Feeling a bit fed up and I know this will probably sound privileged and ridiculous. But we booked a holiday to Santorini for September next year. We have close friends we sometimes go on holiday with but they’re both teachers and have to go in school holidays, whereas we are now released from school holidays. In fact with fostering, it’s easier for us to go in term time as getting holiday care for the children is easier and less disruptive for them.
Anyway, I told my close friend that we wouldn’t go on holiday to Tunisia with them in October next year and instead we had booked a week in Santorini in September.
She messages back an hour later and says oh they’ve always fancied Santorini and now she’s changed their May holiday (they were going to Turkey) to go there instead, to the same village we booked.
I feel like she’s stolen my holiday! Just feel pissed off and need to rant somewhere.
(This “copying” has happened so frequently in our 20yr friendship, that it’s become a bit of a joke between our children and her children who all find it somewhat irritating. I find it very annoying and sometimes just don’t tell her things so that she can’t steal my ideas. But in all other ways she’s a great friend so I try and move past it. But right now, fed up.)
Might change my holiday to the Seychelles just to one up her. (Sorry sorry truly ridiculous I know)

There is also a border with Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. And, lest anyone forget, there is a maze of underground tunnels one recently-freed Israeli hostage calls "Lower Gaza" which presents numerous illegal exit opportunities.
As Ari Zivotofsky observes in the Jerusalem Post, a September 19, 2023, episode of the Palestinian television show Emigration claimed that, "in the past 15 years a quarter of a million young Palestinians left for abroad." In 2022, over 15,000 of them who lived abroad (having apparently escaped the "prison") willingly returned to it to celebrate the feast of Eid al-Adha.
This is not how prisons work.
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has been running a series on "Gaza Before October 7" refuting the "concentration camp" and "open-air prison" claims with pictures and videos. The first two episodes follow Palestinian "influencer" Yousef Alhelou as he travels around Gaza, showing off the top spots for tourists, including a gold market. Subsequent episodes include an Al-Jazeera feature of the economic boom in Gaza, Turkish television reports on the markets of Gaza, and various Arab media outlets covering the many sporting events in Gaza.
Hamas propagandists argue that Gazans are denied goods and services they are entitled to because of Israel's "land, water, and sea blockade," but Israel only blocks weapons from entering Gaza. Even after October 7, Israel has continued to supply electricity, food, and medicine.
What the "pro-Palestine" luminaries will never admit is that Israel has been forced into controlling Gaza's ports by the long history of weapons shipped there. In 2001, two vessels, the Calypso and the Santorini, were seized with weapons destined for Palestinian terrorists, and in 2002, a Palestinian ship called the Karine A was seized with 50 tons of Iranian weapons destined for Gaza. Since then, Israel has acted to prevent further shipments of weapons from reaching Gaza by sea. In 2007, after Hamas took over Gaza completely, Israel imposed an inspections regime and began more aggressively searching ships for smuggled weapons. Food and medicine are not prevented from entering Gaza.
Poor access to healthcare is another complaint about life in the Gaza "open-air prison." In April 2023, the Jerusalem-based anti-Israel activist group B'Tselem faulted Israel for preventing Palestinians from leaving Gaza in order to be treated in Israeli hospitals. But Israel treats plenty of Palestinians. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh sends his entire family to Israel for medical care. In 2013 his 1-year-old granddaughter was treated in an Israeli hospital; in 2014 his daughter was treated at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital and his mother-in-law was treated at Jerusalem's Augusta Victoria Hospital; in 2021 his niece was treated at Ichilov Hospital. Just this month, it was reported that Haniyeh's grandniece was being treated at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva. But why should any Gazans be treated in Israeli hospitals? There are 36 hospitals in Gaza, many of which are run by foreign nations (Indonesia, Turkey, Jordan, European countries) serving a population of around 2 million.
Of course, hospitals in Gaza are dual-purpose buildings, offering both healthcare and camouflage for the entrances to Hamas's elaborate subterranean infrastructure. An IDF spokesman said that "Hamas systematically built the Indonesian Hospital to disguise its underground terror infrastructure." The Al-Shifa hospital, where IDF soldiers found a stash of rifles, ammunition, and ballistic vests, also sits atop a major tunnel junction. IDF soldiers recently found unopened boxes of medicine for Israeli hostages at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
If Gaza is a prison, Hamas is the jailer.

Above is another sketch from my 1972 trip to Greece. It's a view of the town and part of the harbor of Mykonos. I'm glad I saw it that summer since 50 years later it's a much more crowded, noisier and pricier place. It's one of the Greek islands which most suffers from over-tourism.
The solution? Skip Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini ect.- and go in October, not June to September.

