but they must have folded a thousand different technicolor cranes. Kibum still kept the first.

Sunny went to the all-girl’s school, and Kibum the boy’s. By the time he turned sixteen, Kibum was sneaking Sunny onto his campus to do more than just fold paper cranes. They got caught once in the winter when Principal Lee followed their footprints out to the gymnasium in the fresh winter snows. Kibum hid Sunny in the equipment closet and talked his way out of expulsion. It’s funny, Sunny thought as she tossed a tennis ball against the wall as she waited for Kibum to come pick her up, how Kibum has all the words she no longer does. 

Kibum’s eighteen birthday came with a love interest that he didn’t really love and an expensive camera for his photography. Sunny sent a fake positive pregnancy test to get her Kibum back, laughing all the while as he breathed into a paper bag. She hadn’t meant to cause him to hyperventilate. Sunny didn’t think her Photoshop skills were that good. She won the words back that she always had. After all, she was the poet, not the photographer. 

They closed for an apartment together on Sunny’s twentieth birthday. It was close to their college and not nice at all, but Sunny took Kibum to the craft store and taught him how to sew. Kibum folded a paper crane to place on the shelves of poetry that surrounded their bed, and Sunny snapped a picture to remember forever.

The Early Temperocene: 125 million years post-establishment

Lemunkying Around: The Continent of South Ecatoria

South Ecatoria, a continent that separated from the main Ecatorian landmass before it fused with the supercontinent now known as Arcuterra, is located down south below the Arcuterran landmass. And like its polar opposite South Easaterra, this continent's inaccessibility made it a vital lifeboat of diversity during the brief but brutal reign of a cunning and cruel thinker.

With the end of the Glaciocene, South Ecatoria has flourished in the warm tropical clime. Its southern regions still bear temperate forest, while the northern regions are humid, tropical jungle. A vast array of trees grow here, primarily the descendants of the original colonizing citrus and stonefruit, but its understory is formed of a remarkable foliage: large, hardy weedwood grass, immigrants from the Arcuterran mainland, that, thanks to rigid woody stems, have grown big enough as to resemble small trees in their own right, though still beneath the shadow of the true trees that dominate the forest.

Further north, at the topmost coastline of the Arcuterran Strait, grows a new biome that combines forest and sea: the beachpeach forests. Beachpeach, a coastal stonefruit that tolerates salinity and prolonged submersion, fades seamlessly into the landlocked jungle that from an aerial view it appears as one continuous mass: yet, from the forest floor, the boundary could not be more obvious, as the forest floor very quickly gives way to deep water, and the land-type trees are replaced by the tall-rooted beachpeach from within about ten to twelve meters off the highest point of the water: where the soil is too saline for most land plants to grow.

Most terrestrial fauna here are descended from the wildlife of Lacero: a jungle subcontinent in the Therocene that connected to the Arcuterran mainland in the Glaciocene. As such, the forest floor, scrubland and plains of this continent are populated by basal hamtelopes, bumbaas and zingos both carnivorous and generalist omnivorous, as well as podotheres that had travelled from Arcuterra during low sea levels at the final big freeze concluding the late Glaciocene.

But this continent's abundant jungles and treetops are dominated by a vast, diverse array of lemunkies: arboreal, frugivorous tree-climbers with prehensile, opposable digits on both front and hind limbs. Descended from the tiny, long-tailed squizzels of the Rodentocene, of which hundreds of species of these basal forms still coexist with these derived members, the lemunkies thrive in the canopy of the Ecatorian forests, in dozens of different species occupying various niches in the trees and down below.

Basal lemunkies little different from their squizzel forebearers, such as the mouselets (Microprimatomys spp.) scurry about the treetops, feeding on insects, seeds and fruit and nesting in small holes gnawed into bark with their teeth. This primitive lineage does include more-unusual forms, such as the frugivorous looptails (Hemigymnocauda spp.) with bald-bottomed prehensile tails that act as a fifth limb when climbing on branches.

Some of the lemunky species, spreading out into unusual niches to ease competition, have began to conquer the beachpeach forests, feeding on the abundance of their juicy, buoyant fruits, especially the large seed inside which is rich in protein and fat. Some have become very agile swingers in the branches, a quick way to travel given that the floor is flooded shallow sea, with species like the ruddy kipling (Rhodopithecomys gracilis) possessing long fingers and flexible shoulders that allow it to swing at ease from tree to tree, seldom ever touching the ground on its own accord.

But another, more unusual lemunky lives a completely different life in the beachpeach forests: the diving sunkey (Thalassopithecomys submersii). This unusual, semi-aquatic lemunky has adapted to become a specialized swimmer, from living in a biome where tropical forest intermingles with shallow sea. Propelled by a paddle-like tail when swimming, the sunkeys are fond of beachpeach fruits both in the branches or floating and are still quite excellent tree climbers, despite their shorter limbs bearing webbed digits, though when danger threatens they drop out of the tree and into the water below. As they face threats from predators in the trees, such as treegers and falcyons, and in the water as well from small coastal cricetaceans and relic leviahams, their ability to freely escape from one medium to a very different one gives them a massive survival advantage when fleeing their enemies.

Further inland, a diverse array of lemunkies thrive in the thick tropical jungles. These lemunkies come in all shapes and sizes-- and indeed, even colors, as their excellent color vision has given favor to truly vibrant displays. One of the most colorful is the pastel primarate (Chromandroprimys dimorphis), whose social groups are segregated by sex, and only interact during mating. Females, having young to protect, are far more camouflaged and cooperate among their close kin in large groups to communally rear their young. Males, on the other hand, play little role in child-rearing and travel in smaller bands of less than ten individuals. The males display conspicuous red and yellow fur patterns contrasted by blue on their hairless paws, ears and faces, and while they stand out in the treetops, their coloration serves as a warning, for a group of males can viciously gang up on a predator if harassed.

