The First Omen (2024): Clobbering the Audience on the Head
The 2024 prequel film The First Omen (2024) stands out for one reason only. It delights in clobbering the audience on the head. Suffering from the syndrome of not believing that the folks watching your film will “get it.” Arkasha Stevenson directs and co-writes this forerunner to the 1976, groundbreaking, horror offering The Omen. *”Groundbreaking” as it was released on 6 June 1976. Le Giornate del Cinema Muto 2023: Pordenone Post No 7
You don’t have to be superstitious to notice when the date is Friday the 13th, and conduct yourself cautiously as a result. And of course I am not superstitious – unless you count the fact that I am convinced I willed this evening’s gala into existence by the power of my mind. But that’s a story for later on… Continue reading Untitled

Lights Out L.A.

Season Three Episode Nine
Dr. Spencer Reid x Reader (Aaron Hotchner’s Sister)
Words: 5743
Series Masterlist
Summary: Working different cases in the same city, the reader and the team deal with rolling blackouts. While she interviews a killer, Spencer and the rest of the BAU go after the Prince of Darkness.
Notes: I’m not sticking to a strict timeline for this one, just kinda going with the flow of it. I love incorporating the season finales into these episodes! I promise, this season finale will be a little bit fluffier. This is pretty chaotic, but it’s kinda the vibe I was going for. Enjoy! (Also, sorry for missing yesterday, I was so distracted by Daredevil: Born Again that I totally spaced. Season finale next week!)
-
“Sorry Aaron.” You switched the phone to your other ear, holding it between your shoulder and your cheek as the guard checked your qualifications. “I was here first.”
“I know this study is important to you, but you can’t ignore that there is a killer out there.”
“Oh, brother.” You blew out a breath, shaking your head. The guard buzzed you through. “This is L.A. I’m sure there’s more than one.”
“You’re not helping your point.”
“I’m fully aware of the blackouts and what has been happening. But I’m perfectly safe.”
“Y/N.” He ran a hand down his face, leaning against his desk where his go-bag waited. “You’re conducting interviews with half a dozen female serial killers. Safe isn’t exactly the word I’d use.”
“Hey, I’m about to meet that woman who literally used black widows to kill her husbands.” You reached into your bag for your tape recorder. “I have to go. Sorry. I love you. Stay safe.”
Aaron grimaced, holding back a frustrated sigh. “Yeah, you too.”
You hung up.
Reid stood in his doorway.
“She’s staying in L.A.?”
Hotch gave him a solemn nod. “She’s staying in L.A.”
-
You watched the news the first night. Admitly, you didn’t really want to sleep. You weren’t sure if they’d landed yet, but a part of you wanted to call Spencer over just so he could hold you. But this guy was feeding off of the city’s fear and he wasn’t going to make a meal out of yours. You had scarier fish to fry.
The files sat before you on the table, the first two interviews of your stay completed. Female serial killers were rare and Sonia was trusting you. After everything, she was trusting you with the study you’d been working on from the beginning of your career. Why do women kill? More than that: why do they kill more than once?
You hoped to brush away myths of simple female hysteria or other nonsense perpetuated by men. You needed their stories- not out of sympathy, necessarily, but to understand how to maybe prevent something like this from happening.
Your phone buzzed with a text.
Just landed. Please stay safe. I’ll see you soon. Love, Spencer.
You smiled softly and replied.
You don’t have to sign off on texts. I know who you are.
After a few seconds, a response.
I know. But I always want to remind you that I love you.
Rolling your eyes, your thumbs moved.
Then just say that, silly.
Your phone rang. You answered.
“I love you,” Spencer said.
“Aren’t you supposed to be hunting a murderer?”
“I can do that and still love you.”
“You’re an idiot, Spencer Reid.”
Spence smiled. “Only for you.”
“Hey, loverboy, time to go,” Morgan called.
“Spence,” you said before he could hang up, “be careful.”
“I will.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too, Y/N. Bye.”
The rest of the team was already departing and the youngest of them rushed to catch up.
“So she’s still here?” Morgan asked, shaking his head. “Leave it to that woman to purposely stay in a city where a killer is hunting during mandated blackouts.”
“She’s dedicated,” Prentiss agreed. “I’ll give her that.”
“What’d she say about the haircut?” JJ asked, giving the youngest of the group a teasing smile.
“I bet she wanted him to cut that mop before the wedding.” Morgan rustled Reid’s hair, to which he grimaced away.
“Shut up,” he said, but had to bite his lip to keep from smiling.
Any amusement of the moment quickly faded when Hotch walked into the room.
