as mentioned in my op tags: i could PROBABLY find a way to make analogue costume changes work for most of the characters… but also it is a pain in the ass. lol.

of course for some of them it would still be a magical girl transformation, particularly for like... the illusionists like the psykopomp or auraglow, and maybe still for scratch since their flames involve teleportation anyway (which is essentially what the magical transformation is; teleporting a different outfit on) but for others like dr. wormwood, it's like, her power is super strength and LARPing...

and then there's TJ who only starts wearing a costume after he realizes he can pretend he's a bootleg power ranger... lmao

there's an element to the upgraded costumes that can be handwaved to some extent in that they are made by specialty tailors in most cases, not by the heroes themselves but by people such as Sonam/Solomon (Sulum) or other tailors... but that's just in terms of like, form factor and useful features rather than anything else.

And in the case of eg Geckonyx if she can't henshin her way between glove and headwear styles then that makes it so that the conflicting needs of both being a wallcrawler and venomous, which is to say full vs fingerless gloves and helmet vs mask, is more of a PITA— though hypothetically I could probably also say she has a bit of a specialty case w/ the construction of gloves and helmet being a built in technological thing. Like, the whole thing w/ the Garden of Eden Meta-Atelier is that Sonam is a shapeshifter so they are in fact working on shapeshifting textiles, so that on its own is pretty easy to handwave if we assume that Naomi goes to Sonam's shop for her costume even though Sonam's shop is technically illegal and not certified to be in business. (lol) Or that there are certified metahuman tailors with similar tech of course. which itself raises the question of like, well I'd need to double check to see if Naomi is registered as a vigilante because there's a reason Sonam is blackmarket, because of material restrictions, approval processes, etc. and if Naomi has carbon nanotubes in her costume it would likely either need to be blackmarket or approved through bureaucratic loopholes, which, either is probably workable particularly because the CNTs' main function in her costume is to allow her to wallcrawl without being barefoot... as opposed to being like... some weird body armor or smth

feels like kind of a cop-out to make all the costume stuff in scratchverse work via magical girl style transformations but also. it does make my life easier. lmao.

slightly updated costume for Annie (mostly just the black respirator muzzle thing, but also the logo on her chest) PLUS a new costume, for being in space. It was just a concept I thought of recently and sounded fun.

finally decided to update the costumes for these two to give them a more consistent shared aesthetic and to make them look more professional

two versions, i just had this image in my mind of a pink jumpsuit that i really wanted to draw. maybe the jumpsuit is for winter and the pantsless one is for summer or something lol

I think she goes for the pixie cut eventually 'cause i like it and i think it's cute and I Love Butch and also TJ-related character reasons wrt sensory preferences, but also i'm not sure how long it would take her to be comfortable with haircuts because of plot stuff.

Relationship with:

The Psykopomp: Antagonistic, playful, teasing, flirty. They're "enemies" but REfactor is not too concerned as long as the Psykopomp doesn't hurt anyone.

Lilith: Very flirty, still teasing and antagonistic at times. TJ has a big-time crush on Lilith and likes to pull her pigtails a little. Mostly he just flirts badly at her.

Kent: TJ and Kent know each other from the BDSM club. They become friends and TJ eventually asks him out. Kind of an open relationship, FWB, rebound situation…

Dr. Augustine: TJ's therapist, Dr. Augustine. Psychic vampire, feeds on TJ's emotional highs and lows and takes advantage of him/seduces him. Possibly is involved in the leadup to TJ's imprisonment? Undecided.

Lilith:

Relationship with:

TJ: TJ is an Annoying awkward dumbass. Unfortunately he's kinda cute… and he has a nice butt. something something "I can't not fuck him."

REfactor: REfactor is A thorn in the Psykopomp's side. He doesn't always try to stop her though. Mostly he's just annoying and inconvenient…

Kent: TJ's manfriend, Kent. They don't know each other all that well but in theory have some shared tastes and Kent is pretty friendly. Lilith doesn't mind if TJ dates him as long as TJ also dates her.

JJ:

(This is TJ several years later, after having been imprisoned and exploited, and in the process of transitioning.)

Relationship with:

Kent: Kent and JJ still care for each other but are no longer in a relationship.

Lilith aka the Psykopomp: Allies, now, and have been romantically involved for several years off and on. Lilith/The Psykopomp helps TJ/JJ leave the state and stay in contact w/ family.

Kala aka Veritas: Kala/Veritas helps TJ acquire a new identity (JJ) and is a general connection to the vigilantes of Seattle as well as an ally who assists REfactor when needed.

Sonam, who goes by many aliases: Sonam is a blackmarket tailor. They are involved in the creation of REfactor's new armor and are a connection to other vigilantes as well. Also possibly a roommate. Still deciding.

Scratch: Scratch is another vigilante. They don't know each other well at all but after initially clashing it's likely that they would become allies.

Lilith again:

After some time has passed.

