Konsekwencja. Powiedziałam sobie, że jak się dostanę na doktorat, zaczynam naukę kodowania muzyki na żywo w programie Sonic Pi. Mimo że twórca terminu algorave odżegnuje się od posthumanizmu, to można wykazać pewne cechy tego zjawiska, które wpisują się w ten namysł.

Decentralizacja roli artysty na rzecz połączeń, sieci, kolektywności w której bierze udział kod pisany w czasie rzeczywistym a technologia zakłada pole do błędu i nieprzewidywalności generowanego dźwięku. Maszyna sama prowadzi narrację muzyczną, nawigowana jedynie przez kodera.

Ogólna dekonstrukcja aktu sztuki jako czystego procesu twórczego, zapewniając całkowitą transparentność perfomansu (zrzut ekranu komputera na ścianę jako wizualizacje)

Odejście od linearności i cyklu. Koderzy starają się nie zapisywać danych i linijek kodów, które wpisują w programy do live codingu, na rzecz unicestwienie dzieła pod koniec.

Jest to dla mnie wyzwanie i ciekawa perspektywa, gdyż jako poetka zdecydowałam się na eksplorowanie psychologii głębi, poszerzania i odzyskiwania języka, wydobywania go z podświadomości, w której kumulują się popędy i instynkty, archetypy i cienie. Choć Jung też jest konstruktywistą, nie bada technologii, lecz symbole i naturę ludzką w pewnym sensie w oderwaniu od wyznaczonych przez religię i kulturę schematów myślenia (tzw. dążenie do Całkowitości, innymi słowy najwyższej samoświadomości).

Technognoza zatem to moje nowe zajawki, do zobaczenia na mrocznym algorave, daję sobie rok na zdobycie biegłości w live codingu

I didn't know that. I wish I had the discipline to learn pure Java. I've tried learning Python several times but always get bored. The languages I've gotten deep at all in all had lots of visual or sound feedback which can be very immediate. Processing, P5JS, TouchDesigner, MaxMSP/Jitter, SonicPi, Hydra , all have that in spades.

Met behulp van het programma Sonic Pi heb ik aan da hand van codes 2 verschillende tracks kunnen maken. Na dat ik beats heb gevonden waar ik tevreden mee was ben ik naar de site “http://ubuweb.com” gegaan voor een oude stemopnamen van iemand te vinden dat interessant was. Ik vond een interview met de fotograaf en regisseur, Man Ray. Deze geluidsopnamen van zijn stem heb ik dan verwerkt met de twee tracks. Uiteindelijk heb aan de hand van een bal (waarvan ik het geluid heb opgenomen) een ritme gemaakt en dit heel de tijd opnieuw afspelen als een goed ritme voor de muziek. Ik ben zeer blij met het eindresultaat.

Voor de opdracht om een spraak sample te gebruiken in Sonicpi had ik gekozen voor een stuk uit een interview met David Lynch. Wat hij zegt is een beetje mysterieus en vaag dus ik heb mijn muziek in dezelfde sfeer gemaakt. 

Ik vond dat het precies uit een horror film komt omdat het niet altijd op ritme zit en omdat het traag is. 

Ik vind wel dat ik mijn doel heb bereikt om het in die sfeer te maken.

Ik heb Adobe audition gebruikt om de verschillende stukken bij elkaar te zetten en om de sample op de juiste plek te zetten.

Week 7 - Synthesising and Coding

This week we delved further into the web of technical stuff we can’t understand and began to look at basic synthesis (basic = very difficult) and the different sounds you can use on Soundtrap. We looked at an example synth sound and were given the opportunity to experiment with the four different sound waves of Sine, Saw, Triangle and Square. We could also tweak these in certain ways such as using the Mix option to blend two of these sounds together (10/10 would NOT recommend doing this with Saw and...well anything!!) or by adjusting the amplitude through manipulating attack, delay, sustain and/or release. And like I said, this is the ‘basic’ synth sound, there are several more that are much more complex yet surprisingly free such as Helm and VCV Racks. 

This however was only the first half of the lesson. After this we entered the realm of coding where half of the definitions and terms just flew over my head. This coding segment was helmed by Rowena Stewart, an expert in computer coding and specifically using code for music making. She introduced us to a program called SonicPi which allows you to use similar commands present in the cmd on your PCs but using them to represent certain pitches and play them in a consecutive fashion, hence creating melody. So you all know where this is leading...

You could also stack multiple pitches to form chords and set a tempo (I’m quite certain you could alter the dynamics but can’t exactly remember how). You used commands such as ‘play’ and ‘sleep’ to represent sound and silence respectively and the # symbol to represent sharps e.g C#. We were then tasked to write our own melody (yes get ready for it) using the skills we just learnt and present them to the class. Now there are so many songs and tunes that I know so it was very difficult to decide on one to use...hmm...there has to be some song that I perform every time I get the chance, just one that I use for every single blog post...what could it be??
