NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: Into the Ancient by Joseph M. Hess
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/into-the-ancient-by-joseph-m-hess/
Into the Ancient presents #America as a post-patriarchal empire rife with entangled narratives erupting outside its conventional dying metaphors: collages of nostalgia entangled with post-modern decollage (Borrowed Browns), the future of our natural world trapped inside a Devil’s sexy endgame (Curve Wind), a pornography adjacent to love and loss (Flesh Cartography, Splendor) billboarded super models above Jehovah Witnesses (Low Ghosts in Brooklyn). The poems also present the quotidian turning provocative: a soldier’s longing wandering a convenient store (parallax), one’s individual agency wrestling with classical, gendered mythologies (Pandora and Orpheus, Spotting Odysseus). The poems wades in a textured poetics of allusion, imagery and metaphor, in an effort to decipher the ever-evolving, or mutating field of contact between enduring consciousness and fleeting awareness, between overly-normative cultural expectations and personal revelation. The #poems invariably twist away from traditional storylines to convey ideas strategically working out-of-synch, or contrapuntally, to bring the reader toward a lucid, emotive complexity.
Joe Hess is from Columbus, Ohio and received his MA from Miami University and MFA from Ashland University. You can find his work in The Ekphrastic Review, Into the Void, Lime Hawk, Postcard Poems and Prose, Helen Literary Magazine, Fourth and Sycamore, and a 2017 anthology from Shabda Press entitled Nuclear Impact: Broken Atoms in Our Hands. His chapbook, Trauma Décor, was released in January 2022.
PRAISE FOR Into the Ancient by Joseph M. Hess
In Hess’s Into the Ancient, a book that leaps centuries, landscapes, and modes of telling, the poet draws our attention most vividly to our essential loneliness. The ongoing historical traumas—personal and public—that inform these cinematic poems are rendered without sentiment. They do not comfort but speak their truth.
–Kathy Fagan, Kingsley Tufts finalist and author of Bad Hobby
Sharp, self-lacerating, and elegant, Into the Ancient crosses several continents while digging into memories: ex-lovers, a tragically lost brother. In Joe Hess’s exacting mirror, a troubling American style of loving, fogged-over and obscure against a late Cold War backdrop, starts to come clear.
–Cathy Wagner, author of Of Course. New York: Fence Books, 2020, Nervous Device. San Francisco: City Lights Publishers, 2012, My New Job. New York: Fence Books, 2009, Macular Hole. New York: Fence Books, 2004, and Miss America. New York: Fence Books, 2001.

Mold Remediation in Miami: Clearing the Air and Protecting Your Home
Miami's vibrant culture, sunny beaches, and bustling lifestyle create an irresistible allure for residents and visitors alike. However, amidst the city's splendor, there's an invisible threat that homeowners must be prepared to face: mold. Whether due to high humidity, water damage, or inadequate ventilation, mold can take hold and spread rapidly. Mold not only poses risks to the structural integrity of your home but also to the health of your loved ones. Mold remediation emerges as a crucial solution in maintaining a safe and healthy living environment. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the significance of mold remediation in Miami and explore how it clears the air and protects your home.

Unveiling Mold Remediation
Mold remediation is the process of identifying, containing, and removing mold growth within a property. It involves thorough assessment, proper containment, removal, and preventive measures to inhibit future mold infestations. Given Miami's tropical climate and high humidity levels, mold remediation is an essential practice for homeowners to ensure the well-being of their families and the integrity of their homes.
Safeguarding Miami's Indoor Comfort
While Miami's outdoor environment is often sunny and inviting, indoor spaces can become breeding grounds for mold if left unchecked. Mold can thrive in damp and dark areas, including basements, bathrooms, and poorly ventilated spaces. Mold remediation plays a pivotal role in safeguarding Miami's indoor comfort by eliminating mold sources and preventing its spread.
Addressing Health Concerns
Mold is not just a threat to your home's structure; it can also impact your health. Exposure to mold spores can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems. Mold remediation is crucial for mitigating these health risks and ensuring a safe living environment for you and your family.
The Urgency of Swift Action
When mold is detected, swift action is imperative. Mold can spread rapidly, infiltrating various surfaces and materials. Miami's humid climate provides an ideal breeding ground for mold growth. Immediate mold remediation not only prevents further spread but also minimizes the extent of damage and associated health risks.
Professional Expertise for Thorough Removal
While DIY mold removal might seem like an option, it's often inadequate for completely eradicating mold and preventing its return. Professional mold remediation services in Miami possess the expertise, tools, and techniques to effectively identify and remove mold, ensuring thorough and lasting results.
Preventive Measures for Long-Term Protection
Mold remediation goes beyond removal; it also includes implementing preventive measures to deter future mold growth. This may involve improving ventilation, addressing water leaks, and maintaining proper humidity levels. By taking these steps, homeowners can reduce the likelihood of mold returning.
Health and Safety as Top Priorities
During mold remediation, health and safety are paramount. Professionals take precautions to contain mold spores, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and ensure proper ventilation. This approach safeguards both the occupants of the home and the remediation specialists.
Comprehensive Restoration
Mold growth can lead to structural damage to your home, necessitating repairs after removal. Professional mold remediation services often provide comprehensive restoration, ensuring that your home is not only mold-free but also restored to its pre-mold condition.
Partnering with Insurance
In some cases, homeowners' insurance may cover the costs of mold remediation. Professional remediation companies in Miami often have experience working with insurance providers, helping you navigate the claims process and securing the coverage you deserve.
Restoring Peace of Mind
A home should be a haven of comfort and security. Mold can disrupt this peace of mind, but mold remediation restores it. By addressing mold issues promptly and effectively, you can reclaim the tranquility and well-being that your home should provide.
In Conclusion
Mold remediation Miami is not just about eliminating mold; it's about safeguarding your home and the health of your loved ones. In a city like Miami, where humidity and moisture create an ideal environment for mold growth, proactive mold remediation is essential. By understanding its importance and enlisting professional support, homeowners in Miami can clear the air, protect their homes, and ensure a healthy living environment for years to come.

