I was hanging out on the deck with Bud last night when I realized I’d forgotten I bought tickets to Sting in relatively small venue in San Francisco that I love called the Masonic, a famous location where musicians love to perform. I paused for a second and wondered if it was weird to go to a concert after my manic posting and weird mood, but I’m cheap as hell and hate to waste anything so I threw a sweater on and hopped in an Uber. And it was fun, I sang and danced - there are a million clips I could have posted on all of golden oldies but I love this one because it shows his talent. I’m fully comfortable going to stuff alone, I actually like it in the event I want to leave early but I was missing my friends not being there who couldn’t make it.
I am hardly ever on Facebook but a lot of people I know are. I ended up writing a post about the election, conservative Christianity (that I was part of for a long time) that is so difficult to know how to address. I was a little scared, they can get angry and defensive despite me spending a lot of time being deliberate about not yelling at anybody. I said they the ads from Harris campaign that Christian women were scared of their husbands was disrespectful. I’m sure that exists but it lets these white woken off the hook - many are very strong and their vote was a fuck you to Woke Culture (though the economy is important too). They have so much power in the country but they are like doctors who self-regulate - they don’t change unless it’s their own idea, so pronouns, anti-racism, BLM - none of it ever had a chance. They don’t accept behavioral boundaries and expectations that they don’t create themselves, so to think they can be influenced from the outside is likely wasted energy. That anti-racism, and-sexism, LGBTQIA rights will only happen on a large scale if they are behaviors they come up with in their own - they don’t accept moral truths from anyone except themselves and get defensive when asked, so I was not applying energy in debate or discussion anymore. I’m an outsider. I’m woke culture the second I ask them to do something, I’m the Evil One. And frankly it’s pretty arrogant that I would think I’m some kind of teacher anyway. There’s tons of things we can do together but I’m parting ways on these areas. It made a couple of people angry and very defensive but I didn’t engage.
I hate that stuff but I do know that for my problematic generation, it’s where important conversations happen and they know my investment in them. I got a lot of DMs, some angry comments that had some good points and a mix of other thought. I’m not indulging the inner Diane drama anymore, buckling up and getting creative on how to move forward. Being a dick to everyone that voted for him kind of feels good in the short-term but I know I’d regret it, it just doesn’t feel right to me personally. Others are in a different place.
Today, I went to acupuncture and damn, it was painful. My body is sore from all of the walking but he did note how much weight I’ve lost, which was nice (he knows I’m working on it).
Now Bud and I are snuggled on the couch under a toasty electric blanket. I fell asleep at 4am this morning, turns out a Diet Coke at 4pm when you’ve hardly had any caffeine is not the best idea. So I’ll sleep well tonight.
Hope you are resting well, grieving where needed and finding some hope in what we can learn from this and what we can do right now to have massive impact. It’s surreal bring back to having to protect Black and Brown women on the street but we are.

i used to go to concerts all the time with my uncle and my sister - michael jackson, david bowie, prince, tina turner, sting, etc. when he died, my sister and i went to a few concerts (cecilia bartoli at the ambassador auditorium in pasadena was a highlight for me) but it did not feel the same without him.
and i realize that my nephew has never been to a concert. so my sis and i decided to get him and his friend tickets to jay-z and beyonce’s tour (my sis and i are going too). my nephew is a fan of jay-z and shawn loves queen bey. i am excited and really hope that he enjoys the experience - how the music somehow permeates every pore in your body, how your body just moves, how you find yourself belting the lyrics, how you become one with the crowd.
to anyone who sees this post, i was wondering what is your favorite concert.
mine as i mentioned above was a recital by cecilia b. my sis and i had these cheap “annual” student tickets. if a concert is not oversold (i think we call that day to confirm), we pay like a nominal charge and pick up the seats at the will-call window. so we (along with other students) were told that there were seats but when we got there, there were no seats at all and were told to leave. ms. bartoli found out and made them place seats behind her so we sat five feet from her and every now and then she would turn to us and sing to us. at the end, for the encore, she turned all the way around and sang to us (she was like five feet from us and the moment was really intense) as well danced a flamenco. she had such a magical presence and is such a beautiful soul!

Merry Christmas, Scalpers! Wong Faye Comes to Shanghai (2016)
All things considered, Shanghai might be hosting one of the world’s most expensive concerts in two weeks.
Pop icon Wong Faye, returning after an “indefinite hiatus” in 2010, will be playing at the Mercedes Benz arena, and tickets, predictably, sold out in under 10 minutes of going on sale.
What caught Radar’s attention, though, was the ticket prices. 1800 RMB (~260 USD) for the cheapest tier? Standard tickets (ones where you can actually see the stage) ranging between 8000 to 13000 RMB (1150 to 1850 USD)?
At standard and VIP rates, that makes Wong Faye’s Christmas gig the most expensive concert in recent music history, out-charging The Rolling Stones (624 USD), Sting’s 60th birthday concert (1073 USD), the entire Glastonbury Festival (300 USD) and a full year’s worth of shows at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (~900 USD).
By contrast, the most expensive tickets for Faye’s last gig in 2010 were 2500 RMB.
While it’s amply evident that there is massive demand for Wong Faye, even at this price, our issue here is with the ethical justifications for overcharging (and let’s be clear, this is clearly overcharging).
The show was announced in Beijing in September, where Wong said, sharing the stage with officials from Tencent, that “she was interested in streaming technology and and VR.” Tencent will have streaming rights for the gig.
How exactly VR will figure in the concert remains to be seen, but even with state-of-the-art technological wizardry, the operational costs for this show do not come anywhere near the ticket prices being charged. It certainly aligns with the way that the economy of China seems to be skewing – what once was a competitively flat playing field has now become a steep hierarchy, defined largely by wealth. A society that is probably making poor Gini spin uncontrollably in his grave.
In the US, the musical Hamilton, while charging close to 500 USD for a single seat, also has a lottery system for cheap 10$ tickets, as well as regularly giving away tickets to charities and groups representing underprivileged communities.
Wong’s fans, if KTV lore is to be believed, span class, geography and gender across China, and yet this show – a chance to see an icon – is merely a playground for the super-rich.
Expect the scalpers to have a field day with this one. A merry Christmas for them indeed.

Ranting about the Wild West Steam Fest
I wasn’t expecting it to be spectacular. It’s a small event. I thought maybe they might have improved over last year, at least. It did not. Full rant under the cut.
They didn’t learn from last year and provide better food options... we dodged that bullet by eating on the way there, but one vendor said she waited in line for 1 1/2 hours for lunch! All I actually saw myself was a single food truck. Last year, there was a single food truck for lunch, and a waffle truck before dinner time. And the waffle truck ran out of waffles! I can only guess that they did the same this year, considering the wait time.
There was no programming schedule for a measly single day event (how hard is it to type out the events of one day?), not even at the entrance. One member of my party had to work part of the day and we were late, which meant we may have missed something that was actually fun. Of course that wasn’t their fault... but I had no way to check or to find out what was still going on, since no one bothered to write it down.
But since we came later, it gave them more time to get good at handing out will-call tickets... and they were not. They were confused, chaotic, and fairly rude. They gave you the feeling that they thought you were trying to steal something or get something you had no right to have if you happened to inconvenience them in the slightest.
The first thing that happened was that we were ordered back to the car to get my daughter’s I.D. for her will call ticket. Not politely told. Ordered. “It’s in the car,” my daughter said. “Go on! Go get it!” the lady said back, gesturing toward the parking lot.
When we got it, they shuffled through the mess on the table looking for a will call list. A woman they called over eventually told me they weren’t supposed to have a will call list, I was supposed to have a printout of the tickets and it was clear that I was once again expecting special treatment for not having that on me. I pulled it up on my phone, thank goodness, though why I needed I.D. if I had the email on my phone... and sure enough, they really didn’t look at I.D.
They managed to get the wifi to play nice and scan the tickets (totally not their fault, that one I understand). In the process, my daughter and her friend had moved off to the side maybe 6 feet. I pointed at them as they were scanning to say that they were the others listed, yet somehow in that time the staff no longer seemed to understand that the tickets they had just scanned were for four effing people (though one of our party had to stay home sick) and were quoting ticket prices for the two of them.
