sorry if this question is already answered elsewhere but how much time passes between the creation of ishmael vs the modern siren setting with qedivar et al?
intentionally never stated because i don't want to box myself in with a ridiculous number that i have to retcon later haha. safe to say it's several centuries, maybe a thousand years, maybe less. who knows!
#i know i should figure it out eventually (and i will) but i need to leave room for a good amount of evolution for the sirenians#(although they do have an accelerated sort because something something genetic modification plastic morphologies etc)#while not leaving so MUCH room that it would make zero sense for the 'modern' sirenians to be living with a 1600s ish level of technology#now there's a problem there as well - they started off already knowing a lot of the basics about their world and life in general#but lost a lot of their ability to maintain that information as computers & material technology on siren relied heavily on settler machines#which eventually fell into disrepair. and siren itself does not have a high density of metals in the crust suitable for mining#their technology & material science development is hampered by having to invent it all from scratch and also not having the resources#setting: siren

God, more modern sci-fi needs more buttons and dials and wheels and gears and levers and doodads and whatchamacallits to press and spin around again, give those actors some enrichment in their enclosures, you're depriving them of essentials to their well-being
#sci fi#science fiction#give me this also in real life modern technology#also give them silly outfits and a budget of some string as nature intended

Lilac Doesn’t Co-Exist with Dragons
I realized all my favorite things cannot co-exist
That drying flowers cannot be my favorite,
I’ve seen roadside wild ones too.
that a quiet house cannot be made
from a house full of friends.
to live alone, does not pair along
with living among love.
sometimes I like my time in absence.
I try to pair my favorite things together.
Perhaps if they entwine here,
I can live to enjoy this place.
But as I look at it now,
I try not to save these things for later,
for they might not be here.
In attempts to see us together in life.
I tend to over look what I already have.
my favorite color does not match the story of my book
lilac cannot co-exist with dragons
how dull is a life without each favorite thing?
but perhaps they are better separate,
for there is no lilac dragon.

Oooh maybe Mafia and Balckmail for the ask game? With Elrond? Only of you feel like it, no pressure or anything.
[send me 1-3 tropes + 2-3 characters!]
Elrond opened his eyes and saw what should have been an unused surgery room. The plaster on the walls was broken, the pipes in the ceiling were exposed—it was the east wing of the hospital, roped off for renovations that had been "in progress" the entire time he'd been a med student here.
But there were lights on, tools laid out, a patient on the surgery table in front of him—no, a body. That woman was fresh from the morgue, her body bag discarded in the corner. Other bags (full? empty?) lay on the floor nearby. On the counter by the sink was a stack of portable freezer boxes.
"Oh, you're organ-harvesting," Elrond said. That did explain the pattern of missing and mutilated corpses.
There was a clatter behind him as his captor startled at his words. Elrond did tend to wake up unusually quickly—though really, who wouldn't, when handcuffed to an uncomfortable hospital chair?
Dr. Inglewood regained her dropped scalpel held it as a threat as she stalked into view.
"Yes," she said. "But if you know what's good for you, you'll keep quiet about it—or whatever dismal neighborhood your scholarship affords rent in will have another random mugging-gone-wrong, and I'll make a mint off of the fresh organs of a caucasian male age 18 to 35." She sneered. "With your 'family connections', nobody will even blink."
Elrond wiggled his wrists in his handcuffs. They were tight.
"They probably wouldn't," he admitted. "And I like all my organs where they are."
"Smart boy—"
The magnetic lockpick Elrond had tucked into his cuff earlier clicked through the pin on the cuffs. Without losing a second, he leapt up and swung the loose cuffs at Dr. Inglewood's head. She dodged by stumbling back, squawking with alarm. In her distraction, Elrond swept her knees out from under her, grabbed her scalpel, flipped it around and put it to the nape of her neck while he knelt and wrestled her arms up behind her back.
He said, conversationally, "But I don't really think you're thinking through the implications of 'kidnapped and raised by the Fëanorian Mob' either. Ma'am, you are not dealing with an amateur."
#ask meme#elrond#this is honorarily part of that modern au feanorian mafia au#that is in a couple posts...somewhere#though actually it occurred to me 2/3 through that if my headcanon for canon is that elrond only got into healing as a real life pursuit#AFTER elros's death; and before that he was more adventuring archeologist/anthropologist/archivist#then maybe in a modern au he goes into library sciences instead of med school & this should be a conspiracy about idk...#stealing and selling rare books? but also a) the imperative to preserve lost cultures is less important in a modern au with#no or at least LESS nigh-genocides and literal continental destruction#and b) i'd already described the creepy semi-used surgery room and corpses