The Pure Joy of Harry Styles Got Me Through 2020
BY MICHELLE RUIZ
Some people turned to controlled substances, tie-dye matching sets, or the ubiquitous sourdough, but it was Harry Styles in a Gucci chick egg sweater, crooning about oral pleasure on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series, that got me though some of the gloomiest days of 2020.
Shot in pre-pandemic February, the dreamy acoustic set, including riffs on the smash singles "Watermelon Sugar" and "Adore You," is a 16-minute serotonin rush: Styles, in his gravelly tenor, singing that he'd walk through fire for you; Styles, with his perfect, princely hair and rugged stubble, dancing on a swiveling office chair. It's unbearably charming, sensual, and fundamentally joyful; the 26-year-old Brit feel like a burst of confetti in a relentlessly terrible year.
youtube
Styles's sophomore solo album, Fine Line, was released at the tail end of 2019, but it fully bloomed in 2020: "Watermelon Sugar," his first number-one solo single in the U.S., was the undisputed earworm of summer; "Adore You" was the second most-listened-to song of the year, according to Variety, which named Styles Hitmaker of the Year. It's no coincidence that Fine Line was streamed more than 1 billion times in the throes of a global, deadly pandemic: "It's an album full of uptempo, unabashedly fun bops," Tia Williams, beauty writer, author of the forthcoming novel Seven Days in June, and avowed Styles fan, told Vogue. "'Watermelon Sugar,' 'Adore You,' and 'Sunflower' are like rays of light beaming on Laurel Canyon."
Styles's shiny, happy, summer-of-love aura provided a desperately-needed antidote to 2020: The "Watermelon Sugar" video, dropped in May, was "dedicated to touching," a technicolor, quasi-orgy on the beach that both made me long for the innocence of the Before Times, but also felt—for three minutes, anyway—like an escape from the horrors of the news cycle.
"2020 has been such a terrifying year," Williams said, but the cheeky world of "Watermelon Sugar" "can't help but take you away from our grim reality." Tyler McCall, editor-in-chief of Fashionista.com, has been "listening to Fine Line on repeat just to get through the year," she told me. "I think it's impossible to be in a bad mood when you're listening to 'Golden.'" (It must be noted, too, that album's breakup suite of songs, like "Cherry," spoke to the forlorn, aching nature of the pandemic.)
youtube
McCall and Williams both took a shine to Styles during the One Direction era, with Williams citing his "ethereal beauty, tats, and 70's rock-style songs." I made the grave mistake of overlooking Styles in his 1D infancy, shrugging him off as just another basic, beanie-clad boy band member. But I learned this year that he's a sex god like Jagger, a showman like Elton and a boundary-pusher in the grand tradition of Bowie, with his own personal ethos of inclusivity and sweetness. The 11th track on Fine Line—the retro-groovy "Treat People with Kindness"—is also a Styles mantra, splashed on official merch and backed up by vocal support of the LGBTQ+ community, a pledge to back Black Lives Matter, the legendary act of feeding a fan's fish after taking temporary shelter when his car broke down in October and not speaking ill of his exes, even on Howard Stern. “I just don’t think you need to be a dick to be a good artist," Styles told The Guardian last year.
"He makes niceness chic," Williams said, choosing an "un-edgy, totally earnest mantra" despite his rock star bonafides. "Harry Styles is the heart-eyes emoji, sprung to life." (At first, Williams says she felt peculiar fangirling a former boy-bander as a 40-something Black mom. "I wondered if I was having a midlife crisis," she told me, "but then, I was introduced to actress/producer/novelist Robinne Lee, whose brilliant novel The Idea of You, was inspired by him, and who is, herself, a 40-something Black mom, and I was like, 'Yes, I've found my people.'")
Style's beautiful soul is just one reason why I stand by my own budding fandom, even as I'm mocked by certain family members and even my six-year-old daughter for requesting t-shirts from his official store as my only Christmas gift, or vaulting myself down the Harry YouTube rabbit hole (please seek out his duet with Lizzo on "Juice" at her Miami show at the Fillmore back in January, another world ago). But it's not just that he reads Alain de Botton, writes his own music, wears insane sweaters and has a cosmic connection with Stevie Nicks. Styles also strikes me as a man uniquely suited to the moment.
In an era of grotesque, Trump-fueled toxic masculinity, the sexiest thing about Styles is that he's comfortable in his femininity. What began with his sheer blouse and single drop-earring at the 2019 Met Gala flourished in 2020 with a spate of traditionally femme fashion, including fishnets, a signature pearl necklace and a Gucci dress, as the first male to ever appear on the cover of Vogue.
Tyler Mitchell's Vogue shoot "felt significant because it's still so rare to see male celebrities challenge conventional ideals of masculinity," Liz Plank, author of For the Love of Men, told Vogue. "We still live in a culture that encourages us to protect girls from gendered expectations and stereotypes, but that gets very uncomfortable when we suggest doing the same for boys."
The way Styles dresses, the fact that he paints his nails and wears stacked heels beneath his sailor pants, continually prompts speculation about sexuality, and I can't help but notice that this doesn't trigger him, or elicit passionate defenses or assertions that he is not gay. When The Guardian asked if he'd ever been asked if he is bisexual, Styles replied, “It’s just: who cares?" He denies he's “sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting," as he puts it. "I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool... I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun."
Styles's splendor-in-the-grass moment in Vogue sparked now-infamous backlash from conservative talking head Candace Owens, who whined: "Bring back manly men." That reaction "is proof that women can be just as sexist and drunk on the patriarchal kool-aid as men," Plank said, adding that the right-wing is creating a "moral masculinity panic, this idea that men are under attack by feminism." Plank credits Styles, but also notes that "there's a courageous pack of masculinity-bending, often LGBTQ or gender non-binary men, who have been rocking these same looks for decades getting punished for it, rather than celebrated for it."
Styles has become a fashion influencer for folks across the gender spectrum, including McCall, who now feels inspired to wear her grandmother's pearls "without seeming prim and uptight," and Ryan Kazmarek, a Harry devotee and stylist at IGK Soho in New York who is still mourning the fact that coronavirus thwarted his plan to fly to Styles's now-postponed Manchester, United Kingdom shows with his boyfriend, William. Styles's fearlessness "has opened my eyes," Kazmarek told me. "I have recently been like, 'Okay, I'm going to check the women's section.'"
