i saw someone say they never actually played a splatoon game and only watched two story modes. it felt a bit weird to me but i think there is something to think about.

most of all the story/lore/worldbuilding in-game is text and images and are basically identical if you read them on a wiki

The chat logs and sunken scrolls and alterna/dev logs, have nothing to do with whats going on. The gameplay, the things you do, don't inform what information you're given at all.

You unlock things either just with normal progression or as random collectables. In splatoon 1 and 2 the sunken scrolls corresponded to each level, but they didn't take advantage of that at all. Most sunken scrolls just were about whatever. They made it per area in splatoon 3. So it's even more detached from the gameplay.

The Dev Diaries and Acht's letters, are all unlocked in exactly the same way. Every single one, other than having to change what weapon you use, it's the same.

Shit, most of the god damn world-building, ISN'T EVEN IN THE GAME! It's on the websites, in artbooks, interviews (both in-universe and developers), soundtrack releases, whatever.

Other than the first two story modes, there are like Actual things which happen in the games which can't be summarized in a sentence (most of the story about Octo Canyon was in the "Squid Sister Stories." Not Even In The Game).

Octo Expansion has an amazing final sequence, which, is mostly cutscenes and you can just sorta watch on youtube. You don't need to know what happens in Girl Power station or any of the levels at all.

RotM had a Lot Of Shit Happen but... actually i think it did it the best for experiencing the story Through The Game (not by much). Though It sucks that the story has absolutely nothing to do with the gameplay and they often straight up contradict or just doesn't make sense. Oh yeah the whole fucking thing crashed and killed everyone. Don't ask why everything's in completely pristine condition.

Side Order sort of just cleared up all of the story points within the first 10 minutes of the game, right after the tutorial Marina just explains Everything and then that's just what happens for the rest of the game. There's no twist or any evolving story that isn't in the Dev Diaries which don't affect the Actual Game.

The thing i'd say you miss out the most on is small character moments, but there's also plenty of compilations and people pointing them out too. There's definitely a lot of things you'd miss, a lot of spectacle, and some emotions, but idk i feel like it's not too much in the grand scheme of things.

Splatoon has amazing world building, but kind of bad storytelling (i guess nintendo in general, i can see it a bit in botw/totk as well) and it kinda gives room for people to actually be genuine fans of the series, story and world, without even touching a game at all.

As much as I don't want to buy a switch 2 and all that, i really hope Raiders does this storytelling well.

I also have nothing against watching like longplays of the game or just like full game walkthrough or whatever. I call myself fans of games which i've only watched and not played. I'm saying you can totally be a fan with a really large amount of knowlege of splatoon without even doing that.

I have had this comparison of RotM to Outer Wilds in my head a lot and i'm gonna walk my dog then i'll write it out

Side Order is officially 1 year old! (Emotional ramblings below)

Side Order means so much to me - from the moment we got that initial teaser trailer I was in love. I can still remember reading theories about it and looking at early fan art...sigh. the memories

It was even one of the driving forces that helped me start drawing more often, and it really helped to improve my drawing skills. (I have loads of my old Side Order art but I probs won't post it cuz they're not that good lol)

After an ENTIRE YEAR OF WAITING, we finally got it, and I even got up at 1am to play it as soon as it released. I was not disappointed, and the whole thing felt like a dream come true.

I managed to complete the tutorial spire in the early hours of the morning, and then came back to it later that day to finish the main story. It took me a couple of months to clear the spire with every palette, and I still haven't managed a no-hack run with Eight's palette (sshhhhh don't judge)

I have loved every. Single. Second. The floors, the enemies, the gameplay in general, the delicious lore and the SOUNDTRACK OH MY COD I LOVE IT ALL SO MUCH

Sure the story wasn't as dark as expected, but that's what fanfiction is for! (Pspspsp. Go check out @nipotazzi 's fic Symphony in Fortissimo Agitando)

It really is peak splatoon. I know Octo Expansion is objectively the best campaign, but I wasn't in the fandom for it's release so Side Order will always mean a bit more to me :3

Sorry that I take so longggg to reply 😅 ngl. I don't even really know what kind of game type I like, because there's A LOT.

Most of the time my favorite is a indie games with a unique style, like, very stylish game. For example: Dead Cells, Hollow knight, Hyper Light Drifter, Cuphead, Undertale, A hat in time, Sky cotl, Journey, Nuclear throne etc.

Sometimes, I just like specifically games about driving and the ocean! Like, Dave the driver, ABZU, and Subnautica!

I can say that I'm a big fan of the ocean and sea!! I really like the mystery and beauty of it, especially about the sea creatures<33

Although, I do like the game that's in the main stream too! Like, Monster hunter, Marvel's Spider-man, Minecraft, Pokemon, FNAF, Friday night funkin, Cookie run, Splatoon and Twisted Wonderland.

Oh yeah, about the game soundtrack!

