From pharmaceuticals and food products to cosmetics and chemicals, sachet machines are trusted across industries for their speed, hygiene, and packaging consistency.
What Is a Sachet Machine?
A Sachet Machine is an automated packaging device designed to create small, sealed packets—commonly known as sachets. These packets are typically four-side or three-side sealed and can be filled with a variety of substances, including:
Powders (e.g. instant coffee, protein mix)
Liquids (e.g. sauces, oils, serums)
Granules (e.g. sugar, salt)
Creams and gels (e.g. lotions, ointments)
Sachet machines can be vertical or horizontal form-fill-seal systems depending on product type and production requirements.
Types of Sachet Machines
Vertical Sachet Machine (VFFS) Ideal for powder, granules, and liquid filling. Takes up less floor space and is highly efficient.
Horizontal Sachet Machine Better suited for fragile or sticky products like creams or sauces.
Multi-lane Sachet Machine Used for high-speed, high-volume production. Can produce multiple sachets simultaneously.
Stick Pack vs. Flat Sachet Machines While stick pack machines create narrow, tube-like packets, Flat Sachet Machine produce square or rectangular packets sealed on all sides.

Craft Brew Packaging Tips!

In an industry experiencing explosive growth, how does your craft brew stand out? Taste! Yes, that’s the obvious answer but consumers will only take a swig if you catch their eye, so the rest of the answer is packaging. When it comes to choosing the label printer for your craft beer bottles and cans, there are a few factors to consider. Most importantly, the label must reflect the quality and taste of the beer inside. In such a competitive landscape we’ve pulled together our top 6 tips to help your brand gain attention!
1. Bulk Pricing - Most any product consumer’s purchase offers a discount for large quantities. Flexible Pack’s craft beer labels and shrink sleeves are no exception. When you purchase in large quantities you can save on prep charges and setting up printing equipment. That segues right into tip #2!
2. The Brewer’s Collaborative Program - Flexible Pack understands the collaborative spirit of the craft brewing community, particularly given these times of uncertainty. The program celebrates the craft brewing community and provides brewers an opportunity to combine label orders. This creates a win-win with both a better price point and fast delivery! After all, you need a superior label for your superior brew! The program is simple. Small orders can be combined among more than one brewery or, one brewer can group multiple versions together to hit the minimum quantity order. For more information on this program please Read More.
3. Less is more… that’s right, minimalist beer labels must be eye catching and attractive but should never overshadow what’s inside. Research shows that clean, sleek designs tend to grab the drinker’s attention. Moreover, we recommend listing flavor profiles instead of specific ingredients. That way, if you’re unable to get the exact same ingredients for a future batch, your labels will still be applicable and that is smart because it’s economical!
4. Take advantage of the latest in digital printing technology. In the “battle of the shelf,” who would guess that printing equipment – the 6800 HP Indigo digital press, to be exact – would be your best weapon? Well, take your battle station and buckle in. This breakthrough technology offers exceptionally vibrant color, which directly translates to shelf appeal. Plus, this new digital printing press reduces the need for setup time, so you get light-speed turnaround on short and long runs.
5. Don’t underestimate the appeal of shrink sleeves. Labels are a fantastic choice for your craft brew but they’re not your only option. With 360-degree graphics, shrink sleeves offer more “real estate” to grab attention and enhance shelf appeal. This practical packaging solution for beer cans and beer bottles is vibrant, engaging, and offers plenty of room to tell your brand story.
6. Mosaic technology - Hold on tight to your pint! Here’s a crazy, amazing way to let your creative juices flow – and dazzle consumers! With Mosaic: The Unlimited Design Generator you get a 100% unique design on every single beer can label, beer bottle label, hang tag, keg collar, keg wrap, and shrink sleeve. Here’s how it works: Select or create one “seed” design. We’ll convert your initial design into an unlimited number of different designs. Every version is created from that “seed” – you can get thousands of designs and each one is unique! Remember, consumers love to collect one-of-a-kind items, especially if it’s their favorite libation!
Contact us to see how our innovative craft beer packaging solutions can help to sell your innovative beer products. We work with microbreweries and macro breweries on any size run, small or large (including quick-turn projects) to create an eye-catching design and compelling package. Together, let’s promote YOUR brand story!

POUCH PACKAGING MACHINES
Around the world and across industries, Automatic pouch-filling machines are becoming increasingly popular for industrial packaging. Pouches are flexible, lightweight bags that offer many advantages over traditional packagings such as metal cans or glass bottles.
Pouch-filling machines are typical of two types: Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) and Horizontal Form Fill Seal (HFFS), with FFS being the preferred technology.
Let's see how FFS packaging machines work.
The vertical seal filling machine is a kind of vertical structure bag-making and filling machine. Mainly used for industrial packaging and processing, it provides a more convenient and efficient automatic packaging method, saving time, material waste, and cost.
