I just read Batgirl #7 and. Ho. ly. Shit.

I’ve worn a hairstyle similar to this.

I have a relative who used to live in a monastery that looked a lot like this.

I recognize the form of those buildings and those prayer flags. I’ve lit incense at a stupa like that.

I know those instruments. I remember such a festival. I know which part of Tibet that woman with her back turned is from (the same as me!)

I’ve done this dance.

“Akhu.” Goodness gracious that’s an explicitly Tibetan word. She’s calling him uncle.

I don’t think ya’ll understand what a big deal this is for me. I’m freaking out. The details aren’t all exact but the intention is clear. DC has just given Lady Shiva a Tibetan cultural background.

For all that media loves to use the Himalayas as an exotic setting for big cool action, it’s so rare that I get to see the people who actually live there acknowledged! Like it’s always a lone mystic or an army of faceless ninjas.

Now, I’ve gotta hedge that I’m not really ecstatic about this whole ‘evil asian women redeeming themselves through their (almost always wasian) children’ trend that’s going on, or this particular dynamic in Lady Shiva’s backstory:
