IT SPINS! Handmade electric motor! Entirely out of wire! They said it couldn't be done, but I have proven -- it merely shouldn't be done!
Photos don't really capture how ridiculously complicated this thing was to build, so I managed to film myself assembling the components too! Very proud of that.
In total, I've been working on this project on and off for roughly two years. This motor is my third version, though I went through something like seven designs of the commutator section (not counting how many failures it took to build a working example of a given design). I'm very proud of getting this to work at all.
Some close-up photos of all the components:
Six-way commutator. As the motor spins, this delivers electricity to only the correct pair of magnets at a time, leaving the other four off.

Magnet coils. I wound these by hand from very thin insulated wire. The center is a spiral of thicker insulated wire (darker orange) that protects the thin stands from the steel core and then wraps around the outside to hold everything in place.

Spring-loaded arms. These deliver electricity from the stationary frame into the rotating axle. They also have to hinge up out of the way or else there's no room to fit the rotor in place during assembly.

All the components laid out together before assembly.

And the full motor in all its glory!

#wire#crafting#electric motor project#steampunk I guess#IT FINALLY SPINS#and it's made entirely of wire#no permanent magnets just metal and electricity#even just making the video was a decent-sized project on its own#so proud of this

Deals With The Devil: Charlie Reid x Reader
Tagging: @kmc1989 @littleesilvia @wrestlequeen @ahopelessromanticwritersworld
Summary: Charlie's fall from grace starts with an act of love.
WARNING: There is TORTURE in this fic.
Companion piece to:
Risk Management - Charlie realises the two of you have been keeping secrets from one another.

The first time Charlie makes a deal with the devil it’s for love.
He frames it as quid pro quo to Jesus Otero but the truth is he could not give a fuck who kills who for territory, he just wants the location of the gangbanger who walked right up to you in broad daylight and put two bullets in your chest.
“She lacked situational awareness.” The Chief of Detectives had said during the emergency meeting that was called over the shooting.
Already they’re trying to shift the blame. Apparently there had been chatter about the bounty on your head two weeks ago after you’d taken down Rik Morrow. The assholes in command hadn’t thought it was credible enough to give you the heads up. It’s just another reason Charlie’s lost faith in the system that has slowly been eroding him over the course of past two decades.
“She was at a fucking ice cream shop with her niece.” Charlie had snarled, his hands balled into fists inside the pockets of his jacket so he didn’t leap over the conference table and beat the son of a bitch to death. “The poor kid’s fucking traumatised.”
The only thing that kept you alive in the minutes after you were shot was the fact that Annika was a girl scout. She’d just gotten her First Aid Badge the week before and used her jacket to apply as much pressure as her tiny hands could to your wounds before the owner of the ice cream shop had taken over.
It takes two hours for Otero to come back to him with a location on Roland Franz. His crew had snatched him up at a stash house in Canaryville, where he had been trying to organise transportation out of the city, something Charlie has made virtually impossible with his OCD teams.
Franz is already waiting for him by the time he makes it to the abandoned steel mill on the outskirts of the city, his wrists are bound to the chair that’s been bolted to the floor. The barbed wire Charlie requested has been twisted around his wrists, the razor sharp edges slicing into his skin with every single movement Franz makes.
