Every time I see a Star Wars video, animation, art or otherwise, I can’t help but think back on the time I blew somebodies mind about how an actual lightsaber would just be the same baton style we see in the toy versions. You push a button and out comes the baton.
To clarify, this was on a video I haven’t seen in years (I can’t find it no matter how much I search Youtube and Google anymore). An old scientist dude was at a Star Wars con or something and had a panel about how the best way to make a real lightsaber was to use a reflector on the other end of it… but you could just like… but that struck me as impractical. There wouldn’t be any mass to contain it for striking solid structures or to repost and parry other light saber users. You’d just be waving around flashlights. Very very expensive and powerful flashlights, but flashlights nonetheless.
But my argument in the comments of that video was that we already have the ideal starting point in a design, the toy baton style we have already. You push a button, the baton extends from its casing, it gets super heated but not to the point it melts the baton, casing or circuits (though since Lightsabers are powered by gems I’m not to sure how that works), and then you slice and dice like you’re trying to make a stirfry.
That’s basically it. There are four issues with making an actual battle ready lightsaber though.
First: finding a metal with such scarcity that it couldn’t be found just lying around for others to use in shields or bulwarks against it.
Second: the metal would also need such a high melting point that the plasma (yeah I’m using plasma, we have Milky Way candy bars and the Milky Way constellation and they don’t have anything to do with one another besides the name) wouldn’t melt it even with the plasma being able to pierce and melt basically everything else.
Third: a powersource that can generate that sort of energy in a confined space. Now this could be solved by having say a power pack on your back like they apparently had in the early comics that would be attached to the saber by a cable. At least until we can make a powersource that can be confined in just the LS itself. But it still doesn’t stop the biggest worry…
Fourth and Final: Radiating Energy. A blade or Baton of any durability being heated enough to melt everything else in existence would still be generating so much heat that it would basically set not just you, but the freaking atmosphere ablaze. Sure this could be mitigated by adding a cooling system or by having the blade heat up over a long period of time instead of being done in less than two seconds, but that wouldn’t be cost efficient for the energy or awesome for the wielder.
Anyways, that’s my hot take. If anyone can help me find the video I’d really appreciate it. I hope everyone has an awesome rest of their day/evening/night.

I don't think about Harry Potter all that much these days but sometimes I just randomly remember that these kids were writing on parchment. Like I know they have an aesthetic but WHY are these children writing their essays on ANIMAL SKINS in this day and age. It just isn't practical. At least go with old-timey paper or something.

