English Dub voice actress Rachael Lillis has passed away on August 10, 2024 at the age of 55 due to breast cancer.

Lillis is best known as the original English Dub voice actress of Misty, Jessie, and various pokémon such as Jigglypuff and Goldeen in the Pokémon anime. Her other well-known English dub roles include Utena Tenjō in Revolutionary Girl Utena, Martina in Slayers Next, Micott Bartsch in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Nagi Kirima in Boogiepop Phantom, Yuriko Star in The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Kanaka Ohno in Genshiken, and Ami Kurimoto in DNA².

Summary: The first time Gaav incarnated as a human.

It was Valgaav who found him, the first time. Ten years after the end of the war, sitting on a hilltop, tending to a flock of sheep.

The little village below the hill was peaceful and calm, and had been far, far from the epicenter of the war. The swords in town all sat rusting, or on the mantelpiece.

The young boy sitting on the hill, watching his father's sheep, had never known war, or strife. 

But he had never known peace, either. Something at the very core of his being kept it from him - gnawing away at him from inside, forever restless.

It was rare that the village got any visitors at all - which was why it was strange when the man in the hooded cloak approached him on the hillside, sheep running in a strange panic from him as he ascended the hill.

The boy cocked his head, looking the man over. "Are you lost?"

Despite the question, there was hesitation in his voice. Like he was still trying to assess what he thought of the man.

The man knelt before him, looking him firmly in the eyes. He was severe featured - slash-like markings rising from his cheeks and framed by the bangs of sharply cut pale blue-green hair. But it was his eyes that were most striking of all, a striking yellow, and slitted like a cat's. 

"I have been," he said, his voice a low murmur, "but I think I'll have found my way soon."

There was something about his eyes that the boy couldn't look away from, drawn back into them again and again. He felt a cold chill run down the back of his neck, and something in him said that he should run away, or scream. That something terrible was about to happen.

But another, bigger, older part of him quieted that fear with an enormous swell of joy, and pride. The boy didn't understand either of those feelings.

"Have we met before?"

"In a fashion. You could say I know you better than anyone," said the man - a soldier, wasn't he? He had a strong body under the cloak, and the eyes of a killer. "We were separated, but I've been looking for you."

A soldier. His soldier. Rescued from the ashes of not just a battlefield, but a massacre. The boy didn't know how he knew it, but he knew it, with an unshakable certainty.

Hesitantly, he reached out his hand. "I know you... I feel like I remember you."

The man took his hand, sharp, fang filled smile inching along his face "you do? Do you remember my name? I remember yours - your true name."

A kind of thrill went through him, like fire, and every bit of his human instinct was screaming at him to run, run fast, run far, that it would never be far enough.

He didn't run. His fingers tingled on the man's. 

"My name. I gave part of it to you, so you've been keeping it for me." The words spilled from his lips unbidden. "Tell it to me."

The man's fingers tightened against his, grabbing his hand firmly as his smile grew wider. As the hood shifted on his head, the horn rising from his forehead was all too visible as he nodded once.

"Of course, my lord," he shivered, tensing with a mad look in his eyes before he spoke the name with reverence "Gaav. Chaos Dragon Gaav."

The screaming human instinct in him was smothered into silence, and there was a sensation like held breath being exhaled.

All at once.

It came rushing into him all at once. His memory. His experience. His ego. And with it, all of his power as a mazoku.

Chaos Dragon Gaav.

There was no little shepherd boy on the hilltop.

There was Chaos Dragon Gaav.

Vaalgaav watched as the human body that contained the spirit of his exiled Lord shuddered under the sudden weight of memory. His form flickered and flared as his power returned - appearing for an instant in his true form. That enormous, towering, multi-headed demon dragon.

If he wasn't already kneeling before him he'd be brought to his knees by the sheer power, the sheer reverence, for the massive dragon twisting towards the sky. 

Devotion - long held and all consuming - filled his astral form as he clutched his hands tight. He'd sworn that he'd find Gaav, no matter how he'd reincarnated. He'd sworn that he would never, never let him languish without knowing who he truly was. 

Just like Gaav had saved him, it was time to repay the favor. And here and now, as his form filled the sky above town that knew no war - he knew he'd done well.

The power enveloped, and almost overwhelmed him for a moment, reminiscent of the day that Gaav had taken him and remade him. It was choking, infusing - but it was over in a second.

The silhouette of the great demon dragon clung in the air for a moment like an after-image, but it faded back to the astral plane. The boy was gone, too. What was left was the Lord Gaav that Valgaav remembered - tall, and broad, and strong, with long, sharp face, and a cascade of scarlet hair.

Gaav looked at his hands for a moment, and then put his palms gently on top of Valgaav's head.

The whole world settled back into place for him. The weight of Gaav's hands resting on his head - the familiar face looking down at him - the power hanging in the astral plane.

Valgaav leaned against the touch with a desperate smile "Welcome back, Lord Gaav..."

"My Valgaav," his deep, grumbling voice purred. "You found me."

The mazoku lord leaned down, and placed a kiss on the tip of his minion's horn, like a little boy had once kissed the heads of the sheep he looked after.
