Here's the version of that post with all the advice about linux and info about firefox added to the end.
And just in case you or anyone else needs it here is the information about specs and expectations for buying a computer (this was put together in 2023 but the information in it is still valid; just make sure you're checking processor generations)
Thanks for reading and I'm glad that coffee shop is still entertaining people all these years later.

Do you know of a decent place to see which phones still work well after years? I'm noticing pretty damning performance issues with my Xperia meanwhile my razer phone 2 is still chugging along!
Longevity is kind of double edged, there's update support and there's raw performance. For update support, there's EndOfLife which has details for a few brands, and you can otherwise usually find a recent list pumped out by an aggregator site if you search "Update Support <Brand> Phones". Just because support is long doesn't mean it'll necessarily run well, (Samsung has long support on even their slowest phones) but it's a start.
For performance, the flagship phones with high end processors and tons of RAM do a lot to future proof a phone against the increasing resource demands, so your best bet is often just benchmark results relative to those.
GSMArena will usually have GFXbench or 3DMark and GeekBench results for phones. Versions change often but, you can usually look at like, the contemporary Samsung S or S Ultra whatever which is pretty reliably one of the fastest fast phones of its generation and see how what you're looking at stacks up. e.g. here's a Nothing 3a pro vs the Samsung S25.
Tumblr media
Huge performance gap! GeekBench and AnTuTu are sort of holistic usability benchmarks, while 3DMark is mostly gaming focussed. Here's my phone (Pixel 8) vs its contemporary S24. Now that I mention it, contemporary pixel is also a good "middle of the road" benchmark for recent generations.
Tumblr media
No good graphics comparison, but you can see, ~65% performance give or take in general use. This also shows you how big the inter-generation gap was this time, pretty big!
Another thing that matters more than you might think is storage. Modern phones use eUFS 2.x or eUFS 3.x, both of which are high performance flash standards and which are a huge step up over older eMMC storage. Slow flash like eMMC dramatically affects app performance and only makes it worse if you run out of memory and have to hit swap. Snappy app transitions under Android involve a lot of careful memory management and swap usage so slow storage can really highlight that. GSMArena will usually list the flash standard a phone is using.
Memory has a much narrower spread these days, even the cheapest new budget phone will usually have 6GB of RAM, but getting 8 or 12GB will help reduce swapping and improve caching for application launching and multitasking.

Georgette's mystery, solved at last. Her Intel 13th gen i9 processor was defective from the start. 😑
They're offering to extend my utterly useless warranty for "up to" 2 more years. You know, the warranty where they wanted to charge me $100 to get a phone call where they'd tell me how to reset Windows? The thing I've not only done dozens of times with computers over the years, but have already done 3 times on Georgette. So yeah, that's a prize for sure.
Tumblr media
Oh well, at least I feel a little bit vindicated that it WASN'T something I did wrong and, no matter how many times Dell insisted there was nothing wrong with her, there definitely WAS something wrong with her on a deeply fundamental level.
Poor Georgette. Her life span will be shortened because of this. But she's trying so hard to be a good PC now. I was able to install the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster and she's playing it like a champ, Denuvo Anti-Cheat and all. Good girl. They put a demon in you right from the start but you're trying so hard now. *patpat*

Microsoft, you absolute fuckers. /BIG derogatory
So my laptop forced an update, I've been trying to figure out how to get around this one but nothing worked. I've spent three days trying to make it let me shut down without updating. I finally had to restart it (and the only options were to shut down With Updates) because it started freezing with 100% of the C disc and RAM, and processor getting close to 100% too. Like, freezing so badly I get the crash pop-up that says something to the effect of "Microsoft Windows has stopped working". Yes, it says WINDOWS CRASHED.
I put my internet connection on metered YEARS ago to avoid this. Yes, I changed it to metered when I started using the Ethernet instead of WiFi. Yes, I set it to metered when we changed the network name/password.
But it apparently downloaded the update anyway. And gave me 3 days before it started trying to force me to update on shutdown.
I figured, I could let it run the update, and then roll it back, right?
WRONG!
I had it set to create a system restore point weekly, but apparently that didn't happen! Not even fucking ONCE!
I literally JUST installed the updates last night but it's telling me it did it over 10 days ago. Even my 3 days of stalling isn't 10 days ago.
They apparently put Copilot on Windows 10 now and we aaaaall know how I feel about AI.
Also my computer now takes a full 10 minutes after login to be USEABLE (typing this on my phone), so that's great. /s When it does become useable, the disk is constantly at 90% or higher. And I don't know why because the RAM is only at 50%. (Probably something to do with the DOZENS of "system host" processes in Task Manager now.)
The only sole singular Good Thing about this update is that they let you UNINSTALL copilot. u`_u
So I disabled the Windows Update service this time. I know ~important security updates~ happen, but I'd like to retain what little power of choice Microsoft is leaving us with.
When this laptop dies, I'm switching to Linux.
I'm so fucking done.

