And they were roommates

Xavier may look like a stereotypical athlete who got a free ride to university due to a sports scholarship, but he actually worked hard to get into the University of Brichester. He had one of the highest GPAs at the school he went to get his undergraduate degree, he had only utilized his athletic prowess to make him stand out amongst all the other candidates. (Though it helped that his late grandfather was a professor at the University of Brichester and his grandfather’s friend owned and allowed him to stay in an apartment only one block away from school for dirt cheap…) Nonetheless, he was going to do anything he could to not end up living with his deadbeat father in their sad double wide with reminders of his mother’s absence around every corner.

In despite of being busy between classes, homework, soccer nationals, and his part-time job, everything had been nearly exactly how it should have been to guarantee Xavier’s future success. The one thing amiss was his landlord’s inability to get not only a roommate that stuck around for more than one term but also a roommate who wasn’t a complete shithead. And just in time for the new term, the bedroom across from him was vacant again, meaning he’d be getting another roommate soon.

Cassius’s parents had always used their wealth and influence to get what they wanted, so it had been easy to buy their children's success. Once Cassius graduated high school, he was given no option but to attend a prestigious university to pursue a degree in something he was not interested in. He had become depressed and within six months, he had a mental breakdown due to the pressure from his parents. After a year away from school and working on his mental health, Cassius had decided to go back. He enrolled in the University of Brichester, deciding to get a degree in what he was very passionate about and naturally gifted in- Fine Arts. His mother disapproved of this, adamant that a degree in art will make him no money, but his father overruled her.

All that had been left was for him to find somewhere to live, as he (purposely) chose a school far away from home. His parents would not allow him to live alone after his breakdown, so he’d have to share a dorm or apartment with someone. Sharing a dorm had not been appealing, so he chose to look off campus and found a room for rent in an old, charming academic building that was converted into apartments one block away from university.

"And they were roommates."

Xavier was hesitant about his new roommate initially, but had quickly appreciated Cassius's normalcy in comparison to his previous roommates. In fact, he warmed quickly to the idea of getting to know Cassius, but Cassius was a bit evasive when Xavier had tried initiating conversation. So, Xavier had left it alone. After all, a quiet roommate was still a good roommate.

Weeks later, Xavier complained to some friends that one of his elective classes was quite difficult one, to which he was informed it was a higher level art class. Here he had though he'd picked something easy... His friends suggested that he ask his new roommate for help, as Cassius was a prodigy according to them. Xavier desperately asked and admitted how silly he was to pick an art class when he knew nothing of it, and his candidness made Cassius laugh. So after sharing a bit of humor, Cassius agreed to tutor him.

And through tutoring, Xavier was able to get Cassius to open up more. He invited him to events, parties, and even his games. The two became closer…

and closer…

...until one day Xavier and Cassius had become not just roommates and study buddies, but also friends.

But slowly, through shared laughs,

vulnerable conversations,

stolen glances, and maybe one too many drinks on an evening where spirits were low but the tension was high...

...they suddenly were not just friends.