For his next act, Styles, who had a small but memorable role as a British soldier Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, will star in Olivia Wilde's forthcoming psychological-horror film, Don't Worry, Darling—and the photos of a dapper, suited Styles on the set has already overwhelmed Harries. "I don't even like horror movies—they literally give me nightmares—and still I am mentally handing my money over to Olivia Wilde," McCall said.

Sofia Falcone x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1512 words
Warnings: none
Summary: Sofia Falcone is back in Gotham, but she isn’t alone.
——————————————————————————————————
When Sofia told you that you’d be making an impromptu trip to Gotham City, you weren’t entirely sure what she had planned, and you didn’t think that far ahead.
...At least, not at first.
Really, you were just thrilled at the idea of getting to go somewhere other than Miami. It was a beautiful place, one that you loved, but change was always welcome in your life.
Especially if you got to take Sofia along for the ride.
It wasn’t until you actually set foot in the city you’d heard so much about that you realized what you could actually be there for.
“I’m just going to run in here really quick, I have some business to attend to” she hummed, stepping out of the sleek black car without another word, leaving you there with the driver.
You had no idea what business she could have at the GCPD but upon thinking about it, you were sure that it had something to do with her father.
It occurred to you as soon as she left that you had never heard the Don himself give permission for the two of you to leave Miami, and that was a big problem.
“Sofia, did you ask your father about all of this? Coming back and all that” you asked, as soon as she slid into the backseat beside you, that determined Falcone glare on her beautiful face.
She didn’t answer you at first, only addressing her words to the driver through the partition. You should have known that Sofia wouldn’t be upfront with you about her true plans in this place, but you always hoped she would anyway.
After all, you were her partner in all things, including life and you expected her respect. You had always given her that same courtesy, and it didn’t seem too much to ask to receive the same.
“Come on darling, you aren’t really cross with me, are you?” she teased, leaning back against the leather seat once she was sure that you were on the right route.
Of course she hadn’t told you.
If she would have mentioned her plot to reclaim Gotham for the Falcone family earlier, you or her father would have tried to stop it. Sofia knew what she was doing, she just needed to be able to prove it.
“You know how dangerous this is. Why wouldn’t you have consulted me first?” you continued, ignoring her obvious attempt to soothe you with her smile.
This was bigger than the both of you.
You understood that Sofia felt like Gotham was her birthright, especially after losing Mario, but it had to be gone about in the right way. She could get you both killed if you weren’t careful.
“I knew you’d try to stop me” she shrugged, reaching down to take your hand in her own, running her thumb over your knuckles slowly, another subtle attempt to calm your nerves.
“I have this all under control darling, you just have to trust me”
It was foolish, stupid even but you sighed, knowing that no matter what you said, Sofia was bound to do whatever she wanted. It wasn’t like you were going to leave her side either way.
“Fine, but please don’t get hurt” you urged, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of her face before relaxing beside her. Who knows, maybe Sofia really did know what she was doing.
She did have Falcone Blood running through her veins, after all.
“I wasn’t planning on it, but don’t worry about that. We have quite the adventure ahead of us” she grinned, the car coming to a stop at the perfect time, just in time to see the Falcone Mansion.
You had heard about it a lot in the time since you and Sofia had been together but never could you have imagined the splendor it truly indulged in.
The entire building was a marvel in architecture, but that wasn’t all. As soon as you crossed the threshold of the mansion, Sofia stopped you, holding her hands over your eyes.
“What are you doing-” you started, stopped immediately by the dark haired woman, tutting in your ear.
“I told you to trust me. I have a surprise for you” she urged, her voice in a soft whisper as she led you further into the home, still keeping you blind.
You had no idea what she could have had up her sleeve, but knowing Sofia, it could be anything. Frankly, you wouldn’t have been surprised to see a caged lion in the living room.
Thankfully though, when she finally did let you see, it was much more mundane than that, though not altogether unexciting.
“What is all this?” you asked, eyeing the various boxes, stacked on top of each other all around the room. You had never seen so much at one time, at least, not in a while.
The room was quiet for just a moment as Sofia let you look upon what she’d done for you.
See, when Jim Gordon came to Falcone Manor to speak to her father, Sofia knew what she had to do. What she wasn’t willing to do though was leave you in Miami while she did it.
You were the love of her life, her partner in all things and leaving you just wouldn’t do.
Still, both of your wardrobes were severely lacking in the Gotham friendly department, so she took it upon herself to go on a little shopping spree.
It was just a small token of her gratitude toward you for leaving everything behind to follow her in her venture, and not nearly as much as she wanted to give you.
...But it was a start.
Once she had it under her control, she would give you all of Gotham if you asked.
“It’s cold down here, so I bought you a few things” she shrugged, plucking one of the gift bags from the floor and holding it out to you. Though, you were too shocked to take it at first.
“A few things? Sofia-this is a whole department store” you laughed, looking around at all the things, knowing she must have spent a fortune on all of this.
Not that it seemed to phase her in the least.
“Nowhere near what you deserve, my love” she grinned, turning around toward the fireplace.
“Let’s go get cleaned up and then you can go through all this” she suggested, knowing that after your long journey, the two of you could benefit from a warm shower and a nice glass of wine.
She had been planning this for quite some time, and she wanted it to be perfect.
~
You plopped down next to Sofia on the couch, both wearing brand new silk pajamas as you relaxed. Her hair was still wet from the shower you’d shared, and you both smelled of lilac and vanilla.
By all accounts, it was the perfect way to top off an evening.
Though, the woman you loved seemed to have something on her mind.
You had been through all those bags together, those gifts she'd ordered and wrapped just for you and found that everything was perfect.
Sofia was perfectly aware of how difficult it was for you to find clothes that fit you, and in a place like Gotham, they weren't exactly the most aware of size inclusivity.
Thankfully, anything was possible with enough money and time.
For that reason alone, along with her demand for perfection and attention to detail, every single beautiful garment fit like a glove. It was like they were made for your body, and you assumed that was because they were.