THOUGHTS ON THE WORLD'S... SLIMMEST FOLDABLE?
Tumblr media
Being a foldable fanatic I have been lucky to test use the last generation Honor V2 and it satisfied if not almost what I expected of a foldable for its time.
It's the year of the Honor V3 and several noteworthy features has undeniably grabbed my eyeballs.
My thoughts is first of all on the newest and thinnest body plus folded look, not just for Honor past foldables but the foldable industry in general, it comes with a 9.2mm folding thickness, it weighs about 226 grams and that's next level based on what brands have offered so far making it already dubbed as the "World's Slimmest Foldable", the slim design plus the weight earns it a 10/10 in my durability rating, the Honor V3 is definitely sending me some comfort vibes, so sleek looking and compact to be carried and lifted anywhere with zero chances of burden, A1 rating here ✅
Periscope on this device is nothing short of the word INCREDIBLE, the device already has some impressive array of cameras but I'm most thrilled with the periscope, we are still crying to some brands to help us develop a periscope lens on regular slab devices which is more easier and practical, but look the Honor V3 has a 3.5x optical periscope telephoto lens even for a foldable, foldables before are known to miss out on certain features because of their come factor, but Honor definitely did not compromise with the Honor V3 🫴
They gave it their all.
50W wireless charging on a 5150mah is mega, someone please help me ask Honor how they managed to achieve this incredible battery while still maintaining the compact 9.2mm look of the V3?
I have no idea about smartphone engineering but I know a great job when I see one, the battery is good enough to cover daily needs for us consumers even the hardcore Call of Duty gamers, I use a basic bar phone with 4600mAh, so I hope you get why I'm so excited for a foldable to beat me to it lol, we don't get this much on the foldable side of things but the Honor V3 did it and it's worth feasting on, I would definitely love to share my feedback after some time of real life uses.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the processor of this generation so i definitely saw this one coming since Honor V3 is a flagship foldable like the Samsung Z Fold 6, but I still would love to see how the processor blends in terms of performance and optimisation with Magic OS, OS often times determine how best the hardware responds that's why two phones can have same hardware but one performs better, it's not rockery science, since the MagicOS has a history of doing well, I'm eye peeled to see the optimisation with this beastly processor.
The Ai features is something I haven't seen more light on since but I think after the launch in September 5, we would be seeing more of that. Ai easily gets me excited these days, why you may ask?
So many scenarios are painted in my head for the Honor V3, like what would it do?, how far does it take user experience? What are the features; I know there is Ai eraser, Ai studio, Ai camera focus.. but is there any chance the Honor V3 has anything different in store for the enthusiasts?
I'm genuinely positive for the possibilities the Honor V3 can create with Ai integration for the foldable department, let's wait and see. September 5 it is guys 🗓️

Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 benchmarks show why Nothing Phone 3 might not be truly Elite
Hadlee Simons / Android Authority Nothing announced last week that its Nothing Phone 3 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset. This is a somewhat polarizing move in light of the company marketing the phone as a “true” or “real” flagship, where customers would expect a top-flight Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. However, the POCO F7 just launched today, and it’s the first global…

How to Maximize Battery Life on Your Smartphone: Top Tips for All-Day Power
Your smartphone is your constant companion—whether you're working, gaming, browsing, or staying connected with loved ones. But nothing kills the convenience faster than a dying battery at the worst possible moment. Fortunately, with a few smart habits and tweaks, you can extend your phone's battery life and make it through the day without reaching for a charger.
In this guide, we’ll explore simple, effective ways to maximize battery life on your smartphone, no matter what device you use. Whether you're on Android or iOS, these tips will help you conserve power, improve performance, and make your phone last longer.
Looking for reliable accessories to boost your phone’s battery and charging speed? Check out Nav Emporium, where tech meets convenience and affordability.
Why Battery Life Matters More Than Ever
Smartphones have evolved dramatically—with better displays, faster processors, and more powerful apps. But all that innovation comes at a cost: battery drain. A phone with poor battery life is frustrating and can leave you disconnected when it matters most.
By understanding how your phone uses power and making a few strategic adjustments, you can keep it running strong all day—and protect your battery’s long-term health.
1. Adjust Screen Brightness and Timeout Settings
The display is one of the biggest battery hogs on any smartphone. Keeping it at maximum brightness all the time drains power fast.
Quick Fixes:
Lower the brightness manually or enable auto-brightness to adjust based on lighting conditions.
Shorten screen timeout to turn off the display quickly when inactive.
Use dark mode if your phone has an OLED screen—it saves power by turning off black pixels.
🌓 Bonus Tip: Switch to minimal or static wallpapers instead of animated ones.
2. Turn Off Unused Features
Features like Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi are great—but only when you need them. If they’re constantly on in the background, they can waste energy.
Save Battery By:
Turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use.
Disabling location services for apps that don’t need GPS.
Using Airplane Mode in low-signal areas where your phone works harder to stay connected.
📶 Tip: You can customize location permissions for each app in your settings to reduce background drain.

