I think that relying too much in LLMs can indeed harm your capacity for learning, in the same way that poor systems of learning (rote memorization, just copying whatever without thinking) can. Learning is a thing you need... to learn. Even LLMs can be a useful tool for learning as long as you have a good learning strategy.
That paper that says that AIs cause COGNITIVE ATROPHY is still unreviewd and smells so much of bullshit that I'm tearing up from here. Do not share it uncritically.
#in general most papers that talk about health or psychology should be read very very critically#as there are authors who are willing to post the most catchy stuff from the poorest samples#cosas mias

Decorative Sunday
We've made several posts about paste papers, but never one that explains the complete process and technique. This small accordion book (4"x4"; 10x10 cm), Making Paste Papers by noted American paper artist Diane Maurer (b, 1944), made at her home studio in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania with original paste-paper samples in 1992 signed by the artist, does just that. It offers simple, step-by-step instructions on how to make paste papers from mixing the paste to finishing the paper.
Maurer is noted for a variety of paper arts, but she writes, "Although I am known for my books and decorative papers, my focus for many years has been on creating paper collage. I begin my collages by marbling, paste painting, and dyeing paper to create the colors and textures that are essential to my artwork. Then I tear, cut and combine multiple layers of patterned papers with handmade papers to represent surrealistic landscapes and fanciful seascapes. Most have considerable dimension, approaching paper sculpture."
Recently, Maurer was invited to become part of the MET's Paper Legacy Project for which she handcrafted 40 papers, including traditional marbling, Japanese Suminagashi marbling, and paste papers.
Our copy of this book is another donation from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick.

daydreaming about the academic papers I want to write to procrastinate on the academic papers I'm supposed to be writing
#I would LOVE a lit review of all the different papers and surveys that have attempted to assess the percent of the population that's asexual#and their sampling strategies and assumptions and what can be gleaned from them all taken together#I also want to write a book called A Queer History of Marriage#that assesses marriage in like. Mesopotamia. Ancient Egypt. Ancient Greece. Han China. Medieval Europe. Classic Maya.#through the colonial Spanish/British in America and into the present day#how different cultures conceived of what 'marriage' meant and who did it and who was allowed to do it and why#and what people who didn't get married did instead#like surprise this is a very aro perspective of the history of marriage and why it is what it is today

TUMBLR PHANNIES
hey everyone!! ive created a survey to compare/contrast phandom experiences by platform....and i really want to hear from you!
its abt a 5-15 min time commitment depending on your answers, but your feedback is invaluable and it's completely anonymous!! (i hope it doesn't need saying but this survey is run without platform bias and the last thing i want to do is pit people against each other! i just need a bigger sample size!)
thank you <3
#if i get a large enough sample size ill write a paper with the findings#bc its always been so interesting to me#but i cant make sweeping generalizations without having data to back it up yk#so if u filled it out ill give u a live turkey and my hand in marriage#please#dan and phil#dan and phil games#phandom#dnp#amazingphil#danisnotonfire#daniel howell#phandom survey#hate begging for retweets but if i get 2 responses from tumblr and 20 from twitter it would be so skewed#so i rly want to make sure i get a relatively even spread#thank you thank you thank you

everyone is arguing about the ethics of de-extinction and whether or not Colossal Biosciences’ GMO puppies count as ~real~ dire wolves, and tbh I don’t give a shit about either of those things, I’m stuck on this quote from the USA Today article: “From those two specimens, Shapiro and the team at Colossal recovered enough DNA to create two dire wolf genomes to compare with other canid species including coyotes, jackals, dholes and, of course, other wolves.” I just straight up don’t believe you. You did not get two complete dire wolf genomes from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 70,000-year-old skull. i thought this might be a reporter getting the difference between a genome and a genetic sequence wrong, but no, Colossal themselves are saying they got whole genome sequences from both samples. this company has been in existence for 4 years and they claim to have developed a novel sequencing technique that provides 500-fold improvement on the extraction of ancient DNA over previous methods? the company who, when confronted about the lack of evidence for their “complete” thylacine genome back in October, said their “sole focus is de-extinction, not writing scientific papers”? these guys got TWO whole genome sequences of the dire wolf?? pull the fucking other one, it has bells on
#laurelnose.txt#a lot of EXTREMELY credulous reporting going on here!!#two complete genomes. TWO#they’re either oversimplifying what they got to the point of misinformation or they’re fucking lying#i’m fairly sure the two samples Colossal used were in the set analyzed by Perri et al 2021 for their dire wolf phylogenetics#and Perri et al. noted significant molecular damage typical of ancient DNA on all of their samples#funnily enough Beth Shapiro was an author on that paper! isn't that interesting!