“The Hindu religion is the only one of the world’s great faiths dedicated to the idea that the Cosmos itself undergoes an immense, indeed an infinite, number of deaths and rebirths.
It is the only religion in which the time scales correspond to those of modern scientific cosmology. Its cycles run from our ordinary day and night to a day and night of Brahma, 8.64 billion years long. Longer than the age of the Earth or the Sun and about half the time since the Big Bang.” ― Carl Sagan, Cosmos

still thinking abt some of my father's furry christian mystery stories. in one of them, the detective cat went to god to ask Him for rain and god told him to go back into his lab and seed the clouds with silver iodide.
#the worm speaks#i may have had a deeply christian upbringing but it was also an upbringing deeply respectful of modern science#like it was a very morally and socially conservative upbringing but scientifically we could and would go ham#which is why it's kind of fascinating to see how some of my surviving aunts on my dad's side have just been like#closing themselves off to stuff like Modern Medicine(tm) or the concept of evolution#i will admit i find my father to be a fascinating old man who has always done his best to live his life fully awake#n thoughtful of everything that comes his way even if he ultimately concludes that he disagrees#like i'm aware this is the father-hating website but i do think my own at least understands what it is to be human

Why did academia have to change?
(All of this might be different in your country)
I like watching interviews with social scientists I admire. Or reading about their life. Or, if they were my professors, listening to them talk.
When they talk about their life, their time at their university and their early career, their experiences often sound like they grew up in a parallel universe.
They often talk about how they started studying a different subject, took some courses in different fields, took one or two semesters just immersing themselves in a very specific topic that interested them at the time, chilling at the library, debating philosophical topics with other students, and ended up getting a degree in a semi-related field because their PhD advisor liked their idea or whatever.
When I went to uni, I had to choose between specific bachelor programs. If I'd wanted to change subjects, I would have had to completely switch and start from the beginning, and would have maybe been able to transfer some credits, if the courses were close enough. Joining some seminars just for fun? Hell no, there is just enough room to barely fit the students who actually study this field, adding an extra chair would violate the fire safety regulation! Taking some time to just read about an interesting subject while not taking classes? Try to get an approval to pause your studies, otherwise you are either done after 8 semesters or you are thrown out without a degree.
The professors today see that problem. They often talk about how students today have only a very shallow knowledge about their fields, about how students just learn information, and not how to think critically, for themselves. And they don't complain in a boomer "kids these days" way, they see that the problem is the system, not the students.
I sometimes hear employers complain in similar ways. How their new graduate employees don't know what to do when things require off-script solutions.
The students aren't happy as well. They are stressed, feeling like impostors, writing essays about topics they have barely researched, while working part-time to survive. Hoping to retain enough information to pass the next exam.
If no one is happy, why can't it just change back.

Gods on Other Planets: Addressing Criticisms of Kolob and LDS Beliefs
A Recently Discovered Exoplanet that is astonishing similar to earth Critiques of Latter-day Saint doctrines, particularly those centered on Kolob and the concept of “gods on other planets,” often rely on misunderstandings or oversimplifications of profound theological principles. Futures Made of Virtual Insanity...

