TRIPITAKA - the lost spiritual sequel to Cosmology of Kyoto was found
This post is a compilation of a series of tweets I have composed over a period of weeks during this summer.
For years, it was uncertain whether TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, by Soft Edge, had in fact ever been published. I remind the more absent-minded readers that this is the studio responsible for the mythical CD-ROM Cosmology of Kyoto, originally released in Japan in 1993, later published in the United States by Yano Electric in 1995. Knowledge of this their second and final production comes solely from the online CVs of producers Hiroshi Ōnishi and Mori Kōichi. No other information could be found online, and no actual copy of the game was known to exist.
Earlier this year, this disc surfaced at Yahoo Auctions. It sold for nearly $300 after 24 bids.
As suggested by its tile, which translates to Xuanzang Sanzo's Dharma-Seeking Journey, it was always assumed that the game illustrated episodes of the life of the celebrated Chinese Buddhist monk, particularly his 7th century pilgrimage to India. The captures printed on the back not only show a character highly reminiscent of the ancient scholar, they depict a variety of scenes taking place in China and India.
According to the severely incomplete archived version of PD Inc's website, the Japanese publisher responsible for this digipack, it was available for sale at museums hosting the 1999 Silk Road Journey To The West exhibition, which suitably matches the date printed on the back cover. However, this date presents yet another open question, as the Ōnishi-San and Kōichi-San bios both list it as a 1995 production.
The technical specifications may provide an enlightening clue, as they refer to Windows 95, 640x480px resolution and an 8-Bit color mode. This indicates that TRIPITAKA was indeed developed sometime between 1993 and 1995, although it was never published in the CD-ROM game circuit, certainly not in the immediate years after its development was completed. Combined with the data retrieved from the publisher's website, the edition shown here appears to have been produced solely for the occasion, as a means to diversify the museum shop catalog for this major exhibit, given the shared theme.
It would have been nearly impossible, had the program been in fact published in 1995, for a single copy to not have been spotted or mentioned online by the many Japanese collectors who have attempted to locate it for decades, unsuccessfully. On the other hand, a CD-ROM that was sold at a museum exhibit is likely to be purchased by visitors who were entirely unaware of the item's relevance as an elusive multimedia gem.
If a tangent is permitted here, both productions are inextricably linked with the museum space, and as far as I can speculate, Cosmology of Kyoto was, itself, also published with the intention of being made available in gallery stores in addition to computer game retailers. I say this because this was a production made possible by collaborative efforts including a variety of Japanese museums, to the extent these are referenced by name in the game's credits.
Considering the price at which the item was sold at auction, I was fairly certain that it was purchased by one such video game collector who knew exactly what they were bidding for. Later in July, I was able to locate the buyer and establish contact. Initially, the buyer was only able to produce this screenshot of the disc program launcher. The title reads "Cosmology of Asia", validating the claims that Soft Edge was in effect planning for series of edutainment software prior to its demise in the mid-90s.
In my second contact with the owner, I asked if he was available to produce a disc image and share it online for purposes of software preservation. The owner politely declined, stating that this was not something he was willing to do but offered to record the following gameplay video instead.
youtube
At a glance, the art style of Tripitaka is unsurprisingly similar to that of Cosmology. Most of its episodes occur during the day, whereas the latter was mostly played under the dark cover of night. The first scene depicts a dying Xuanzang reminiscing on his journeys in the company of a young chronicler. Structurally, both games are also nearly indistinguishable from one another, producing ample historical information for context, including detailed maps and chronologies.
TRIPITAKA was considered to be lost media for decades. As such, the importance of this footage could hardly be overstated. I would not hesitate to compare this development to the unearthing of Osamu Sato's Chu-Teng, the Eastern Mind sequel that was also deemed lost for many years, miraculously found during the time this blog was inactive.
I am delighted to have played a minor role in the unraveling of this thirty year old mystery, and can hardly contain my enthusiasm, as I now find myself equipped with sufficient information to produce a full post concerning a game about which I could not have written more than a sentence, just last year.
I would also like to thank the author of the @mendelpalace Tumblr for his timely alert regarding the Yahoo listing.

you must have this many dead friends to ride
it's TDOR (well, it was). unable to sleep, i read through all the deaths reported in the 2022-23 trans murder report (a year out of date, I don't think they've released this year's one yet.)