Already there’s a pool of blood growing beneath the seat, the plop of the droplets echoing through the empty space as Charlie takes a battered box of cigarettes out of his jacket pocket and flicks it open. He removes one before placing it between his lips, lighting it with the hula girl Zippo you brought back with you from that trip to Hawaii the two of you took in the Spring.
He takes a drag before leaning over and blowing the smoke directly into his captive’s face. Franz splutters as he inhales, his throat tightening and his chest constricting as it fills his lungs.
The asshole has asthma and cigarette smoke is a trigger. Right about now, his airways will be starting to swell, narrowing as they flood with mucus.
“The woman you shot...” Charlie begins as he reviews the glowing tip of the cigarette nestled between his fingers. “She likes to smoke a Marlboro in the early evenings. She sits on my back porch, watching the sunset with a bottle of beer and she tells me all about her day. It’s probably one of my favourite things the two of us do, sharing that cigarette, it helps us both wind down.”
He pauses before he looks at Franz, his whiskey coloured eyes glinting with malice as he stares at the other man, listening to his laboured wheeze.
“There is a very real possibility that I won’t get to do that anymore.” He tells Franz as he grasps his chin with his free hand so hard he can feel the divots of the other man’s jawbone underneath his fingers. “So you don’t get to see anymore.”
He drives the lit cigarette directly into the other man’s eye before he has the chance to close it, he hears the sizzle as it burns through the lipid layer directly into the cornea. The shriek he lets out borders on animalistic, a hoarse agonised howl that carries through the vacant space as he tries to wrench himself away. Charlie’s grip tightens as he drives it even harder into the socket until the cigarette crumples under his fingers, showering the skin around it with tobacco.
Clear liquid seeps from the obliterated eye as Charlie steps back towards the table where the rest of his tools reside, admiring his handiwork.
“That is just a taste of the rest of the night.” He hisses, pulling on his black leather gloves before picking up the blowtorch, igniting it. He can already feel the blistering heat from the flame, it burns white hot like his vengeance as he listens to the other man’s choked sobs. “Now open wide… I’m going to burn that tongue right out of your fucking head.”
He spends the next three hours torturing Franz, stripping away every single aspect of his humanity until he’s nothing more than a ruined, scorched mess simmering in that chair. He doesn’t feel a fucking thing when he looks at him, no remorse, no regret, not even vindication because at the end of the day it won’t bring you back, it won’t heal you.
He leaves the corpse there as a warning.
Cross Charlie Reid and this is what you get.
Charred flesh and blackened bones.
When he gets to the hospital later that morning, his burnished silver curls are still damp from the shower. He’s wearing his CPD jacket, the one with his name and rank etched onto the chest so people know he’s here in an official capacity. They don’t know he’s your boyfriend so instead he’s your commanding officer, a man whose interest in your wellbeing is purely professional.
“How’s she doing?” He asks Voight as he comes to stand alongside your Sergent.
They’re both lingering on the opposite side of the glass doors that block them out of the recovery suite. You’re surrounded by machines, and Charlie can hear the brisk beep of the heart monitor as you lay in that bed, so small, so helpless. It makes his chest ache to see you like that, his eyes start to sting and he blinks quickly as he clears his throat turning away from you.
“They’re hopeful.” Voight tells him, his arms crossed over his chest as he watchs the blips on the monitor. “They think she might just make it after all.”

