see the fun part about worldbuilding is that you can do whatever you like, as long as it has an internal logic to it. if you're telling a fantasy story and you happen to use French as a linguistic basis for names and locations, you don't have to be 100% faithful to the ecology of the region of Alsace in the year 1732 in order to build a good setting. play with things. have fun. figure out reasons why things are the way they are (see: pigeons and public sanitation, sewer vampires)

the only person you're beholden to is yourself (and the tiny archivist living inside your brain who crumples papers in his fists like an old-timey cartoon accountant whenever you find out something you assumed is true is, in fact, a fabrication of popular history)
