??????? Most of the trades absolutely do require both literacy and math skills? There’s a reason why you have to go to trade school and/or do an apprenticeship? Construction requires a ton of math, appliance installation requires knowing the manuals inside and out, these ARE skilled jobs. The classism in this post is immense, yes illiterate people should not be working in the education sector but they also aren’t going to do very well in building or plumbing either.

When can I start talking about the genuine rise of illiteracy going on in the U.S. without being called ableist? Because I'm not talking about people whose first language isn't english or about people with actual disorders, diagnosed or not.

I'm talking about the fact that several of my professors don't know where to put commas, apostrophes, and are spelling words wrong that they DEFINITELY should be getting right in their position. I'm talking about the fact that a lot of grown adults don't know the difference between your/you're, it's/its or there/their/they're. I'm talking about this weird rise of people interchangeably using woman/women??

Mistakes are mistakes. I make mistakes CONSTANTLY. Does it crush my soul when I mix up your/you're? God, yes 😭.

So I'm not talking about mistakes. I'm talking about "they never taught us that" mfs. I'm talking about "whatever it's the same thing" mfs.

Eddie isn't going to be a fire fighter in El Paso. Forget the fact that he only gave Bobby the bare minimum notice before leaving and doesn't have a referral set up. He's walking away from more than just Buck and the 118 fam, he's walking away from his entire identity outside of being a *Dad*, and that includes being a firefighter. He's giving it all up, everything except Christopher. Partly as a form of self-punishment, and also because he thinks if he can be all-in on that one thing, then it can be enough. He can make it enough, because Christopher is his number one, and he hurt Christopher and needs to make it up to him, and that's all that matters right? Definitely not Eddie's happiness, that is the LAST thing that matters, in a world where Christopher isn't part of his life.

So Eddie gets an easy-to-get job that requires a strong body and few qualifications... construction. Or some similarly blue-collar job that doesn't require a skilled trade license. Maybe there's an accident or emergency at his jobsite that requires him to remember a bit about who he really is. But it won't be enough.

He'll start working on his extreme fixer-upper of a house *that Buck warned him about*. During the process, maybe he'll meet up with an old friend or old bully or someone he used to know. Maybe it's a contractor he's hired to help fix his house up, or maybe someone at his new job. But the point is, this person used to be all toxic masculinity and machismo, just like he was taught to be. But now, he finds out they're gay and have a husband and kids and are HAPPY and he'll ask them what happened? What changed? How did they figure it out? And this person will tell him a touching story of friendship, partnership, and choosing love - and everything they tell Eddie reminds him of Buck. The gears start turning in his head. But he isn't ready yet. Things aren't fixed with Christopher yet. He can't choose Buck until he has resolved things with his son. But maybe he's on the path to knowing what he wants, at this point.

Then - a disaster. Eddie's house is destroyed in a way that allows him to walk away with no lost investment or long term commitment he can't get out of. My guess? An electrical fire, because the house was so run down - and Buck WARNED him it was too run down. Regardless, the house is destroyed but Eddie will recoup his money through insurance, and now doesn't have anything *physically* tying him to El Paso anymore.

He will move in with his parents because he has no other choice. Tensions will RISE, and he will be confronted by (and have the opportunity to confront) his past. There will be an argument with his parents, and Christopher will overhear and step in to defend his dad. He finally gets an idea of what Eddie grew up with, why he is like he is and how different his grandparents were to Eddie than they are to him. This will spur a heart-to-heart between Eddie and Christopher where they FINALLY reconnect.

But this time, Eddie just isn't the *dad* who is strong and doesn't show any weakness. He will be human, vulnerable. Honest. And through Chris, he will get forgiveness, and finally find that he can forgive himself. This could also be where he admits his feelings about being away from Buck to Chris, and Chris urges him to go home to LA. Either they go back together, or Chris asks to finish the school year in Texas first - but promises to actually call and talk to him now, so Eddie won't be missing out on his whole life like he felt like he was before.