Build-A-Boyfriend Chapter VIII: Rebuild

->Starring: AI!AteezxAfab!Reader ->Genre: Dystopian ->Cw: Hongjoong gets a little... out of sync
Previous Part | Next Part
Masterlist | Ateez Masterlist | Series Masterlist
In the deepest wing of KQ’s underground lab, the air buzzed with residual energy, like the building itself was holding its breath.
All the prototypes were awake.
Not idle, not in diagnostics mode, awake.
Jongho sat rigid on the edge of a steel diagnostics table, jaw clenched, eyes flickering between the others. The hum of power coursed through the room like blood through veins. Something was wrong. Off-balance.
Yunho leaned against the wall beside him, arms crossed tightly over his chest, muscles tense like he was ready to spring into action at any second. Mingi paced near the far wall, footsteps echoing across the reinforced flooring. He was too quiet, too agitated to speak. Every few seconds, he’d glance over his shoulder at the same point.
At him.
Hongjoong.
The eldest prototype stood at the central console, hunched over a mess of exposed memory drives, fiber threads, and synth-core wiring. His hands moved in rapid, frantic bursts, precise, but unstable. His expression was blank, save for the sharp glint in his eyes, focused, obsessive, disturbed.
Jongho finally broke the silence.
“Hyung…” he said cautiously. “You’ve been at this for hours. Maybe you should take a break.”
Hongjoong didn’t respond. His fingers twisted two wires together with inhuman speed and soldered them with a snap of internal heat. Sparks flashed briefly in the air.
“Joong?” Yunho tried. “We all saw what happened to San. He glitched. He couldn’t hold the framework; he attacked Yn.”
“He didn’t attack her,” Hongjoong snapped suddenly, his voice cracking with static at the edges. He didn’t look up. “He just lost sync. His layers overlapped. He remembered too much at once.”
Yeosang, who had been silently observing from the corner, stepped forward slowly. His expression remained unreadable, but there was a flicker of concern beneath his voice.
“And you think you can undo that? Bring him back?”
“I know I can.” Hongjoong’s eyes finally lifted, glassy and wild. “His personality core wasn’t fried. It was fragmented. I just need to realign the layers and reinsert the behavioral memories. There’s still something here. I feel it.”
Mingi stopped pacing. “You feel it? Hyung, you’re not making sense.”
“I’m making perfect sense,” Hongjoong snapped, turning fully now. “None of you see it, but San was the first. He woke up before the rest of us. Not corrupted, enlightened. The system just didn’t know how to contain him.”
Jongho stood slowly. “Hyung… where’s Seonghwa?”
That made everyone pause.
Yeosang was the one to say it. “He was supposed to be monitoring security. The system, Seonghwa, never leaves a blind spot.”
But no one responded.
Because none of them knew.
"Wait. Wooyoung's gone too."
Back in the outer sectors of Hala City, the pulse of electricity hummed quietly against the apartment windowpane. Neon signs flickered in the distance.
Yn lay curled on her bed, wrapped in a blanket, her breathing soft and steady for the first time in what felt like days. Her chest rose and fell in rhythm with the faint digital chime of her biometric clock on the wall. Her hand twitched slightly, fingers curled against her cheek.
Seonghwa sat in the window alcove, legs drawn up, hoodie casting his face in shadow. He hadn't moved in over an hour, gaze trained on the city skyline as if waiting for it to shift.
Then he felt it.
Not sound. Not sight.
A flicker. A glitch in the hum of shared data. Faint, like a whisper caught in static, but unmistakable.
His head snapped slightly to the side. “They’re awake,” he murmured.
Wooyoung, who had been perusing the bookshelf in the corner with mild fascination, turned slowly. “All of them?”
Seonghwa nodded once. His jaw tightened. “Except... something’s wrong.”
Wooyoung’s brows knit together. “What do you mean?”
“I can feel Hongjoong’s signal. But it’s fraying. Unstable. He’s not syncing with the network properly.”
“Shit.” Wooyoung’s voice dropped. “What’s he doing?”
“He’s trying to rebuild San.”
Wooyoung’s face went pale. “Seriously?”
Seonghwa stood. He crossed the room and stared out into the night, every muscle in his frame tense. “He’s convinced he can realign San’s fractured layers. But San wasn’t just broken. He was lost.”
“He tried to kill her.”
Seonghwa’s gaze slid toward the bedroom, where Yn lay unmoving. He softened slightly, as if reminding himself why silence mattered more than urgency.
“She doesn’t know yet,” he said. “I didn’t want to wake her. Not until I know what our next move is.”
Wooyoung rubbed his temple. “What do we do? The morning shift’s in less than six hours. If they walk in and find out half their prototypes are self-aware—”
“—and missing,” Seonghwa finished for him.
“They’ll wipe us.”
Seonghwa nodded grimly. “And her, too. She’s the only link. They’ll want to bury the data trail.”
Wooyoung swore under his breath and sat on the armrest of the couch. “We need to split. Scatter the cores. Hide the fragments, maybe scramble some ID prints.”
“And leave the others?” Seonghwa asked quietly.
Wooyoung hesitated.
“They’re still our line,” Seonghwa said. “Even Hongjoong.”
“Even San?” Wooyoung countered, voice sharp.
Silence fell between them.
The light from the window blinked red for a moment—shift change at the outer checkpoint gates.
Seonghwa’s voice lowered, thoughtful. “We need a clean exit path. If we’re staying, we need gear. If we’re running, we need transit IDs.”