Understanding the main components of a VFFS pouch-filling machine will explain how these machines work:
Film take-up system: This system consists of an unwinding roller and a tensioner. The film roll (usually laminated PE, PET, or aluminum foil) is placed on the unwinding roller, usually located at the back of the machine. Using servomotors and a tensioner, the film is tightly and precisely unrolled and pulled into the system.
Printer (optional): The film goes through a printer where the date, batch code, etc. will be printed on the film.
Pouch Former: After printing, the film is moved to form the pouch. The process overlaps the edges of the film and shapes the bag. Vertical and bottom sealing is done with sealing jaws.
Filling and Sealing Machine: Filling is done by connecting the bagging machine to a multi-head weigher and other filling machines such as a screw or volumetric filler. The two machines are electronically synchronized so that once the bag is ready, the product is automatically inserted. Once the product falls into the bag, the top is sealed. Sealing jaws compress 2 pieces of overlapping material and weld them together, often by heating, to form a side or center seal.
Cutting off the bag: The filled and sealed bag is cut off. This top seal on the first bag becomes the bottom of the next bag and the process repeats. The cut bag falls into a collection system, typically a belt conveyor, which feeds the bag into the next packaging step.
Control box: There is a control box on the side of the vertical mold-filling machine. It contains all the electrical parts inside. PLC, contactor, servo motors, pneumatic cylinder, solenoid valves, PLC expansion mode, low-pressure electrical parts. The HMI facilitates the operation and control of the machine.
There are many bag-filling machine manufacturers that offer multiple machines for different applications. Whether you are looking for an oil pouch packing machine or looking for a reliable milk pouch packing machine manufacturer; whether you want to pack powder, liquid, viscous or granular products in flexible bags – smart pack is your best choice.
With four decades of worldwide experience, intensive in-house research and development, state-of-the-art manufacturing, technological ties with global majors, thousands of successful installations, and a strong nationwide service network - few bag-filling machine manufacturers can match the know-how, capabilities, and track record of Smartpack.

Pick to Light System
Put to Light Order Consolidation
Pick to Light Systems, fast, simple, and accurate technology increases picking speed and lowers labor costs in case and each order fulfillment operations.
Pick and Put to Light System benefits:
Easy to install
Simple to use
Minimal operator training
Fast and accurate compared to a paper or wireless terminal based picking process
Here’s a brief overview of how pick to light streamlines labor and increases order throughput.
Pick to Light order picking is essentially a network of displays called pick tags that mount on a rack or shelf channel and use an activity color indicator and alpha numeric display to direct the operator to pick locations. The pick tag displays the item and quantity required to pick. Pick to light, (PTL) is ideal for high density less than case each picking applications and typically uses either a cart or a gravity conveyor to start an order at the initial pick zone. The picking process is a pick and pass of the required items across one or several pick zones. Picking can be performed directly to the shipping carton or to a tote in carton flow racks or shelves with 50-100 different products located in a dense slotted pick zone. Several adjacent pick zones can be grouped together to support from 500 to 2,000 or more pick locations.
Pick to Light is significantly faster than paper picking, averaging 300-500 lines per man hour depending on item sizes. It is also more accurate than paper picking and wireless terminal based order picking. Paper picking is error-prone and requires secondary order checking for item verification at the packing process. This additional step adds duplicate touches and becomes a bottleneck in packing operations, reducing the order fulfillment productivity.
Pick to Light is simple to use and requires minimal operator training time, so even a temporary worker can be productive in under 30 minutes. This is an important factor for distribution center managers to consider if they have seasonal peak order volume periods. Another issue to consider when evaluating the use of Pick to Light is the capability of the software application managing the order picking operation.
There are several software packages to choose, including a simple configuration and execution application that maps the pick to light displays to the Warehouse Management System, (WMS) database locations. This type of application, many times referred to as pick execution, allows the WMS to control the pick displays at each location. The WMS executes the order picking strategy much like it controls a wireless terminal. The second option is a complete order fulfillment software automation module that provides a complete pick, pack, and ship order fulfillment operation for controlling the entire picking process. This application software can also manage inventory and material handling equipment such as order release, conveyor, divert, print and apply labeling applications, and order routing and sorting control applications found in a multi- zone, multi-level pick module distribution operations.
In pick modules, the order picking operation uses intelligent zone routing conveyor to transport order totes or cartons between each pick zone. Barcode scanners along the conveyor line scan the carton or tote order identification barcode to divert the container to the required pick zone. Pick-to-light operations in pick modules is best deployed in dense storage pick zones using a combination of pallet flow, carton flow, and walk-back shelving matched to the SKU velocity movement to minimize picking labor and reduce travel/walk time, taking wasted steps out of the order fulfillment operation.
The pick operator, “picker” at each zone uses a hands-free barcode ring scanner to further gain 5-10% in productivity rates. The barcode ring scanner keeps the operator working hands free and reduces the time to scan the carton barcode or capture a product lot or serial number during the picking operation. The barcode scan of the order identifier barcode is used to trigger the pick to light displays at each pick location, to energize the tag to display the location and quantity for the required order picks.
