Ibn Abī Mulaykah (raḥimahullāh) said: I heard ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr (radiy Allāhu ʿanhumā) say upon opening his fast,
O Allah, I beg You – through Your mercy which encompasses everything – to forgive me.

Five Pillars of Islam
Tumblr media
As-Salam-u-Alaikum wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh ("Peace be unto you and so may the mercy of Allah and his Blessings")!
Introduction
The core beliefs of Islam can be encapsulated within the Five Pillars of Islam, which provide a fundamental framework for the life of a Muslim. These pillars emphasize that belief is not enough without practice. This blog post aims to give a brief overview of these Five Pillars, namely Shahada (Faith), Salah (Prayer), Zakat (Charity), Sawm (Fasting), and Hajj (Pilgrimage).
Shahada (Faith)
Shahada, or the declaration of faith, is the first pillar of Islam. It is a simple but profound statement: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." This declaration affirms the oneness of God and acknowledges Muhammad as his prophet. The Shahada is a fundamental aspect of a Muslim's identity and signifies their acceptance of Islam's core beliefs. This statement is repeated every day by Muslims as part of Salah.
In order to convert to Islam, an individual only has to declare this statement in Arabic. This is very different from other religions, like Catholicism, which requires an individual to take classes, or from Judaism, which requires a convert to be rejected. One simply has to declare the Shahada with the intent to convert and accept Islam. Islam is easy to convert to, but that doesn’t mean conversion is easy.
Salah (Prayer)
Salah is the namesake of this blog! It is also the second pillar of Islam. Salah refers to the five daily prayers that Muslims are obligated to perform. These prayers take place at dawn (Fajr), noon (Dhuhr), afternoon (Asr), sunset (Maghrib), and night (Isha’a). Each prayer consists of specific units (Rakas) and includes recitation from the Quran. Performing Salat allows Muslims to maintain a spiritual connection with Allah throughout the day and serves as a constant reminder of their faith.
The steps of salah may seem complicated for new reverts. The words can also be a source of confusion. I made (hopefully) helpful guides here to help!
Sawm (Fasting)
Sawm, the third pillar of Islam, refers to the obligatory fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. From dawn until sunset, Muslims who are physically able to must abstain from eating, drinking, and other physical needs. Yes, this includes drinking water! It is a time of purification, spiritual growth, and fostering a heightened sense of empathy and compassion towards the less fortunate. Sawm serves as a reminder of the suffering of others and the importance of self-control and resilience. It also serves as a reminder of Allah's love and mercy, because it was the month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, Praise be Upon Him. At sunset, a meal called Iftar is shared to break the day-long fast. A common food to break fast with is dates.
Zakat (Charity)
Zakat, the fourth pillar, is a system of mandatory charity that requires Muslims to give a fixed portion of their income to those in need. The Zakat is 2.5% of the value of a Muslims wealth. Muslims must meet a certain threshold to qualify for giving Zakat. If someone has less than the Nisib (which equals roughly 87.5 grams of gold), then they are not required to give Zakat. This act of giving is not only an expression of generosity but also a means of purifying one's wealth. The money is put towards community benefits like feeding the hungry, providing for the orphaned, funding a school, the possibilities are endless. Zakat fosters a sense of community and ensures the welfare of the less fortunate.
Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Lastly, the fifth pillar of Islam is Hajj, the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime, provided they are physically and financially able. Muslims embark on this days-long journey, most often in the month of Hajj, with almost 2 million other Muslims. This spiritual journey fosters a sense of unity and equality among Muslims, as all pilgrims wear the same attire and perform the same rituals, regardless of their social or economic status.
Conclusion
The Five Pillars of Islam provide a comprehensive guide for Muslims on how to lead a fulfilling and righteous life. Each pillar, whether it be the declaration of faith, daily prayer, or mandatory charity, intertwines faith with action and serves as a constant reminder of the responsibilities and duties that come with being a Muslim. By understanding these pillars, one can gain a deeper insight into the principles that underpin the Islamic faith.

What is Islam Really about? Misperceptions of Religion
Tumblr media
Islam is a religion of peace and goodness.
In a world filled with headlines and hashtags, it can be easy to form impressions of a religion like Islam without ever truly understanding it. At its core, Islam is a faith centered on peace, purpose, and a deep connection with the Divine.
A Muslim is someone who chooses to follow Islam. It is a monotheistic faith. Muslims believe in one, all-powerful, compassionate God who created the universe and actively guides humanity.
The Core Message The core of Islam is simple: believe in God, do good, and live a life of balance, compassion, and responsibility. The Quran, Islam’s holy book, is seen as God's final message to humanity, reaffirming the teachings of earlier prophets like Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all).
Tumblr media
Muslim life is built around five key practices known as the Five Pillars:
Shahada. Declaring belief in one God and Muhammad as His final prophet.
Salat. Praying five times a day to stay spiritually connected and grounded.
Zakat. Giving to those in need, fostering social justice and compassion.
Sawm. Fasting during the month of Ramadan to develop self-control and empathy.
Hajj. A once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca, symbolizing unity and humility.
A Way of Life Islam is not just a set of rituals, it is a way of life. It encourages kindness to neighbors, honesty in business, care for the environment, and mercy even in moments of anger. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that the best among people are those who are most beneficial to others.
Misconceptions and Reality Like many world religions, Islam has been misunderstood and misrepresented — often by those who commit violence in its name or those who judge it without context. The reality is that over a billion Muslims around the world live quiet lives of devotion, family, work, and community service.
People who commit crimes are not Muslims, they follow religious fanaticism.
Islam is about remembering the Creator, living with intention, and striving to be better each day — for oneself, for others, and for the sake of something greater than us all.
Do not fall for the propaganda. Haters do not even differentiate between religion and ethnicity.
I call on everyone to join Islam.