I hastily said they were with me, and the woman was huffy and said I should have told her that, and once again I was given the impression that I was being an entitled troublemaker in not having told her they were with me. (um...)
They huffily put wristbands on them and gave me some extra sew on patches for my trouble (I didn’t even want one). The VIP’s got a plastic tumbler like they give kids at Lil Caesar’s and a plastic coin for what I swore they said was a free Icee... I never actually found out what foods were available.
I’m glad to say that everyone after that was nice, even the poor vendor who had to wait for lunch. But we missed a lot (our fault) and had no reference to give us an idea what we could still do and see (their fault).
I didn’t buy VIP tickets because I’m a big spender. I bought them because they were relatively cheap for VIP tickets and included actual chairs at the concert (for my boneless daughter who gets tired easily), which was cancelled. I didn’t expect butt-kissing, but I’ve worked a similar role at another con and I personally think every paying customer merits a certain amount of schmoozing even while you check lists and I.D. (more so because things like that can rub some people the wrong way). So yeah, I expected anyone to be treated better than that.
And I felt the sting of wasted money, sure, though I didn’t even try to get my money back after SPG was cancelled (since it would only be a partial refund because we were going to the event anyway)
...unlike some who tried, and were denied. That in itself is scandalous, imho. These are people who paid for a thing and that thing was no longer as described, some of them going ONLY because of that concert. Maybe there was some fine print that upheld the event’s decision but that doesn’t make it clean, just legal. Unfortunately, those aren’t always the same thing.
Steampunks are mostly pretty nice folks. It’s like a lot of groups and their gatherings... mostly people want to have fun and mix with others of similar interests, and with a little time the majority works out what makes things more fun and what will kill the fun, and you get a lot of openness and tolerance and friendly compliments all around. So once inside, there were nice people and lovely costumes and friendly vendors.
But not enough was going on besides that to justify even the standard event price they asked for, and these people had charged still more for a cancelled concert and still more for chairs at said concert, and yet they couldn’t even provide a schedule and some good manners, making even their VIPs feel like they’d been pulled over by a cop instead of coming to a “fun” event.
And though I’ve been to a number of these, I won’t be coming back to Wild West Steam Fest. The only thing that could tempt me is a good band at this point, and I wouldn’t believe them even if they said they’d booked one. We’ve been down that road already.
#steampunk#goodstuff#and I took their part when they cancelled the band#I'm a little sorry I did#well kinda#because at the time I genuinely felt for them#as I thought they had gotten in over their heads#buh-bye steam fest#the magic is gone#I saw my first SPG concert at Calico at WWSF#it was a lot cooler then#2013 had so much going on#so recent and yet it seems so long ago

Stick ‘N Poke
Arabella
"I shouldn't be the one to do this, look at my hands. They're shaking!" He says this as he presses the ink dipped needle to my wrist. I grab his sallow cheek with my palm and force him to look at me.
"I trust you, you idiot" I say, my voice firm, sincere. His brown, nearly black eyes study my face before looking back at my wrist. My pulse throbs and the lighting makes it so the purple blue of my veins can be distinguished.
"I'm drawing a dick yeah?"
"A huge one. Throbbing veins and such" I tease and he laughs his cute, nervous chuckle.
"But really, what'll you have?" I lock eyes with him again and admire the rosy blush that tints the pale apples of his cheeks.
"Matty" I say dreamily and he blinks.
"Yes?" I laugh, head tilted back and all.
"No! I'll have it say Matty" he blinks again and glances from my wrist to my face then back again.
"Matty" he repeats in awe and I nod, all smiles.
"How about just an ' M'?" I frown.
"You don't like it?" He looks down at the leather of his shoes.
"I love it. I do. I love you as well" I tilt his chin up with a long, painted finger.
" The problem then?" He sighs.
" It means your mine" he states simply, the side of his lip curling. Mine does the same.
" Does it?" He stretches up to capture my lips in a bruising kiss.
" it does. And I'm not totally sure how lax you are with the idea" silly boy I think to myself whilst tugging on his earlobe. I've always belonged to you I want to say, but there was no reason to boost his ego.
"Just poke me already" I say with exasperation and he dips the needle in more ink.