You had known Sofia to spoil you in the past, frequently taking you out to nice dinners and parties on the veranda, but nothing like this. This had taken her a very long time to pull off and you just wanted to know why.
There was no special occasion that you were aware of, and you’d never missed an anniversary.
It had to be something else.
“I have to ask, what brought all this on?” you asked finally, nursing your wine glass as you did. You had been racking your brain since you got home, and you just didn’t know.
There was something going on though, you knew that for certain.
Sofia smiled, leaning her head back as she studied you. Your face was so beautiful, and you truly did make her so happy. Though, she had to admit that you knew her better than even she knew.
In her mind, this just seemed like something she did for you frequently, albeit a little extravagant. Of course, however, you were right.
Sofia’d had something in her mind as of late, and she assumed that waiting any longer wouldn’t do either of you any good.
It was time to just come out with it.
“Y/N, will you run the underworld with me?” she hummed, catching you off guard once again with the tone in her voice. Of course though, you didn’t even have to think before answering.

Wild Orchid, Daria Bagrintseva
This artwork won the International Prize 'The Best of Modern and Contemporary Artist' in 2015. One of the founders of the prize, Prof Dr Salvatore Russo says: "Her painting is full of expressive and communicative force, ir's a set of meditations on liberating function of the color and drawing, on the power of a modern and refined figurative, to achieve the desired objective. The work of Daria Bagrintseva, stron of its beautiful handwriting and the intense chromaticism, moves within channels of visual and mental suggestions." A traditional Irish band called Colcannon chose this painting for decoration of the new album. Mick Bolger, the head of yhe band, says: "We are in the process of recording our newest CD and I started looking for artwork for it this morning. The album is to be called 'Wild Orchid'. A quick Google search revealed your painting of the same name. As soon as I saw it, I knew I need go no further. 'Wild Orchid' painting belongs to the 'Miami Art Deco' series. It is a balance between figurative and abstract painting. The paintings in this set fit perfectly into both contemporary and traditional interiors. I created this series inspired by the spectacular, vivid, unusual and diverse architecture of Miami. The paintings reflect the cheerful and noisy night parties in the style of The Great Gatsby, passing among the splendor and luxury of nature in Florida, its tropical plants and flowers, colorful and noisy birds and animals. I used acrylic, gold and metallic paints, as only with them I can do to achieve the desired effect of brightness, ricnhess, color intensity and lightness. ---------- Orchids are the largest family of blooming flowers with over 25,000 species and over 100,000 varieties. They are often grown as houseplants, or added to floral displays. But, not all orchids are tropical beauties. Wild orchids grow worldwide and can be found on every continent except Antarctica. These flowers have earned the reputation as difficult to grow, probably due to their need for filtered light and high relative humidity. Many varieties, such as the moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) are surprisingly easy to grow as a houseplant. The orchid has been held in high regard since ancient times. It symbolizes: Love Beauty Fertility Refinement Thoughtfulness Charm Orchids (Orchidaceae family) earned their name from the Greek word orchis, meaning testicle. Their fleshy underground tubers were thought to resemble testicles, at least that’s what Greek botanist Theophrastos thought at the time. The phalaenopsis orchids, commonly referred to as moth orchids, earned their name from mistaken identity. When Swedish Naturalist Peter Osbeck spied them in his field glasses while visiting Java in the mid-1750s, he thought they were a cluster of moths. Although they were not officially named for another 75 years, the common name Osbeck spied them in his field glasses while visiting Java in the mid-1750s, he thought they were a cluster of moths. Although they were not officially named for another 75 years, the common name moth orchid has endured. The ancient Greeks thought orchids were a symbol of virility. In fact, they were so convinced of the connection between orchids and fertility that they believe orchids with large tuberous roots symbolized a male child, while orchids with small tubers symbolized a female child. The Aztecs reportedly mixed the vanilla orchid with chocolate to create a tasty elixir that was thought to promote power and strength. Although the Victorians didn’t use orchids as magical elixirs, they did collect and display them as a sign of luxury and a means to exhibit their refined taste. Orchid plants and flowers range in size and shape. Many grow in the understory of tropical forests, producing delicate blooms in a wide array of colors. While some are tiny plants, only a few inches tall, others like the Vanilla orchid grow on towering vines. The Vanilla orchid is native to Mesoamerica where the Totonaco Indians cultivated it. According to ancient Totonaco legend, the vanilla orchid sprung from the blood of Princess Xanat when she and her lover were beheaded for disobeying her father’s wishes. Although the Chinese have cultivated orchids for over 3,000 years, it was not until the 1600s that visitors to the Far East brought orchids to Europe. By 1802 orchids were raised from seed and by 1856, the first cultivated hybrid was developed. While all orchids symbolize love and beauty, the color of the orchid can change the intended meaning of the flower: Blue – Orchids come in every color but true blue, but there are blue tinted orchids. These orchids represent rarity Red – Red orchids symbolize passion and desire, but can also symbolize strength and courage. Pink – Pink orchids symbolize grace, joy and happiness and can also symbolize innocence and femininity. White – White orchids represent reverence and humility, innocence and purity, and elegance and beauty. Purple – Purple orchids symbolize admiration, respect, dignity and royalty. Yellow – Yellow or orchids represent friendship, joy and new beginnings. Orange – Orange orchids symbolize enthusiasm, boldness and pride. Green – Green orchids are thought to bring good fortune and blessings. They represent good health, nature and longevity. Meaningful Botanical Characteristics of the Orchid Flower In Chinese medicine, the orchid is used as an herbal remedy to ease coughs and lung diseases; treat kidney, lung and stomach deficiencies; and treat eye diseases. The fragrance of orchid flowers is used in perfumes and beauty products. The beans of the Vanilla orchid are dried and used as flavoring for sweet drinks and confections. It is a popular flavoring for ice cream, soft drinks and in cakes. The orchid flower’s message is difficult to dismiss. This exotic flower brings beauty and grace to any occasion with flowers that appear to float in the air. They add a flair for the unusual to floral bouquets, or simply used as potted plants as centerpieces during special occasions. And, as if that were not enough, orchids give the world the sweet flavor of vanilla, too. http://www.flowermeaning.com/orchid-flower-meaning/

Red Velvet Talk Stateside Plans, Friendship And 'Bad Boy' After First Solo U.S. Concert
It’s hard to imagine any other artist putting on a kaleidoscopic concert where they outrun a killer robot while singing songs that run the gamut from peppy trop house to sleek R&B. But Feb. 7 was just another day for Red Velvet — in particular, Day 1 of the K-pop girl group’s first-ever U.S. tour, fittingly called REDMARE.
