An Epilogue
When we sat at home in our little office during the early months of 2024 planning this trip, we had no idea how it would pan out. Realistically, all we were doing was to choose a route, book flights, and accommodation. It was like buying a Christmas tree; just a bare framework for hanging the baubbles that really make the thing of beauty. We had no idea at that point if we would find the trip to be ultimately successful and rewarding or a complete flop.
The amazing thing about Australia is that it shapes your trip for you. We often say that when you start the day, you have absolutely no idea what this amazing country will throw at you, but without fail, fantastic things are always on offer: ancient rock art, mine trips, disused Uranium mine, dramatic waterfalls, intensely blue and impossibly deep pools, abandoned villages, and run down isolated villages with a population of 2 plus goat. So many times, a chance sight of an object has led us to research further to find intriguing stories and the opportunity to start joining the dots of the amazing history of this place. We have travelled through 3 states, covering 4,500 miles, through different climates, seasons, demographic populations, and social ramifications that result from the challenges raised by these. The Northern Territories were perhaps the most challenging in this respect. A shock having to show identity to the police before simply buying a bottle of SB or asking at the supermarket tills for staff to unlock the cabinet stocking antiperspirant. And yet, temporarily being a Territorian was exciting, experiencing a unique part of the world; vast open spaces, long empty roads, searing heat, tiny friendly communities, having beer in old verandaed pubs along with the setting sun, the Roadhouse that's an oasis in isolation not experienced anywhere in Britain, living alongside one of the oldest civilisations anywhere in the world. Meeting people also temporarily there; Road Train Drivers there overnight breaking the long journeys to the coast, tradies working long distance from home, roadworkers repairing carriageways in the middle of nowhere, the people who live there hardened to their remote way of life yet good honest people. Tourist; few. Then, moving to the coast and the delight of Magnetic Island, the beauty of the Whitsundays, the pure white vast deserted silica beaches that squeek under your feet. The solitude taking in the gorgeous sunsets across a million miles of wide open skies, paving the way to witness a myriad star filled universe, the Southern Cross, even skylab passing! This is a different place, a special place. The variety and diversity of this continent; vast areas growing sugar cane, mangos, bananas and avocados, huge activity in mining every mineral known to man showing the wealth of this continent. We loved seeing wildlife in their natural environment; crocodiles awaiting their evening baramundi meal at high tide, koalas stretching as they wake in their arboreal perch (marsupial not bear), kangaroos in the shade and startled by our presence in the heat of the midday sun, sea eagles circling, darter birds hoping for breakfast, the midnight thump on the roof from possums, waking to the laughter of kookaburras and the screeching of butcher birds. Wow, we miss all this already.
Distances are huge, communities separated, but when a bakery in Cloncurry was shut due to staffing problems, the bakery 278 kms further down the road knew all about it. When we drove 80 kms from Mckinlay having had a drink at the pub featured in Crocodile Dundee to Julia Creek, we passed only 4 vehicles along the long straight featureless unsealed road. These journeys can only be made when the tanks are full. We always fill up whenever there's a filling station available. Then, as though appearing from a long tunnel into the light, we find ourselves at the coast in Townsville, and we find a tourist town filled with Aussies seeking a holiday and a good time. Suddenly, the red earthed country is behind us, and the fields are green. We are still in the tropics, but it is cultivated, the first peoples have gone. The alcohol is freely available, the supermarkets are full and entrances free of alcohol and drug induced patronage. But the temperature has fallen ten degrees. We are now in manicured territory, with an atmosphere to be found anywhere in western vacation destinations. We love it, but it has lost that gritty, earthy edge we enjoyed so much in the outback and we felt a real sense of loss and regret, of having now finished the pioneering part of our trip, and found ourselves in what counts as normal life in Australia.
We had however the most excellent excursions along the East Coast; the flight over the Whitsundays and then over the Great Barrier Reef was superb, followed by the boat trip to the Whitsundays and landing at the Whitehaven Beach to see at close hand the white silica sand we had seen from the air. Later, still on an island theme, we visited K'gari and experienced the curiosity of an island built of sand, coming face to face with a Dingo, a wild dog with a notorious reputation. Sydney never fails to delight, and once again, it responded well. Our new year celebrations at the SOH were brilliant, and the subsequent fireworks were some of the best we have ever seen. Who could fail to be impressed by the bridge exploding in a blaze of colour and light and the booms of the massive fireworks, cascading sparkling trails above our heads over the iconic sails of the SOH accompanied by the gasps of approval of the crowd below. Magnificent as ever. Then it was to the cricket ground for my first ever test match. What a great day that was, and I have to report an awakened interest in the sport, not for the technical excellence or the skills involved, but more for the atmosphere the event generated.
Perhaps on reflection, our hearts could be seen to yearn to be back in the outback and especially the Northern Territories to be once again a part of those fantastic little, isolated places.
We will most likely think back to The Pebbles near Tenant Creek. The sunset over the land that the first peoples have inhabited for 60,000 years and consider most sacred, giving them a spiritual link to their past, was almost a spiritual experience for ourselves, too. There was a real sense of connection to their belonging in this place.