More blackouts were on the way, which meant more bodies. They were running out of time.
-
“Thank you for your time, Miss Braker.” You turned off your recorder, feeling every movement of the woman across from you’s dark, watching eyes.
“How many of us do you have left, sweetheart?” She asked. Her pupils almost blended with her irises, giving her a wide, frightening gaze.
You kept a steady voice and gave her a small smile. “Just a few left and I will be on my way.”
“Are you talking to Mandy Owens?”
“I’m not at liberty to discuss the subjects of my research with you, Miss Braker.”
The woman leaned forward, her stringy brown hair falling into her face as she whispered. “She’s a loon. Killed all those kiddies from her daycare.”
You didn’t respond, instead, gathering up your things and thanking her again with a kind expression. But you couldn’t bring yourself to leave without saying it. “I know this doesn’t mean much now, Miss Braker, but,” you took a breath, “I am sorry for what happened to you.”
Betty Braker’s face changed. Her eyes almost looked normal again, dark blue. She chewed on her bottom lip, nodding quickly over and over again.
“Thanks,” she muttered.
You motioned for the guard to open the door.
-
It was hot. Not the fun, lounge at the beach, or run through the sprinklers kind, either. It was the exhausting, sweaty, hard-to-breathe-in kind that had you nearly panting at the window of the warden’s office.
“Sorry we couldn’t offer you anything more comfortable,” she said, handing you a glass of ice water. “The fan is the best I’ve got. Our AC has been busted for days. The women are getting restless.” A wrinkle of worry formed between her brows.
“You aren’t worried about a riot, are you?” You asked.
You definitely didn’t want to get caught in the middle of that.
She frowned. “I think you should hold off on the last interview.”
Blowing out a long breath, you took a drink, letting the cold water flow over your lips in much-needed relief.
“Are you sure?” You asked. You didn’t want to sound whiny, but you were so close to being done.
The warden shrugged and gave you a sympathetic glance, but you could tell she still didn’t understand. Not many people did.
Why try to get into the minds of psychopaths who are already locked up? What good would that do?
“Well, I really appreciate your time, ma’am.” You shook her hand and tried to hide your disappointment.
“I’ll give you a call once things have cooled off,” she said with a short chuckle. “Literally.”
On your way out to your car, feeling dejected and in need of a cold shower, your phone rang. A spark of frustration shot through you, but you calmed it.
“Director Strauss,” you answered. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Y/N,” her voice was hard, as it always was, but there was something else there too. Expectant. “You wrote a paper on the Night Stalker during your master’s, yes? It was published. Well respected.”
You opened your door, leaning on the metal frame. “Yes, I remember it. Why?”
She took a breath and you could practically see her expression.
Don’t let me down.
“I want you to consult the team on this case.”
Your mouth fell open like a fish on very, very dry land. The sun cooked over you, making your forehead sweat.
She continued. “I have contacted your supervisor and she said you’re in Los Angeles for a different study. If possible, I want you to look into this case of the home invasions.”
“I’m sorry, but-” The metal of your car door started to burn. You jerked your hand away. “Why?”
“The press are calling him the Prince of Darkness.” You could hear the jaw clench, the strain to keep herself from showing any emotion.
She’d told you that you would have made an excellent profiler once.
But you both knew, with your background…
“You would be doing me a favor,” she said.
Was this her way of making up for the interrogation she’d put you through after Haley died? What kind of life you had where consolation came in the form of a murder investigation.
You climbed into your car. “I’ll take a look at what they’ve got, but I doubt I’ll be able to add much.”
“Whatever you can, I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.” She cleared her throat. “I’ve already informed Agent Rossi you’re on your way.”
You scoffed and started the engine, reveling in the blast of air conditioning that hit you. Of course, she knew you’d say yes.
-
Between the traffic and the lack of lights in certain areas, it was dark by the time you reached the station.
And someone else was dead.
Rossi called while you were driving to tell you. He said Aaron knew. He wasn’t exactly happy, but it was better to have you at the station than at the prison. Spencer called right after, but you lost signal, driving through one of the dark spots.
Sitting there, waiting in the line of cars, without lights to guide you, still had you on edge when you walked into the station.
Spence found you first, breaking away from JJ to walk to you.
“Hey.” He kept his hands in his pockets, feeling the eyes of the other officers look at you curiously. “Rossi said Strauss sent you to consult?” His head tilted, trying to work it out.
“I don’t know why either,” you said, laying a hand on his arm. “But show me what you’ve got.”