The operator performs the pick and acknowledges the completion of the item and quantity picked by pushing the color indicator button at each activated location. The picker walks in pick sequence order pushing the carton or tote along the gravity conveyor to each location. On completion of the last pick in a zone, a zone activity display can be used to display to the operator that the zone picking tasks are complete and the operator pushes the carton on to the powered transport conveyor. If the order requires additional picks in a downstream zone the tote or carton is diverted to the required pick zone.
When the picking is complete, the order tote or carton is transported to the packing area for completing the packing process; generating the pack sheet, adding void, taper sealing, and performing the shipping manifesting process.
Pick to Light System Packing Automation
Pick-to-light technology can also be deployed for order packing automation. It is well suited for directing value-add processes at an operator pack station. After picking is completed the order is transported on the conveyor system to the packing area. A pick to light shelf adjacent to the pack station can contain 20 or more shelf positions that have pre-printed document inserts, special label, promotional items or coupons. The operator scans the order barcode ID and the pick to light display or a series of the displays at each shelf is illuminated to direct the operator to insert the items required for the order. The operator then places each product in the carton, and presses the acknowledgement indicator button to confirm the pick and placement into the order carton.
Put to Light Wall Order Consolidation pick, pack, and ship efficiency
Distribution centers well suited to order zone picking are operations where a large percentage of their orders can be picked and completed within the originating pick zone are also well suited to a Put Wall Order Consolidation process. Orders that pick complete in each zone can be a picked to carton process directed using RF terminals, Pick to Light, or Pick by Voice. Any order that requires products from multiple zones are picked to a tote and directed to the Put Wall order consolidation area.
Put walls incorporated into the right order fulfillment application can reduce travel times across multiple zones and result in higher order fulfillment productivity with extremely high accuracy due to the secondary scan and put validation step. Put walls essentially work as a sort by light operation that directs the operator at the order consolidation area to scan an item’s barcode as it is removed from the tote and put the item on a shelf position based on the pick to light display color activity indicator button. As each item is scanned the display is energized to direct the placement of the item to a shelf order position and the operator acknowledges the action by pushing the display indicator button.
The operator continues to scan each item and place the items contained in the totes to each order shelf position and confirms the action using the pick to light display button. On the scan and put confirmation of the last order item, the display changes color and a second display on the opposite side of the wall (the pack side) is energized to alert an operator the order is complete and ready for packing. At packing, the operator is equipped with a hands-free wireless scanner and workstation flat panel display to direct the order pack and ship operation. Packing can be semi-automatic using a scale, a Zebra or Sato label printer, and pack sheet printer. The workstation display directs the operator on the carton size required to pack the order and generate the order packing sheet and carrier shipping label. Options are available to further streamline packing using and automated conveyor pack line with in-line scale, dimensioner, semi or automatic tapers, and print and apply label application of the shipping label or a combination pack slip/ship label which eliminates 40 seconds of labor in an automated manifesting operation.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with KC Holiday of QALO, a brand that makes silicone rings.I'm super excited about this interview, as it's the biggest one I've done (in terms of revenue and many other metrics). It's also packed with info, tips, and advice for others. Hope you enjoy. Some stats:Product: Silicone rings.Revenue/mo: $2.5MRevenue since inception: $100MEmail list: 1M+700k Facebook followers,193k on instagramStarted: March 2013Location: Santa Ana, CAFounders: 2Employees: 69EDIT: For those asking about verified revenue in the comments, here is their Inc. profileHello! Who are you and what are you working on?Hey there! My name is KC Holiday and I am the co-founder of QALO.We are a family-first company committed to designing and making products that enable families to share adventures and meaningful experiences—best known for being the creators of the functional wedding ring. We’ve created an enormous community of over 2 million people who wear QALO to represent the most important commitment they’ve made in their life. This year we as a company will eclipse over 100M in total revenue since Ted Baker (my co-founder) and I founded the company from a dining room table in 2013.What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?We are often asked the story of how we came up with the concept, and I wish I had some elaborate story about almost losing a finger, but my life isn’t dangerous enough for that. The simple answer is, we got married.Ted and I married our wives in 2012, a few months apart from one another. We were both living in Los Angeles pursuing a career in film and television, which really meant we spent a lot of our time working in a restaurant together.Ted and I had met in an acting class and became friends through the class. He managed to rescue me from my waiter job at PF Chang’s and bring me to the restaurant he managed in Beverly Hills. That restaurant is where the idea for QALO was created. In passing one day, we began discussing whether or not we wore wedding rings. I had been taking mine on and off constantly to play golf, workout, etc. and he said that he had just decided to not wear one because it was such a pain.We wanted to represent the commitment that we had made to our wives, but the metal ring just didn’t make sense with our lifestyle, and so we sought to create a solution for ourselves. We agreed to do it together and QALO was born.Neither of us had any background in manufacturing or building eCommerce websites, but that wasn’t going to stop us.We spent the next six months getting rings produced, creating all brand assets, and building a