I have a lot of feelings about the use of AI in Everything These Days, but they're not particularly strong feelings, like I've got other shit going on. That said, when I use a desktop computer, every single file I use in Google Drive now has a constant irritating popup on the right-hand side asking me how Gemini AI Can Help Me. You can't, Gemini. You are in the way. I'm not even mad there's an AI there, I'm mad there's a constantly recurring popup taking up space and attention on my screen.
Here's the problem, however: even Gemini doesn't know how to disable Gemini. I did my own research and then finally, with a deep appreciation of the irony of this, I asked it how to turn it off. It said in any google drive file go to Help > Gemini and there will be an option to turn it off. Guess what isn't a menu item under Help?
I've had a look around at web tutorials for removing or blocking it, but they are either out of date or for the Gemini personal assistant, which I already don't have, and thus cannot turn off. Gemini for Drive is an integrated "service" within Google Drive, which I guess means I'm going to have to look into moving off Google Drive.
So, does anyone have references for a service as seamless and accessible as Google Drive? I need document, spreadsheet, slideshow, and storage, but I don't have any fancy widgets installed or anything. I do technically own Microsoft Office so I suppose I could use that but I've never found its cloud function to actually, uh, function. I could use OneNote for documents if things get desperate but OneNote is very limited overall. I want to be able to open and edit files, including on an Android phone, and I'd prefer if I didn't have to receive a security code in my text messages every time I log in. I also will likely need to be able to give non-users access, but I suppose I could kludge that in Drive as long as I only have to deal with it short-term.
Any thoughts, friends? If I find a good functional replacement I'm happy to post about it once I've tested it.
Also, saying this because I love you guys but if I don't spell it out I will get a bunch of comments about it: If you yourself have managed to banish Gemini from your Drive account including from popping up in individual files, I'm interested! Please share. If you have not actually implemented a solution yourself, rest assured, anything you find I have already tried and it does not work.

It digs at my brain that the soundtrack for S2 is full of passion. These artists truly went all out for the season and the story simply didn’t meet them at their level. “To Ashes and Blood” is so moving. It has a choir of literal children singing a prayer for clean air in a language made up for Zaun. (I’m always a sucker for children’s choirs). I almost cry when I hear it because nothing hits me harder than when art hangs a spotlight on the innocence and vulnerability of children who are so inured to hardship that they sing and pray and play games that mirror or comment on the exploitative forces that make their lives miserable, where praying to a deity for clean air is simply something that exists and is widespread.
It only retroactively makes me even more supportive of Silco. At the very least, before his turn to darker means, he undoubtedly grew up singing that song. And it was children—Felicia’s children (if you want to follow the canon strictly)—that he was trying to fight for. It’s what Silco was referencing during the chembaron meeting. He’s a Machiavellian mob boss that employs child labor but clearly clean air is very important to him. He will not let any of the barons forget what it was like Before. S2 puts a wrench in the works because it introduces shit that should’ve been present or accounted for in S1 and I haaaaate it when that happens. More competent writers would’ve been able to make the integration of new elements more seamless. but moving on…..
There was acceptable set-up in Act I with the introduction of Isha as a little sumpsnipe miner, the Janna imagery, the chembarons scrabbling for power, the scuffle of Jinx + Sevika vs. Caitlyn + Vi …
They had Paint the Town Blue in Act 2 for the police brutality and martial law!! All of this great music telling, compelling, revving up the audience that “these are big themes you guys!” and then the story does nothing with them! Like all you need is to just make a song and you can consider it dealt with. I know it’s been said a thousand times, but this season should’ve been exclusively about Zaun finally throwing off the yoke of Piltover, and I’m gonna say it, it didn’t deserve to win all of those Annie Awards for storytelling/writing because WHAT writing.

Reading Alice Echols 1983 Cultural Feminism article, it was when i read this passage that i had to post about it on tumblr. She is here discussing arguments from books like Of Woman Born by Adrienne Rich from 1976 (which made the ridiculous "mind-body dualism" argument) and a book by radfem philosopher Susan Griffin about pornography from 1981.
"More recently anti-pornography activists have extended their critique to encompass fantasy which they suggest is dangerous because it entails the substitution of an illusion for the "social-sexual reality" of another person. In rejecting as so much "male-identified mind-body dualism," the notion that fantasy is the repository of our ambivalent and conflictual feelings, cultural feminists have developed a highly mechanistic and behavioris- tic analysis that conflates fantasy with reality and pornography with violence. "Integrity," their answer to patriarchy's dangerous dualism, encourages us to transform all aspects of our lives into one seamless, unambiguous reflection of our politics.Such a view assumes that we can and should be held accountable for our fantasies and bedroom exploits."

"Lesbian feminists, whose coming out is very often politically motivated, have both shaped and been shaped by this notion of "integrity." The elusive quest for egalitarian relationships and politically correct sex has encouraged lesbian cultural feminists to de-emphasize sex on ideological grounds. And reading this made me realize, it's the same fucking dumb arguments i've seen on tumblr in the 2010s and 2020s. It's the same nonsensical argument as the whole fucking anti-shipping moral crusade.

Then Mallium was discovered, a chemical that - used precisely - made the fusion of metal and flesh totally seamless, with no risk of the body rejecting the machinery.
Thus, the cyber age was propelled forward, and within a short few decades, most of humanity was augmented with cybernetics - for better and for worse.
Amid the many boons this age brought, a few concerned studies were silenced when they found evidence to suggest that Mallium had dangerous long-terms effects.
The corporations of today make so much money from cyberware, and any suggestion there might be risk was shut down. So Mallium continued to be produced and distributed worldwide, integrating technology into our skin, as well as playing a key component in other pharmeceuticals.
Until December 31st, 2099.
Marko Rodnik, 58, was attending a christmas event in Leeson Square, at the heart of Sonja City.
Rodnik had recieved many surgeries and cybernetics in his lifetime, due to various chronic illnesses. Most recently he had recieved an implant in his throat and oesophagus, a kind of internal life support machine, to compensate for breathing difficulties.
Halfway into the evening, Rodnik became suddenly very ill, and an ambulance was called. As emergency services arrived, Rodnik seemingly fell unconscious.
The following is taken from the account of a surving EMT, who witnessed the ensuing event :

It only lasted for a moment though. Then he woke up and turned to his wife. Mrs Rodnik hesitated for a moment, she looked confused or stunned.
Then she tried to scream.
But Mr Rodnik– Marko.. something came out of his mouth. Long, silver, dripping with a dark liquid. A red, pink mass hung from the end, spotted with white. His throat bulged, lips peeled back, like he was throwing up his innards.
She tried to scream, but the silver mass shot toward her neck.
There was so much blood.
Then Marko turned to us. His eyes were bright, and the silver mass rose slowly, like a snake preparing to strike. I ran. There were cries and shouts behind me, crowds fleeing, and a howling scream of something inhuman.'
This was the first documented instance of 'Malice', the consequence of exposure to high amounts of Mallium. Many such incidents followed. Now this threat lurks over humanity indefinitely.
Such widespread use of Mallium means that almost all humans are already contaminated with it. And so far, no cure or vaccine has been found.
We now live in a world where monsters roam the quarantined and abandoned cities, and neighbours watch eachother with suspicion, for fear that they might turn into a beast of flesh and steel.