He led you into the other room, where JJ gave you a small smile and a cup of coffee. It was lukewarm, but you needed the caffeine enough not to care.
You looked over the notes, taking in every word, every picture and detail. Spence gave a few updates as you did, from the note left on the wall to the theory about the killer having some kind of insecurity he was trying to hide in the dark.
JJ and Emily stood behind the two of you, watching in amazement.
“It’s like they have the same brain,” Emily whispered, noting how each time Spencer started with a theory, you would finish it.
JJ nodded. “It’s a little spooky.”
The rest of the team joined soon after, with Aaron looking as stone faced as ever.
“Do you know why-” You started, but with one look, you knew now wasn’t the time to ask. So, you turned to the board. “So we know he wants your attention because of the message. But he also wants to hide, keeping to the dark, using it to fuel people’s fear. It’s both a form of power and a way for him to conceal himself.”
“And he isn’t just doing it here,” Aaron said grimly. “Go ahead, Garcia.”
-
It was grueling. Going over every detail of every crime scene of every murder. You’d gone through cases years afterward, but this? This was different. Working it. Waiting for him to strike somewhere else.
He left a baby in the closet of the last house.
And you were here trying to get inside his head. And worse… you liked it. Not the case itself, of course, but the being there, having the possibility of actually doing something. You weren’t just watching the aftermath and sifting through the scraps. You could help stop this guy.
“Have you heard from the prison?” Spence asked, the others going over what the last murder told them.
Checking your phone, you shook your head.
“Okay,” Emily said, standing up and walking to the board, looking at the first set of murders in LA. “Why them? Why now? He killed these two women before the rolling blackouts. What is it about them?”
You nodded, looking at the photos. She was right. The women were the start of it and they weren’t even during the blackouts.
While she and the detectives talked about the area, you kept looking at the pictures, scanning each and every one for some kind of clue.
Hello there.
Spelled incorrectly, but written in blood on the wall of a young mother, with her son watching from the closet. Then the baby.
“You think this is because of me?” Detective Kurzbard said, the conversation continuing on around you. “That all these people are dead because of that?”
Hotch leaned forward. “Two women killed in your division, no survivors. Then a couple, leaving the wife as a witness. Then a mother leaving, the son.” His words burrowed into your head, trying to understand. “Now two parents, but a baby survives.”
“If it’s some kind of pattern, I’ve never seen it before.” Detective Kurzbad shook his head, his shoulders suddenly weighing more with guilt.
It didn’t make sense.
You stared at those letters…And saw the birthday cards, the circled calendar days, the placement of arms over chests.
“He’s recreating something,” you said.
Everyone’s eyes shifted to you.
You took a breath and stood, looking at the pictures. “The first killings, that was to get your attention, like you said. But these last deaths? Leaving the children in the closet, forcing them to not only be there, but to witness what he did to their family. The baby wouldn’t have even known what was happening. He did it for him. For his memory. He’s recreating something.” You crossed your arms and faced them again. “What were his previous cases in this area?”
“The first two murders here in L.A. county were close by,” Spencer answered. “Long Beach is on the cusp of L.A. and Orange counties.”
Rossi nodded. “Let’s look into that one.”
Everyone opened files.
“Home invasion,” Reid read. “A husband was shot. Wife was left alive.” He looked up at you.
“Just like the second house,” you said.
“What’s the next one?” Hotch asked.
Derek looked down. “After Long Beach, he went to Santa Monica.” His face fell, brows drawing together. “Wait a minute.” He turned to the other detective. “Spicer, do you have family out there?”
Confusion swept over the room.
“Yeah,” Spicer said. “That’s where I grew up.”
Your stomach dropped.
Derek kept reading. “Home invasion robbery, double homicide. Joe and Sylvia Spicer were killed.”
The detective blinked like he didn’t hear him right.
“Those are my parents.”
Your phone rang, cutting through the tension like a bullet. It was the warden.
“I’m sorry,” you said, cheeks flushed. “I have to take this.”
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Spicer said, not noticing you at all. His focus was entirely on that file. “Let me see that.”
He reached for the paper.
You hurried out of the room.
Hotch and Reid both watched you go. They exchanged a look. While Morgan talked to Spicer, Hotch stood and followed you out.
You clutched your phone to your ear, the warden’s words sinking in.
“She wants to see me?” You asked.
“She keeps going on and on about how ‘her time is coming’ and ‘you’re her only chance.’ It’s really freaking out the other prisoners,” she sighed. “And between the heat and news getting around about this Prince of Darkness guy, I don’t want to give them any more reasons.”