Eddie will return to LA whole and healed and ready to go after what he needs to make him happy. He will understand what he needs, and what he doesn't need. And he will know he needs Buck.

And because Eddie never tells anybody anything (and despite all his growth he's still EDDIE) rather than calling first, he will just show up on Buck's doorstep one day unannounced, in a parallel to the door scenes we had in 8x09 and 8x06.

Just watch. It's gonna happen. Especially Eddie's house getting destroyed and him recouping the insurance money. And if it does just remember me and my fellow conspiracy theorist @dana-duchovny told you first ;)

you seem like a Proper Adult, so I (<-about to start college) was wondering if you have any advice for figuring out what job(s) would be a good fit? Of course, interests are fluid and plenty of people change careers, but I’m hoping to avoid both poverty and Sisyphean torment, and all jobs I can think of are just… meh. For every pro there’s two cons sort of thing. Plus, I’m a trans guy, so I have to consider how progressive/conservative a job’s culture will be.

This is incredibly difficult to answer, because wow, do my stock answers ("get tech-savvy", "work in government") fall flat right now, due to how volatile the world is. There will be folks who will tell you to invest your skills in trades like HVAC, but honestly, there doesn't seem to be an easy answer right now.

I've career/industry hopped a few times and am considering another hop. Here's the questions I've been asking myself:

What is my competition for this job? How much of it is other people vs being rendered obsolete by off-shoring/tech?

How much of the job is working independently vs with other people?

What is required for advancement? What is the balance of people-management vs subject matter expertise? What is the upper limit for my ideal career ladder and how far do I want to climb?

What are the physical constraints? Limits on my body? Limits to where I can live? Can I work remote?

How does the career play into my strengths? My weaknesses?

What is the work/life balance?

What is the money/personal fulfillment balance?

What new skills do I need to learn in order to succeed? How long will that take, and how much money?

What are my moral and ethical lines for this job/industry?

Since you're just getting started, I'd start digging into subjects you're interested in and really cast your net wide to learn about as many careers within that subject as possible.

School can easily silo you into The One Stereotypical Career choice. For example, I went to school for oboe performance, and was only really trained to be an orchestral performer. When I should have been taught other options, like session recording, managing a studio, being a contractor for other musicians, etc.

So, really just be curious. You can hunt around for jobs on LinkedIn to get an idea of what's out there. But it's also worth following and reaching out to professionals (hooray for social media) and seeing if any would be willing to tell you the pros and cons of their work and how they got their job.

A federal judge on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction that prevents the U.S. Department of Labor from requiring government contractors and grant recipients to certify they do not operate any diversity, equity and inclusion programs that run afoul of anti-discrimination laws until further order from the court. Judge Matthew Kennelly of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued the ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by Chicago Women in Trades, a nonprofit dedicated to training and retaining women in skilled construction trades that receives several grants from the Department of Labor. The certification provision is a key part of President Donald Trump’s executive orders aimed at curbing DEI programs because contractors and grant recipients could be subjected to crippling financial penalties under the False Claims Act if they are found in violation of it. The lawsuit filed by Chicago Women in Trades argued that Trump’s executive orders infringe on First Amendment Rights and are so broad and vague in their definition of what might constitute illegal DEI as to make compliance impossible.

Finally unveiling my Yugioh au!

This took so long to conceptualize…

The au would have a ritual focus considering how closely it’s tied to the demonic. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a good ritual for Clara. Hopefully one will be released. It’s taking place is a legacy-esque Duel Monsters universe. In Yugioh speak I mean if Arc V had a universe with the original characters this would be it. So there’s some newer cards but it’s still trying to keep a lower power level. This is why the banlist is nonexistent because it was nonexistent in DM.

Anyway, Ritual Dimension! I have been deliberating on this for quite awhile. Similar to how things go on Arc V dimensions everything is based on the series in question but loosely with legacy characters being included. As for the legacy character picks it’s got to be Kaiba and Joey for the main ones but others will appear (Like Pegasus and Marik). I’ve been debating on whether to include Yugi and decided yeah he’s not included (mostly to follow the format). This changes a few things that I will get onto in future posts.