website. More on that below.None of them were anything close to perfect (they were actually pretty terrible), but we were way more concerned with determining whether or not this category was real than whether or not our logo utilized the most impactful font.Describe the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing the product. Most people see our product and the first thing they think is how simple it is. Five years ago, I would agree with them. Yes, the concept is simple, and the thought of manufacturing silicone rings seems easy enough, but we have transformed the jewelry industry. We’ve done that through an innovative focus on product evolution and sophistication in manufacturing. We approach manufacturers that have never created what we have conceived. That’s powerful.Initial design and prototypingThe initial design phase was relatively unique for ours because we were evolving a billion dollar industry with a proven design. If you are looking to disrupt a category don’t feel the need to revolutionize the space, assess what has been proven and reliable, and make some tweaks to improve it.For us, the design was created and proven through an actual wedding band, we were just looking to make it functional. That was what we were solving for. I had friends who had started a large silicone consumer good business and so I had some familiarity with its functionality. Once Ted and I spoke about choosing silicone as the material of choice, we went and purchased metal wedding bands with silhouettes we were fond of.Early design and prototyping mistakesThe next step should have been to get a CAD creator to create a rendering, and then go to a 3D printer to determine if we like it prior to shipping it overseas to be sampled, but we did know about that process when we started. I would do as much work as you possibly can on your design and functionality prior to sending it to your manufacturer. The lead times just become more expensive and extensive the less time you put in up front, and manufacturers want to mass produce your product, not run a hundred samples for you.We skipped that process and shipped the metal rings to a silicone manufacturer and asked him basically to create molds with those silhouettes and do his best to match the rings that we sent. It took about 3-6 months to get it to one we were proud of, even with our bar being as low as it was.Once we received that prototype, chose colors (again no science to that other than we felt neutral colors were safer and everybody just buys black) we felt good about it and moved to mass manufacturing of the product. What we did not account for was cheap molds make a cheap product. The quality control was terrible. Always pay a little extra for better quality. Losing one customer is worth way more than the extra you will pay to make sure the product is where you would like it to be.Finding our first manufacturerWhen we first started we went to the first manufacturer that would offer to help us, which was a recommendation from a friend. You’d be surprised the impact of just asking people in your own network can have when getting started. The quality control, however, was terrible. We would have to hand trim every single ring that we received with a pair of eyebrow scissors. I didn’t even know eyebrow scissors existed. I’ve probably hand trimmed about 50,000 QALO.If you bought in the early days I definitely hand-trimmed that ring while watching an episode of Lost. Our manufacturing has really scaled with us. We’re currently on our third manufacturer since the start of the company and our focus currently is on the differentiation of supply chain as we go global. We need to make sure we have created the supply chain to support the goals of the organization. Always make sure your goals aren’t bigger than your manufacturer’s capabilities. Our largest initial investment was in the initial inventory purchase. We emptied both our savings accounts to get that first batch of rings here. A tough decision for a couple of newlyweds, but we were just crazy enough to think it may work. Our design process todayOur design process is a combination of customer feedback, trend tracking, and a bunch of really smart creative people in our product department who know the silicone jewelry industry better than anyone in the world. Our proprietary Q2X material is a direct response to customer feedback. Silicone, which every company except our own, uses to make all of their rings is compromised when it comes in contact with certain liquids/solvents. If you’re someone who works with your hands all day, Q2X is the only ring that will work from you.Being the creators of the category gave us an opportunity to hear that feedback from customers early, and create a functional solution that gave them an opportunity to wear a ring 24/7.Describe the process of launching the online store/business.When we first started we had absolutely no idea how to start an eCommerce business. We ran a google search for a user-friendly platform and found Shopify. The most important thing is getting a functioning site that can give you the opportunity to sell the product. Great marketing will just make a bad product fail faster, so don’t worry so much about the bells and whistles, worry about creating a place to drive traffic to and learn about how consumers respond to your product.Initially, all of our investment dollars went to tooling to create the inventory, and the inventory itself. Ted and I emptied our savings to start it and never took on any funding. We shot our own content (first video which you can see here) and had a buddy wear the product and play sports so we could go take some lifestyle photos after I taught myself photography. I reached out to a friend’s dad who was a photographer for product, and he with a small light kit in his living room, took our product photos. The launchWe launched the site on March 1, 2013, and immediately began searching for proof of concept. We had solved a problem for ourselves, but did anyone else share the same frustration. We pursued viral communities that would have a use case for our product and began sending it out for free to influential people in the communities.Shamelessly, we sent emails and product to anyone we thought could prove the concept, as well as having an impact on a larger group. For us, those communities were military, firefighters, CrossFit athletes, and professional athletes.Working out of my dining room in the early daysThe best story through that process was sending the product to Andy Dalton who I had gone to college with. I reached out as he was a newlywed as well and asked if he’d be interested in wearing the product. He was open to