I really recommend the soundtrack from the game called " No Straight Roads ", this game was AMAZING! Both the soundtrack and game art style!! You're gonna love this! Also, another game that I recommend is " Just Shapes & Beats ", If you're a fan of EDM you're gonna love this too!

I have a friend from Highschool and she's gonna graduate next year, I became great friends with her in my senior year of highschool in late 2022 because she also loves Splatoon as much as I do (It's very hard to find Splatoon fans in West Virginia, me and her are rare), and she's the main reason I have Tumblr. Unfortunately I haven't seen her after I graduated (I haven't seen any of my friends again after my graduation ceremony), she did sign my Grad dog before the last day of school though (She also putted "Stay Fresh!" on it too) I'm thinking of getting some splatoon gifts along with my Tumblr account and Discord account on a piece of paper so I can talk to her again. What kind of Splatoon gifts should I give her?

Oh wow... hmmm... well I got some ideas on some splatoon related gifts.

I think the most obvious gift for a splatoon fan is a plushie, if you can remember her favourite Idol then give her a plushie of that Idol. Or just get any splatoon plushie that you can afford and get on time.

These plushies will probably be the easiest and cheapest to find.

Another gift idea is an amiibo. Or maybe you can get one of those two pack or three pack amiibos for your friend. I'm sure they'll really love and appreciate that gift.

You can also do a hand made gift if you're into arts and crafts. Maybe make a card by printing off some pics of Splatoon characters you both like and sticking them in one of those birthday cards? But if the card has themeing on the front then cover it up with splatoon stuff! If your friend likes Callie for example, then make a Callie card!

If you're into baking then maybe try and make some splatoon themed goods? Like some cookies or muffins and put them in a container and put your tumblr and discord account onto the lid. I'm sure there's ways online to make your own cookie stencils or squid themed ones online. And make sure to decorate it with colours like orange, blue, pink, green, etc. You don't have to make a ton of cookies or muffins tho lmao, just a small bunch would be more than enough.

Also take a look at Play Asia to get some imported goods from Japan! They have splatoon stuff and that's how I got my Shiver plushie. They got stickers, official soundtrack cds, mini secret figures, amiibo diorama kits! All the good stuff other countries don't get!

i don’t really know how to describe my music taste tbh… if i could describe it in a jumble of words it would be “if a guy from the 90s met your middle aged dad and a gay autistic high schooler and they all collectively made a road trip playlist”

i listen to a lot of video game soundtracks (mostly like splatoon lol) and a lot of instrumental music (scott pilgrim soundtrack my beloved)

but i also really like music from the early 90s to late 2000s… so bands like gorillaz, muse, the killers, radiohead… and also unfortunately weezer ik ik i’m lame 😔

i also really like daft punk which tbh that and a lot of my other favourite bands are influenced from my dad. which speaking of i listen to some misc bands and such from the 70s/80s thanks to my parents mostly. my dad’s a huge fan of the band the tragically hip so road trips were mainly filled with their music…

also i had a HUGE jazz phase when i was like 12 lmao. not as much but i like it and electro swing

Overall thoughts:

Besides the stream breaking, I'm really excited for this. I have Hollow Knight but got stuck on some boss a few years ago and just never got back around to it. Maybe once I get through Thousand Year Door I'll go back to it.

Very excited about GameCube games coming back, I grew up on some of those games and man that was the shit. I doubt they'd be able to port Double Dash BUT IF THEY DID. I would be a happy man. And probably not play it bc im too busy playing mario kart world.

As always I was hoping to hear some news about Splatoon 4 since we know from data mines that it's in production. And CALL ME CRAZY but I MIGHT wait until the exclusive Splatoon variant comes out before buying a Switch 2 for myself. Luckily my bf is getting one so I could always play on his switch 2 in the meantime. Think that might be my best bet.

Actually I remember doing thick linearts before to make it look like y2k bubbly styled and I was thinking of going back again since I wanted to make logos or icons like this one:

These ig were just a lil practice if someday I'll be making one (or more of these). Also this is just an example btw, these are artist-made game icons. Imo, if it were me to be commissioned to design one or if I was assigned by a game dev, then most likely its gonna look like something that y'all won't know who did that thing lol.

Besides, I'm pretty sure a lot of people were inspired by my artstyle. 😭 Also in case you guys don't know what these are, I'll show you guys mine. (NOTE: You can still check on archive, I don't mind though-)

I kinda remember drawing this back in the day since 2023, the sketch version (on my other sketchpad) was discontinued. Supposed to finish it but, sadly I gave up because the hair was something that reminded me of an Inkling from Splatoon (rarely I noticed the first miku fanart also reminded me too lmao).

Okay LISTEN, I may not be good at anatomy but might as well tried especially RED's head. For the BG, I only duplicated the character + added a screenshot/fakescreenshot/whatever, to make it look related to both y2k & frutiger aero (same applies to Hatsune Miku).

Nothing to say much but I've been thinking of making more character concept arts in the future & maybe work on shoes since they look a bit too complicated much.