3. Manage Background App Activity
Many apps continue running in the background, updating content, sending notifications, or syncing data. This not only eats up battery life but can slow down your phone.
What You Can Do:
Limit background activity for non-essential apps.
Use Battery Saver Mode to restrict background processes automatically.
Close unused apps or restart your phone to clear RAM.
⚙️ On Android: Go to Settings > Battery > App usage. ⚙️ On iPhone: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage by app.

4. Keep Your Software Updated
Software updates don’t just bring new features—they often include battery optimizations and performance fixes.
Always keep your OS and apps updated to the latest versions.
Manufacturers regularly improve power management through system updates.
📲 Pro Tip: Enable automatic updates or check manually every few weeks.
5. Use Power-Saving Modes
Modern smartphones come with built-in battery saver or low power modes that adjust performance and background tasks to extend life when you’re running low.
Activate Battery Saver Mode at 20% or sooner if you know you’ll be away from a charger.
Some phones even offer extreme power-saving features that disable everything except calls and texts.
⚡ Want smarter charging options? Browse Nav Emporium for fast-charging accessories and portable power banks.
6. Optimize Charging Habits
How and when you charge your phone can significantly impact battery health over time.
Best Practices:
Avoid full discharges—try to keep your battery between 20% and 80%.
Don’t leave your phone plugged in overnight regularly.
Use certified chargers and cables to avoid overheating or power spikes.
📦 Looking for high-quality, affordable charging gear? 👉 Head over to Nav Emporium and explore power banks, fast-charging cables, and more.
7. Reduce Push Notifications and Vibration
Every notification your phone receives lights up the screen and vibrates—two major drains on battery.
Conserve Energy By:
Disabling push notifications for non-essential apps.
Switching from vibrate to silent mode when possible.
Using Do Not Disturb or Focus Mode to limit alerts during work or sleep.
🔕 You’ll also enjoy fewer distractions and improved focus!
8. Remove or Replace Battery-Hungry Apps
Not all apps are optimized for power efficiency. Some social media, games, or weather apps can drain your battery faster than you think.
Action Steps:
Monitor battery usage in settings and uninstall or replace power-hungry apps.
Use lite versions of popular apps—they use less data, storage, and power.
Try accessing services through your browser instead of downloading the app.
🔍 On Android or iOS, go to Settings > Battery > Usage by App to see what's draining your phone.
9. Use Battery Health Features
Some smartphones include battery health management tools that protect your phone's longevity.
Features Include:
Optimized Charging to slow charge once 80% is reached (available on iPhones and select Androids).
Adaptive battery usage based on your app behavior.
Battery usage history and health score for monitoring degradation.
⏳ Extend your phone's lifespan with smart usage and the right accessories from Nav Emporium.
10. Carry a Portable Charger or Power Bank
Even with all these optimizations, sometimes you just need more power. A portable charger or power bank is a must-have for travel, work, or long days on the go.
Choose one with fast-charging and enough capacity (10,000mAh or more).
Consider compact or solar-powered options for outdoor use.
Look for models with multiple ports to charge multiple devices at once.
🔋 Never run out of power again—shop portable chargers at Nav Emporium
Final Thoughts
Your smartphone is an essential part of your daily life—but it’s only useful if it stays powered. By following these battery-saving tips, optimizing your usage, and equipping yourself with smart charging accessories, you can extend battery life, reduce frustration, and get more out of your device every day.
Remember, keeping your battery healthy isn’t just about today’s charge—it’s about ensuring long-term performance and reliability.

Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro Review: Budget Excellence
Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro Review: Budget Excellence I’ve not had many issues with performance. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 inside feels snappy almost everywhere. In the camera app, you may see some stutters or shutter lag, and that’s the only area where I felt that this phone was equipped with a midrange processor. In all other respects, it feels just as powerful as a flagship,…