They made their first stop at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, home to the People’s Choice Awards — where K-pop’s presence has been felt over the past year. Red Velvet is among the K-pop acts leading the charge of girl groups trekking across the States this year. The trend follows a nearly three-year drought in Stateside tours by female idols while boy bands continued to thrive. So, it feels right that these five-year veterans of the industry can finally shine on American stages.
The girl group has previously performed short sets at the Hollywood Bowl and KCON — but American Reveluvs (their fandom name) finally got the two-and-a-half hour rollercoaster ride of their dreams. For the first time, the full spectrum of Red Velvet’s particular brand of sensory overload became an IRL experience on this side of the world.
But don’t take their U.S. promotions as a sign that they’re aiming for a Western crossover. “We don’t really have a goal for the U.S. market,” Wendy told Forbes in English over the phone hours before their Day 2 performance. “We get loved by so many fans, we just want to spend some time and perform for them. And I hope we can deliver our message through our songs.”
They weren’t kidding about being loved by their fans. As they played the mid-sized theater with a capacity of nearly 3,000 seats, the deafening cheers reached decibels that often drowned out the music. Leader Irene even said there were times when she couldn’t hear her in-ear monitor. But that didn’t stop them from bringing down the house.
The night opened with the fizzy 8bit bop “Russian Roulette.” The girls ran through plenty of hit singles like “Red Flavor,” “Power Up” and “Peek-A-Boo.” Later on, they unveiled their first live performance the English version of camp extravaganza “RBB.” Then, of course, they came out swinging with last year’s critically acclaimed “girl crush” anthem, “Bad Boy.”
It just so happens that the members have a lot of thoughts on why “Bad Boy” made such a huge impact. “The lyrics and the concept I think really resonated with the fans,” Seulgi said. “Most fans were used to seeing the more ‘sweet and lovely’ side of Red Velvet, but I think when they saw the more ‘girl crush’ side of us, they thought it was really fresh and different from our usual concepts.”
Meanwhile, Wendy points to the R&B song’s retro feel as the highlight. “I watched this video of how they were making ‘Bad Boy,’” she said, referring to the song’s Grammy-winning producers, The Stereotypes. “And the vibe — it was the ‘80s and ‘90s in the U.S. music style. So then I guess maybe people like that part of it too.”
She also added that the warm reception in the West encouraged the group to put in some extra work: “Because our ‘Bad Boy’ was loved by so many people, we decided to make it into an English version.”
But they reinforced their reputation as B-side queens by dedicating over half of their set to deeper cuts like “Look,” “Hit That Drum” and “Blue Lemonade.” The setlist spanned their career with a lot of love given to last year’s Summer Magic EP.
Cohesion has never been the point of their discography, but they managed to mesh all of their disparate concepts into a singular (and gloriously bizarre) narrative all the same. They’ve built a career off the push and pull of their contrasting bubbly Red and mature Velvet sides, which seem to bleed into each other more and more.
The most striking example was when the typically saccharine “Ice Cream Cake” opened the horror-themed section of the concert. The once-speedy BPM slowed to a demonic dirge as the members transformed the choreography into a creepy doll dance.
The girls have a positive attitude about their conceptual shapeshifting. “It’s really fun, and I think a huge part of the fun is us really being able to research and delve deep into whatever concept we’re pulling off next,” Seulgi said. “We’ll look at other artists and see how they pull off a certain concept, and think about how we’d make it our own. This whole process had really made us grow and mature over the years. It makes us want to continuously try out new concepts.”
When asked how Red Velvet maintains their group identity while showing so many different sides of themselves, Wendy said: “We just focus on our name, Red Velvet, and our style. And we believe in ourselves that we can do lots of different genres of songs. And we just stick with our belief.”
REDMARE’s zany storyline was told through short clips (which fans call “VCRs”) that played during every outfit change. Basically, an evil robot named Rêve tormented the girls through various hijinx — changing their sizes via magic potions, siccing poachers after them in a jungle and putting them through a haunted house maze. While the visual splendor gave way to head-scratching over the plot, this vivid and absurd tale managed to be both colorful and dark, just like Red Velvet.
Later on in the show, the members revealed that Seulgi — who’s known for her drawing talents — contributed to the design of the maniacal machine. As Yeri put it during the show, “Seulgi is [an] artist.” The latter member gave the robot its name: Rêve, meaning “dream” in French.
The gender balance of the audience was slightly weighted toward women, even though plenty of men waved their own Red Velvet lightsticks. This is a big deal in an industry where a group’s key demographic primarily consists of the opposite gender.
When asked about the girl group’s appeal to women, the members chalk it up to their themes of female empowerment. “On our album RBB, Really Bad Boy, there are lots of songs talking about self-confidence,” Wendy said. “So when you listen to it, it gives you the confidence to do something.”
The quintet has taken on fiercer concepts over the past year. In the K-pop fandom, the music videos for “Bad Boy” and “RBB” evoke a highly specific yet expansive concept called “girl crush” — which ultimately boils down to relatability and female bonds.
“I think in comparison to other groups,” Yeri said, “Red Velvet is known to be more carefree and showcase different sides of ourselves, which is what I think fans might find more charming — or [they] feel closer to us because they can feel our friendship in the way we interact with each other. I think this definitely makes it easier for us to feel closer to our fans.”

😘 - from Sonny!
😘 - from Sonny! (Kiss from Sonny)
The summons to come and testify on an old case in New York, while typically warmly received, had come at the most inopportune moment. But Tubbs could not refuse the orders without suffering ill-consequences. So it is with a heavy heart she packs her bags. The departure seemed to take an eternity. Raquel loathe as she was to confess it outwardly, found her heart sinking as the sunny palms of Miami vanish into the tranquil sea of blue-grey sky.