Extreme-G
NA release: 27th October 1997
PAL release: 9th December 1997
JP release: 29th May 1998
Developer: Probe
Publisher: Acclaim
N64 Magazine Score: 87%
This is one I played a lot when I was younger. An extremely fast futuristic racing game on tron-like sci-fi motorbikes. It’s a proper competition-based racing game (where all the racers start at the same place, not an overtaking arcade racer) and has a bunch of weapons thrown into the mix.
The biggest criticism about Extreme-G is probably the handling, which does not manage to keep up with the speed of the bikes. To counter this, the developers added a bunch of things to ease the frustration. Walls don’t slow you down that much (they do slightly damage your shields) and the sides of the track have a kind of “energy barrier” that keeps you on the track. Respawning after falling off is also very quick. Even using the cheat to make the game even faster, making mistakes in races never feels annoying.
There are weapons dotted across the track that you can pick up, which come in lots of slight variations. These have a smaller immediate impact on racers than the likes of Mario Kart, but do whittle away shields (you also have a laser you have access to at any time to do extra damage to shields). However, the weapons are difficult to use effectively and ones like the cannons are more likely to harm you than your opponents.
Extreme-G has a good amount of tracks (compared to other racers at the time on N64, at least), although they do tend to blur a bit together due to the winding nature of them. There’s a track set around some lava games that’s the most difficult track in the game (by a massive margin), and the final track is a futuristic forest with Santorini-inspired buildings and UFOs flying around and looks absolutely gorgeous.
On top of the standard league mode, there’s time trial, practice and a shoot-’em-up mode where you have to blast drones. The multiplayer also has a battle mode in unique arenas, so there’s a good amount of stuff to do in the game.
Extreme-G is still a lot of fun, and manages to feel different to both Wipeout and F-Zero.
And, if nothing else, Extreme G is wonderful to look at. It marries Blade Runner and Alton Towers to awesome effect and, speed-wise, beats Wipeout at its own game.
- Tim Weaver, N64 Magazine #9
Remake or remaster?
An Extreme-G collection would be wonderful to see. Just do some minor improvements like properly implemented widescreen and customisable controls, perhaps even add weapon icons to the HUD. Unfortunately, IP owners Throwback Entertainment seem uninterested in the franchise, only re-releasing the poor PC port of the second game, lacking analogue steering or proper controller support.
Official ways to get the game.
There is no official way to get Extreme-G

How to Plan a Budget Europe Tour
Europe is a dream destination for many travelers. From the romantic streets of Paris to the historic charm of Rome and the scenic beauty of the Swiss Alps, the continent offers endless experiences. But planning a budget Europe tour may seem challenging, especially with the perception that it’s expensive. The good news is that with smart planning and the right choices, you can enjoy Europe without overspending.
1. Choose Budget-Friendly Destinations
Not every European city is equally expensive. Western Europe tends to be costlier, while Eastern and Central Europe offer similar beauty and cultural richness at a fraction of the cost.
Top budget-friendly countries to consider:
Hungary (Budapest)
Czech Republic (Prague)
Poland (Krakow)
Portugal (Lisbon, Porto)
Greece (Athens, Santorini in shoulder season)
How this helps: These destinations provide excellent value for money in terms of food, accommodations, and attractions, making your budget Europe tour more affordable.
2. Travel During the Shoulder Season
One of the smartest ways to plan a budget Europe tour is to avoid the peak tourist season (June to August). Instead, travel during the shoulder months—April to early June and September to October.
Benefits include:
Lower airfares
Cheaper hotel rates
Smaller crowds at major attractions
3. Book Flights and Accommodations in Advance
Flight tickets and accommodations are the biggest expenses of a budget Europe trip. Book well in advance and use price comparison platforms to find the best deals.
Tips:
Be flexible with dates and airports
Use budget airlines for inter-country travel
Choose hostels, B&Bs, or shared apartments for affordable lodging
4. Use Public Transportation and City Passes
Transportation costs can add up quickly. Thankfully, Europe has an excellent public transport system.
Suggestions:
Use metros, trams, or buses instead of taxis
Consider Eurail Pass for multi-country trips
Buy city passes to save on transport and entry fees
5. Eat Like a Local
Dining in touristy areas can eat into your budget. To make your budget Europe tour cost-effective, look for local food options.
Ideas:
Explore local markets and food trucks
Visit bakeries or try daily specials at cafés
Cook your own meals if your accommodation has a kitchen
6. Focus on Free and Low-Cost Activities
Europe offers plenty of experiences that don’t cost a fortune. Many attractions, especially cultural or historical sites, have free entry days or minimal charges.
Don't miss:
Free walking tours
Museums with free hours
Local festivals and open-air events
Scenic parks, riversides, and historic streets
Final Thoughts
Planning a budget Europe tour doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or experience. With a bit of research and flexibility, you can explore Europe’s top destinations affordably. Focus on smart travel choices—affordable stays, local food, public transport, and free attractions. Whether it’s your first trip or a backpacking adventure, a budget-friendly European journey is absolutely possible.
So pack light, plan smart, and get ready to enjoy Europe without breaking the bank!
