another reason why i like 92sies more than livesies is because of how it’s the most realistic (out of the two, it’s very unrealistic but to an extent, same thing with it being realistic).

sure, you can argue that the whole story has been glorified and disney-fied through every adaptation, but livesies is more of a victim to “disneyfication”.

disneyfication (in my terms because it’s not an actual word) is where disney glorifies actual stories, therefore morphing them to be way greater than what they seem or less gruesome, e.g pocahontas, sleeping beauty, and snow white.

in livesies, it’s more energetic and kid friendly while on the other hand, 92sies seems to be a bit realistic with minor curses and teenage-like voices rather than broadway ones.

one of the flaws of 92sies i’d like to point out though, is how they portrayed the refuge. crutchie seems fine. in fact, he looks cleaner than the other newsies busking the streets, while livesies portrays the refuge in a darker light, showing the neglect of it all. although both versions share the same flaw of brushing it under the carpet.

in addition, we have to take in the fact that they’re children. children who weren’t performing for an audience, but were fighting just for the right to survive. it’s not just some highly manufactured broadway musical that just so happened to be real.

along with livesies glossing over nearly everything, they butchered david’s character into “me strict me smort” to create a new character [katherine (but it’s not like katherine shouldn’t exist, she’s a better character than denton but we shouldn’t sacrifice one character over the other. also jack kelly has two hands, so—)], and livesies changed santa fe for the dramatic effect (i’ll explain this in another post).

The eighth episode opens with Akin, who puts Johnny in line, and he is not the only one... Even our angel has a secret move against him. The fact remains that I love Peanut, and he has done a great job on the character. But something moves in the shadows.

We officially introduced Naru. We had already met him, but let’s see who takes the side. We already know that he is a big fan of Johnny, but despite this, he pretends not to know the name, as Jin taught him.

Akin sees Naru and remembers the times when he wore an outfit similar to him. Big mistake Akin...

And here is our angel in action. Get Naru’s outfit and rent a school set. Akin has no escape, especially for the story of what if that Jin tells...

The class scene is very iconic but... a shadow moves in the background. Unusual things happen to Akin until a strange meeting with a fan...

I am really happy that the class scene is very similar to the manga. Instead, I am sad that the paparazzi character has been replaced. I understand the choice about fan but I’m not comfortable with this change of plot...

I would like to point out the beauty of the photos that the fan brings to Akin. I know it is a bad moment in history, but I miss the paparazzo. He was a professional photographer...

Akin is destroyed, and for this change of plot, we see Jin supporting him and being close to him. It’s not yet time for the great drama then... I found the relationship between Akin and the fan instructive. You can see that it was a topic they wanted to talk about. Let’s hope the message has passed.

Jade is a different character from Kazumi Usaka. Unlike the manga, he is partial to Akin, and I like that very much. Jade solves situations. He warns us of the imminent danger for the next installment but is already ready to what may happen. I really like how Toey built the character. I think he's very important in this drama.

And then finally the prize. I’m really glad they kept the cake scene for the nervous one. Akin is so Takato in this scene. " Am I your number one?" What an exciting scene!

Things are starting to differ enough from the plot I know. There are still the iconic scenes, but you have to leave aside Takato and Junta and focus only on the story between Akin and Jin. It’s useless, they are different characters, and the drama supports itself well. Let’s take it as freely inspired.

I’m sad it’s not faithful, but it’s still a fun drama that works. It deserves all the success it is getting.

And in the next one there should be the ring... I can’t wait...