I'm not quite sure why i felt i should do this. if it's a gesture for the victims... well, if someone murders me one day, i don't think it will mean much one way or another if someone in faraway country reads a brief two sentence report that a 30-35 year old trans woman with 'other' occupation was found tied up with burn marks or something. nevertheless, it is the time of year for this ritual.
most of the deaths are reported in central and south american countries, largely due to reporting bias, though there's more reporting now from countries like India and Pakistan - almost nothing from east asia though, probably due to language barriers. it's hard to draw much of a conclusion about anything since many of the reports don't say much, the stats are subject to extreme sampling bias, etc etc. but the general types of story are: "her partner murdered her", "she was killed by gunmen on the street/in her house", "there was an argument and the other person decided to kill her over it", "the mob killed her for extortion reasons", 'her body was found in some awful condition", "the cops killed her" (including Tortugita, who they shot 57 times at the 'cop city' protest), and of course good old "explicitly anti trans hate crime" (which covers Brianna Ghey, the one death from my country, and several from the US).
my murdered sisters are in most cases very young. younger than me.
the statistician in my brain wants me to acknowledge that i don't know the degree that trans women are specifically subject to murder for being trans women or by abusive partners etc, and how much it's "just" about being poor and racialised and living in a place where paramilitaries, gangs etc routinely murder people. sex work is a dangerous line of work for many reasons, but it's also going to be the case that a lot of us are sex workers so even if we were all equally likely to be murdered, a huge number of the dead would be sex workers, just as many of them were beauticians.
but honestly, even bearing that in mind, a whole lot of sex workers were killed.
there is something particularly ghoulish in talking so drily about death statistics; the website uses the painful phrase 'concerning trend' in regards to the demographics of people killed (overwhelmingly trans women, sex workers and not white), as if a perfectly proportional series of murders would be less 'concerning' somehow, but what exactly are you supposed to say? it is of course a window into who a society is comfortable getting rid of, but we already knew that. there's a reason that a sex worker is the go-to plot-inciting murder victim in fiction.
collating death reports like this... in part it is done as a matter of political advocacy, saying 'look, we are being murdered by the hundreds [multiplied by some nebulous but significant underreporting factor]'. but of course, if that's our goal, we are holding our deaths up against, for example, the tens of, likely hundreds of thousands of people killed by violence in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine in the last year - events which have already divided the world into people who can't stop it, and people who can but don't care to. and what do we want done about it? to beg the state to come down and apply its monopoly on violence more stringently? often the police are the ones killing trans women.
so what remains is ritual. we light candles, and read out the names of strangers who nevertheless have this one important thing in common with us, the ~global community~ of trannies and such - this was a person who refused to take the awful role they were given, asserted their own will to change their body, managed to live a life at least partly on their own terms, and then got killed over it.
but we don't have time to tell the life story, no time to describe the mess of relationships and aspirations that drive a life; there is no time to imagine what feelings we shared, what they enjoyed, what stories we might have laughed about if we'd known each other...
we have time for 'found dead in a car'.
if that.
in my country, we face a very different threat distribution - i don't really expect anyone i know to get murdered (though it's not impossible, there are people I'm close to who have been viciously attacked and there was little to do to stop the attacker coming back), but I'm sure Fall won't be the last of my friends to die by suicide. if we are 'fighting like hell for the living', our project here is more about trying to build lives that are worth living for, and weathering whatever fashy deluge is coming down the political pipes. what does fighting like hell even mean here? i think i used to think i knew.
but this night at least, I'm remembering my friend Fall, who we lost back in 2022. I made this page about her, and the feelings that came up from her death, with writing from friends who knew her better than me. I'd be grateful if you read it and helped some part of her memory live on. (apparently they wrote a little memorial for her in the recent translation of Shōnen Note: Boy Soprano which she worked on.)
I never got to ask what Fall thought of all these TDoR rituals - it's one of many things I didn't get to talk to her about and I bet she'd give me something unexpected to think about, formed some ingenious connection. or maybe she didn't think much of it! but it's as good a reason to think of her as any. she was awesome, she should have been given a much better hand by this world, and it is more shit for not having her in it.
I bet the friends of any of the 321 people on that list, and everyone on this year's list, would be able to say something pretty similar.
entropy always gets its way. but I'll hold onto what I can of her, my fragment of her ghost, for as long as we can. i guess that's the point of the ritual. hold onto our ghosts. tell each other that, one day, they'll stop accumulating so fast.