She unfolds a travel magazine in her lap, trying to take her mind off of her partner. But thoughts of him do not easily evaporate. They linger stubbornly in every corner of her mind. In fact, when she reads an outrageous article, she turns to the guy in the seat next to her. “Crockett! Would you look….” the rest of the sentence dies on the edge of her painted lips when she realizes that she is talking to a complete stranger. Embarrassment settles upon her face and she slumps downwards in the chair to endure the rest of the three hour flight in a brooding silence. Being away from him felt so unnatural. In spite of returning to her home turf, she finds herself counting down the hours and minutes until returning to him.
Three weeks alone feels like an agonizing eternity for the very social Tubbs. Hours upon hours are spent in the stuffy confines of the courtroom listening to the prosecution and defense teams argue their relatively petty points. Then the two forces seemed to converge on her as she took the hot seat. She answered all their endless inquiries with tireless devotion. Although, some of them in her opinion were greatly unnecessary. However, Ricki didn’t dare say as much for fear it would add another day of questioning to her misery.
When the case had finally finished, Tubbs was anxious to get back home. At her hotel, she had relatively little to do for she had never truly unpacked all the way. Taking all of her clothes out of the bag would have made the stay in New York City feel too permanent than she cared for.
Thick mats of foamy fog clung to every skyscraper and road as Tubbs hailed a taxi the morning of her departure. The sun, like a terrific globe of honey orange and red danced between buildings off and on. That is, when it saw fit to announce its presence before once more concealing itself into the blanket of cover. This, Tubbs felt, was a beautiful image to remember her former home by. The splendor of twilight was fracturing into the richness of day as Tubbs seated herself on the plane.
The plane could not be boarded fast enough. Her gaze soon fell from the window of the plane to her wrist watch. Its only about nine in the morning now. She wouldn’t get back to Miami till sometime around noon. She settles into the relative comfort of her seat, pulling a picture of Sonny that she had smuggled into her luggage out. It was fading a bit now and the creases ever deepened every time she folded it and returned it to her pocket. There were at least a million things she’d like to tell him about everything she had seen or done. Even more pressing, Tubbs wanted to hear everything that Sonny would have to say. In the worst of ways, Ricki wanted to jump right back into her life at Vice as though she had never truly departed.
A nosy old woman next to her began to make inquiries as to the photograph. “Who is he to you?” She prods, much to Tubbs’s concern.
It only takes Ricki a moment to softly respond. “Sonny? He is my partner, my world, and the center of my everything. I miss the hell outta him.” Then after a brief moment she confides, “I love him more than my own life.”
“Does he know?” The silver-crowned lady prompts.
Tubbs’s eyes grow wide for she knows not how to answer the question. “I… I’d hope so.” She murmurs. Internally, she resolves to tell him the minute she sets foot upon the St. Vitus Dance. She has three hours to agonize over how she’d inform him. Thanks ol’ lady for turning the pressure up a notch. The picture is reverently returned back to the pocket over her heart.
Before she knows it, the tires of the Eastern Airlines plane hit the tarmac. Gradually, the looming airport pulls into view. A semblance of relief washes over her shoulders. In the gangway the warmth of the Miami afternoon met her skin. It was a pleasant sensation given the relative absence of the sun in New York.
Tubbs weaves her way through the amassing people at the gate. Her purposeful steps are focused towards the baggage claim although, her eyes were focused on the people drifting in every which way about the corridor. There are business men and women, various tourists lugging children going in different directions, and dozen or so shady characters leaning against the building’s pillars. The air itself is heady with chaos, but it is not entirely unwelcome for Tubbs finds herself thriving on it.
A figure adorned in nearly all white causes her to stop short of the luggage claim carousel. Her evergreen and coffee hues linger uncertainly upon him. Was she seeing things? No. She couldn’t be. Tubbs forces herself to blink - once - twice- three times and still he does not fade. “Sonny!” She murmurs whilst still far off. Her carry-on is abruptly forgotten about and it collapses to the airport floor. Ricki is no longer worried about someone making off with her belongings. All thoughts of them are discarded as she races forward, gently pushing a couple stagnated people out of her way.
“Crockett!” Tubbs exclaims through her tears. She had NEVER been more pleased to see anyone in her life! Her arms are quickly thrown about his neck. In a silvery sotto voce she murmurs into the crook of his neck, “fancy meeting you here, pal! God, I’ve missed you!” Tubbs pulls briefly away to observe him. “Let me look at you. Have you been eating? Taking care of yourself? We’re you waiting long? Did you…”
However, all of her inquiries are silenced by the sensation of his velvety lips pressed against her own. The breath hitches in her throat and her eyes fall closed in an attempt to savor the affection. Her heart tingles with a sudden rush of enthusiasm. Its beat starts skipping and thundering as if, gifting Sonny an approving applause. “I,” she hums not allowing much distance to form between their lips. Her fingers first lift to the corner of his jaw before daring to entwine gingerly with his glorious hair. Unspoken thoughts trail off briefly and vanish into thin air as she presses her lips back to his. This second kiss is slow, languid but never-the-less still sizzling with passion. Tubbs presses herself flat against his sturdy chest. “You know something, pal?” She asks, her gaze drifting up and down his incredible figure. “Its good to be home.” Correction. “Its even better to be here in your arms.” After all, there is more than one way for her to say I love you. Tubbs sure hopes he is good at reading between the lines.
“How about a quick date before we get back to work? I hate to say it, but I’m starving.”
#mellowoutpal#mellowoutpal: sure beats the hell out of any ride at coney island#sorry this isn't the most impressive thing I've sent your way. I tried#tw: long reply#once again you get a novel#if you need me to change anything- let me know

2018 Movie Odyssey Awards
And that’s it folks. That’s all the posts they wrote on the 2018 Movie Odyssey. All the films featured here were films that I saw for the first time in their entirety over the last calendar year (the entire list of which you can see here). Except for the Worst Picture category at the bottom, this entire post is a roll call of cinematic excellence. You can’t go wrong with the winners and nominees in these many categories. Submitted for your consumption and reflection...