"I poked you quite well this morning I believe" he murmurs, settling the needle to my wrist breaking the skin.
"You're so gross Matthew" I scold through clenched teeth and he laughs, pressing harder. Drops of blood mixed with ink fall down my arm and he wipes the away hurriedly with a napkin.
" No going back after I pen the ' A' love" he'd finished the ' M' rather quickly. He was a stick and poke pro it seemed.
"Well don't keep a girl waiting" I taunt and he's quick to etch the remainder of his name in thin cursive. Matty dips a cloth in the mixture of vodka and water he'd sworn by and I wince when the sting of the concoction touches my red, ink smudged skin.
"It's hideous," he comments. Holding my wrist under the desk lamp as if lighting would improve it. I gaze at it. My skin had raised and reacted to each stick of the needle and now the name 'Matty' blared in angry irritated flesh.
"It's perfect" I whisper softly and his mouth offers a smirk.
"Like it’s namesake" he states cockily and I shove him away, his bare chest cool against my palms.
"My turn?" I bite my lip and scan the pale skin before me. He's littered in tattoos. Gorgeous ones, bright and detailed, small and large. I think back to the chicken scratch that I call my handwriting and flashback to the deformed stick figures I'd been drawing since elementary school. Pass.
"Don't you have enough?" His eyes widen and he lifts his arms, examining the scrawny things with deep intent.
"What are you looking for?" He looks up from his searchings, rolling up the black denim of his jeans to reveal two knobby ankles.
"A fuck to give ya," he says idly and I roll my eyes, stalking towards him, knocking over the vodka water solution in the process.
"Oi!" He scolds and I ignore him settling myself comfortably on his lap.
"Who do you think'll clean that up? Not me I guarantee " he insists and I pucker out my bottoms lip, tracing the planes of his face with a quivering finger. My wrist was finally starting to feel the affects of the tattoo. He grabs my hand and places it first to his cheek then to his dry lips.
"I'm sure George will clean it up." I say and his eyes squint.
"It's like you don't know him at all. He'll have my fuckin' head if he comes back to the flat being dirty" I settle closer to him listening to the rapid ticks of his heart.
"Blame me then," Matty rests his chin atop my head.
"I plan to" he says evenly. I don't sense a hint of a lie.
"You'd really throw me to that wolf?" I feel him shrug.
"Better you than me." He says with a long stroke to my back. I reach up my uninjured arm to settle at the nape of his neck. My long nails are immediately caught up in the tendrils of his inky black hair.
"What time is it?" I ask lightly. We had both been avoiding the concept of time, pretending that we were stuck in the same moment forever. What was to come next was almost too melodramatic, even for the emo king himself.
"It's a quarter past 3"
"you even find a way to make the time sound pretentious" he shrugs, cradling me closer. His body swaying on the fuzzy rug we were currently marooned on.
"Won't your folks notice your little dabbling in the arts?" He's referring to my wrist and It's my time to shrug.
"They haven't seemed to notice that I'm out of the country" he makes an agreeable sound in the back of his throat.
"I'm sure they're lovely people Arabella, but they are simply daft" Matty wasn't wrong. In fact 'daft' was too nice of a word to describe my parents.
"I'm still shocked that they think I've stayed at Miranda's house this long. She gets annoying after three hours"
"George didn't seem to think so" he says cheekily and I attempt to harm him with a jab to the ribs, but he holds me in a way that makes it impossible.
"This was nice," I whisper into the dimly lit room and he lets put a defeated sigh before gazing down at me. his brown, black eyes troubled as per usual. Brewing and darkening with pent up emotion that I would most likely hear later via voicemail.
"You can't be what I need you're only seventeen" he stresses, reiterating a line from the band's song ' Girls'. I smile, biting my lip and inviting him in for a kiss. He grips at my ass as the kiss deepens. Our tongues exploring the cavities of the other's mouth. I probably taste like the Virginia slim I'd smoked earlier and he tasted like cheap red wine and rolling paper.
"What if you keep me here?" I ask breathlessly. It was a suggestion neither of us had ever made during our rendezvous.
"Isn't that kidnapping?" He teases lightly licking the plum colored lipstick that had stained his lips from mine from his mouth.
