His ruhk is just gone.
He’s dead?
Not quite.
It’s been a week and Ja’far still doesn’t really understand what that means. He believes in death, he’s felt it, he’s caused it, he knows it exists. He doesn’t believe in curses, not when it comes to Sinbad. Yamuraiha has been sitting over Sinbad’s body, running every magic she’s ever been taught. Ja’far has sent her to bed with a cold composure, insisting that she can’t be of help to anyone if she passes out from exhaustion. Sharrkan promised to escort her to her room.
In the mean time, Ja’far hasn’t slept. He’s kept everything together, killed the Al Thamen agents responsible for whatever magic had sealed Sinbad out of his own body. He’s the one who dragged Sinbad’s hollow body back, covered in blood, wishing their positions had been reversed. He despaired at first, thinking he’d let Sinbad die. But he quickly reined himself in, getting back to work, doling out orders. The adrenaline that had fueled at first was sharp and short lived; a desire to distract himself. Now he feels hollow himself. He feels haunted.
He’s seeing Sinbad’s ghost; just whispers of his reflection. He’ll see flashes of gold and violet out of the corner of his eyes, just enough to make his breath catch. The first time there had been a momentary sense of relief flooding over him, a belief that Sinbad was back, that he wasn’t truly gone. But as soon as he turned around, the shadow was gone and Ja’far found himself alone. Now it’s just becoming almost annoying.
Ja’far is sitting in his office, well past midnight, pouring himself over scrolls. He looks up and knows Sinbad is there. Or at least part of him, he can see the hair billowing.
ā€œWhat do you want?ā€ It’s the first time he’s found himself talking to the presence in his office. ā€œSomehow you’re more annoying like this than in person. What are you even doing? I know you’re not dead. You’re too stubborn. Stupid. Do you know how much trouble you’re causing.ā€ There’s heat welling up in him. Anger. Grief. Exhaustion. Fear that he’s wrong and Sinbad really is gone forever.Ā  Rage that Sinbad would get himself into trouble like this. Self loathing that he let this happen. ā€œCome back already. Everyone’s working hard. You can’t get out of working too, not like this. We still need you.ā€
