2001/2010 vs 2024
I’ve wanted to do a comparison again for a while! Then I found my first sketchbook… (gotta love the weird penguin drawing 🤣)
The penguin was the very first thing drawn in my very first sketchbook! That was a trip going through…

I am not in any way normal about these two, and I am not even gonna pretend that I am.

✨2015---->2022✨
Art from when I saw that #SkillNotTalent tag and it encouraged me to look back through old stuff, cringe, then decided to re-do it 7 years later lolol
I'd say I made younger me proud 💕

By the way, there is such a thing... In 2016, I thought that I would always draw only sketch graphics without color :)

Art is a learned skill, not a born talent. It does take a certain combo of interest, stubbornness, dedication, and desire to become skilled- just like any craft. I’m sharing 2 pieces from my early teenage years (13 and 15) compared to work I’m doing now in my 30s professionally. It didn’t manifest out of nowhere. I am not some being gifted with sorcery. I’m not rich and swimming with money. I’m doing my best to make ends meet with a craft that is my passion and obsession.
Making art more accessible to all is making resources more available for us to discover. I didn’t have access to a tablet or drawing program til I was 17, which is why most of my work pre 2007 is in color pencil, because that’s all I had access to. Regardless of what’s happening out there, remember that artificial intelligence is limited by what it can source. It does not experience trauma like we do. It does not experience joy or love or sadness. It does not experience the way a diverse body of humans do.
Keep creating. Keep learning. Be patient and kind to yourself.

#skillnottalent is floating around twitter at the moment, so here is my contribution! my first drawing on the interwebs (2009) vs my ember redesign (2022) 🥺💞 art is a skill born from the labor of love also here is my little spiel about how the process of making art is special to me;
Even now this Ember design is a few months old and I can see improvements that I could make. We never stop learning and growing as artists, and I find that process incredibly rewarding. Being an artist has taught me so much about myself and connected me with a beautiful community.
In relation to AI art, and how some people think artists are "gatekeeping" art by shunning "AI art"; The real value of art never came from the final product, it comes from the journey and self-expression. The ability to visualize human thought is beautiful, regardless of skill level. AI can make pretty pictures, but it can't replicate the joy that comes from the human creation. To use AI to make "art" is to dismiss the purpose of artwork. The soul and process behind the creation are what makes art special and meaningful. Anyone can create art!
I know this is a little silly in relation to Ember fanart, but humans are silly! Let's embrace the weirdness of being here on this planet and draw funny little dragons together. Let's have fun! 💕

I think it's a great opportunity to talk about "talent"
So the thing is, there's no such thing as "talent".
There are people with better developed left or right brains, but it affects more aspects of our personalities than just our skill in drawing. And just because you have left brain better doesn't mean you can't make pretty art. Because in reality, the only thing that matters is PRACTICE and HARD WORK.
And these are my drawings from 2016 and 2023, after 3 years of studying anatomy and still life :)

Studying basics is hard and boring, I know, but it brings effects! So to all the artists that think about themselves as "talentless" - I've got good news for you, lol.
I hope I could motivate somebody with it 💚

2013(?) - 2022
I love painting this time of day (probably a little too much), and so I remade a piece from 2013 or so with that added, and I'm very please with how it turned out! 💙❄
(Forgive the horrific graininess of the older image, it's been compressed to hell and back - the details are bad, so think of this as a saving grace lol 😭)

2013 vs 2022
What’s crazy to me is that the first pic is AFTER 4 years of art school. Just goes to show the only person you can compare your art too is yourself. :)