We can not, of course, overlook the experiences of Hong Kong, seeing Liam and Almond. This island, a former vestige of British rule, awakened into new vitality by its new masters, China. Clearly, the old Hong Kong still breathes, and the expatriate communities are still very much alive and well and must still bear influence. Behind the scenes, we could see the strength and resolve the new regime has, but the glitter and showmanship of this fascinating city is overwhelming. What a great place to bide a while. The investments there are breathtaking, such as the new 50 km bridge which plunges to the the depths of the ocean beneath, transforming itself to tunnel, in its progress to the old Portuguese protectorate of Macau; an amazing achievement. We loved every moment of this visit, the city built by the sea and of the sea. The society built across islands; we visited Kowloon, Lantau, Lamma of a possible 263! Still a few to go.
An amazing trip. Our thoughts now are that the more you see, the more there remains to see. Next time we should take less luggage, we should look carefully at climate and seasons v weather. Our interest and intrigue in Australia is by no means diminished. When people dismiss this place with a shrug and say it was okay, we are outraged. I mean, it's an opinion, I suppose, but this is a continent, not just a resort you go to for a fortnight. It needs unpicking, unravelling, exploring, discovering. We are blown away by the thoughts of the early explorers who picked away at it, in great danger inched their way across the great expanse of nothingness, massive mountain ranges, forest, swamps, immense heat, the most dangerous wildlife anywhere in the world, drought, flood, and Cyclones. And yet, in just over 200 years, this magnificent country has been transformed into the most fantastic interesting land imaginable, and we want to see a lot, lot more of it.

Speaking of spaceflight, I've been playing this game called Space Engineers that was on sale recently.
It's a sandbox game combining voxel mining with a grid-based vehicle/basebuilding game. The physics can be pretty finicky to put it mildly, but they've accomplished some crazy impressive technical stuff - procedural voxel terrain on the scale of actual planets. We spawned 'close together' which means kilometres of mountainous terrain.
For the voxels it uses smoothed marching cubes, and I think is doing something clever with octrees under the hood given how low detail transitions into high detail terrain. Since my current work involves working with those same algorithms I'm pretty blown away by how smoothly it runs. And all this with solid multiplayer netcode physics! I've been able to host a game with three players at 1440p ultrawide, with a rock-solid 120fps. I'd love to find some technical articles on how they made it.
Here's some stuff I've made in survival mode:
Tumblr media
My little mountain base, soon to expand into another module. Mining all the silica for that glass took forever but it's worth it for pretty windows.
Tumblr media
The Mk. 7 Extractivist. Good at getting itself stuck in holes in the ground.
Tumblr media
Mk.2 Scootabooter, prototype of a flying scout vehicle. Design had to be revised several times, but I don't have a good screenshot of the final version.
The really big stuff is yet to come. But the 6DOF flight mechanics are fun, there's a good variety of models to play around with, and the vehicle physics are interesting if rather finicky.
Ultimately it's a 'make your own fun' sort of game - there's something of a progression of things you can build, to mine more, to build more, etc., but the 'challenge' comes in making the contraptions you build actually work.
It's honestly a bit of a dangerous timesink of a game for me, scratching way too many itches at once, so I'm trying to limit how much I play it. But here I go posting about it instead...

Can Calcium Carbonate Powder Replace Traditional Fillers in Modern Manufacturing?
In the ever-evolving world of manufacturing, companies constantly seek materials that enhance product performance while remaining cost-effective. As industries adapt to environmental concerns and shifting economic factors that influence the use of Calcium Carbonate Powder emerges as a strong contender against traditional fillers. Could this mineral truly redefine how we approach industrial fillers?
Understanding Traditional Fillers in Manufacturing
Traditional fillers like talc, kaolin clay, silica, and carbon black have been extensively used for decades. They serve crucial roles in altering material properties, reducing costs, and enhancing processing capabilities. However, these fillers come with their own limitations—rising costs, limited reserves, and growing environmental concerns, which drive industries to explore alternative solutions.
What is Calcium Carbonate Powder?
At its core, calcium carbonate powder is a naturally occurring mineral composed of calcium, carbon, and oxygen. Found in abundance in limestone, marble, and chalk deposits, it is processed into a fine, white powder that can be incorporated into various manufacturing processes.
Historical Use of Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate isn’t new to the scene. It has long been used in construction (cement, lime), agriculture (soil treatment), and food industries (as a dietary supplement). But its role in modern manufacturing as a primary filler has only recently gained momentum.
How Calcium Carbonate Powder Differs from Traditional Fillers
Unlike many traditional fillers, calcium carbonate powder offers a unique combination of affordability, performance, and versatility. Its low abrasiveness, high whiteness, and excellent dispersion qualities make it ideal for a wide range of applications, setting it apart from its more expensive or environmentally challenging counterparts.
The Growing Demand for Sustainable Alternatives
Today’s manufacturers face mounting pressure to adopt greener, more sustainable practices. Traditional fillers, often requiring energy-intensive mining and processing, contribute significantly to environmental degradation. Calcium carbonate powder, being widely available and requiring relatively lower processing energy, presents an eco-friendlier choice.
