Understanding Emptiness in Fullness
"How to view all phenomena and how to view others."
In Buddhism, we say that everything is emptiness, but that emptiness is not the same as nothingness. When everything is empty, why isn't it nothing? Empty means that it's not truly existent, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. When we say that something is not truly existent, it just means that it is dependent upon something else to exist as it is. We think that everything, including ourselves, truly exists, but actually, nothing exists independently.
When you look up into the sky, sometimes you see a rainbow, but you do not always see it. The rainbow only appears based upon whether or not the conditions that allow the rainbow to appear are present. Those conditions are the proper light, humidity, water droplets, and the angle of the sun all being there in a certain way to form the rainbow. We think that seeing a rainbow is an auspicious event, but as a dharma practitioner, the real meaning of auspicious is the ability to see beyond that. It's when we can see that everything exists by its own conditional phenomena, by relying upon something else that allows it to become as it is, for as long as it can be.
What you can see is considered external phenomena, but what about the phenomena of self and others? When you look at others, what do you see? How do you perceive them? We usually cannot perceive anything. We can only understand things through learning. The eye is doing the seeing, but something else is telling the mind what you are seeing. Your eyes, your ears, your mind, and your experiences are all working together to give you this information. The mind on its own, working independently, cannot see, hear or smell, so cognition does not happen with only using one's sense of seeing something. Our experiences and knowledge also come into play. Seeing is not always believing, and hearing is not always the truth. Those are all perceptions of yourself or of others. There is nothing that is truly trustworthy in samsara.
The main thing we should do as practitioners is to observe the nature of the mind. You can check your mind, but how can you trust your mind? Your own mind is based upon your own perceptions and beliefs. Can we drop the hearing, drop seeing, drop smelling, tasting, and feeling and simply be a vast space?
The Buddha-nature mind is clear, and it is omnipresent, but we choose to focus on the small stuff. We should perceive externally with people and with phenomena and internally with ourselves / our own mind, every moment as it is.  Be there and live to enjoy every moment as it is.

Small Story 289.
Small Story 289 "One-Month Visit, Three-Year Bond"
Ram landed in Dubai and was warmly welcomed by his old friend Nath. Originally planning to spend just one month in the "City of Opportunity" to meet his longtime friends and revisit his old home in Sharjah—where he had spent over 18 years—Ram had no idea that destiny had other plans.
Nath, who now lived in a spacious villa in Sharjah with his wife Malini and school-going son Sandeep, invited Ram to stay with them during his visit. As Ram crossed the familiar streets of Sharjah, memories of his professional days as a pharma executive came rushing back—those days of interacting with top-tier doctors of various nationalities, filled with purpose and passion.
At Nath's home, he was introduced to Malini, and after a hearty lunch, Ram took a short rest. Later that evening, Sandeep returned from school and happily greeted him. Ram gifted the boy a sweet box and a cricket bat, knowing about his interest in the sport—an act that brought joy to the child.
That evening, Nath took Ram to meet their old friends—Raghu, Kishore, and Mohan. They were all thrilled to see Ram after five years. At 63, Ram still carried his charm and was known among his peers for his punctuality, humility, and deep respect for his profession.
During their reunion, another guest joined the group—Sanjay, a friend of Kishore and an employee of a multinational pharmaceutical company. After being introduced to Ram, Sanjay said, “I’ve heard a lot about you. In fact, I’ve been looking for you.”
Ram, intrigued, asked, “What for?”
Sanjay replied, “Our company is looking for a Regional Coordinator with a strong pharma background. Based on my industry contacts, you're the perfect fit.”
Ram hesitated, “But I’m 63.”
Sanjay smiled. “You may be 63, but you look 55. Age doesn't matter to us as long as the person is capable—and you clearly are. It’s a three-year contract, and after that, it’s entirely your choice whether to continue or return home.”
Nath was thrilled at the opportunity presented to his friend. “Ram, this is perfect for you. You’re smart, experienced, and this city knows your value.”
Ram thought about his family—his wife Vasanthy and daughter Nandhini. Both of them loved Dubai. Even though Nandhini had settled in the US, she often expressed her desire to visit Dubai frequently.
Having completed his one-month visit, Ram returned to India with more than just memories. He shared the news with Vasanthy, who was overjoyed at the unexpected offer. What started as a short visit turned into a new chapter in his professional journey.
Sharjah and Dubai had once again opened their arms to him. His one-month stay had turned into a 36-month commitment—a testament to how strong relationships and reputations can bring unexpected rewards. K.Ragavan 27-6-25

Reflections on Enlightenment and the Way
"Many of the past masters have tried to explain enlightenment. But, like climbing to a summit, it is an individual experience. Why try to explain the inexplicable phenomena of enlightenment?"
Let's say a person wants to climb to the top of a mountain to experience what it will be like up there. The way up is challenging, but he is determined and gets started. The mountain is high, and so the uphill climb takes a very long time. He encounters many people on their way down, and he asks each of them to tell him about their experiences. He wants to know what they saw and what methods they used to reach the top successfully. Everybody answers his questions, but they give him a different account. He continues, but after talking with that many people, he concludes that he knows what is up there. Perhaps he doesn't need to go up anymore. So he gives up and does not continue his journey.
In much the same way, in seeking enlightenment, there are no set answers to your questions. Enlightenment is a journey where you will come to understand the meaning of your own life, which is not going to be the same for everybody. It is essential to recognize that not giving up is a part of the practice toward enlightenment. There will undoubtedly be obstacles that will stop us in our tracks toward our awakening. And that is why no one can tell you that there is only one answer to this question.
We practice dharma so that we can create a perfect habit. The daily prayers and recitations may sometimes be boring for us, but it was the same for all of the masters who have accomplished it. Through their efforts, they have given us the perfect recipe. Once you become a master, it doesn't mean that you will understand all of the ingredients, but you will know how to use them. To bring out the best of anything, one needs to understand it's nature, which takes experience. There are different methods of study, and there are other experiential methods.
People change, and even we change continuously throughout our lives. We each have different natures, and we have to accept that. We have to experience our quirks, our impatience, and our judgments, so we know what we need to tune-up. We need to be like a sieve to sieve ourselves to see what's inside and clear it out. That is why meditation, self-acknowledgment, and self-love are so important. With this, we can look to find the kind of love that has no hidden agendas, the type of pure love that comes from the Buddhas.
In conclusion, you must keep going with your practices, on this journey, without seeking to be influenced by the experiences others have had. Your destination might be the same, but the changes effected in reaching there will be unique to you.