Finished reading Victorian Age Vampire. I have to admit, as far as a setting book goes, it gave me more or less everything I could have asked for. The opening fiction was absolutely chilling. The book presents solid information for setting a chronicle in the Victorian era, gives fairly good information about what the clans and sects were like back then, with a particular focus on the independent clans, actually. The Giovanni, Ravnos, Setites and the Banu Haqim each get considerably more page space than their sectarian fellows.
The geography section is very interesting, written from a perspective of a (dare I say it) ghost of a painfully British gentleman, and covers more or less most major cities in Europe, bits of Africa and India. The narrator's own biases are pretty painfully obvious, but then, it's written in character, so I really can't blame it too much.
What surprised me the most about this book is an almost complete lack of actual rules. It seems like the intent was that you'd use it in conjunction with the Revised edition VtM corebook (at least I think it'd be Revised, I don't know the exact release dates for specific editions) but honestly? This just makes it work wonderfully as edition-agnostic material. It also gives suggestions for running a dice-lite or even a diceless chronicle, which is interesting, but I'm not sure how well it'd actually work in practice.
Now, the storytelling section. This may be the new standard to which I hold setting advice, as it goes in depth with tips and advice for running a gothic-style chronicle and it's wonderfully expansive and quite exhaustive, in my opinion. Even if it ends up repeating itself a few too many times for my liking, I think it presents an overall very solid advice and it honestly makes me want to try my hand at writing something set in the time period.
I'm gonna go read the Victorian Age Companion next, but overall, I'm fairly positively surprised by this book.
That said the "ugh political correctness" remark in the afterword is hard for me to read as anything other than childish. Also it's weird how in the antagonist section they seem to arbitrarily give werewolves a Humanity score as well? Perhaps a weird nitpick, but it caught my eye nevertheless.

media release: JACKSON WANG , the global icon releases new single, “BUCK,” feat. Punjabi superstar, Diljit Dosanjh, and launches pre-order for his album, MAGICMAN 2, set for release July 18, 2025

Jackson Wang has released “BUCK,” the third single from MAGICMAN 2, featuring Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh —an iconic figure in Indian music and film, who’s collaborated with Sia, Camilo, and Ed Sheeran. Pre-orders for the album are available now on Jackson-Wang.com, with the full release set for July 18, 2025.
“I dreamed of going all the way to hell to deal with you,” Jackson shared, setting the tone for his hard-hitting dance-pop track,“BUCK.” With smoky vocals and breathless gasps, the song is matched by a sinister music video. Directed by Jackson Wang and Nicholas Lam, the video combines macabre imagery with frenetic choreography, highlighting Jackson’s showmanship. “BUCK” drops as Jackson arrives in India, continuing his global journey.
Alongside the MAGICMAN 2 pre-order, Jackson has introduced a wide range of physical formats and exclusive merchandise available through his official store and major retailers. Fans can choose from standard and limited-edition CDs and vinyl, including signed copies, boxed sets featuring exclusive apparel and posters, and retail-specific versions such as the Barnes & Noble Exclusive Opaque Orchid Vinyl and the Target Exclusive CD with a bonus acapella track. A series of product drops tied to the four thematic chapters of the album will roll out over the coming weeks, offering collectible chapter-specific editions.
Jackson’s most personal and ambitious body of work to date, MAGICMAN 2 is produced entirely by Jackson and crafted over a year plus. After stepping away from the spotlight for the first time in his career, this much needed break opened unaddressed emotions, resulting in a raw, unfiltered chronicle of growth. From manic highs fueled by denial, to the painful reckoning of lost identity, setting boundaries and shedding people-pleasing tendencies, to ultimately finding peace through acceptance. The album’s rollout has already made waves worldwide, further cementing Jackson’s status as a truly global force in music. Lead single “High Alone” debuted at No. 1 on Apple Music in 22 countries and regions, while the follow-up, “GBAD,” has gone viral with over 31 million YouTube views.

Attar Perfume vs. Modern Fragrances: What’s the Difference?