“Yeah, of course.” You glanced up at your brother. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“I appreciate it, Dr. Y/L/N. I’ll see you soon.” She hung up.
“Everything okay?” Aaron asked.
You nodded, though still confused yourself. “I have to get back to the prison.”
“Right now?”
“Yeah. I know. I’m sorry. I want to help as much as I can, but-”
He held up a hand. “You’ve helped plenty. I’m more worried about you going out there. They’ve called off the blackouts, which means the grid could get overwhelmed. If the power goes out, we might not be able to reach you.”
You swallowed.
You’d be alone in the dark out there.
“I’ll be okay, Aaron,” you said. Laying a hand on his arm, you looked over his shoulder into the room. Spence was working with the others, focused on the case. “Besides, all of my people are already behind bars.”
“Not when they’re across the table,” he said grimly.
You tilted your head back and kissed his cheek. “Be careful. And tell Strauss I appreciate the opportunity to work with you all.”
“What do you know about that?” He wondered. “She didn’t tell me anything about it before and this case has far less in common with the Night Stalker than the press made it seem.”
You shrugged. “I figured you knew something.” With a small smile, you let the swell of everything die down in your chest. “Don’t worry, Aaron. I’m not getting any ideas.” With a final pat on his shoulder, you headed out.
He went back into the room and faced the photos of the Prince of Darkness’ victims.
What was Strauss playing at?
-
You felt like the universe was jerking you around, fate pulling one way, then back the next. First, your interview was postponed. Then, you were called into work with the team-something you never imagined would become a reality. And now you were going back to the prison for the interview. The mental whiplash was making your head hurt.
The radio droned on about the ‘Prince of Darkness,’ making your drive even more ominous.
You hoped what you’d said helped. Anything to get this guy behind bars. Maybe then, you’d stop gripping your steering wheel so tightly.
The front guard let you through, looking paler than she had before. When you started back to the room designated for the interviews, you understood why.
Someone was laughing. It was loud, echoing down the hall towards you, reaching out like a hand. She sounded almost childlike, but there was no joy in the giggling. It chilled you to the core.
You twisted the handle and stepped inside.
“Thank you for meeting with me, Mrs. Owens.” You kept your tone as even as possible. Professional.
“Hello, Dr. Reid.”
You felt yourself flinch before you could stop it.
“I think you might be confused,” you said. “I’m Dr. Y/L/N.”
She just smiled. “I’m sorry. I should have asked. Are you going to keep your last name, hyphenate, or change it?”
Your thumb rubbed the inner band of your ring. You sat down.
“I changed mine,” she shrugged. “I thought about switching it back after my Seth died, but Mandy Owens just feels like who I am now.” She looked up at you, green eyes wide and watching. “I think you should hyphenate. Dr. Y/F/N Y/L/N-Reid. Doesn’t that sound so official? Like you should have your name on case studies and books and such.” Her nails tapped against the table.
They’d taken off her chains, like you’d requested for all of your interviews. If they were locked up like animals, they wouldn’t trust you.
“I guess that’s what this is, though, isn’t it?” She laughed.
“It is. I was hoping to ask you a few questions about yourself, Mrs. Owens.” You placed your tape recorder on the table. Pressing play, you gave her a small smile. “I understand that you were asking me to come back. Can you tell me why?”
“I didn’t want you to get stuck in the dark before we could talk.”
“The rolling blackouts have been called off.”
Mandy Owens smiled.
And the lights went out.
-
The station kicked on the generators soon after the power gave out. But the phones weren’t so lucky. The signal cut out midway through a conversation with Morgan, leaving him and Spicer on their own on the way to Spicer’s sister’s place.
Reid didn’t trust it.
It didn’t make any sense for the killer to strike at the apartment. He had no connection to it. But if all he cared about was getting to Spicer, this was the best way to do it. The thoughts went round and round in his head while the officers around him were frantic with getting back to people who’d called just before the lines went dead. That’s when he heard it.
“...at Taggart Women’s Facility.”
He whipped around, locating the woman who’d said it.
“I’m sorry, what did you just say?”
The officer was busy trying to get some sort of communication back up and running. “They have a situation at Taggart Women’s Facility. The power went out, but when it came back on, a riot broke out, took their generator down.”
His heart leaped into his throat.
She furrowed her brows. “Dr. Reid, are you alright?”
-
“What the hell?” You gasped, eyes trying to adjust quickly. For a second, everything came back on, but then it was off again. Outside, you heard the sounds of shouting, running steps, and loud thuds you didn’t want to think about.