Relationship with:

JJ: ex-boyfriend, maybe current girlfriend…? It's complicated. Lilith is a little softer toward JJ nowadays but they don't see each other as often anymore. They keep in touch, though.

REfactor in new armor: The Psykopomp has only rare occasion to interact with REfactor when in Seattle, but considers her an ally. Mostly helps long-distance.

Kala aka Veritas: Kala/Veritas is mostly a stranger to Lilith but she helped Lilith help TJ/JJ, and is an ally. They do communicate on occasion but each has their own business to deal with.

Sonam:

they have many more customers

Relationship with:

Kala aka Veritas: Veritas is a customer and ally. Sonam also finds Kala very attractive.

Scratch: Customer

JJ aka REfactor: Customer but Sonam also has some access to JJ's private life and likely offers her sanctuary in their tailor shop/home. Each keeps to themself otherwise.

Cassia: Sonam and Cassia know each other through their shared profession/pastime as tailors for metahuman customers. Cassia works "Above board" but… has connections.

Seth:

Relationship with:

Sonam: To Scratch, Sonam is both a source of information as well as a tailor who will not ask for ID or license.

REfactor: REfactor is a little bit overwhelming at first but the two will likely ally at some point.

Veritas: Veritas is mostly a stranger to Scratch but they may ally at times, as needed. Both work outside the law.

Seth continued:

Gemini and Taurus: Gemini and Taurus are antagonists/villains. Part of a private metahuman security force owned by SynTel. Possible Heel-Face turn(s), possibly Scratch's first fight.

Nekromantis: Nekromantis is a supervillainess. Not sure exact details but Scratch certainly doesn't get along with her… She's a necromancer, also.

Casey: Casey is Seth's love interest <3 and coworker lol. He's very romantic and Seth enjoys dancing with him a lot. He makes them feel special.

Deacon and Mei: Deacon and Mei are Seth's besties. They also work at an autobody shop and are Seth's trusted confidantes re: Scratch, and help them with their motorcycle.

Kala:

Relationship with:

Cassia: Cassia is a childhood friend of Kala's as well as an off-and-on friend with benefits. The two care deeply for each other. Cassia is also a metahuman tailor.

Sonam: Kala knows Sonam through Cassia somehow… Sonam is a useful ally and eventually… a friend? Sonam and Cassia both assist Kala with her costume.

JJ aka REfactor: Kala doesn't know TJ/JJ/REfactor super well but she is seeking to root out corruption and exploitation and in this process helps JJ find a new identity and home. They are allies.

i considered his family doing an empty niche in a mausoleum but the locker room linoleum floor aesthetics are so bad and TJ is a rambunctious very active outside kind of guy so small empty grave instead. when he does eventually die he'll be cremated (unlike his mom) and they'll just bury the urn in front of the existing headstone.

TBH I considered multiple things to put on TJ's headstone and I'm still not sold on "loving son & grandson" because it feels a little generic but, no more generic than "beloved daughter" etc. lol — maybe if i come up w/ something better in the future i'll change it.

also i just copy-pasted the cyrillic for TJ's mom's name so if it's like... wrong... I don't THINK it's wrong but if it is lmk.

Also, no, TJ does not actually die at age 31 lol — but there is a point where he is disappeared and his family is told he's dead. His dad doesn't necessarily believe it but what else can you do 🤷

as far as all the crosses go, fwiw TJ is extremely lapsed but he was baptized as a baby and went to sunday school for a little bit as a kid and they do occasional xmas and easter stuff. dad is also kind of lapsed but btwn dad and baba (and aunt and paternal grandparents' influence) some crosses make sense and his empty grave is probably in a catholic cemetery, so they might require a religious symbol anyway...

TJ was raised in the latin tradition but mom's side is mostly eastern catholics (tho mom herself kind of assimilated) so eastern cross is partly just about his heritage in this case rather than him being raised in an eastern catholic tradition... though i'm sure there are things he does at home with baba (like easter) that are more influenced by eastern catholicism

not new art, but recolors of existing art. since it's 🌈pride month🌈 I thought it would be fun to do some pride-themed recolors of some of these guys' costumes.

I stuck to just these four to keep it simple but in theory I could do everyone lol

Bright yellow catsuit just strikes me as a bit much, is all 😅 — anyway, lesbian and intersex for Kala! I couldn't come up with any good puns for Veritas or Scratch lol

agender and rainbow/gay pride for Seth — they can't magically change the color of their costume but they can change the flame color, so... that's always fun.

Lilith and TJ have the same color schemes since they're both bisexual and, eventually, both trans lol — and let me tell you, not news, but the bisexual flag colors are such a pain in the ass to work with. But you know what. It's in-character for TJ's attempt at a bi-colored costume to be fugly. the Bikopomp and BIfactor... Bykopomp? well anyway.

Lilith actually would be able to change the color or appearance of her costume at will since she's got that whole "illusions" thing going on.