In the world of fragrances, there is a growing interest in attar perfumes, especially among those looking for a more natural, long-lasting, and unique scent experience. But with the wide availability of modern fragrances—commercial perfumes, eau de toilettes, and colognes—many fragrance enthusiasts find themselves wondering: What exactly sets attar perfumes apart from their more contemporary counterparts? In this article, we will explore the differences between attar perfumes and modern fragrances, helping you understand which one might be the best fit for your personal style and needs. At Scent Your Soul, we offer a curated collection of premium attars that bring the richness and tradition of this ancient perfumery art into modern living.
What Are Attar Perfumes?
Attar perfumes, also known as ittars, are a type of natural, alcohol-free fragrance derived from plants, flowers, herbs, and spices. Unlike modern perfumes that often contain synthetic chemicals, alcohol, and water as their base, attars are made using essential oils extracted from plants through steam distillation or other traditional methods. This oil-based fragrance is highly concentrated, which makes it last longer on the skin and provide a deeper, more complex scent profile.
The history of attar perfume dates back thousands of years, particularly in the Middle East, India, and Asia, where attars were used for spiritual purposes, personal care, and cultural rituals. Over time, attars have gained global recognition for their richness, authenticity, and connection to nature.
Modern Fragrances: The Commercial Revolution
Modern fragrances, on the other hand, are typically alcohol-based perfumes designed to offer an appealing scent while being more accessible and easily mass-produced. These fragrances are created using a blend of natural and synthetic materials, with alcohol acting as the primary carrier for the fragrance oils. Alcohol serves as a solvent, allowing the perfume to evaporate quickly upon application and release its scent into the air.
Modern perfumes are generally divided into several categories, including Eau de Parfum (EDP), Eau de Toilette (EDT), and Eau de Cologne (EDC), each with varying concentrations of fragrance oils and alcohol. The higher the concentration of fragrance oils, the longer the scent lasts. However, even the most potent modern fragrances tend to be less long-lasting than their attar counterparts due to the volatility of alcohol.
Key Differences Between Attar Perfumes and Modern Fragrances
While both attar perfumes and modern fragrances serve the same primary purpose—creating a pleasing and long-lasting scent—there are several important differences between the two that are worth exploring. Let’s take a closer look at these distinctions.
1. Ingredients: Natural vs. Synthetic
One of the most significant differences between attar perfumes and modern fragrances lies in their ingredients. Attar perfumes are made entirely from natural materials, with oils extracted from flowers, herbs, and other plant-based ingredients. These oils are often pure, and the distillation process preserves the integrity of the plant’s aroma.
In contrast, modern fragrances often contain both natural and synthetic ingredients. While some high-end perfumes use natural extracts, many commercial fragrances rely heavily on synthetic compounds to mimic the smells of natural oils. These synthetic ingredients are designed to create specific scents or enhance longevity, but they can lack the depth and authenticity of natural attar fragrances.
For those seeking a more natural and eco-friendly fragrance experience, attar perfumes are the clear choice.
2. Longevity: Long-Lasting vs. Shorter Wear
One of the key advantages of attar perfumes is their longevity. Because they are oil-based, attars are much more concentrated than modern fragrances, meaning they have a much longer wear time on the skin. A single application of an attar can last for 8 to 12 hours or more, depending on the scent and how it interacts with your skin chemistry.
On the other hand, modern perfumes, especially those with a higher concentration of alcohol, tend to evaporate more quickly. While Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette can last for several hours, they are generally not as long-lasting as attar perfumes. This makes attars an excellent choice for individuals looking for a fragrance that can carry them through an entire day or night without needing reapplication.
3. Scent Profile: Rich and Complex vs. Light and Airy
Attar perfumes tend to have a deeper, more complex scent profile. Due to the natural oils used in their creation, attars often evolve over time, with top, middle, and base notes developing gradually. These fragrances can reveal layers of scents, from floral or fruity top notes to more grounded, woody or musky base notes. The result is a rich, multi-dimensional fragrance that lingers on your skin in a sophisticated manner.
Modern fragrances, while also designed to be appealing, are typically lighter and more straightforward in their scent profiles. Synthetic ingredients can be engineered to produce specific fragrances more quickly, which is why modern perfumes are often simpler and more linear than attars. The complexity of an attar, with its natural ingredients and gradual scent development, appeals to those who appreciate a more nuanced fragrance experience.
4. Alcohol vs. Oil-Based Formulation
A major difference between attar perfumes and modern fragrances is their formulation. Modern perfumes are primarily alcohol-based, with fragrance oils dissolved in alcohol to create a fast-drying, easily dispersible scent. Alcohol can be harsh on the skin and may cause irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin.