Every few decades, there's a new technological something or the other.
Some innovation, something to wow.
Something brand new.
An iron lung.
A shiny new space suit.
Gilded wings.
An iPod.
A Walkman.
A Discman.
A radio.
A microwave.
A television.
A computer.
LCD, HD.
4K, 8K.
Google Glass, Metaverse.
AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Mail.
Netscape Navigator, Geocities, Angelfire.
Sidekick, iPhone.
3G, 4G, 5G.
Text messages, Wifi.
Xbox, Playstation, NES, Atari.
Have you figured out yet how fucking fake, forced, contrived & scripted it all is?
Do you really think they haven't developed a battery for cell phones yet that can last a week? A month?
Did you know that plastic is actually extremely durable yet 9 billion tons of disposable plastic has been produced since the 1940s?
Why do you think that is?
Do you actually think they give us new technology when its invented?
Are you aware we still haven't figured out how ancient Egypt built the pyramids?
If we're so technologically advanced, why haven't we built our own pyramids?
HD or high definition has actually been around since at least the 1990s if not earlier.
The technology for supersonic commercial flights has been available since the 1970s.
What's presented as new & shiny was actually invented millennia ago by ancient Egyptians. Who were themselves aliens.
They are stealing from ancient Egyptian technology then presenting it to you as new and impressive.
They release a bit at a time to the public literally thousands of years after the original inventions to great fanfare & money.
They have had the ability to clone, gene splice.
Human experimentation.
Interspecies hybridization.
Everything in X Files represented truth.
Government lies, purchasing technology from aliens in exchange for humans that were then harvested for their DNA & experimented on for biological warfare.
Every age is unprecedented...until the next age.
Don't you see how fucking contrived that is?
Every age is unrivaled and revolutionary...until it is surpassed, sometimes a mere twenty years later, by a new and unrivaled revolutionary age.
Wash, rinse, repeat every few decades.
Still, you don't see a pattern?
Skunkworks at Lockheed Martin "developed" stealth aircraft with cloaking capabilities in the 90s.
All of this was stolen from ancient Egypt.
Flip phones, smartphones, iPhones.
Dial up, wifi, 3G, 4G, 5G.
So, what will 10G be like?
HD, LCD. 4K, 8K.
What will 16K be like? What about 32K? What about 48K?
Have you figured out how fucking fake & contrived & scripted all this bullshit technology is?
The metaverse has existed for literal decades.
They stole all of this from ancient Egypt and then present it to the public at intervals of a few decades as "technological advancements", "innovations" and "wizardry".
Snowcrash spoke of the metaverse back in the 90s.
Ready Player One depicted it in film two decades after Snowcrash.
Facebook developed it "in real life" a few years ago then paused it.
The covid shut down was the soft reset for AI & robotics which is when they are going to unleash the metaverse, AR & VR & the elimination of at least 80% of all current jobs.
They stole all of this and they keep it hidden then release it to the public bit by bit at regular, predictable, timed & scripted intervals as "brand new technology".
Haven't you noticed any obvious patterns yet?
The present is always ever evolving and what is considered cutting-edge today, just five years from now, will be considered the "distant past".
Why would anyone watch TV in 8K? Thank god we have 32K now!
Why would a song ever last for 4 minutes? Thank god the average song length is now two minutes.
In just twenty years, two full minutes was lost.
What happens when songs become one minute on average?
What happens when two hour movies are shortened to one hour?
What happens when episodic TV that is a half an hour or an hour becomes TikToks and Youtube Shorts?
What happens when books are no longer printed and published and everything is Audible or its presented in comic book manga style?
Who would ever want to read hundreds of words with no pictures, color, sound or audio?
No matter how many times this cycle is repeated, it is rarely questioned.
Now, there are Smart TVs! And phones! And refrigerators! And ovens! And washing machines!
All interconnected via wireless bluetooth device!
Alexa can tell me if the ingredients I need for my dinner are in my fridge then pre-set my oven for me while I am on the way home from work.
Five years ago is now an eternity.
A four minute song is now an eternity.
Reading a book -- not listening to a book, not reading a manga or comic book which are pictures & words -- reading an actual book with nothing but actual words is becoming an anachronism.
A book, not a tablet -- not staring at a screen, not scrolling, not "tapping" to turn the page.
An actual book, with pages, where you the human, turn the pages of the book with your hand.
Ice Age, Stone Age.
The future's made of virtual insanity...
Ice Age Cometh - Ice Age

Stone Age, heat wave - Stone Age

Informatics - Information Age
Digitization - Digital Age

AI - Age of AI & Robotics

Biohacked Transhuman - Age of Wearables & Implantables

We are all Ozempians & Wegovians - Age of Ozempic & Wegovy

A Revolution for whom? - Industrial Revolution

Modern Stone Age - Postmodern Age

Virtual Insanity - Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality Age

Technolyzed - Technology Age

Death of the Written Word - Age of Typography
Mechanistic Mechanized Humans - Machine Age

Spaced Out - Space Age

Jetting to the Future Past - Jet Age

Cassettes. LPs. VHS. VCR.
Compact discs. Cable TV. DVR. Holograms.
Cloning. DNA splicing. Species hybridization.
Toasters. Freezers. Fax machines. Printers.
Personal computers. Typewriters. Beepers. Pagers.
Google Glass. AR. VR. AI.
Remote controls. Answering machines. Call waiting. Caller ID.

What's the next fake Age in this never ending quest for fake ass futurism & technoworship?

Church Update #1
Hello Brothers and Sisters in the Atom,
I wanted to share a quick update on my surgery, which I mentioned in today’s sermon. The procedure went smoothly, and I’m already on the road to recovery. The torn tendons are on their way to healing, and I’m grateful for the surgeons, radiologists, and other medical professionals that made this possible.
As I rest and recover, I’m reflecting on the gift of science and how it helps us rebuild and thrive. Thank you for being part of this journey with me. If you have your own stories of healing or resilience, I’d love to hear them. Let’s continue to build this community together.
May the Atom sustain you, always.

The problem with modern science fiction is that soooo much of it is built around the concept that technology is inherently evil, isolating, and brain numbing. You can see these themes as far back as the 1940s-1960s with telephones, radios, typewriters, etc. Hell, I bet it dates back to the Victorian era and the creation of the genre. Horror stories predate sci-fi so it could go all the way back to the invention of movable type. But the thing is, instead of “smart phones will turn us into mindless drones,” we could he exploring really cool themes. Like, the Mars Rover sings to itself. So, why is there no post human extinction book about the very last surviving robot who’s terrified because it is left all alone and comforts itself by singing to itself? Why are we not telling more stories about a society where we automatically accommodate the disabled with cool cyberpunk style accessibility tools, artificial limbs, etc. I don’t want more fictional stories about people dying because they can’t afford water or medication in the post apocalyptic society since that’s already happening right now. I want a futuristic mystery where the hero uses social media to track down and stop the killer/protect potential victims. *sigh* rant over.
