while the comparison between between fuffy and catradora is obvious and probably intentional on the part of the she-ra writers, the more i think about it the less i think adora and buffy have in common as individual characters. like obviously their roles in their respective narratives are very similar, but beyond the fact that they're both blonde chosen ones with angry girlfriends and untreated mental health issues, they're actually really different.

buffy (correctly) views girlhood and childhood in general as one of the things that is being stolen from her due to the destiny she didn't ask for, and so she clings to symbols of her girlhood by her fingernails as a fuck you to the council. adora meanwhile was never encouraged to have a childhood or for that matter even likes, interests and wants that would in any way individualize her, and her whole arc is about how she should allow herself to want these things that were stolen from her. buffy hates authority and rebels against her destiny constantly whereas people are always begging adora to not just accept what she perceives as her destiny and allow herself to be happy once in a while.

also, and this is obviously to do with the fact that she-ra is for kids so it can't go as dark as btvs does (not that buffy is that dark, but it's certainly darker), but buffy is a much more like, hardened character than adora. i mean, she's still a fundamentally good person who believes very strongly that it is her responsibility to do right by everyone. she's flawed and makes mistakes, but she's by no means an anti-hero at any point in the series, despite having some serious low points. but even before her season 6 complete emotional breakdown era, buffy makes decisions that adora would never make in a million years. could you imagine adora stabbing catra in the stomach with catra's own knife? or casually torturing a vampire for information by sticking a cross in their mouth? or sacrificing the life of someone she loves (rather than just her own life), for the fate of the world? like lol no, she would never. and yeah, part of that is because she-ra is for kids, but i could imagine other she-ra characters making these kinds of decisions, just not adora.

and that's just early season btvs stuff! by the end of her run, buffy is still a deeply loving, good person, who rebels against authority (i mean yeah she becomes the authority figure that people are rebelling against for a while, but she ends up completely reconstructing the slayer system forever, so i think we can give her that), and makes silly quips and puns. but she's also a much harder, more closed off person. she's good but she isn't always nice. she's by no means ruthless (certainly not compared to a character like giles), but she does know that she's capable of doing some pretty cold shit for the greater good (trying to kill anya in selfless, the "chloe was an idiot" speech) even if she'll probably hate herself for these decisions for the rest of her life. adora also goes through plenty of trauma, but she never gets to be as messy about it (again, i know, kids show). if anything, her arc is about becoming more open to love and friendship, and less closed off and isolated.

point is, even though they occupy the same character archetype, i don't actually think buffy and adora all that similar, in their personalities or in how they change over the course of their respective shows. if anything, the btvs character adora most resembles is probably kendra, what with the fucked up child soldier upbringing, deference to authority and rules, inability to express their own desires and wants, and the fact that both appear to own only one outfit.

on the other hand, faith and catra *are* actually the same character in different fonts. i'll give you that.