Key Industries Using Calcium Carbonate Powder
Plastics Industry
In the plastics sector, calcium carbonate powder is increasingly favored as a filler. It enhances rigidity, improves dimensional stability, and reduces production costs, all while maintaining the desired mechanical properties of the plastic products.
Rubber Industry
Rubber manufacturers benefit from the inclusion of calcium carbonate powder by improving the stiffness and durability of rubber products. Its fine particle size allows for uniform dispersion, leading to superior product consistency.
Paints and Coatings Industry
Calcium carbonate powder acts as a functional extender pigment, contributing to better opacity, surface gloss, and paint durability. It also helps in reducing the reliance on more expensive titanium dioxide.
Paper Industry
One of the oldest applications, calcium carbonate powder, helps improve brightness, opacity, and smoothness of paper, while also enhancing printability and reducing production costs.

Stopping the Sand Crisis at Your Doorstep
Tumblr media
09 June 2025
We began our journey with a simple idea: the world has plenty of sand, but little of it is clean, traceable, and mined without harming rivers. Sand taken from the sea or desert cannot be used in concrete because it carries chloride or is too fine in grain size.
By contrast, large volumes of construction debris, excavated material, quarry fines, dredged silt, mining overburden, and even lightly contaminated soil already hold the silica and aggregate now dredged from waterways.
The true barriers have always been cost effective processing, consistent quality, and a reliable route to market. CFlo solved the first two challenges with its technology, and its subsidiary, Doctor Sand, built the marketplace that completes the loop. This achievement remains unmatched in the global sand industry.
A technology that extracts value from most waste streams
CFlo’s patented modular units ship in standard containers but are powerful enough to treat the widest range of feedstocks in the sector. A demolition pile passes through a purpose-built wet processing system and emerges as graded sand, aggregate, or screened soil ready for unburnt bricks. Even lightly contaminated soil can be recycled and given a second life. Each processing module sits on a single chassis run by an intelligent PLC, so capital stays low, operations are eco-friendly, and deployment is measured in days rather than months.
A trading platform that turns output into revenue
Once the waste is processed and ready for sale, Doctor Sand steps in. The subsidiary registers every producer as a Cloudmill partner and certifies each load for grain size, silt content, moisture, and, most important, the royalty payment proof that confirms legal origin. Concrete plants, block yards, and infrastructure contractors log in, enter their demand and specifications, and place live orders. The platform assigns the nearest Cloudmill to fill each request. Doctor Sand pays the Cloudmill within eight working hours, a sharp contrast to the three or four months of credit that still dominate the trade. The platform raises the Cloudmill’s net price, cuts the builder’s landed cost, and removes middlemen from a market long known for opacity.
A circular loop, not a one-off sale
Traditional equipment vendors sell a plant and walk away. CFlo delivers usable products from recycling and an end-to-end solution that lifts the value of every tonne of waste. Through Doctor Sand, each Cloudmill gains reliable buyers, fair prices, and robust volumes, so plant utilisation rises dramatically. With higher throughput and fast, secure payments, most Cloudmills recover their equipment cost in two to three years.
Addressable market and first-mover moat
Global demand for construction aggregates is climbing to record levels, even as regulators from Amsterdam to Andhra Pradesh tighten licences for river extraction. No other company combines proprietary recycling hardware with a nationwide offtake platform. CFlo holds several granted patents covering material handling, water recovery, and modular assembly. Doctor Sand complements this with a network of more than one hundred Cloudmills in seventeen Indian states. The platform accepts material from any efficient and ethical source, whether or not the Cloudmill runs CFlo equipment. Recreating this ecosystem would take years of industry knowledge, supplier onboarding, and buyer trust.
Impact in numbers
A single CFlo line rated at 200 tonnes per hour diverts about one million tonnes of waste each year. This prevents hundreds of kilograms of CO₂ emissions compared with river sand and removes the need for acres of landfill. Over the past 18 years, Cloudmills running CFlo technology have the capacity to produce more than 50 million tonnes of alternative sand each year - about five percent of India’s total demand. CFlo has also enabled the recycling of almost 1.5 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste across 12 cities, including both India’s first and its largest recycling facilities. These achievements give CFlo a clear, measurable ESG profile and place the company at the forefront of sustainable, clean-environment solutions.
Path to scale with capital efficiency
The global sand crisis has created an $85 billion supply gap that conventional mining cannot fill without severe ecological damage. By pairing CFlo’s processing technology with the Doctor Sand managed marketplace, we turn an environmental liability into a bankable asset, keep downstream value in-house, and deliver a fast scaling circular economy solution. This is not a future promise; it is a proven cycle that already turns muck into margin. CFlo’s growth story offers worldwide reach for its proprietary technology, steady recurring revenue, and an ESG profile that regulators and investors now expect.
CFlo is not just building machines; it is rebuilding the raw material economy so that waste replaces depletion. For customers and investors, this is an invitation to back the first end-to-end circular supply chain for a resource the world cannot live -or build - without.
