You asked: Is there a new Connecticut law that goes into effect regarding early parole for people who were under the age of 21 who got lengthy sentences ?
Yes, There is a new Connecticut law that expands parole eligibility for individuals who committed crimes before they turned 21. I am proud to my ACLU SmartJustice team and I advocated for this bill to get passed into law. The law, which went into effect on October 1, 2023, allows people who were under 21 at the time of their offense to be eligible for parole after serving a certain portion of…

In June 2002, Brian Mitchell held Elizabeth Smart at knife point in her home in Salt Lake City,Utah. Mary Katherine, her sister was also in the bedroom but pretended to be sleeping and later alerted the parents a couple hours later when Mitchell left the household. Next, he took her to woods outside Salt Lake where he then performed a fake ceremony to marry him and Elizabeth. He then proceeded to rape her and keep her from escaping by chaining her to a tree and had to take on a whole new name: Esther. The cruelty does not end there he continued to rape her, feed her garbage, make her drink alcohol and threatened to kill her many times a day. In addition, they relocated to San Diego and many counties around the area throughout her kidnapping. The weirdest part of this case to me is that Elizabeth was in public many times with her perpetrator and people failed to recognize her despite her being in the media. Not long after, Smart’s sister realized the perpetrator was someone who had worked on there roof once for the family and went by Emmanuel. Smart and Mitchell were discovered not long after by two woman in Utah on March 12,2003 and Mitchell was arrested. Elizabeth then proceeded to speak about her experience and even wrote books on her experience. She also was the lead in bringing victims together to help Jayme Closs and do a Lifetime documentary on her case called,Smart Justice: The Jayme Closs Case. She did this to help Jayme by letting her know she is not alone and bringing awareness to victims. Elizabeth is very bold and inspiring I recommend everyone to watch the Documentary.

Did the law pass in CT saying Landlords can’t discriminate against people based on criminal records
Yes, I am proud to say I advocated for this bill with my Team at ACLU SmartJustice Leaders!! Connecticut passed a law that generally bans discrimination in the rental of housing based on a person’s criminal conviction status. The law, effective from October 1, 2024, prohibits housing providers from refusing to rent to someone solely because of their criminal record, with certain exceptions For…

Me and my colleagues, the Magnificent 7. We are the #SmartJustice Speakers Bureau#AnthonyGraves#TSU#ACLU#URRC. We were talking to our senators, representatives, and we're on the road to transform the way people view individuals who got caught. People who made mistakes paid their dues, deserve to live with dignity and respect. We did the time and now we are creating, implementing, strategically introducing new Bills. https://www.instagram.com/p/BtFX32AhTG8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=oee6sbkqc0oh

Prosecutors have used their power to pack jails and prisons. And it has taken decades, billions of dollars, and thousands of laws to turn the United States into the largest incarcerator in the world. But did you know that prosecutors also have the power to dismantle this machine — even without changing a single law? Prosecutors have the power to flood jails and prisons, ruin lives, and deepen racial disparities with the stroke of a pen. But they also have the discretion to do the opposite. This video explores the power of prosecutors to continue to drive mass incarceration — or end it. This video is part of a series, presented by the ACLU Campaign for Smart Justice and Brooklyn Defender Services, shows how prosecutors can single-handedly transform the broken American criminal justice system. The videos feature Deray McKesson (activist and Black Lives Matter founder), Nina Morrison (The Innocence Project), Baratunde Thurston (Author and Comedian), Adam Foss (a former prosecutor), Scott Hechinger (Brooklyn Defender Services), John Pfaff (professor and author of Locked In), Josie Duffy-Rice (Fair Punishment Project), and Brandon Buskey (ACLU). To sign up for ACLU action alerts on ending mass incarceration, text SMARTJUSTICE to 82623.