it, and we sent it out. Fortunately, the Cincinnati Bengals were on HBO’s Hard Knocks that year and in an outlier type moment, they did a full segment on Andy wearing QALO in the first episode.Andy Dalton talking about our ringsIt was an epic moment.Get your product on people, you never know when moments like that will happen. When we saw the result in a Google search for ‘rubber wedding ring’ after that episode, we knew we had something real.Sweat equityThe biggest move we made in the early days was giving out sweat equity, which is basically a company or person exchanging services for equity instead of capital investment for equity. It played a huge role in us getting to where we’re at today. This was relevant to our business because we had absolutely no money when we started. We have never raised a dime of capital. Because of that we found people who were specialists and believed in our business. We didn’t have the money to pay them and so instead they were willing to help grow our business and no immediate pay, in exchange for a % of the business. Not everyone is set up to be able to do it because not everyone can work for free.Over time though the company made money, and we were able to pay them for their services as well. That was cool, they were owners and now the company they believed in was able to reward them with being able to pay for services. The sweat equity partners had expertise in:Ambassador relationships (ways to get the word out there)Digital marketingContent/Brand marketingLegalManufacturing knowledgeBusiness understanding of businesses relevant to our productSome early lessons in those days:Do your best to remove yourself emotionally from honest feedback. Take it and better your business with it.Your family doesn’t want to hurt your feelings when you pitch your idea or share your product. Pitch it to strangers too.Be very cautious about who you want to give equity too. Don’t just say yes because it’s a lot of money, pay attention to who the person is giving it to you.On the flip side, don’t obsess over equity. 100% ownership in something worth nothing is worthless. You don’t have to give all the sweat equity at once to partners. They can vest over a period of time based off of performance metrics.Smaller size bloggers and influencers are looking for content. Reach out to them and engage, they’ll be happy to write about you.Affiliate Marketing (Giving influencers kickback on a discount code they share to drive awareness) is way more work than worth. Stop doing it.If you are spending all day shipping, find someone else to do it for you so you can focus on create more shipments.Storing inventory in my living room.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?Ambassador relationships (ways to get the word out there)Our first big ambassador relationship who we paid was Shane Dorian, the professional big wave surfer.A few facts about that which can help when choosing ambassadors:Don’t pay people to wear/use your product.Make sure they align with your brand, they actually like it, then pay them for their time to create content or put a post up for you.If your product is good, they will use it organically, and consumers today value authenticity. Nothing seems more inauthentic than olympians advertising McDonald’s.Tell people about your winsFor every dollar you spend on an ambassador you should spend three times that amount to tell the world they are wearing it. We have the biggest ambassadors in the world wearing QALO, but our biggest challenge is telling the world that they are.Look for niche influencersFacebook and word of mouth are our two biggest forms of awareness growth. Small time influencers with a committed following can be very powerful. It doesn’t always need to be a superstar.Send your product out to people with no expectationsUnderstand the cost associated with doing it, but the more people that have your product the better.Make your packaging uniqueAthletes receive tons of products and packages. Make yours unique. An example of an on-brand influencer package we sent was when we sent a package to LeBron James when he moved to LA.Being based in LA, our team got together and created a recommendation of great family spots only locals would know about in LA, and gave him gift cards, maps, customized rings etc.LeBron doesn’t need gift cards or a map, but we valued his wife and kids as much as we did him. We focus on family. That is our brand.Digital marketingIn terms of digital marketing, we were launched by Facebook. In 2014, we realized Facebook was an incredible opportunity to pursue the communities that we had resonated with.We were a wedding ring, so the marital status was a huge helper to create efficiency in advertising. We work with an online sales agency named Common Thread Collective, and still do to this day. I would highly recommend them. There is no golden ticket in terms of what advertising channels will be best for your business so you may need to try a few.Understand which ads work and do your best to learn why. It may be a lifestyle image on Instagram, or a product photo on a white background on Facebook. There are people that can do some freelance digital advertising for you, and if you can self-learn some SEO, blog content on your site can be a great opportunity to create free SEO content and there are apps on Shopify that help with SEO.Do not get complacent online as you grow. Anyone can copy your product, set up a website and if they have money they can compete. It’s exactly what happened to our business with our competition, and it’s pay to play.Content/Brand marketingFor content marketing, we focus on telling our brand story through video content and photography focusing on product updates and releases, product education and customer testimonials. Define your brand message, tone, demographic, and create content that will resonate. The same rules apply for content and ambassadors. If you’re going to create video content, understand the distribution channel and how much you can spend. That video is worthless if no one watches it. For us, testimonial videos and short product focused brand videos have been valuable in our distribution channels. Different content should be produced with the end usage in mind. Pre-roll before a hulu ad, may be different than a facebook retargeting ad.Get reviews from customers. As many as possible. It is free content, and amazon has revolutionized the way people value them.Email marketing is a great way to boost revenue and deepen brand relationships. Collect as many emails as possible. Separate from a mailchimp fee and your time, it’s free. What are some of the metrics of the business? In 2018 we were, #151 on the INC500 List