In shā Allāh, for this month of Jumādā al-Awwal 1445 AH, Ayyam al-Beed [white days] will fall on:
13th Jumādā al-Awwal 1445 – Monday 27th November 2023
14th Jumādā al-Awwal 1445 – Tuesday 28th November 2023
15th Jumādā al-Awwal 1445 – Wednesday 29th November 2023
“Beed” is the plural of “Abyad” which means white. Three days of 13, 14 and 15 of lunar month are called “Al-Ayyam-ul-Beed” for the reason that their nights are bright because of the moonlight. The moon begins to diminish gradually after these days.
Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayyam al-beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.”
Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said to me: “If you fast any part of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.”
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه said: “My close friend [i.e., the Prophet ﷺ] advised me to do three things which I will never give up until I die: fasting three days each month, praying Duha, and sleeping after praying Witr.”
What A Salaf Said Regarding Fasting, SubḥānAllāh!!
Sufyān b. ‘Uyaynah Raḥimahullāh said: “When on the Day of Resurrection a slave is being taken into account and from amongst all of his actions are sins, and all that remains is that person’s fast, Allāh will take from him all of the sins and enter him into Jannah with his fast.”
The Wisdom Behind Fasting | Sh. Ibn al-'Uthaymeen Raḥimahullāh
Sh. Ibn al-‘Uthaymeen Raḥimahullāh said: “From the wisdom of fasting is that it is a form of training for controlling the soul and the power to stop yourself for indeed man is inclined towards evil except for the one to whom mercy is shown by Allāh, it also overwhelms a person and makes them humble, it gives them humility towards the Creator and kindness towards the creation.
From the wisdom of fasting is that the blood becomes less flowing, it becomes more thick and more constricted when a person is hungry and thirsty, this causes the flowing of Shayṭān to be less as well for indeed Shayṭān flows through the bloodstream of the son of Ādam as has been authentically narrated from the Prophet ﷺ in Bukhārī and Muslim so fasting decreases the whispers of Shayṭān and it decreases the episodes of lust and anger hence the reason fasting is called a 'shield’ against desires."
Prophet ﷺ said: "There is a gate in Jannāh called ar-Rayyān and only those who observed fast shall enter through."
Al Bassaam رحمه الله said: "Fasting increases mercy and people AWARE of the pain suffered by those less fortunate."
Prophet ﷺ said: "Every servant of Allah who observes fast for a day in the way of Allah, Allah would remove, because of this day, his face farther from the Fire (of Hell) to the extent of seventy years' distance.
Virtue Of Fasting
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts a day in the Path of Allāh, Allāh will create between him and the Hellfire a trench like (the distance of) what is between the sky and the earth.”
Reward Of Fasting
Sh. Ibn al-‘Uthaymīn رحمه الله: “And from the virtues of the fasting is that its reward is NOT limited to a specific amount rather the fasting person is given his reward without an account (i.e unlimited reward).”
Do try to fast the 3 white days, InshaAllāh!

Rooted in earlier Abrahamic traditions, these obligations were systematized as Islam expanded, ensuring religious unity across diverse...

Hey doc, it's Rafael again
I'm fasting in solidarity to a Muslim friend
My girlfriend is saying it's unhealthy beacuse of how much I work I do and to do it with no water or food is bad buy whatever your not a real doctor your a mind doctor
So anyways now a days I kinda just time skip? Dissociative through stuff like I'm living half in my mind half irl
Duel screening through life, so is that okay? Will this affect my ability to study
Sometimes I think you know the answers to these questions before you ask them.
As you might know, there are exceptions to fasting requirements in Islam if you have a chronic illness that would make it dangerous to do so. Now, I'm not a theologian or a Muslim, but I am a doctor. A real doctor. And it sounds very much like it's dangerous for you.
When health issues are invisible to others, we can often feel guilty about claiming them as legitimate. But hopefully you can see in this particular case how mental health is physical health. It's all tied together.
I'll write Allah a doctor's note for you. I think He'll accept it.
(You could also observe a modified fast, which is of course not in keeping with Sawm, but it might be a worthwhile exercise for your own sake. And, again, you have the note, and I think you said you're not even Muslim, so anything you do is above and beyond anyway.)