While most lemunkies are predominantly frugivores or herbivores, one lineage of nocturnal species would instead become specialized near-obligate carnivores. Known as the moglins, these lemunkies, such as the gangly stripehawk (Megalotosimiomys gremii) are equipped with large eyes and ears to better see and hear prey in the dark, and long limbs wih sharp claws to leap from tree to tree to pounce on their quarry. Agile ambush hunters, their menu includes insects but also small rattiles, ratbats, squizzels and even smaller species of lemunkies such as mouselets and looptails, though, equally agile and evasive, are quite harder for even moglins to catch.

Most lemunkies are rather small, and few exceed five or six kilograms. However, one line, the large, omnivorous chimpmunks, can reach average sizes of forty kilograms or more. Even smaller chimpmunks, such as the malodorous tangerine chipskunk (Malodoromys stonke) can get as big as twenty pounds and capable of defending themselves in larger groups, through violent force if absolutely necessary, but more frequently through foul musk sprayed by the group as a whole to overwhelm predators' sensitive noses, which they advertise with striking coloration, warning cries, and even projectile launching of droppings.

The largest species of the chimpmunks, and indeed all lemunkies, is the white-bearded hamrambe (Pongomimus simianocricetus), with males growing to as heavy as two hundred kilograms at maximum. These powerful creatures, when fully grown, are all but immune to nearly all predators at peak health, but, surprisingly, are actually rather peaceful herbivores that forage on the forest floor and placid unless provoked. Adult males are typically solitary, living away from family groups of females and their young, while younger males travel in groups of three or four but gradually split up as they mature. The one exception to their usually laid-back lifestyles are when males compete over mates during the breeding season, where their full strength is on display, and with males sporting pronounced claws on their thumb and forefinger, they can inflict serious injury to an opponent: or even lethal damage to a smaller predator.

Indeed, being defensive is worth the while here in the Ecatorian jungles, as for an unwary lemunky the forest is fraught with danger. Predatory ratbats known as falcyons soar the skies, feeding mostly on other airborne ratbats, but will not hesitate to attack small lemunkies if they are in reach. And some arboreal shearwurms, tree-dwelling serpentine rattiles, can also pose a threat, especially venomous ones that can deliver an allergenic pseudo-venom through their front claws that can trigger deadly anaphylactic shock in small prey.

The biggest threat to the lemunkies, however, are their old Therocene enemies the treegers: cat-like relatives of the carnohams that specialized to hunt prey in the treetops, and lemunkies in particular. To better pursue their prey along branches, they too developed opposable grasping paws and flexible wrists and ankles that let them run vertically up and down tree trunks. Most are ambush predators, such as the soggy gangle (Pantherosimiomys pilosus) whose shaggy, mottled fur help break up its outline in the tangled branches of the upper canopy.

The treegers' large cousins the tigerillas have mostly disappeared on the mainland of Arcuterra by the Glaciocene's end. One species, the ruffed rath (Pongotigris appoplexus) still persists in the South Ecatorian forest floor, resembling its ancestor the bantor but now with a nearly-absent vestigial tail, as it now hunts primarily on the ground, walking on its knuckles to avoid blunting its claws. The ruffed rath, weighing up to three hundred pounds, is a chimpmunk specialist, and is notably one of the only natural enemies of the white-bearded hamrambe, able to take on adolescents, though certainly not full-grown males.

But most remarkable of all South Ecatoria's predators is the greater baskerville (Maximocynomys nigranasus), a large member of the zingo family roughly as big as a Great Dane, whose prominent front fang places it among the daggarats: a subclass of saber-toothed apex predators that ruled the Glaciocene, and some returned to a shorter-fanged small-game hunter niche known as the lycanines when forced out of the megafauna-hunter role by their cousins the double-fanged dark maulers and their modern descendants the chernadogs. As such, while the other daggarats focused on brawn, the short-fanged lycanines focused on brains: indeed, lycanines in general, and the baskerville in particular, are incredibly intelligent among zingos, following a trend ongoing since the Glaciocene-- paralleling the ripperroos of Mesoterra, their increased cognitive development allowes for more complex hunting tactics, pack communication and even problem-solving intelligence, ones that require cooperation, such as taking advantage of natural traps to catch small ground prey, such as the various hamtelopes, podotheres and bumbaas common on the forest floor.

But the baskervilles would differ from the ripperroos in one very important way: unlike the cannibalistic, sadistic ripperroo that eagerly killed its own kind, the baskervilles possessed something that the ripperroo, and its more-advanced descendants, entirely lacked: a strong sense of empathy towards members of their own species. Despite being fierce predators, they took great care of their own pack: watching over their younger siblings while their parents are out hunting, sharing meals amicably whenever a successful kill is made, and even providing food for their packmates who are too old to hunt on their own: partly due to their valuable experience, which they actively teach to young and learning pups, and partly simply due to their attachment to their kin, being highly social predators that become extremely stressed when alone. With social intelligence comes increasingly complex communication within the pack-- interestingly, despite their resemblance to dogs, their vocalizations are anything but canine, with a wide array of chirps, whistles, squeals and purrs serving as social signals to call their packmates' attention and send messages about food, danger, or companionship, and a distinctive call, somewhat reminescent to a louder, deeper, slowed-down version of a guinea pig's whistles, being a significant social vocalization that entire groups may do at once, in proclamations of territory and as an expression of their family bonds.