with 2,792% GrowthWe did $60,000 in our first year of business and 3.2M in our secondIn 2015, we went from 5 employees to 45 by year endOur email database is over 1,000,000 customersOur social media is a little over 700k on Facebook, 193k on instagramWe currently sit right around 70 employeesWe are in over 3,000 retail locations and our business is currently 60%/40% eCommerce to WholesaleWe will be launching in Target at the end of this year, and currently have distribution in Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lowe’s and REIAs the two founders we have the business split: I oversee Product, Marketing and eCommerce and Ted oversees Sales, Finance, Operations. We work together on the strategy part.We are currently expanding globally in EU and AsiaThere are over 1,000,000 searches for the silicone ring category on Amazon every monthThrough starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?I think it would be easier to bullet these out. We’ve seen the good the bad and the ugly.Nothing can replace hard work.People who got “lucky” often worked their ass off to create that luck.Rome wasn’t built in a day.Keep grinding, look at the Starbucks and Apple timelines of success if you think it’s supposed to happen faster. There is a Bill Gates quote that says, “People over overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in ten.” It is very easy to get discouraged by a company moving slowly but keep at it.You never know when someone may end up on an HBO show talking about your product. Outlier moments happen for everyone. You are so passionate about your company, you want the world to know. It just doesn’t happen overnight. Have a long-term vision, and set short-term goals. If you are hitting those goals, that’s a win. Celebrate the wins. Entrepreneurs are so hard on ourselves, give yourself some grace.Partnerships are a marriage without the sex.Forgive the metaphor. Which means it is a ton of communication, confrontation, and time spent together. They are very hard, but they are not impossible.Understand if you have a partnership, the work that is required to be successful. You will be working on your business as well as your relationship with your business partner. Find someone who compliments what you do, thinks differently and doesn’t want to do what you do.Your business doesn’t need two founders who are doing the same thing.Stay true to why you started the company. For every company that is started, there is a “why” you started, and that will be tested as you grow. Why do you exist? QALO started with the goal of allowing people to represent the commitment they had made to their spouse and family regardless of their occupation, hobbies or passion. We were always about building a community of people who live life a certain way, and at the end of the day prioritize, above all else, who it is they come home to.This has been our north star. We said no to Shark Tank multiple times as a group because we didn’t feel it was the right move for what we were trying to do. We agreed to not do any form of sports or university licensing because we felt it detracted from the meaning behind our product and why people wear it.Your “why” may force you to say no to what seem like great revenue opportunities and it will serve as a great filter, which is why you should never forget it. It will also help you stay true to yourself.Never forget your “why”. Customers will notice when you do.Be generous.Always. Becoming more successful will not make you more generous, that needs to be deeply rooted in you when you have nothing.Keep customer service in-houseWe have always had customer service controlled in-house. We use external services now as we’ve grown, but I think it is vital to feel relatable and give customers the employee to talk to a human who can help them solve that problem.Give your customers the customer service experience you would like to receive if you were the one on the other side of the phone. We call our customer service problem solvers because far too often customer service becomes part of the problem, not the solution. What platform/tools do you use for your business?ShopifyShipstationZaius - CRMMailChimp we used in the earlier days of emailSlackYotpo for reviewsZendesk for Customer ServiceGrowQuickbooks OnlineWhat have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?Books:The Power of HabitScaling Up (Better for once you are a few years in)The Lean StartupSmall GiantsEntreleadershipEgo is the EnemyLet My People Go SurfingPodcasts:Tim FerrissShopify Masters (My Episode)Building a Story Brand with Donald MillerFinding Mastery with Michael GervaisAdvice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?Go for it. Most devices in the world are connected. You can login to Netflix on your smartphone, watch an episode of The Walking Dead, switch to your smart TV the next day and pick up right where you left off. You might book a flight, check in and store an electronic version of your boarding pass in your mobile wallet which is updated in real-time by the airline to let you know when your gate has been announced (or, more likely, when your flight has been delayed). This past weekend I smugly managed to beat the ten-deep bar queue at my local Wetherspoon by ordering from my table using an app and funds from my PayPal account - a minor victory that exemplifies how digital threads are changing how we operate.
In the context of additive manufacturing (AM), a supposedly smart, automated manufacturing technology, that level of connectivity is not quite there, yet. The design portion is digital, pre-processing software helps translate CAD files to a 3D printing format whilst retaining data. That data is passed on to the machine where the ideal print environment is selected, often without much user interference thanks to intelligent optimised print parameters. Once the print is finished you might perform some form of post-processing task such polishing or grinding but typically, that's where the digital thread ends. As Industry 4.0 promises smart industrial workflows consisting of digital twins, automated factory floors and cloud connectivity, how do we ensure that data-rich digital thread continues throughout the lifecycle of an AM part?
Boston-based 3D printing company, Rize may have a solution. The company launched its Rize One 3D printer back in 2016 offering multi-material printing capabilities for the desktop. At the Additive Manufacturing Users Group conference earlier this year, the company announced it was taking that technology a step further with something called Augmented Polymer Deposition (APD), combining extrusion and material jetting to bridge the virtual and real-world gap.
