Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB 7200RPM 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s Desktop Drive
The drive has a 64MB cache and utilizes Western Digital's Data Lifeguard technology, which helps to protect data integrity during read/write operations. It also features NoTouch Ramp Load technology, which ensures that the recording head never touches the disk surface, thus reducing wear and tear and extending the drive's lifespan.

go to pull data to try and check something for my scientific research 👍 find out that the trump administration has pulled funding support for simply ARCHIVING the data because the instrument has the word “meteorological” in the title 👍 that’s an entire scientific mission lost folks 👍
#of course I know colleagues have downloaded it onto remote servers and private hard drives#but it’s absurd how this will now be a month long process I’m not going to undergo because I’ve never worked with this data before#and only needed the quick look for a check#when before February it would’ve taken me TWO MINUTES#fuck trump#oh my goooood im not even american and i have to deal with this

because i Must be working on a minimum of 50 things at once or I'll explode, i think im gonna get around to setting up a pihole for my network soon and then make this old server i snagged from work into a NAS cause ive got ample big storage drives to throw in it :3c
#crow.txt#i think i have at Least one RAIDable pair? mayyyyybe 2#i think i also have one 8tb drive. i think one of the pairs i have are 4tb each?#i think i have roughly 5 spare loose fuckin hard drives. just like. around. ive accumulated#theyre in perfectly good condition and made for servers anyway. which is why ive held onto them#ive just been waiting for a) a computer to make into a nas and b) time to go about setting that up#and luck would have it i got a pretty decent old xeon machine a month ago for free. sooooooo..#now the biggest effort is to slap some drives in and find somewhere to park it forever#...man i could maybe just do the pihole FROM the server? but i dont think itd run off truenas. nvm#i can genuinely just put the big black box somewhere and put the raspberry pi on top of it. and then never touch it lmao#remote access either when needed. and otherwise leave it be

if you as a fic reader ever become possessed by the urge to do a popularity bracket with the fics other people wrote and shared for fun and for free, consider:
don't ❤️
#just!!!! make a rec list!!!!!!!!!#popularity contests do nothing but drive writers out of fandoms by pitting people against their friends#and invariably result in people being assholes in the comments as if the people who wrote the fic can't see it#like ''oh clearly fic x is better than fic y''#or ''why is fic c even in this poll?''#nobody gains anything by you doing a bracket to see which fic is the ''most popular''#a stat which could be found more easily & less cruelly by simply hitting the sort by bookmarks/kudos button on ao3#anyway ugh. i saw that one of my fics was being pitted against one of my friend's fics in this bracket that's going around#and i have no idea who is ''winning'' because i refuse to look. but either way it's gonna feel bad!!!#because i want my friend to get his flowers so i want him to win!!! but i also would like to know that people like my fic!!!!#so it's just a lose/lose situation even though i generally don't give a shit about numbers#but this turns it into a schoolyard popularity thing#and the emotional response to having people *vote* on if your work is *better or worse* than other fic is hard to ignore#cannot reiterate enough JUST MAKE A REC LIST#or if you absolutely must do a bracket like this do it in a private chat server or something#don't create a public forum for people to pass value judgements where the authors can see it#and feel bad if they get told their fic is ''worse'' than someone elses#but also feel bad if they get told theirs is ''better'' because it came at the cost of telling another author they weren't good enough#ANYWAY i still feel sick with a super sore throat and a headache & am probably extra cranky because of it#(still testing negative thankfully so it's probably just weather/allergen related)#gonna go make some tea and prep the fic updates i want to post today#cass says things#fandom problems#wank adjacent

Sometimes I think "perhaps I am engaging in some needless paranoia by compulsively downloading all of my favorite things and making a personal archive of them all" then something I like stops being available online and I go "oh, no I am extremely reasonable about doing this"
#i have an external hard drive that i download fic/art/posts onto specifically because stuff disappears off the internet all the time#but i have also been doing this with things like podcasts and yt videos and anime recently#it started off as a 'internet is a little spotty here so it is nice to have offline copies of things'#but now it is like. 'i need to have a copy of this because it might be the only version that exists tomorrow'#it would probably be good if i also put it in cloud storage but consider: i don't wanna.#*rob zacny voice* maybe i should build a home server/nas

i am so deeply emotional about sbk right now. how the hell does a server this good exist
#skyblock kingdoms#sbk#yt#txt#orig#it's like -- the good kind of heartache i guess?#i love hearing people talk about storytelling in the way sbkers talk about storytelling.#i wish more mcyt stuff had fansongs and avid is out here creating bangers i can put on my driving playlist without fear.#i love the way everyone interacts on the server <- currently losing it over milkman complaining abt cherry kingdom being hard to steal from#and it's just. wow. this is it. this is peak. i am so contented with what we have right now.#like there's things i'd love to see but. i can write those things if i really need them. i am overjoyed with what we have already.#i am maintagging this because i want people to see this. i am so full of joy right now. just. man. sbk makes me wanna Make Stuff#in so many different ways it's a little overwhelming tbh. i want to get back into making music. i want to learn how to shade metallics.#i want to write music with lyrics and i want to write fics with weird formatting and i want to do drawn-out meta analysis#i wanna make aus that are just snippets and vibes. i wanna SING i wanna COSPLAY i want charms and stuff i just. aaaAAAAAAA!!!!

Umm it literally does tho? I've been doing it for years
#years as in just over two years#haters will tell you ddns aint practical. they are wrong#shills will tell you Amazon is easier. its not really#nothing beats opening up your server and sticking more hard drives in with your bare hands#linux#self hosted

the state of online streaming piracy these days is fucking abysmal........
#half the servers never work and the ones that do are always the ones without subtitles#and theyre all made to have such sleek interfaces i dont NEED that#like this used to be SO easy#you could find ANYTHING#give me websites that look like they havent been changed since the early 2000s that arent trying to mimic netflix#and finding subtitles has always been trickier but there was a while there where you COULD get subtitles pretty reliably#the best website for actually finding stuff. in my experience is primewire. which still looks old and nonfancy#unfortunately theres no built in subtitles on anything#theres often a list of subtitle files you can download and theoretically upload to what youre watching#but i can never get it to work reliably#anyway i tried to watch newsies on my friends disneyplyus and it just played the audio over a black screen#im wondering if thats how theyre doing their anti-password sharing lmao. bc it let me log in and browse. but then did that.#r.txt#im willing to download things but my HARD DRIVE BROKE