“Sounds like they finally got sick of the spaghetti,” Mandy snickered. She hadn’t moved from her seat, despite not being bound. She was sitting with her hands folded on the table, still ready for the interview. “We should keep going.”
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” You tried to still your breathing, keep your voice calm, but it wasn’t helping. You were stuck here, in the dark, with a woman who killed three children. The only light was the small red recording signal on.
“Would you rather go out there?”
Another guard ran by the door.
They’d forgotten all about you in this chaos.
You took a deep breath. “Okay. Okay, let’s continue.”
“You want to know why I killed my students,” Mandy said. “I’ve already told the police, the judge, the press. Ask any of them. It’s the truth.”
“You said you committed the murders because-” You opened the file to a news article. “‘They’re futures were too dark for you to bear.’” A lump stuck in your throat. You tried to swallow it down. “You believed you were saving them.”
“That must sound like a broken record to you.” Mandy leaned forward. The sympathetic smile she gave only put you more on edge. “I’m not your mother, Y/N.” She reached her hand to yours. “And neither are you.”
You jerked away, jaw clenched and lips set in a hostile line.
Mandy just kept watching you with pity.
It took a moment to calm yourself, but when you did, you clicked your tape recorder off, casting you both into darkness.
“I would rather not talk about that, Mrs. Owens.”
“Please,” she said, “call me Mandy.”
You took a few breaths, letting your eyes adjust again, and turned the recorder back on.
“I would like to know more about your life, Mandy.” You adapted your stoic tone, trying to channel the skills of your brother.
“Have you told him yet?” She blurted.
You clench a fist under the table. If this was the way to get anywhere with her, so be it.
“Told who what, Mandy?”
“Your fiance.” She motioned to the ring on your exposed hand. “Have you told him what you’re afraid to want?”
Her words swam together in your head.
“I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you mean.”
“I think you do.” She stared at you for a long time. Then blinked. Then continued. “Anyway, I could feel that those kids needed my help. I could hear what they would become, what the world would do to them, and I just couldn’t let it.”
“What told you that, Mandy?” You asked. If you could keep the focus on her, maybe she’d stop looking at you like that. Like she knew something you didn’t.
“I wasn’t lying to the police, you know.” She leaned back in her seat, casting her in an eerie red shadow. “I don’t know. But I just knew. Just like how I know about you.”
Play along, you told yourself. Play along and get out of here.
“And what do you know about me?”
“I know that you have trouble trusting people, even your fiance. And I know that opening up is hard for you because the last time you did, you were damaged beyond repair,” she said. She was using her teacher voice and it unnerved you even more. “And I know that you want a family, but you’re terrified of losing the one you have.”
She watched you, waiting for a reaction.
You didn’t give her one. Instead, you just leaned back, forcing your shoulders to relax.
“You got all that from looking me up?”
Mandy laughed. “I didn’t have to look you up, doctor. Haven’t you been listening?”
“So the voices told you about me?” You would have written notes, but it was too dark to see.
“I don’t know if I’d really call them ‘voices’, but yes.”
“Why would they do that? What’s important about me?”
“You’re my last chance to help someone.” At this, her tone changed. It was the most sincere she’d sounded since you sat down. Her words, barely more than whispers, still echoed through the small room. “I knew I could make you see. Before it’s my time to go.”
“Make me see what?”
“What you already know.”
You pushed through the fog she was creating, turning that interview room into a sweltering sauna.
“What do you mean, ‘before it’s your time to go’, Mandy?”
She just gave you a small, sad smile. “You’ll see.”
“Are you planning to hurt yourself, Mandy?”
Footsteps grew louder outside.
“Mandy, why is this your time to go? What are you going to do?”
“Fate has pulled you back and forth, today,” she said. She didn’t get up, even though you’d leaped to your feet. “It’s time you got some rest.”
“Dr. Y/L/N, we have a situation. We need to get you out of here,” one of the guards put a hand on your arm, pulling you to the door.
“Mandy, are you going to hurt yourself?”
She just kept smiling and watched you go.
“Mandy!”
-
You hid in the warden’s office for the rest of the long, long night. With the power still out, the phone lines were still down. You had no way of checking on the team, making sure everyone was okay.
When the chaos died down, three people in the women’s facility were dead. One guard, the inmate leading the rioting… And Mandy Owens. She was shived on her way back to her cell by an inmate who knew one of the kids she’d killed.
You were still trying to make sense of it all by the time they finally let you go, after hours of statements and security checks and getting looked over by the paramedics even though you hadn’t seen any of the fighting.
Fate has pulled you back and forth today.