Back in the first few days of 2019, i happened to draw a thing based on the song Rabid Child, just for fun. But what i drew didn't match the picture i had in my head, so i kept trying at it. It became a thing i did not-quite-every year, trying to get it right, and something i did to gauge how my skills had improved over the previous year (or two).
The 2023 one is pretty close to the original idea i had. Since i didn't figure it'd be very interesting to essentially just do the same thing again, i decided to make it in paper this time around; i really love how it turned out! This is probably the last year i'll iterate on this specific idea; starting next year, i'll have to find something new to replace it.
#i'll take proper pictures of it eventually but setting up good lighting sounds like a pain#if you're wondering why i used such godawful colors on the old ones#i thought it would be fun to sample the colors directly from the few available stills of the unreleased music video#it took me entirely too long to accept that that was Not A Good Idea#paper#they might be giants#tmbg#rabid child#redraw

Scissors from Paper Mario Origami King. Any member of the Legion of Stationery would work but I have a soft spot for that green fuck

“All right! Enough. It was fun while it lasted...but your feeble attacks have grown tiresome. Let's CUT to the climax! Ha haaa!”
“Let's get this straight: I WILL annihilate you...but I don't see why we can't have some fun first. After all, where's the challenge in slicing you to strips immediately? Therefore, I shall grant you... a slight advantage.”
Top lieutenant amongst the Legion of Stationery who guards the green streamer
Slices Bowser Jr. and cuts up the koopa troop into pieces to stick onto the paper macho buzzy beetle
Their personality is more deranged in the Japanese version
Reminder, the premise is “would a normie think it’s weird to find them attractive?” (Would they have to “hear me out?”)

Decorative Sunday
The patterned papers shown here were designed and created with software developed by Warren Stringer and Beth Regardz, laser printed on handmade colored Japanese Moriki paper using multiple layers of metallic foils, and published in a miniature (75 x 75 mm) Coptic-bound book entitled Patterns from Chaos, produced in Santa Cruz, California by Peter & Donna Thomas in 1991 in an edition of 50 copies signed by all four.
The concept of chaos theory and cellular automata was developed in Santa Cruz at University of California Santa Cruz by Ralph Abraham and colleagues. Warren Stringer wrote original code in Santa Cruz based on these concepts. Beth Regardz co-founded the Cabrillo College Digital Media program where Peter Thomas took his first computer classes from her.
Peter and Donna collaborated with Regardz and Stringer on the concept and design for this book. To create the images each sheet of Moriki paper was passed through the printer two times for each color (once to apply the toner and once to fuse the metallic foil to the paper). Thus an image with three colors passed thru the printer six times. Our copy of Patterns form Chaos is a gift from Peter & Donna Thomas.

so in MY game of Veilguard, when you play rock paper scissors with Manfred, he ONLY throws paper while my Rook will throw all 3. which i thought was very funny like… son, someday i will teach you the other two.
but APPARENTLY it’s different in other peoples games with manfred able to throw more or rook being the limited one so let’s see what the spread is here poll time

#‘are you sure he only does paper’ i mean no probability says i could just be having insane luck#but my sample size is over 50 games with him#across varrying days and with quests between bc i run up to play him every time i come back to lighthouse#and let him play until he wins bc i want my son to thrive#dragon age#dragon age: veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard#manfred#dragon age manfred#polls#ramblings#jade plays dav