The actual plot idea: Without the existence of Atem in this timeline the Shadow Games simply become secret. This has gotten to the point where the Spirit World and human world become extremely close which leads to much more encounters and incidents which most don’t believe. The spells used to summon monsters have been preserved and abused into the modern era. Pegasus stumbles upon this when witnessing such magic in a party which leads to him investigating the Egyptian magic which leads to the creation of duel monsters. The monsters themselves seem much more alive and tangible when summoned even without Real Solid Vision. Most people don’t know exactly why but every card has some of this magic bound to it.

The story starts with little Iruma suffering because his parents are the worst and he suddenly gets an offer to work for Industrial Illusions. He’s helped them a few times as a contractor but is pretty surprised by the sudden offer. He ends up working at the Duelist Kingdom tournament as a player hunter. Here mainly he meets Azz.

Iruma finds his boss rather strange but goes along with it as he tends to. Pegasus seems fond of him and likes spoiling him which is either because he’s extremely adorable or his most competent employee. He does also notice him investigating something. Shortly after the tournament Iruma is tasked with investigating what’s going on with the rare hunters at Battle City. Pegasus decides that he must do this through infiltrating them This scares poor Iruma quite a lot as he has to pretend like he’s totally on the side of the crazed mind controlling maniac known as Marik to succeed in his job and not die. He’s not sure how he ended up in this situation (he couldn’t say no) and at this point he’s too afraid to ask. Meanwhile his parents are off gambling and drinking with the money their son earned from spying on a cult.

Many major arcs involve him investigating something going on for Pegasus using his card game and survival skills.

Onto the decks!

Iruma’s is focused on cheating out mostly low leveled rituals with Advanced Ritual Art. This powers up the final boss of his deck which is Garesglasser because the normal monsters all have different attributes. By the time they’re spent on the ritual spells the boss will be fully powered up. He can also power up his lower leveled Rituals with Ritual Weapon which instantly makes them huge. With Trade-In he can trade a brick in his hand for more cards. I made sure to give him a few boss monsters so that he can have a functioning deck that isn’t too samey in each duel. (For anyone who will inevitably ask I do know that Batos is a tuner shhh.) Clavikys is also Yugioh’s Solomon so of course he’s Iruma’s main card. I also find his ace being so unassuming to be fitting. With this information it should be pretty obvious which card Ali will be. If you know you know.

Azz’s is extremely aggressive with it constantly blowing up everything in play until the enemy is defeated. All of the constant aggression is definitely very Azz🤣.

Nephthys keeps arising again and again after every defeat until it wins. Also interestingly it has a blue flame upgrade which is pretty perfect. The Ritual form being treated as an evolution. I chose to focus on the fire and aggression mostly with the deck. Unfortunately I couldn’t fit reptiles in there. I was thinking that I might include Blaster later on to rectify this. Currently it’s way too strong to include. His deck was by far the easiest to handle.

I don’t think any archetype fits her more than Performapal (and Frightfur for Evil Clara). There was NO way I wasn’t going to give her Smile World. It is so perfect for her. This deck can stall to burn you out with Bowhopper or you can be subject to Sky Magician quickly snowballing from all the spells she’s activating. Her traps are ones (besides Mirror Force) that are supposed to be related to the games she plays. I’m giving her this with the hope that Sky Magician and the non-pendulum Performapals will get more support for future arcs. Worst case scenario I might have to use the O word or make a card.

These cards in their bases are the aces with them all getting their respective evolutions. (If a new Sky Magician is not a ritual I will just end up making one if the time comes.)

These are all their early decks with me keeping cards that they get later secret for now. One thing I will reveal is that Iruma will get Eater of Millions at some point.

As time goes on and I increasingly start to lose my sanity the more dropping out of college and wildly switching gears to go to trade school to become a general contractor sounds like a good idea but also I have so much internalized guilt about the thought of not getting a degree.