You didn’t know which unsettled you more, the fact that she was right, or that fate wasn’t done yet.
By the time the phones came back, you were just eager to hear someone’s voice, so you hit the first number you saw.
It rang for a while and a jolt of panic went through you.
Wasn’t Derek working with Spicer?
“Y/N?” His voice should have calmed you, but it didn’t it had an edge to it you hadn’t heard in a long time.
“Derek, hi. I just got out of the prison. There was a riot and-”
“Listen, I don’t have time, right now. Why don’t you call Reid?” He snapped.
You leaned back in your car seat, swallowing hard. “Derek, I’m sorry-”
“Unless you have anything you can help with, be sorry later.”
He hung up.
The car behind you honked, so you got moving. Turning toward the station, your phone rang. This time, it was Spence.
“Are you going to yell at me too?” You answered, more than a little pissed.
Spencer grimaced. “I heard you called him.”
“Yeah. I was looking for an update on the case and I got shut out.”
“He’s had a long night.”
“Haven’t we all-”
“Spicer’s dead,” he cut you off.
All of the anger left in a breath. “Oh.”
“Are you okay?” He asked. “I heard what happened at the prison and I couldn’t get a hole of anyone and-”
“I’m alright, Spence,” you said. “I’m on my way to the station now.”
“Be careful.” You could hear the exhaustion seeping into his voice. “The killer got away and… he has Spicer’s daughter.”
“Jesus.” You ran a hand down your face, silently cursing the traffic surrounding you. “Okay, I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
Of course, with L.A. turning into a panicked race, as soon as you can turned into another two hours, all the while, you were listening to the radio for updates. They described the daughter, asked anyone for information, detailed new murders that occurred right after the girl was taken. The bastard was using her for bait.
After a while, you just tuned it out, focusing on what felt like a thousand cars in front of you.
Mandy Owen’s voice still rang through your head.
How could she know so much about you?
Could what she said have any truth about it? About…
You scoffed at yourself for considering it.
No. She looked you up. She looked up Spencer and put the two and two together. It’s the only thing that made sense.
But how did she know?
The voice on the radio started to sound familiar, breaking through your thoughts like a pick through ice. You turned it up.
“Look. You can tell, I'm not a hostage negotiator, but I am a mother.” It was JJ. You didn’t know how she got on the radio, but you were sure that it was her. She was talking to the killer. It was like a press release, but specialized just for him.
What was Aaron doing?
You pulled over to listen.
“I know what your mother did to you when you were little, what she was, what she made you watch, what she let men do to you and it makes me so... it's just not fair. And no one can make that better, I wish I could, I do, but if I could somehow go back there, you know, and make what was happening to you stop, I could just pick you up and just tell you it'll all be okay. That's what moms are supposed to do.”
You sucked in a sharp breath.
She kept talking. “They're not supposed to be the cause of your pain, they're supposed to make it go away. They're supposed to hold you and tell you everything is going to be alright. They're supposed to tell you that thunder is angels bowling. And that it's okay to be afraid of the dark, and it isn't silly to think there might be monsters in your closet. And that it's okay if you want to climb into bed with them just this once because it's scary in the room all alone... They're supposed to say it's okay to be afraid, and not be the thing you're afraid of. But most importantly, they're supposed to love you no matter what.”
You didn’t know when you started crying, but once it began, you couldn’t stop. You sat there, on the side of the road, bawling like a baby in a rental car. And she was talking to a serial killer.
“What happened to you it isn't fair, it isn't right. I'm supposed to empathize with you... sympathize... understand... but I can't. That... that would be a lie. The truth is I don't understand what you've done, I don't sympathize with you killing people all these years, and I especially don't understand you taking Ellie. What I can do is tell you what a mother should tell you, that you can't take away your pain by hurting someone else, that it doesn't make all the nights you had to hide scared and alone any better if you scare someone the way you're scaring Ellie. What happened to you... it isn't fair, but what you're doing to her isn't fair either. And if anyone should understand what that feels like it's you.”
JJ’s frustration and anger and power rang through from the radio. You couldn't think of any other word for it. Power. And that’s just what she wanted him to hear.
“You have the power, you can do what you want to do, but for once you can choose to use that power to do for Ellie what should have been done for you. You can choose letting her go. You can choose teaching her that, yes, there are monsters, and it's okay to be afraid of them. But it's not okay to let them win, and it's not okay to be one.”
You switched off the radio and took a few moments to catch your breath. Then you started driving again.