Attar perfumes, however, are oil-based, making them gentler on the skin. The absence of alcohol means that attars don’t dry out the skin or cause any irritation. Additionally, the oil-based formula helps the fragrance stay on the skin longer, allowing you to enjoy the scent for an extended period without it fading quickly.
5. Environmental Impact: Sustainable vs. Mass-Produced
Attar perfumes are generally produced using sustainable and traditional methods, with many being handcrafted by artisans who take pride in creating high-quality, eco-friendly products. The ingredients used in attars are often sourced from local and ethical producers, making them a more sustainable choice compared to mass-produced commercial perfumes.
Modern perfumes, while available in a wide range of options, are often created using mass production techniques that may not always prioritize sustainability. The use of synthetic ingredients and the high demand for certain fragrance components can sometimes lead to environmental concerns, especially in the case of ingredients that require large-scale farming or industrial processes.
Which One Should You Choose?
The choice between attar perfumes and modern fragrances ultimately depends on your personal preferences and needs. If you’re looking for a natural, eco-friendly fragrance that lasts longer and offers a rich, evolving scent, attar perfumes may be the perfect option for you. They provide a unique, timeless fragrance experience that is deeply connected to nature.
On the other hand, if you prefer the convenience of easily accessible commercial perfumes with a lighter scent profile and a quicker dry-down, modern fragrances may suit you better.
Explore Premium Attars at Scent Your Soul

Our collection is crafted using only the finest natural ingredients, ensuring that every fragrance is not only long-lasting but also an authentic representation of traditional perfumery practices. Conclusion
Both attar perfumes and modern fragrances have their own distinct appeal. Understanding the differences between these two types of fragrances will help you make a more informed decision and choose the fragrance that best suits your lifestyle and preferences.

Hellsing OC: Eshika Cheema
(Commission by @.爱嘟生活馆 on Bilibili)
A brief introduction of my OC's early life, including her relationship with Walter, though I haven't decided the ending for her.
The format referred to the Hellsing fandom wiki. Thanks to the contributors!
I'm not a native English speaker, so feel free to point out my mistakes here ; )
Early Life
Eshika was born in India in 1944, her parents both serving Mrs. Hellsing's family for long. When Mrs. Hellsing got married with Arthur, young Eshika moved to England with her, and settled in the Hellsing's maison.
When they just arrived, servants in the house often gossiped about the two outsiders behind their backs. The girl, loyal to her hostess, confronted them every time she heard it. Once an argument intensified, and Eshika had to stand against several maids alone. Walter, having just finished his job, returned and called off the farce.
"Why do they respect you, but don't respect us?" said the girl, as she sat on the stairs and watched the young man light a cigarette. "In this house, you have to win respect for yourself," answered Walter. "Then... may I become someone like you?" Walter paused; for the very first time, he looked into the foreign girl's eyes, moist and stubborn. She was outnumbered by enemies but never flinched, for something she wanted to protect... With his heartstring pulled a little, the young butler exhaled smoke and smiled. "Yes, you may."
Later on, Eshika took the training of the Hellsing Organization to become a vampire hunter.
Before the Events of HELLSING
As the Millennium's first recession, Arthur decided to seal Alucard. Walter and Eshika focused more on the internal affairs of Hellsing family, rather than hunting down vampires.
Shortly after giving birth to Integra, Mrs. Hellsing passed away. On her deathbed did she ask Eshika to take care of her daughter. The housekeeper promised to protect Integra with her own life. Then she became Integra's nanny, took care of her in her everyday life, and taught her specific knowledge, like alchemy.
In 1989, Arthur passed away, and entrusted 12-year-old Integra with the Hellsing Organization. Sir Irons suspected his brother Richard would harm Integra and warned Walter in advance, but Walter had already become a secret spy for the Millennium. Instead of stopping Richard, he brought Eshika away from the maison in the excuse of a "date". As a result, Integra released Alucard to save herself. Eshika was guilty to expose the young lady to danger, against her promise to the late hostess. Although she didn't get suspicious of Walter, the incident made their relation unable to go beyond fellowship.
Later on, Walter and Eshika, as the maison's butler and housekeeper, helped Integra run the Hellsing Organization, until the Millennium made its comeback...