My parents had me touring Ivy Leagues since I was 12... All my life I've been under the expectation that I would be putting every single ounce of my soul into education and finishing school with at least a graduate degree from a respectable university. Everyone around me drilled that into me constantly, my family, my teachers, my friends.

"Be a skilled white collar professional or die" may as well be the motto of Silicon Valley schools.

So now I'm at that crossroads, and as bullshit as I know that conditioning is, deviating from that path still feels... like dying, like it's not that different from different from battling my suicidal ideation. Like I'm burning my future, my potential, my entire self away just because it's slightly difficult right now...

And that's bullshit, I know it's bullshit. But I'm suffocating in it anyways.

I'm intelligent to do just about anything... but I also lack the discipline to use that intelligence for just about anything...

I've always been bright, everyone has told me I'm headed somewhere great... I was good at it for so long... I graduated high school with an incredible amount of skills and knowledge and opportunity ahead of me...

But then I ran out of fear to fuel myself with and I haven't been the same since...

I try and I try to escape it but I'm still just some burnout loser stuck in community college... treading water in aimless circles...

I feel like I've always been built for these expectations. But nothing about this feels like living. I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. Someone else has always answered the question for me... and all I know now is that they were wrong.

I'm tired of being a mirror for other people's expectations. I'm tired of not even being allowed to fail.

I want agency.

I've never had anywhere near enough agency... ever. I don't feel in control of my own life. But I've been deprived of it for so long I feel as though I barely even know what to do with it.

I just know I need to escape this. Somehow, someway, or I will die. I know I can't survive this path, I don't fit into a 9-5. If I have to waste my life chained to a desk I will eat myself hollow with regret. There has to be more to this life than that. Than waiting for the weekend every week. So, when did the bottom start to fall out? It all started unraveling after the 2008 crash. A once-booming and very competitive field turned into a chaotic scramble for survival, and that’s when some very cutthroat underbidding and exploitation kicked into high gear.

The New York Times Magazine:

“It was alarming to start seeing that kind of activity on these jobs,” Whelan says. Everyone he knew in the business was struggling to find work, and the bidding wars drove the profits to new lows. Sometimes, when he learned the winning bid, he was stunned — he would have lost money at that price. The price of roofing work, in particular, plunged. BTW Construction used to work on a few roofs a year in the down time among their bigger jobs. But they could barely compete in the market after 2009. A job that he priced at $18,000 might be given to a company that charged only $10,000.

But make no mistake, this wasn’t just the market self-correcting—this was the start of contractors being priced out of their own trade by people who were breaking all the rules.

So how do these sketchy companies manage to make these extremely low bids and still stay in business? Well, it’s simple: they use illegal labor, skate past payroll taxes, and call full-time workers “independent contractors” to beat the system. The NYT Magazine piece goes on:

In 2021, the Center for American Progress estimated that 23 percent of constructor workers — and 32 percent of roofers — were undocumented. […] Beginning in the 1980s, but accelerating since the Great Recession, builders slashed costs by subcontracting out almost every facet of their projects. Subcontractors, in turn, were favored for delivering the work at a lower price, which they often accomplished by illegally misclassifying full-time employees as independent contractors or simply paying them off the books. These maneuvers allowed employers to dodge mandatory expenses, like payroll taxes and workers’ compensation insurance, and to evade liability for on-the-job injuries.

It’s a really easy recipe, folks. This is what happens when you mix cheap illegal labor with no enforcement and regulators who are on the take.

He comes from a fairly normal family. He is the oldest of two children, the younger brother currently specializing in physics. He is not on speaking terms with his family for various resons, such as dropping out of high school to pursue fighting, instead of gtoing to uni and becoming a lawyer like his parents wanted. He is quite the contrarian when he wants. The Karate instructor mentioned underground fighting when public fighting was becoming, in Shouji’s words, “too boring and too formal”. He is currently employed as a contractor by Yamashita Trading as a fighter for the Kengan Association. He has not yet been in an official tournament, but he has so far raked up 10 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws. BTW he likes wearing shoes better, but he will take them off for matches. He absolutely is a weeb and will be found a lot of the times reading Jump.