Overall, I'd say it isn't bad. I'll just leave as it is for now (until some BRC fan shows up and sees this).

I remembered drawing this for future use if I ever find a music composer either if they can do DnB, game soundtrack or whatever but it slightly depends on them. Also shout out to Lxchee Music! They're the ones who compose music like these. They even commented on my speedpaint video!!! (after using their songs lol).

Such a shame that I am limited to drawing only however, I wish I also was a composer of this whooooooole album then everyone's gonna listen to my bangers. One time I used to make music in Beepbox.co (a website where you can compose there).

There are some music-composing softwares that most people use for their game making & also songs. I wish I'd even use FL studio or other music-composing. Reminds me, I also have one friend who makes music (unrelated to dnb or any genre) using accordian & any other instruments that he uses. I swear, he is so good in composing Nintendo Orchestra-music related I can tell.

Conclusion

No worries though, I didn't say I hate using thick lineart but its sometimes too much for the anatomy still and might not fit pretty well. I can still do another one hopefully just to focus on more y2k aesthetic. But if it were me to learn anatomy, might as well use thin lineart and just increase to make it look like there is perspective on it.

Also when she introduced herself as Acht and i was lil confused as to whether she was going by a new name or that was the localization of Mizuta. But from what i've seen it seems to just be her localized name.

WHY IS SHE HERE(im not complaining but WHY) She was sanitized, she should have lost her personality. Why is she here? Why is she fine? HOW DOES SHE KNOW MARINA?? Like yeah Marina was a well known octarian soldier like i think even 8 knew of her but she didn't know of 8. So like it makes sense that Dedf!sh would know Marina, but why does Marina know Dedf1sh?? Like yeah music is an important part of both inkling and octoling society so like maybe she was also important? Or do they just know each other as friends???

AND ITS 8???? imma be honest i was lowkey in the camp that it was gonna be a clone of 8 or smth cuz of how unwilling they were to tell us if it was 8 or not. So it was interesting to get confirmation that it was in fact her!!!! Which like !!!!! EIGHT MY BELOVED!!!!!!!

Anyway, this thing seems like its gonna be like lil buddy in that it can help out. The trailer has a small split second where it has text about powering up the splat bombs from the lil pearl bot or smth. So like yeah seems like it can help. Plus that weird tether?? Laser??? Thing...??? we saw coming out of it.

ALSO INFINITE REPLAYABILITY AND THE PALETTE THING HAVING AN INFINITY LOGO ON IT PLUS IF YOU TURN THE NUMBER 8 SIDEWAYS YOU GET INFINITY AND THE NUMBER 8 WAS THE THEME OF OCTO EXPANSION AND NOW INFINITY MIGHT BE THE THEME OF SIDE ORDEr

i'm pretty sure it had already been confirmed in a dev interview or smth but this is 100% a alternate reality for if chaos had lost and order had won. i'm not sure how i feel about that??? but y'know what its happening so i can't do much about it. plus it does mean they can kinda do whatever they what without affecting canon too much which should lead to something interesting

ok wait back to the pearl bot real quick. the japanese website for side order (after google translated so take this w a grain of salt) says that "it appears to be Hime(pearls jp name) herself inside, but for some reason she appears to be in the form of a drone" SO LIKE??? WHAT???? WHY IS SHE IN THERE. I ASSUMED SHE WAS JUST TRANSMITTING THRU IT WHILE SHE WAS SOMEWHERE ELSE. which like to be fair i was wondering why she was not there in person. but its not like she was there in person for most of octo expansion either so like????

Also if this is taking place in 8s mind (seems unliekly after this) then maybe the drone is her way of communicating to 8 thru all this??? like maybe its smth marina made???

ALSO SPEAKING OF THE FIRST TRAILER. 8s hair was brown there but now its seems like its a washed out color. Like it can still change colors(especially near the tip) but its a rlly pale/pastel ink color usually.

OK RANDOM IDEA TIME. a lot of stuff looks digital. (the drone, the animation of 8 spawning into a level, the matrix code looking stuff etc) so like maybe this is a simulation of some kind that marina made to view into an alternate reality? like in that one interview:

She talks about finding a world of order at the end of the world. So maybe she made a device to peer into that world of order? And then her, pearl, and 8 made their way into it.

That might also explain dedfishs use of the phrase "innocent bystander who got SUCKED INTO all of this" so maybe she was nearby at the time of the device activating. But why would she have been there? and if she was there why would marina not have introduced her to pearl and 8??? maybe the device wasnt meant to be activated at that point yet. maybe it wasnt ready

so wheres marina??? she may have gotten separated from the other 2 and so now they are looking for her??? idk i am literally just rambling here. i have no clue whats going on and so many ideas.

but anyway, this all started because i was wondering how you would get to the dlc area. cuz its not like this is happening somewhere else in the world like in octo expansion. THIS IS AN ALTERNATE REALITY.