"Isn't this statutory rape?" I ask and he cringes.
"Age of consent is sixteen" I roll my eyes.
"In the UK it is. I'm American genius" he rolls his eyes in an overdramatic fashion before rolling so that both of us land on the soft mattress that sat in the middle off the room.
" My little American" he whispers before attacking my neck with a parade of kisses and tiny suckles. He had said the same line when we first met, the first time we fucked, then a second time when we made love.
"Takes me back to that horrible day that I met you" I say with a tiny chuckle, my body arching against his. My legs winding around his waist as his breathing intensified.
"Was it really so bad?" h nearly whines and I let out a breath against his ear.
"I've had better first impressions."
The Horrible Day
"I'm going to die when they preform Medicine. You're in my will though don't worry." Miranda rambles as we make our way through LA traffic. Our Uber drove like a maniac and I found myself clawing at the leather of his backseat.
"If you leave that stupid ass cat to me I'll bring you back from the dead just to kill you again" I say through clenched teeth and she rolls her eyes.
"He loves you. You're his favorite"
"Impossible. The thing has Stockholm Syndrome or something." I sip on the large drink I'd gotten from In N Out and Miranda continues her fantasy spiel for tonight's show. Miranda had been gifted two tickets to see The 1975 for her seventeenth birthday and I had been her first ( and only) choice. No one else in our immediate friend group was into them.
"You are here" our Uber says in a thick accent and I smile giddily. All to ready to get out of the vehicle.
"Fuck we're early. Think we'll get to see Matty?" I look at the venue where a gaggle of girls line the entrance, eager to be granted passage.
"Nah, not until show time I reckon" The ticket bouncers started to let us in two hours before showtime to give people like Miranda a chance to buy overpriced concert merchandise. I on the other hand took the opportunity to use the bathroom. The lemonade had acted as a severe diuretic. I spot the ladies room and push the door open with my sleeve. Once inside I locked eyes with a fluorescent light illuminated Matty Healy. His pants around his ankles and a blonde girl's lips wrapped around his cock.
"M-" my mouth goes dry and I can't see to form coherent words let alone a scream or sentence.
"Fuck" he hisses, eyes still l locked with mine as she went to town. I admired her vigor and dedication. The linoleum of the bathroom floor was disgusting and I wasn't sure if it was the scene or the bathroom making me nauseous. I back away slowly. Attempting to leave, but instead becoming A bit entranced when her hands start trailing up the bare skin of his stomach and chest. I watch as his stomach tightens and then bolt into an open stall when he grips her hair and shuts his eyes. I stand in the stall for a few moments trying to collect myself, and the blood rushing in my ears is so loud that I can't hear their conversation. A bang on my stall door startles me and I croak out an unconvincing, 'occupado'.
I hear a chuckle. A whimsical one. A male one. Matty's
"Come out love, she's left" whatever urge I had to pee was gone. I crack open the door and poke my head out slowly. His pants are up, his shirt still wide open and his hair artfully wild.
"Matty" he says brightly hand outstretched and ready for me to shake.
"Matty" I repeat, dumbfounded. His eyes widen and his hand retracts.
"You're Matty too? Small world eh?" He jokes, and I crack a stupid smile.
"Arabella"
"Ah, more fitting. Lovely really" he nods bouncing on the balls of his feet, hands in his pockets and teeth chewing on his inner cheek.
"thanks" I manage and he offers me a warm smile. One that soothes the redness in my cheeks.
"I've got a bit of a show to do, but I want to see you backstage Arabella. Cool?" He digs in his pocket and reveals a backstage pass. I don't move to take it so he loops it around my neck, pulling my hair up so it doesn't tangle.
"Lotus" he inhales before letting my hair fall and leaving the bathroom. I walk to cracked mirror and examine my face.
"Shit," I whisper.
"Shit," my reflection echoes as if she too can't believe that I had just met Matty Healy in the dingy bathroom of a concert venue whilst he was getting off.
"Shit."

