In 1898, Louisiana adopted a new constitution, which incorporated a "grandfather clause" into voting requirements. It stated that a person may only vote if their father or grandfather was eligible to vote on or before January 1, 1867, thereby disqualifying almost all black voters.

By 1910, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama and Oklahoma had adopted similar "grandfather clauses."

Five years later, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Oklahoma's grandfather clause violated the 15th Amendment. While other states had to get rid of their grandfather clauses, the ruling did little to aid the effort of Black Americans to gain voting rights in the south.

Things that cause me to FLIP MY SHIT (a series of posts by me cause humanity, especially fans, can be annoying sometimes)

1) DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT, demand that singers/artists/actors sing a song/perform something [for you] when they go live on social media platforms during this time. Shit is going down, and everyone has stressors to deal with. They have no obligation to sing for you or act out a scene just because you asked [demanded, really] them to. 

Context: I saw this happen earlier this year, when a singer I follow (won’t name names), went live on IG. They’d already been known to suffer from severe depression and had at one time survived an attempt. During this time, they were away from their family, isolated, and possibly a little down in the dumps (it was assumed from the context of the video that they had been drinking alone). While I understand being excited about seeing your favorite artist come out of hiding after months and showing their face, or updating the fanbase on how they’re doing or what they’re working on and everyone’s obviously going to be hyped, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND PEOPLE IN THE CHAT FUCKING DEMANDING THEM TO SING A GODDAMN SONG. LEAVE THEM TF ALONE, FFS. They’re having a rough time, all of us can see that. They are under NO OBLIGATIONS to entertain your demands. The person was upset and obviously down and THE ABSOLUTE INSENSITIVITY OF THESE PEOPLE pissed me off so much. 

These artists are human beings, they feel all the emotions that we do, but sometimes on a more extreme scale. They have to be careful of who they have around them, who they can trust and many times, they are isolated because of these issues. In cases, they might even experience more extreme forms of mood issues (depression, anxiety etc.) than us. 

Here’s some things you can do/say instead when they go live on social media or encourage fan interaction (unless they specify what they want):

a) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, RESPECT THEM.

b) ASK after them, their health.

c) DO NOT demand that they do anything for you (i.e. sing a song on the spot, perform a famous scene) Youtube, Apple music, Google music and Spotify exist for a reason. USE THEM. 

d) DO tell them it’s good to see them and that you hope they’ve been keeping well. 

e) ASK POLITELY if they’re working on new content

f) ASK if there’s any artists they would like to collab/work with in the future.

g) ASK if they have picked up any new hobbies in the past months

h) ASK how their pets are doing. Or their house plants. Or their pet tarantula (Idk, whatever they have that they enjoy taking care of)

i) Maybe comment about a book you’ve begun reading/a show you’ve started watching/a new artist you found that they might enjoy

j) AVOID at all costs: spamming their account, telling them they should do something (anything), they should visit/tour your home country - I know we want to see our fav artists up close and personal, but let’s be honest here, that’s not happening for a good few years, until the ‘rona is gone. 

k) BE KIND. BE UNBELIEVABLY KIND AND WHOLESOME