Best Pictures (I name ten, and never distinguish one above the other nine)
The Blue Angel (1930, Germany)
Charade (1963)
8½ (1963, Italy)
The Heiress (1949)
A Man Escaped (1956, France)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Pyaasa (1957, India)
Roma (2018, Mexico)
Shoplifters (2018, Japan)
Stalker (1979, Soviet Union)
This is the first Movie Odyssey Best Picture lineup without an entry from either the 1990s or 2000s. It is the first Best Picture lineup since 2015 without a silent film being among the top ten. But what is not here should detract from the excellence of what is here. There are no 9/10s here... The Blue Angel, Charade, and Pyaasa received 9.5/10s; everything else received a 10/10. From the romantic antics in Charade (as part-spy thriller) and The Philadelphia Story; lust masquerading for love in The Blue Angel and 8½; standing resolutely on one’s own self-worth in The Heiress and Pyaasa; the desperation of A Man Escaped and Stalker; and the modern instant classics of Roma and Shoplifters, this is the best Best Picture slate in the last three years.
Best Comedy
Blondie (1938)
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Incredibles 2 (2018)
My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999, Japan)
Overboard (1987)
The Philadelphia Story
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Stowaway (1936)
The Whole Town’s Talking (1935)
Wonder Man (1945)
It didn’t make me laugh the hardest (that goes to Incredibles 2 and Spider-Verse), but The Philadelphia Story managed to reaffirm what is most important in loving someone and seeing in others what isn’t necessarily the most visible thing. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, and Ruth Hussey are an amazing ensemble. Close behind are those two aforementioned animated movies and another animated peer, My Neighbors the Yamadas. The Whole Town’s Talking also was in the mix.
Best Musical
Girl Crazy (1943)
Grease (1978)
Moon Over Miami (1941)
The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968)
Pete’s Dragon (1977)
Pyaasa
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
South Pacific (1958)
A Star Is Born (2018)
Stowaway
This category favors musicals that are original, not adaptations. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers would never be made today, because no one would get the satire for its gendered misbehavior. But with its incredible musical score, outstanding choreography, and appealing performances despite a brow-raising plot, it is by far the best musical I saw this year for the first time. Girl Crazy, Family Band, and Pyaasa would have been next up.
Best Animated Feature
The Cat Returns (2002, Japan)
Incredibles 2
Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017, Japan)
Mirai (2018, Japan)
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Perfect Blue (1997, Japan)
Pom Poko (1994, Japan)
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
The Wacky World of Mother Goose (1967)
There was a lot of separation from the top films and the bottom films in this category. The excellent family comedy My Neighbors the Yamadas sends the late Isao Takahata a winner (its comedy entirely based on Takahata’s strengths in observing human behavior), in what was also the last Ghibli film I needed to see to complete the studio’s filmography. Close behind were Perfect Blue and the best animated feature of 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Best Documentary
The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years (2016)
Don’t Look Back (1967)
Free Solo (2018)
Pick of the Litter (2018)
RBG (2018)
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
It was the cinéma vérité of Don’t Look Back versus the emotional power of Won’t You Be My Neighbor? in the end. And at the end, what appealed to me most was the latter. Mr. Rogers was a part of my childhood, and I’m only learning more about him and the lessons he imparted to all his neighbors in my mid-twenties. I never imagined I would be revisiting him now, but here we are! The harrowing (at least, in the final half-hour) Free Solo - dont watch if you’re afraid of heights - was solidly in third in this category.
Best Non-English Language Film
The Blue Angel, Germany
8½, Italy
Floating Weeds (1959), Japan
Gojira (1954), Japan
A Man Escaped, France
My Neighbors the Yamadas, Japan
Pyaasa, India
Roma, Mexico
Shoplifters, Japan
Stalker, Soviet Union
With four entries, this was Japan’s to lose. In what was essentially a toss-up between Federico Fellini and Andrei Tarkovsky, it was the former’s film that will this category for me. I first saw a part of 8½ almost ten years ago now, deleting the recording after realizing there was something about the film that I, as a teenager, could not get. There is only one movie you need to watch, probably, about artist’s block, and that’s 8½. Considered just after that and Stalker are Roma, Pyaasa, and Shoplifters. Gojira - best known to all as Godzilla - was not expected to be here because I once saw the American cut/dub of the film (which cuts a lot of the tragic and allegorical elements). There is no better monster movie than the original Godzilla.
Best Silent Film
Camille (1921)
Caught in a Cabaret (1914 short)
It (1927)
Mabel’s Blunder (1914 short)
Mare Nostrum (1926)
Piccadilly (1929)
Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1927)
West Point (1927)
I honestly did not see enough silent films last year. But that doesn’t take away from how good West Point is - as a drama, a comedy, a romance, and a sports film. Edward Sedgwick’s film juggles a lot of hats, and by sheer charm of its performances, manages to find the right balance. Trailing West Point were Piccadilly and a strong adaptation of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Personal Favorite Film
Charade
Christopher Robin (2018)
A Corny Concerto (1943 short)
Gojira
Incredibles 2
The Journey of Natty Gann (1985)
My Neighbors the Yamadas
The Philadelphia Story
The Whole Town’s Talking
Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
1) The Philadelphia Story; 2) Won’t You Be My Neighbor?; 3) The Journey of Natty Gann; 4) Charade; 5) Incredibles 2; 6) My Neighbors the Yamadas; 7) Gojira; 8) The Whole Town’s Talking; 9) Christopher Robin; 10) A Corny Concerto
You folks have no idea how many times my top three switched places while considering this. So much to love about them all. Since I haven’t mentioned Natty Gann yet in my comments, let me do so here. Sometimes, I’m in the mood for a simple, but beautifully shot Disney film out in the wilderness. Meredith Salenger as the title character must make her way from Chicago to Washington state after an unfortunate accident where she is separated from her father. I just adore the nature shots, Natty’s wolfdog companion, and James Horner’s ridiculously beautiful score.
Best Director
Robert Bresson, A Man Escaped
Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
George Cukor, The Philadelphia Story
Stanley Donen, Charade
Guru Dutt, Pyaasa
Federico Fellini, 8½
Hirokazu Koreeda, Shoplifters
Michael Powell, 49th Parallel (1941)
Andrei Tarkovsky, Stalker
William Wyler, The Heiress
A bit of an upset here, but my goodness it takes incredible skill to pull off such social commentary with the amount of artistry Pyaasa does. Ambitious in structure, aesthetic, and thematic approach, it is Guru Dutt who will take this home. Next up would have been Tarkovsky and Fellini.