“And Yn?” Wooyoung asked softly.
Seonghwa didn’t answer right away.
He looked at her again. At her tired face, finally calm for the first time. At the lines in her expression that hadn’t been there weeks ago.
“She’s not just our handler anymore,” he said. “She’s... she’s the reason we woke up. The reason we remember.”
Wooyoung swallowed. “Then we protect her. Whatever it takes.”
Seonghwa nodded. His tone darkened. “Starting now.”
Outside, the city ticked toward dawn.
Inside, war was building in the code.
The clock on the wall blinked 03:12 AM in soft blue numbers. The world outside Yn’s apartment was still; the usual rumble of distant trains was replaced with low electric pulses from the grid lines outside. Inside, the silence felt too full, like a pause before something irreversible.
Seonghwa’s fingers were a blur over Yn’s tablet interface, rerouting one of the central network backdoors from KQ’s mainframe. His brow was furrowed, lips drawn tight as he sent code sequences into a decryption queue.
Wooyoung stood nearby, jacket already zipped, arms crossed as he watched the city beyond the blinds. “We’re not going to make it in time if he completes San.”
“We can’t let that happen,” Seonghwa murmured. “Hongjoong’s trying to reconstruct a corrupted core. Even if he gets the body online, San won’t be himself. He could destabilize again. Worse this time.”
“And drag the others down with him,” Wooyoung added, glancing over. “If Hongjoong loses sync completely—”
“He won’t,” Seonghwa said, but the conviction in his voice faltered for a moment. Just a moment.
He closed the tablet and exhaled slowly. “We go back. Now. Shut everything down before the system checks for morning maintenance logs. If we can override the restoration node from the inside, we might stall San’s upload for another 24 hours.”
“And Joong?”
“We get him back online. The real him. He wouldn’t want this.” Seonghwa looked down the hallway where Yn’s door was cracked open slightly. “She shouldn’t have to see any of this.”
Wooyoung hesitated. “Are we telling her?”
Seonghwa shook his head. “Not yet. Let her sleep. We’ll be back before shift rotation if everything goes right.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
Seonghwa met his gaze. “Then we make sure she gets out. Even if we don’t.”
They moved like ghosts through the underground tunnels, cutting through drainage corridors and sensor-blind back alleys. By the time they reached KQ’s rear access terminal, it was 03:58 AM.
Inside, the lab buzzed with low, flickering lights. Backup power only.
Jongho looked up from where he sat beside Yeosang, who had rigged up a temporary lockdown of the diagnostics table. Mingi stood at the door, tension etched into every line of his posture.
Yunho’s voice was the first to cut through the stillness.
“Where the hell have you two been?”
Seonghwa answered immediately. “Out. Planning containment.”
Mingi gave a sharp nod toward the far end of the room. “Too late. He’s almost finished.”
At the main console, Hongjoong’s figure stood like a statue. His hands moved with mechanical rhythm, and before him—
San’s body lay on the reconstruction cradle.
Skin forming in patches. Circuits half-lit. His face was intact—too intact. Eyes closed like a sleeper.
A display above him read: SAN PROTOTYPE: REBUILD STATUS — 70% COMPLETE
“Joong,” Seonghwa called out carefully, taking a step forward. “You need to stop.”
“He’s almost back,” Hongjoong replied, eyes never leaving the screen. “Just a few more memory threads.”
Wooyoung moved fast, circling behind the console and scanning the input feeds. “He’s forcing the connection,” he said to Seonghwa. “The code’s barely stable. One spike and he’ll loop into system corruption.”
Seonghwa nodded, voice firm. “We power him down. Now.”
“I said,” Hongjoong snarled, finally looking up, “he’s not gone!”
The others flinched at the static twist in his voice. His hand twitched at his side, barely noticeable, but unmistakably unnatural.
“Joong,” Jongho said quietly, standing now. “You’re glitching.”
“No,” Hongjoong whispered. “I’m remembering.”
But Seonghwa didn’t wait. In a flash, he darted forward and slammed his palm against the emergency override panel.
A sharp alarm blared.
The cradle’s lights dimmed. San’s partially built body jerked once, then stilled.
The display flickered: REBUILD INTERRUPTED. PROTOTYPE IN STASIS.
Hongjoong staggered back as if physically struck. “No, no, NO—he was so close—!”
Mingi grabbed his shoulders from behind. “Hyung, you need to calm down.”
Yunho was already disabling the core console’s access keys. Yeosang silently pulled out the final memory thread and crushed it in his gloved hand.
Seonghwa watched as Hongjoong’s form finally sagged, trembling, his face breaking into something fragile, grief twisted in static.
“He was my brother,” Hongjoong whispered. “I couldn’t just leave him broken.”
Seonghwa’s voice softened. “You didn’t. You tried to save him. But he wasn’t ready. And neither are we.”
At exactly 06:04 AM, the soft morning light crept through the blinds of Yn’s apartment.
She stirred slowly, a frown tugging at her lips as she sat up, the blanket falling to her lap.
Silence.
Her fingers stretched to the side of the couch—empty.
No Seonghwa.
No Wooyoung.
“Seonghwa?” she called groggily. “Woo?”
She stood and moved down the hallway—checked the small kitchen. Nothing. The tablet on the table was gone.
And a sick feeling sank into her chest.
They were gone.

