Free speech or a privacy breach?

In previously blog posts I have briefly touched on how the digital age and social media has allowed for people to practice free speech. However the digital age also acts as a reminder to how little privacy we now have and how speaking freely can cause a multitude of problems and consequences. In recent years, we cannot go anywhere without being found on by a security camera, bank transactions and transfers are closely monitored, and even attendance are closely tracked. It seems as though despite the assumed freedom the digital age has given; we are actually more monitored and trapped than ever before.

China has been known as being a leader in digital censorship. Introduced and enforced by the Communist Party of China, the government censors content mainly for political reasons. However, the government maintains censorship over all media that could reach a wide audience (Bristow, 2010). This year the Chinese government are implementing a new system based on individual’s ‘trustworthiness’ called the ‘social credit system’ (Kobie, 2019). Those deemed as more trustworthy can gain higher internet speeds, easier access to loans and better access to European travel (Staff, 2016). Things such as posting political opinions on social media can decrease citizens credit score and lead to them being blacklisted, excluded from education and limited travel (Wang, 2019). This system can be closely compared to the Black Mirror episode entitled ‘Nosedive’. The episode depicts a world where people can give ratings to one another which can impact their socioeconomic status. Those with a low rating are deemed as having a lower status and have more restrictive rights (Monahan, 2016). 

The Chinese government believe that the system acts as a regulator for social behaviour, promote traditional values and lower crime and violence rates (Kostka, 2018). As well as this, the Chinese government also stated that they would encourage other countries to implement this system within their own society. But it raises the question why is our data and opinions no longer private? Social media users have already seen elements of their privacy being breached during the 2018 Facebook Analytica scandal. The scandal saw 50M users’ personal data harvested without their knowing or consent in an attempts to influence behaviour (Gawalladr & Graham-Harrison, 2018).

In light of all of this, what is being done to protect our online privacy? Technology leaders such as Google, Apple and WhatsApp have all updated their terms of service, introducing end-to-end encryption to private messages. However, it should be noted that this encryption is due to stop due to it compromising society safety (Newton, 2020). Is our online privacy really worth it, when prevention of terrorist threats is limited. Media users should be aware of what data will be stored by technology conglomerates when creating an account and then decide if they are willing to have this stored in response to them using the service. 

I believe that the steps taken by the Chinese government are a step too far when attempting to monitor society. However, when our privacy is breached for the safety of society I believe that to be beneficial. Free speech is a basic human right for all and that should never be taken away or silenced by government officials.

People wanting to kill the birds to control their numbers must currently apply for a "personal licence" from Natural England.

The new move applies a "general licence" to England which will enable land owners or occupiers to kill the birds from January 2010 - if they can demonstrate a legitimate reason for doing so.

Parakeets can be aggressive towards other birds, they can damage the environment and their droppings can create hygiene issues, he added.

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds conservation expert Grahame Madge said the ruling came as a "slight surprise".

"This must not be seen as a free-for-all cull or a widespread charter for removing the birds."