Best Acting Ensemble
All This, and Heaven Too (1940)
Crossfire (1947)
Cry, the Beloved Country (1951)
The Heiress
Imitation of Life (1934)
A Man for All Seasons (1966)
The Philadelphia Story
The Post (2017)
Shoplifters
Splendor in the Grass (1961)
An excellent set of nominees for Acting Ensemble, with few weak links among them all. They might not be the biggest ensemble, but pretty much everyone is pitch perfect in Imitation of Life - essentially bolstered by its supporting actresses in Louise Beavers and Fredi Washington. The Philadelphia Story in a close second.
Best Actor
Cary Grant, Charade
Emil Jannings, The Blue Angel
Burt Lancaster, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957)
Canada Lee, Cry, the Beloved Country
James B. Lowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Marcello Mastroianni, 8½
Ganjirô Nakamura, Floating Weeds
Sidney Poitier, A Warm December (1973)
Paul Scofield, A Man for All Seasons
Jack Webb, The D.I. (1957)
Paul Scofield, as Sir Thomas More, is a man on a mission - a mission to stop Henry VIII to stop screwing things up even more. Reprising his role from the stage, to me Scofield is clearly the winner as he imbues More with incredible authority yet knowing vulnerability. An astounding, career performance from Scofield is trailed only by Cary Grant and Marcello Mastroianni.
Best Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma
Bette Davis, All This, and Heaven Too
Marlene Dietrich, The Blue Angel
Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade (2018)
Olivia de Havilland, The Heiress
Audrey Hepburn, Charade
Katharine Hepburn, The Philadelphia Story
Waheeda Rehman, Pyaasa
Anna May Wong, Piccadilly
Natalie Wood, Splendor in the Grass
Olivia de Havilland’s growth throughout The Heiress is downright incredible to watch. How she asserts herself in the final minutes is the culmination of all that has happened up until that point - a film about a woman who finds the strength within herself to state her clearest intentions as pointedly as possible without breaking societal expectations. Just trailing are Yalitza Aparicio (please nominate her for this year’s Academy Awards) and the Hepburns.
Best Supporting Actor
Montgomery Clift, The Heiress
Sam Elliott, A Star Is Born
Rodney A. Grant, Dances with Wolves (1990)
Graham Greene, Dances with Wolves
Bob Odenkirk, The Post
Sidney Poitier, Cry, the Beloved Country
Anthony Quinn, Warlock (1959)
Mickey Rooney, The Black Stallion (1979)
Robert Ryan, Crossfire
Takashi Shimura, Gojira
I don’t know folks, this category seems to like villains. And Robert Ryan’s psychopathic, anti-Semitic murderer is as frightening as a film noir villain can get. Considering what I had seen from Ryan up to this point, there was no preparing me for that. Runners-up include Graham Greene (of Oneida descent), Sidney Poitier, Mickey Rooney, and Takashi Shimura.
Best Supporting Actress
Louise Beavers, Imitation of Life
Stockard Channing, Grease
Wendy Hiller, A Man for All Seasons
Ruth Hussey, The Philadelphia Story
Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread (2017)
Sandra Milo, 8½
Anne Revere, National Velvet (1944)
Millicent Simmonds, A Quiet Place (2018)
Fredi Washington, Imitation of Life
Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians
No one could really touch Paul Scofield in Best Actor. Likewise, no one could touch Louise Beavers in Imitation of Life. Yes, Beavers’ role in the film is that of a stereotypical “mammy” at first glance. But looking deeper - and with a major assist from an extremely thoughtful screenplay - Beavers is allowed to give this role so much more than many of her fellow black actresses were ever permitted to have. In a film on racial identity and belonging, she is what makes Imitation of Life tick. The distant challengers were co-star Fredi Washington, Lesley Manville, and Sandra Milo.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Robert Alan Arthur, Warlock
Robert Bolt, A Man for All Seasons
Ruth and Augustus Goetz, The Heiress
Sadayuki Murai, Perfect Blue
Alan Paton and John Howard Lawson, Cry, the Beloved Country
Casey Robinson, All This, and Heaven Too
Donald Ogden Stewart and Waldo Salt, The Philadelphia Story
Arkadi Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky, Stalker
Jo Swerling and Robert Riskin, The Whole Town’s Talking

Walter Scharf, Hans Christian Andersen (1952)
Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band
Louis Silvers, Stowaway
George Stoll, Girl Crazy
It is one of the few wholly original musicals here. And though its score is not perfect, its highs are some of the best 1950s MGM has to offer.
Best Original Score (eleven nominees because this year’s slate was way too hard to decide on... even the ones I cut)
John Barry, Dances with Wolves
Aaron Copland, The Heiress
James Horner, The Journey of Natty Gann
Akira Ifukube, Gojira
Henry Mancini, Charade
Sergei Prokofiev, Alexander Nevsky
Nino Rota, 8½
Miklós Rózsa, Quo Vadis
Max Steiner, All This, and Heaven Too
Dimitri Tiomkin, The Alamo (1960)
Ralph Vaughan Williams, 49th Parallel
This was the most difficult category to call this year. This was the strongest collection of Best Original Score nominees in a few years, with arguments that could easily be made for John Barry, Akira Ifukube, Nino Rota, Max Steiner, and Dimitri Tiomkin. In the end, it was between the three composers not known for film scores, but their classical music: Aaron Copland, Sergei Prokofiev, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Prokofiev took third place as I found that the placement of music in Alexander Nevsky paled a bit compared to The Heiress and 49th Parallel. In the end, I went with the Englishman because his distinct sound has never really been replicated for movies, and Vaughan Williams’ works are less available in North America. There are other Copland scores - and some that I feel more strongly about. So in this titanic battle of film score composers, congratulations to Ralph Vaughan Williams!

All films in this category are declared winners. It would be unfair to compare a silent film to the newest Mission: Impossible film, so this is based on visual effects achievement in their respective time.