-
You sat on the curb outside of the police station. The blazing sun glared down at you with its hateful eye and even the icy water in your hand did little to help. It was over. By the time you reached the station, it was all over. Derek had to shoot him. The girl was released. Even though both her father and her aunt were dead, you could only hope she’d be okay. You chugged the rest of your water.
A hand held out another.
Derek looked down at you, squinting because of the sun and frowning because… well because of everything else.
“Hey,” he said.
“Thanks.” You took the water and started chugging that as well. After your time in that interview room, your throat still felt like it was filled with sawdust. The dark, curious part of you wondered if there was a killer who did that. Stuffed people with sawdust. You’d have to look into it.
“You okay?” Derek asked, taking a seat beside you.
“Not really. You?”
He just shook his head.
The two of you sat there, looking like a couple of zombies, and sipped your water.
“I’m sorry I yelled at you,” he said.
“Derek,” turning to face him, you put a hand on his shoulder. “If I was in your situation, I would have done a hell of a lot more than yell.” With a pat on the back, you turned back to the parking lot. “We’re square.”
He just chuckled and kept drinking.
“There you are.” Spencer opened the front door. You saw his mismatched socks from the corner of your eye and listened to the crazy woman in your head who was now in the prison morgue.
You reached up, took his hand, and pulled him aside.
Spencer’s brows drew together. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah. Yeah.” You took a deep breath. “There’s just something I want to run by you.”

When I watched the 9th episode of the 6th season of the Dragon Prince, I cried.
Aaravos tears are mine. Aaravos tears are the one of any parent who lost a child.

Sonia died the 26th June of 2020. Three weeks earlier she asked to Aaron Ehasz on twitter "What about season4 ?"
Like her, many Dragon Prince fans have a lot of questions to the creators. They are building theories.
She loves fan fictions.
Some of them are on her website:
https://www.sonia-piotelat.vip/
She used to show me some extracts of the Dragon Prince asking my opinion about a fact or a character behaviour. That was her world. Not interfering in her fandom was important for me.
She created an amino dragon prince server with more than 1000 members. I had to announce her death and that was really hard.
I received some amazing advice from fans: put a dragon prince egg on her grave! I'm not an artist, but a friend of mine did it. The most important was: watch the Dragon Prince!
I would be grateful if there's a third arc of The Dragon Prince. This diary is a way to say "thank you" to all this young people who helped a bereaved mother. They deserve it!

Chris Geidner at Law Dork:
On Monday, the five men on the U.S. Supreme Court said they would take President Donald Trump and his administration at their word in litigation over Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. This despite the fact that these are the very people who have spent the past 24 days trying to avoid; manipulate; deceive; and, in at least one instance, likely outright ignore the courts in the litigation. The four women justices would do no such thing and said so — although Justice Amy Coney Barrett held back a little more than the others. On a 5-4 vote and with an unsigned, per curiam opinion, the Supreme Court granted the Trump administration’s emergency request to vacate the district court orders that had been temporarily blocking Trump’s unprecedented use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans who the administration has decided are part of a gang, Tren de Aragua. The orders had been in place since the Trump administration began implementing Trump’s proclamation on March 15. At the same time, however, it is important to note — as both sides did — that there was significant unanimity hiding beneath Trump’s “victory” on Monday. All nine justices agreed that AEA removals are subject to judicial review — and that the propriety of Trump’s invocation of the law here was not addressed by Monday’s decision — and that due process requires that anyone the administration is seeking to deport under the AEA receive notice that they have been so designated and have an actual opportunity to challenge their AEA-related removal. That unanimity is important — and does mean that this ruling could be more temporary than it is devastating. At the same time, though, there is much to question and challenge in the five-justice majority’s disturbing opinion — which said nothing about how those people sent to the El Salvador prison on those first two planes on March 15 are to address their claims. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson both warned in their dissents — Sotomayor in a part joined by Justice Elena Kagan and Jackson — that the court’s decision is “dangerous.”
The MAGA Majority ruled 5-4 in favor of Donald Trump’s mass deportation schemes based on enforcement of the Alien Enemies Act in Trump v. J.G.G.
4 women (3 liberals + ACB) ruled against, while the 5 MAGA men ruled in favor.
The court, however, was unanimous in ruling that AEA removals are subject to judicial review.

@thetravelershub said: // Scratch and Grounder, Sonia and Manic, Chris from Sonic X… I’m aware all of these sound like joke suggestions LMAO but I would be curious to see how you’d portray them
Those ideas... certainly do sound like joke suggestions. I honestly thought it was a bit when I got the notification on my phone. But never let it be said that aaron industries does not put the highest amount of effort into our shitposts.
