i don't think enough fic writers get the appeal of sam/al being a stupid long slow burn where no one wins. LIKE WELL there is. but there's a lot of fics where it has it where they were in a relationship beforehand which im like. idk this is less angsty to me then them having to figure out their feelings in this very out of the ordinary situation and not being able to tell the other because if they get rejected they lose the most important person to them or at the very least make it very awkward. and like too many people brush off Al's homophobia WHICH I FEEL LIKE IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR HIM TO OVERCOME.

i need to watch this man work through his homophobia, then his internalized homophobia, and then maybe realize in the back of his mind he's bisexual, the realize in the front of his mind he's bisexual, then realize he might find his best friend hot, then realize he might be in LOVE with his best friend. and for all that work for him not make the step to tell Sam any of this over not wanting to fuck up everything (and his habit of pining after the one that got away). and him also mourning the fact that he never realized this sooner and also kicking himself for falling for his best friend in the first place.

and on sam's side he never gets a chance to sit down for a moment to really ponder what Al is to him. When he does he brushes it off as like Al being his representation of home and being his best friend. He does start worrying about how dependent he is on him (my source, my quantum leap book that is canon to me). he doesn't admit feelings when he does click in his head that he has them (which was an easier time than what Al had, but still took a while) because Al is only link to home and as I've said before, very important to him. And he has settled in his mind that Al would be uncomfortable at best with his feelings for him, hate him at worst. He couldn't bear with either.

i think what makes it more tragic is that NEITHER of them know if they would return the feelings, they both realized too late so they don't have any fond memories of THAT sort of relationship (they would still have fond memories [sam less so because swiss cheese] but like, idk never got to explore that variation of their relationship) happening before leaping, and like idk. the pining feels stronger to me.,,.,,,.,....,,.
