The Power

My 'alone weekend' took an abrupt left turn Saturday evening just after nine. Roommate has stopped by after his barn chores to say hi and fill me in on Horse Gossip. (Leo, btw, will be leaving Wednesday to visit some mares at a stable in the east part of the county. A pony with Difficulties will be brought here to a) keep Hero from being lonely and b) let Roommate work on her Difficulties.

As we were chatting I heard the wind pick up, then distant lightning and thunder. He scuttled out to try to get chores at Home Farm done before the storm truly hit. But, no. Within minutes there was a gale blowing and rain just pounding down. I started trying to prepare for loss of power as soon as he left, by running a pitcher of water for drinking, then running a bucket of water in the bathroom for washing and flushing the toilet. I got half the bucket full, then the power cut out. Well water is drawn to the surface by a pump, so once power is out, water is also out.

I got one of the chunky square emergency lights and went to bed with my book. Twenty minutes later, the emergency light died.

In the morning, power had not yet returned. I waited until 7 and called my husband, who was visiting his sisters in PA. I then dragged the generator, which is a heavy bitch and has no good way to move it without wrecking your back, out of the woodshed and across the yard. I strung three extension cords from the generator to the freezers and fridge. I was reasonably certain I'd never be able to get the generator started, but I was going through the motions. At that point, Roommate's truck rolled up the lane. Husband had called him.

There are three switches that need to be set on the generator, then a pull cord to start it. Sparing you tedious details, Roommate did everything to start that stupid generator. Both of us getting frustrated, we went back down to Home Farm to get their generator, which was thankfully a bit smaller and easier to lug. Sparing you more details, that one also would not run. It would start, but wouldn't stay running.

Roommate was clearly reluctant to leave me without power, but he was overdue to leave to visit his parents downstate. And he had clearly tried everything in his power. I told him he was a good Bonus Child and he should go on about his day.

Husband, trying to work on the problem from three hours away, texted a neighbor. Around 10:30, that lovely man arrived with his small 'deer camp' generator. That kept our food from spoiling as the day rolled along, and the power stayed out. When my husband came home in the early afternoon, he was able to get the smaller of our generators running; Roommate in his flusterment had neglected to flip one crucial switch.

We ended up going out for dinner. Power wasn't restored until sometime in the night. yay (tiredly)
