#SWAW Day 1: Women in STEM

Day 1 of our second-ever Sloane Washington Appreciation Week begins TOMORROW!!

Tomorrow also happens to be (in most years) the International Day for Women and Girls in STEM, and what better way to celebrate this day, than to celebrate one of Choices' most illustrious scientists, Sloane Washington!! She's an inspiration in so many ways. Struggles with social anxiety, loves coding and astronomy, writes bomb science fiction!

She is also an inspiration to women and girls outside of her scientific pursuits. She's brave, smart, and more resilient than she thinks! Both her mother and her are amazing - and each of Sloane's relationships with the women in the group particularly - whether it's Nadia, Alana or f!Hayden - are rich with humour, affection and solidarity!! Which is why our second theme for today is Girl Power!!

Today, we celebrate Sloane as the girl who looked up to so many scientists, and the woman who will become the scientist so many girls will look up to! 🥰

Any and all creative works are welcome!! Fanfic, fanart, meta, edits, moodboards, playlists, headcanons, interactive media...even screenshots of your favourite scenes!! Our only requirement is that the pieces should be Sloane-centric and show a positive depiction of her!

We also welcome WIPs - we know that it can be difficult to complete pieces in a week, so if you've finished even a portion of the work and would like to present just that for now, do send it across and we'd be happy to include it!! We also keep the event open for entries the year around, though we do keep a deadline so we can make the appreciation video on time ❤️

A friendly reminder that these are merely themes for you to use. It isn't completely necessary for your content for a particular day to be posted on that day only. You can post something you intended for Day 2 when Day 5 is on, as long as you tag the post for the day you meant it for.

Tagging @sloanewashingtonappreciationweek and @sazanes for Day 1: Women in STEM, because this scene is inspiring me to write a fic about Scientific!Sloane baking macarons for someone she loves 😃 But in case I'm not able to finish it in time, here's that scene!

It takes place in PM1 Ch 16, if you choose to buy Sloane's diamond scene in Paris. She takes you to a patisserie called Le Soleil et La Lune ("the sun and the moon", how fitting!!), where you sample macarons and religieuse. What I really love about this scene - and Sloane's scenes in general - is that science isn't just a professional interest, or restricted to big, world-altering discoveries. Sloane finds science in the little things too, and that's what makes it a true interest for her. It's just the way her mind works 🥰

Year three, let's go!!! Look... look... look at me. Look at me. Look me in the eye and tell me that MOTY MC's daughter would not adore Sloane. That's right you can't because you know damn well it's true. After her reformation of Eros, Sloane's popularity among girls interested in STEM careers goes through the roof. I can see her judging various science competitions around the US in order to encourage and inspire other girls, so I've drawn the outcome of one of those experiences here.

Welcome to our third edition of Sloane Washington Appreciation Week!! This gorgeous, adorable, kick-ass, incredibly relatable woman with her love for science, her admiration for ambitious, knowledgeable women and her endless capacity for bravery - she's been such an integral part of the Perfect Match story 💜

Every year, we try to celebrate her around Feb 11th, which is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This year's themes are a mix of some of the previous years, along with some exciting new ones! We hope you're inspired by them.

This event will be held from February 11th to 15th. Any content is welcome, as long as it is Sloane-focused and shows a positive depiction! Fanfic, fanart, meta, edits, moodboards, playlists, headcanons, interactive media - even simple appreciation posts and screenshots of fave scenes will be great!

Here's a list of the themes we have for SWAW 2024:

We got some lovely entries for Day 1! Tomorrow is Day 2, and our theme for the day will be Written in the Stars!!

In a lot of ways this is a segue from today's theme about women in STEM, as Sloane's clear love for stars is very much rooted in science!! Astronomy and astrophysics are subjects she seems to take great interest in, and stargazing is one of the first few pastimes she and Hayden share together! She is in fact so knowledgeable in this field that she's actually qualified enough to be part of NASA if she chose!

But her interest in stars also lies in the stories people tell of them, and how different cultures look at the same constellations and see different things. She is also a storyteller (and while some of us are not the happiest that they had her be the author of AtV!) and her interest in the mythology made behind astronomical objects is so fascinating too!!

Tomorrow, we celebrate both the astronomy whiz and the storyteller in Sloane!

As always, any form of appreciation is welcome! Fanfic, fanart, meta, edits, moodboards, playlists, headcanons, interactive media, even screenshots of favourite scenes or simple posts about your love for her!! Our only requirement is that you center Sloane in your work, and that the depiction is positive!

We also accept WIPs - we know irl can be hard and you may not always get the time to finish off stuff, so do show us a WIP of what you're working on if you're comfortable! Hope you're all having a wonderful Sloane Washington Week! Yesterday was International Day of Women and Girls in STEM, and what better way to celebrate it than to celebrate our Science Queen Sloane!!

We're now moving on to Day 3. Today's prompt is about Sloane and the friendships she has formed over the course of the series. It takes time to get to know Sloane as a person in the series, both due to the nature of her work and her social anxiety, but over the course of both books she develops close bonds with the friend group. She's adorable, enthusiastic and fiercely protective of her friends, and leaves no stone unturned to make sure they're safe. Hayden, the MC, Damien, Nadia, Khaan, Dames...the relationships we can explore are endless!

Any content is welcome, and if you're not able to get the content out on the same day, you can always post another day and tag the day you meant it for!

We've already had a lovely start to SWAW, with beautiful art and headcanons!

But today is quite a special day in our Sloane Appreciation Week. Not only is it Day 2, it's also International Day of Women and Girls in STEM!

Not only is this day meant for celebrating female participation in science and technological fields, but also calls for full and equal access to scientific research and innovation. As a character, Sloane is fantastic representation, and exploring her fascination with tech, astronomy and the sciences in general, opens up so much about her character.

So it would be immensely exciting to see content (fics, art, appreciation posts, hcs, anything!) on this part of Sloane's life!

As has been mentioned before, the prompt is just meant to be an inspiration for the day's content, and it isn't a must to deliver content only on that day. You can always post it later, just by tagging it with the appropriate day.