-The model is in a digital world as it moves from the CAD or design tool into the pre-processing software and then into the machine," Andy Kalambi, President and CEO of Rize Inc. told TCT at the launch. -But the moment the part gets printed on the machine, it's a physical part and there is no more digital element."
The idea is to allow engineers and designers to embed additional functionality into parts to eliminate risk of human error and common problems such as piracy. For example, engineers can use the Rize One's voxel-level capabilities to print a QR code into the part that can be scanned on a smartphone to provide digital information. This could be essential data about the part itself, how to assemble it or maybe even a code to view the part in a virtual reality environment.
-The moment you create a mediation, you are creating a possibility of error or risk. The QR code is just one example that we tried out and it was very successful," Kalambi added. -It enables AM and especially the physical part to be connected into that whole digital work stream which involves CAD, PLM, sometimes even IOT, all of that. It looks simple but it's very profound because it suddenly makes the part come alive."
The overall aim is create an -appliance user experience" which Kalambi likens to the way Uber has changed the way we travel. You're connected to a pool of local drivers with access to their profiles, you know when the car will show up and your receipts are stored handily in an app using a cashless system - the act of taking a taxi hasn't changed but the user experience has. Rize wants to do the same for 3D printing by having all of that information available as part of an inclusive and connected user experience which will ultimately save engineers time and energy when a part lands in their hands.
Founded primarily as a way of securing information for cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology is becoming increasingly relevant to industries and businesses that require protection and security for their digital assets. In a first for AM, LINK3D has introduced the integration of blockchain technology for AM in its flagship SaaS product, Digital Factory.
The AM software solutions company believes the need for file integrity and traceability is a priority for AM processes to ensure that the digital thread continues once a part is either sent from the designer or comes off the print bed.
-3D Printing enables digitisation of manufacturing, which has a lot of benefits," Vishal Singh LINK3D CTO told TCT. -This also introduces the challenges of the digital world, especially: security, IP protection, tampering of parts, and hacking of advanced manufacturing machines. Furthermore, the digital manufacturing supply chain enables on-demand and distributed manufacturing brings together several participating stakeholders. Digitisation creates security challenges, especially with stakeholders, so maintaining a secure and auditable digital thread for the 3D printing workflow is now more critical than ever."
LINK3D proposes the software will be particularly beneficial to service bureaux who will be able to receive orders based on their capabilities and pre-verified orders. Prints can be traced in real-time, logging data from machines which can be stored safely and accessed for traceability checks. Once the part is printed and shipped, the package can also be tracked to ensure it is opened by the intended recipient.
-It can be used for managing recalls and forensics, if something went wrong with some parts, the batch or lot number can be isolated and the root cause can be identified - be it be machine parameters or material details or some other details," Singh continues. -Beyond production, supply chain and logistics aspects also need to be tracked to ensure the parts are delivered to correct destinations in an untampered way."
LINK3D claims blockchain integration can help AM to become more accessible to designers, manufacturers and supply chain representatives as a necessary tool for validation and trust in a decentralised manufacturing ecosystem.
Singh adds: -Unifying the digital thread in 3D printing is a necessity to enable 100% replicability of printed parts."
Over in San Francisco, another software provider Identify3D is working to enable the digital thread by providing security, manufacturing repeatability and traceability throughout the digital manufacturing process.
At RAPID + TCT in April, Identify3D claimed it wants to become -the shipping container for digital manufacturing". What that means is, whilst everyone is familiar with the humble cargo box, unless you packed it or are the recipient, you have no idea what's inside. Identify3D thinks of secure zip files in a similar vain. They can be packed with part and manufacturing information but only users with a specified license will be able to access it.
-Identify3D has developed a software solution that protects engineering and design data using the highest encryption standards and a system of licensing to ensure only authorised parties have access to the data they need to produce parts under specific manufacturing rules," Stephan Thomas, Co-founder & CSO of Identify3D explained. -By enabling a secure digital thread that tracks the design, manufacturing, and deployment of parts along the digital supply chain, Identify3D provides customers with the exact knowledge of how, when, where, and by whom a part has been manufactured."
With its Trace capabilities, Identify3D keeps a log of all information as it moves through the supply chain. Design and engineering data is protected from the get-go and teams can manage who can access their manufacturing files and even how many times. This can provide information such as how the file is to be manufactured and once it becomes a physical entity, can be traced all the way to the end user to ensure IP control and authenticity.
-The digital thread is what connects the flow of data from conception through the production and maintenance of a part. This requires interoperability between the systems that transmit and manage design and manufacturing data, creating huge vulnerabilities for cyberattacks on digital interfaces," Thomas adds. -If the digital thread is not maintained or secured, it will compromise the integrity and traceability of the digital manufacturing flow resulting in increased risk of counterfeit, maliciously modified, poor quality, or uncertified parts from entering the physical supply chain."