For Scratch and Grounder, I could see them as some sort of Scrapnik Island escapees. They used to fill the position that Orbot and Cubot now occupy, before Eggman got tired of them and tossed them out for something more compact. If you're going to have two blunderbots for flavor, they should at least make sure that they're not in the way more than they were literally designed to be.
I believe those two also appeared in the Archie comics Post-Genesis Wave as employees of Breezie's! The idea that they were sold off to her and now work there could be enjoyable. But... the only problem is that... I'm not really sure what interactions they could possibly have. They're good for a gag, but even I struggle to really inject depth into Scratch and Grounder.
The only idea I have now is them being upset that they were tossed or sold off without a care in the world, now wanting to show that they're worthwhile in some way, shape, or form. That could be an interesting way to make them even slightly relevant, lmao.
Now, Sonia and Manic. They have potential. It's either the long lost siblings approach or siblings displaced through reality and they've been isekai'd to the modern timeline.
I... admittedly don't know much about Sonia and Manic, due to me never watching Sonic Underground outside of a quick gag, but. I know they can be portrayed as proper characters! I'd just have to lock in and see what I'd wanna do with them.
And, uh... I honestly have very little for Chris. Oh, Chris Thorndike. I feel as though time has been overly cruel to you, but I still cannot imagine actually caring about you.
The only thing I'd want to do with Chris is, like... the weird direction he went when they had a timeskip after Sonic and Co. left to go home and Chris was left without his best friends. So he spent the rest of his days trying to find a way to jump through reality to be reunited with them. It's that weird obsession that's oddly real.
I mean, say you, standard human being reading this post right now, met a mythical creature and went on fantastical, mind-altering, life-changing adventures with them. After they left, you probably wouldn't be able to get them out of your head, right? How would you readjust to your normal reality knowing that that exists out there, somewhere far beyond your known laws of knowledge?
It's... a little bit of an uncomfortable take, and I don't think I'd want to portray that, but I do find it interesting at the very least.
#(OOC.) ''The kind of tired regular sleep can't fix.''#thetravelershub#((i hate how much i actually love thinking about how i'd write certain sonic characters))#((the brainrot for this godforsaken franchise runs so deep; it's sickening. i adore it so much sdfyhtgrfdcxsz))

Please pick your favorite or answer all, up to you because as you know very well, I cannot make decisions lol:
Top 5 Poets (and/or Poems) 📖
Top 5 Rom-Com Movies 🎥💖
Top 5 Logan Echolls Moments 😭 (#Justice4Logan)
Last but not yeast… 🥁
Top 5 Types of Bread 🥖
Sonia....you are an icon. Always seeking to go above and beyond. Which makes sense because (much like myself) you are the eldest child. Permanently tired, eldest child overachievers please raise your hands.
I'm gonna do the top 5 Logan moments (although they're more like quotes and parts of Logan that I LOVE) AND THEN I will do the rest via reblog (because I need to carefully consider my responses). By the way, I'm only doing seasons 1 and 2 because they're the best:
1 "I thought our story was epic, you know, you and me. Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined, bloodshed. Epic."
Obviously, one of the PEAK LoVe moments on the show - I was SO MAD at Veronica for running away from this. This was Logan at his most vulnerable.
2 "I'm sure I'll thoroughly enjoy them. Right up until my oesophagus closes up and cuts off my air supply and I shuffle off this mortal coil."
Aaron was absolutely responsible for Logan's trauma and I loved these moments where Logan let him have it (see also: "When is my birthday? Wow. You got a letter right.")
(couldn't find a GIF for this one but have Veronica and Logan kissing in the same location).
3 "Well first, I'd just like to say the other, uh, nominees are all such wonderfully gifted criminals. And I wanna thank my agent and my publicist for always shooting me from the left side."
Classic bad boy Logan humour - even when he's being locked up. I love that Logan's hatred of Don Lamb is equal to Keith's, Veronica's, Weevil/the PCHer's...even though he is a rich white boy.
4 "But if you're coming home, who will play dead hooker 2 on CSI next week?!"
He's so damn witty and sharp, and some of his best lines are when he's sparring with Trina (see also: "I just can't get him off my back"/"Did you try standing up?").
5 "You're not a killer, Veronica."
I mean I've literally adapted this line so I think it's obvious why I love it. Veronica is the main character she ABSOLUTELY needs no man - but I love the moments when Logan steps in as the voice of reason or helps hold her together.
BONUS!!!!
"well there was this one girl. blonde, petite. smelled like marshmallows and promises."
"promises? that's the name of my perfume!"