Lesson 2 Assignment: Becoming Value-able
One day when I was in Québec, I went to a concert with a couple of friends. We went to see Sting livewith a couple of his old friends from The Police. The show was awesome and our little group stayed untilthe end, when 50 thousand people were going to take the buses to go home. As we were taking the lineto enter a bus, one of our friends found out that she had lost her purse, which didn´t have a lot ofmoney, but had her bus card, and without it she couldn´t enter the bus. The price for a bus ticket at thattime was incredibly high, and none of us had enough money to lend her (we spent it all on the concert,in food and drinks and souvenirs) and the line to buy one ticket was too big, so we wouldn´t have beenable to arrive at the school at the time that we needed to (2:00 am). Some of our friends said that theywere sorry, but they were going to leave her behind in order for them to arrive on time, but I had abetter idea. Using my superior math skills, I calculated the distance from that point to the school, thetime we needed to arrive there, the average walking speed of a human being, and the amount of timewe would be waiting for a red light, and I got an idea. If all of us, at that very moment, walked straight tothe next bus stop, bought a ticket (those were really cheap), take it to the closest stop, and walkedthrough the woods, that would give us just enough time for all of us to arrive 5 minutes early andreceive no punishment. And so we did. It was, of course, a long walk, and we actually arrived 2 minuteslate (which, thankfully, were not punished). This way I helped my friend, who moved from feeling lonelyand left behind to feeling loved and cared, but it also was a great experience for all of us. It was just somuch time running through the city at midnight and making our way through the woods withoutpermission (and we also exercised a lot). I know that a lot of people wouldn’t had made this “sacrifice”for a friend, but I learned that sometimes by helping someone with a problem, and walking besides herto a solution, you can grow better, and learn a lot about yourself.

Let me tell you why Al Jarreau’s passing saddend me more than any recent legend passing away. Goes way back to how I developed this “money wasting” habit of going to concerts.
It started early and it ran in the family. My Dad did it! I don’t know how much my brothers remember, but now that I think about it, from the freebie concerts on campus to LCLR, Swara Mahardhikka to Stevie Wonder in Ancol in the 80s, and some I missed when I went to school in the USA (yes I remember you guys regalling me with Phil Collins in Ancol stories), my Dad was kinda a softie when it came to live concerts. Or theater. I discovered not many Dads did that back then. And Mom? Oh you bet she enjoyed concerts. We all did.
So fast forward a bit to Al Jarreau. I remember it well. 1987. I was still a 3rd or 4th semester undergrad with no income (because living with parents standard back then) and everyone is excited about Al Jarreau coming to Jakarta for the first time. Al Jarreau. Spain. Take Five. After All. Morning... and the list goes on. My track record of Jazz concerts up to that point was limited to routine standing under the trees in Jazz Goes to Campus trying to catch Candra Darusman playing.(I was total geek back then, ok? Well, still am). Anyway, as you can imagine the tickets were not cheap. I started giving subtle and not so subtle hints about begging for tickets. What made Dad give in? I think because it was after Idul Fitri or something. I remember mas Candra Darusman dropping by for a Idul Fitri visit and I started babbling about Al Jarreau and Dad with usual enigmatic style with the full intent of embarrasing me in front of my jazz hero (who just happened to be his student) said “Yeah, she’s begging for tickets to see Al Jarreau” Way to go DAD. Embarass me more will you?
But hey, as I learned later in life, Dad apparently preferred his children to have these experiences rather than buying expensive stuff. What stuff back then? I honestly don’t remember, but I do remember going to see Al Jarreau live, in Jakarta for the first time in my life. Later on, Chick Corea also in Jakarta. And the rest is history. So for those who wonder why I like to splurge on going from concert to concert, or waiting for Java Jazz every year for a decade, some for the Top 40 feeling: Chicago, David Foster, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, STING , some for the Been There experience: Billy Joel-Elton John (94), Jon Secada at the World Cup(94) and why I thought I was strong enough to do a stadium concert with Coldplay 2017 (apparently not) the life lession from my father, now dutifully passed on to the grand kids (got those Ed Sheeran tickets yet Aliya?) was that being a fangirl/fanboy is welcome in the Ismangil household, because they give you memories of a life time. Of course, T&C apply.
Another one for childhood memories, so thank you Al, thank you for the music, thank you for signing my albums with your friends George Duke and George Benson, thank you for being you.