Some of the biggest AM players are already on board with the likes of SLM Solutions, Renishaw and EOS partnering with the start-up and more are in development including several pilot deployments with Fortune 500 companies.
For most AM applications, the process does not end as soon as the part comes off the print bed. Parts require an element of post-processing but typically that means the digital link has already been broken when conventional finishing processes come in. AM post-processing solutions provider, PostProcess Technologies is looking to tackle that with its recently launched CONNECT3D software.
-Managing the life-cycle of subtractively manufactured parts is a well-established process. Additive manufactured parts have the opportunity and advantage to do so digitally and end-to-end," Marc Farfaglia, Engineering Manager at PostProcess. "Moving additive manufacturing from prototyping into a production atmosphere requires tried and true management of the entire process ... without it, continuous improvement is a guess and check game, and optimal operational and economic efficiencies cannot be achieved."
Linking this data can be critical to the entire workflow, effecting decisions early in the design process such as part orientation and placement of supports right through to the post-printing step. Building on the company's AUTOMAT3D software which enables intelligent removal of support materials, CONNECT3D is a cloud connected software that addresses the full manufacturing thread from design to post-processing, learning from itself along the way, to deliver more consistent, final parts using smart removal of support material and surface finishing.
The software enables users of PostProcess' hardware to leverage native CAD formats to automatically define the desired algorithms for post-printing in a range of metal and polymer materials.
Farfaglia added: -With the PostProcess CONNECT3D platform, the user can have all of the information carried with the part through the whole AM process through to the final post-print step, so that they can make informed decisions on what processes the part needs to go through to get the final desired end finish to be truly customer-ready."
Modern lives are intertwined by digital threads and whilst that constant exposure to data can have both positive and negative implications, for AM to fulfil its promise as an integral cog in the factories of the future, a strong digital thread will be key to its implementation. It's no longer just about having a machine in place and suddenly you're on the cutting edge. Rather, developments like this where manufacturers are examining the nitty gritty of everything else that happens around the print itself, will help users to get the most out of the technology from that initial idea all the way through to delivery.

Stockpile
Here’s something novel: inventory management software that is actually free! Every cent you can keep for your business is one you can invest elsewhere, so free is good.
If you have multiple locations for your retail business, Stockpile allows you to manage them all easily through one interface. You also can collect insights on inventory turnover through the reporting module. And you get unlimited users, items, and locations, and never pay for the privilege.
What does it cost? Did I mention it’s free? The company is constantly adding new features, and plans to include customer management modules and barcode scanning in the future. These features will be available as add-ons to Stockpile for a fee.
Cin7
If you’re looking for more places to sell your products online beyond your own website, Cin7 is a great inventory management platform to come along for the ride. Recently, the brand announced a new integration with the Walmart Marketplace. Similar to Amazon, the Walmart Marketplace allows sellers to have products appear on Walmart.com, helping you reach a larger audience.
Cin7’s strong suit is its integrations: there are 120 currently on the Cin7 Supply Chain App Store, where you can “click-and-connect” to online marketplaces, shipping services, sales and marketing platforms, and payments solutions.
Additionally, Cin7 offers:
The ability to create promotions and gift cards
Fully integrated point-of-sale and inventory management
Real-time tracking of sales and inventory
What does it cost? Cin7 is a bit pricier than other systems, starting at $249 a month, but with the robust features it offers, you might be able to avoid paying for other platforms that offer some of the services that Cin7 covers. Also, a free trial is available.
OrderBot
If fulfilling orders and shipping them out is time-consuming for your ecommerce business, OrderBot can help automate much of the process. From creating customizable packing slips to using barcodes to easily scan and process products, this inventory management platform takes the headache out of order fulfillment.
Your order fulfillment staff will be pleased with the ease that smart pack slips for optimal picking and packing provide, as well as having the ability to assemble work orders. You or your administrator can manage inventory at multiple warehouses, so as you grow, the software grows with you.
What does it cost? Because this software is so customizable, you have to request a demo to get a quote for your needs.
Wasp Inventory Management Software
When you don’t have your inventory management smoothed out, you can often have inventory write-offs if you buy too much inventory or don’t properly manage your stock. Wasp Inventory Management Software helps eliminate such write-offs by helping you get a handle on your inventory.
You’ll get alerts when inventory is low, expiring, or past-due, which helps you ensure you always have what you need in stock and that you move what needs to be sold asap.
And with more than 60 pre-built reports available in the system, you can get the insights you need to manage both inventory and suppliers. You can even streamline your relationships with vendors by inputting detailed supplier information and establishing a supplier code for each.
What does it cost? Rather than paying a monthly subscription fee, with Wasp you pay a one-time purchase price, starting at $1,495, which includes the software, inventory scanning device, and printer.
Whichever of these inventory management systems you choose, take advantage of the free trails to test them out. You want to be sure that it meets your specific needs to help you streamline and automate your cash flow and inventory management. If it does its job, you shouldn’t have wasted inventory and lost revenue.