Stanford never became friends with Fiddleford.
Instead he got himself a different small friend group who cares a lot about him. At least about the Ford he pretended to be in college.
A kind, soft spoken formerly bullied genius who researches very dull stuff in Oregon and definitely not anything weird. Their Ford would never break any rules or ignore safety measures [unlike that other student they heard about during their college years.]
And then Ford stops answering their calls and loses his grant.
It’s time for an intervention and they start pestering Ford with letters and calls until he finally agrees to meet them at a science convention, but he’ll take his brother with him.
They’re relieved! Ford is with Shermie! They like Shermie! It's a good thing that Ford still has one brother who isn't a good for nothing selfish criminal who destroyed his entire future!
If they ever get their hands on Ford’s evil twin they’ll make sure he’ll regret ever messing with their friend. Ford is too nice for revenge. They aren’t.
Meanwhile at the not-yet Mystery Shack, the Stans freshly survived their own angsty canon divergent tale of two stans AU and locked Bill out of Ford's mind like a week ago.
Stan: I don’t know how long Ford will keep me around but this will be good for him. He needs some friends to take care of him after I inevitably get kicked out again!
Ford: I only agreed to this because Stan insisted and I still haven’t found a way to thank him and apologize. I hope all my “friends” die in a fire.
#gravity falls#stanley pines#stanford pines#I need Ford to be a bit off a bastard im this one. But can we blame him?#The poor guy did so much research about how to fit in with his peers before going to college and it worked too well.#He regretted it almost instantly once he realised he had to keep this up for the next couple of years.#He had to pretend to like all the popular music and movies and girls#and partying#instead of spending his weekends solving the greatest mysteries of the universe.#he constantly had to tell himself that this is what he wants. He needs to fit in and be liked if he ever wants to be recognized by his peer#Of course Fords friends have it instantly out for Stan and can you blame them? Ford looks like he hasn’t slept in weeks#hides mysterious injuries and his brother refuses to leave Fords side ven at night#[Poor Ford is just simply too scared to go to sleep without Stan protecting him]#They all come to horrifying conclusions about Stan. Poor Stan might even agree with them. Also#Ford: uses slang and bad grammar Stan: SHIT WHO DID FORD GET POSSESSED BY NOW???#Eventually an anamoly or a science experiment gone wrong happens during the convention and Ford is all over it immediately#pulls out a new journal#spouts out theories faster than anyone can keep up with and runs closer to the madness with no regard to his#or everyone elses safety Fords friends stare after him disbelieving and scared out of their minds Stan next to them sighs “Ford#amirite?#Welp better go and make sure he doesn’t get himself killed” and runs after Ford.#Eventtually in all the chaos Ford and Stan get rescued by a kind man in a giant mech dinosaur. Ford and the new guy hit it off immediately#and solve everything with just a little bit more destuction that might’ve been necessary. It was all for the sake of science.#Stan takes a long look at the robot guy. “Yep#he’ll do. Seems much more Ford’s style”#and throws him into the Stanleymobile together with Ford and escapes before the police arrive.#Ford and the new guy barely notice as they keep on talking nerd stuff. Easiest kidnapping of Stans life.#He knew coming here was a great idea. And thus the mystery trio was born.

i just got so mad about how much wally fans hate barry, how much writers hate him ( hense why he was killed int he first place and shelved), and how any movement he makes in comics its taken as A JAB to wally fans that i might put barry back on his solo blog.

I've been reading a lot of science fiction and fantasy stories lately, by a lot of different authors, and I've noticed an interesting trend. Not something that happens all the time by any means, but something that's more likely to happen in one over the other.
Magic fixes problems while science causes problems.
And it makes sense that it would be that way, because magic is something that we don't really have, and we can only imagine what we would do with it if we did. Magic is just altering reality in ways that logically shouldn't happen, given our current understanding of physics. If we could change reality with a snap of our fingers, oh man we would do so much good with it.
But science. We've seen what science can do. And before it can achieve the lofty goals that it sets out to do, it goes through any number of failures and setbacks. We've seen the mistakes. We've suffered through them. Then in fiction, we extrapolate what could happen with advancements that we haven't quite reached yet.
With science fiction, we tell cautionary tales of a that future could be. With fantasy, we tell fairy tales of a past that never was.
Not every time. But often enough to notice.

when I was 12 I was sick and missed a science test. when I was back at school the teacher told me I could make it up after class but it completely slipped my mind and I went home on the bus
the next day I went to the teacher to apologize and tell her I could stay after that day if it was still okay and before I could she was like “You saw the zero in the grade book” in such a matter of fact way
I, in fact, had not looked at the grade book?? I had no idea that she’d put a zero in for my test. I was just a distractible kid with undiagnosed ADHD who… forgot to stay after school because my usual routine was to get on the bus
I didn’t say that of course. I just nodded in absolute befuddlement and then stayed to take my test that day
I’m much older than 12 now but I still remember my confusion and shame and the bolt of momentary panic before she told me she would let me do the test and I’m like. idk. it kind of stuck with me. I was 12. I was a pretty good student otherwise, yeah distractible but in a quiet “doodle on every paper near me” and “has two to three books on hand at any given time so I don’t get bored” kind of way.
I think even after all these years I still don’t understand why she felt like she had to scare me