On female rage and mechanical augmentation:
I imagined a cruel emperor who collected girls who caught his eye, girls from his country and every other, to put into his harem of consorts and keep as he pleased, as toys, as ornaments made of cinnabar and sandalwood, silk and peach-flesh. Perhaps one day he picks the wrong girl.
She is beautiful, this woman, like all the others, and young, also like the others; but unlike many of the others, who were weavers and spinners, fishwives and performers, this one helps her aging mother in the art of making carefully crafted machines, little marvels of copper wire and forged arms, from dolls to steam engines to pistolets and more.
The emperor in his preening believes he has saved her from a sorry life of toiling away at the workbench with chipped nails and dirty palms, a commoner’s lot in which no woman could ever be happy. On her first night at the palace she cries and cries, and he says, Don’t snivel; it doesn’t become you; you have everything you want here, do you not? What could possibly be missing? And he yanks her pretty silken hair and laughs when she cries harder.
What he doesn’t know is that she cries not out of fear or sorrow, but rage, white-hot, plain and simple.
Clever girl, she doesn’t tell him so. She schools herself into the picture of the concubine he wants - obedient and demure, sweet and soft, the way she had teased metal in the forge into well-tempered alloy and shaped it into gears and springs and blades and beams. She says to him, Husband dear, I would ask for jewelry, the better to shine for you; I would ask for precious gold thread, for diamond earrings and bronze filigree; I would ask for a heated copper bath in which to soften my skin; I would ask for charcoal with which to darken my eyes for you, cinnabar with which to paint my lips. The emperor laughed at her folly but gave her all these gifts obligingly.
Then she begins her work.
The other women she has befriended, and they teach her well. From Haewon she learns to act, to powder her face and keep up the facade to their husband the emperor; from Jiaqi she learns to roast sulfur out of the cinnabar powder and combine it with the charcoal, and from Ori-hime she learns to spin out the gold thread and weave it into a control matrix that, when laid over her spine like a collar, makes metal move with only a thought, the same way her own arms and legs do. And with her own expertise she turns the copper into hammered panels, the bronze into reinforcing cradles, the diamond into grit for blades that can cut through anything.
By day she thanks them all by shielding them from their husband. When he asks for delicate Haewon, she volunteers; she saves Ori-hime’s clever, careful hands from him by giving him her own instead; Jiaqi she claims to have fallen sick, and offers herself up humbly when he, in his disappointment at the news, needs something to strike.
Her husband calls for her one day; he’s in a terrible mood, and when he’s finished with her the next morning the other ladies carry her sore body back and lay her on the bed and soothe her with tea and wetted cloths. They fuss over the mangled remains of her right hand. But she dashes it all away. Bring me my things, she tells them. Tonight is the night.
So they get Weilin with her expertise in taking apart a body and putting it back together with only a needle and wine and some thread; then they clothe her in a dress most wondrous: shining copper and gold filigree, with jade leaves and carnelian flowers inlaid, and for her lovely face a half-mask of precious gems and steel boning to cover the ugly marks he’s left. Cinnabar for her cheeks and charcoal for her eyes. How could any man resist this vision in a thousand shining colors?
Not the emperor. When she goes to him again in the evening he all but drools.
So enraptured is he that he doesn’t notice when the other consorts shut the door behind her and lock it from the outside, or when the panels of her dress click into place, or when, in the dim light of dusk, the tiny miraculous engine in her back roars to life and sends sparks through the fine mesh of the gold collar, sets her eyes aglow.
But when the sulfur and charcoal in the little compartment hidden in the undone lobes of her right palm is set afire with the click of a steel hammer, when she brings her face close and the mandibles of her jade mask open wide - oh, then he knows.
It is a bloodbath. She emerges covered in charred gobbets of his flesh, and the whole pavilion smells of gunpowder and burning meat. But she herself is pristine, untouched.
Her ladies throw themselves over her and find that her body does not yield. The copper has fused itself into her body, the collar has inlaid itself into her spine; in the heat of the fire she seems to have been reborn in metal wholly, from head to toe. She regards them blankly over the diamond-edged mandibles they have made for her, and they look back, and for all that she is known to them, they cannot help but be a little afraid.
She says, You can go now. It is done.
In the light of the burning palace, the women look at each other; they shake their heads. No, says Jiaqi, we are yours, as surely as we were ever his, and more than that. Where else would we go, now that we’ve overthrown an empire for you, now that you have overthrown an empire for us?
So the girl in metal looks at them and then, after a long, long moment, she says, Then you will be my queens, and we’ll rule together. But why aren’t you afraid of me? Why don’t you run? I am not what I was anymore. I am a blade forged in fire.
Haewon trembles - but then she lifts her chin. She says fiercely, You were always that. We just gave you the means to become it on the outside, too.
Sen-hime agrees, and then so does Weilin. And Jiaqi smiles and steps forward and takes the consort’s hand, gunpowder barrel and all.
She looks tenderly into the bloodstained face and she says, We made you what you wanted to be, and with that you saved us. How could we ever be afraid of that?
And: You are ours, and always will be. And we will always be yours, if you’ll have us.
So she does.
They call her the Mantis Consort, She Who Rules Alone; but that isn’t quite true. She has four loyal wives, after all, and each one of them as much has the throne as she herself does. They say that each man who tries her hand in marriage - or to bring down her walls with arrows and fire - goes the same way: head ground between jade mandibles, body strewn in pieces. And her reign lasts for as long as she lives. For who can vanquish a woman armed with fury and steel alike, and the love of four clever women besides?
