Alright let's get this out of the way: Centaurs ranked by fuckability. These are the only centaur characters I genuinely care about because I'm picky and centaur characters are rare as it is (and I rarely seek them out, I prefer to let them come to me). If you ask me about any centaur not on the list my answer's just gonna be some variation of "would"
Stinz from Stinz: 2/10, I sadly like men with issues but that is just too many issues
Rook from Hotblood: 5/10, a solid guy, I'd give him a night to remember but there wouldn't be much beyond that
Firenze from H*rry P*tter: 6/10, I am unfortunately obligated to put him on here by dint of "first major centaur crush." And because he remains one of the only major representatives of My Type of centaur
Glenstorm from Narnia: 8/10, we would have a long and prosperous fwb relationship

Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul from Animorphs: 9/10, a bit of a boring family man but he's got the body of an alien equine Adonis and I know we'd treat each other right

Elktaur from Centaurworld: 10/10, I would break that poor little meow meow's back
Channa from Bella Sara: 1000000/10, my first girl, my best girl, I would do anything for her. I would get on my knees for her. The personality I've projected onto her is everything I've ever wanted in a woman

If you are a creator, this is your sign to create female and nb centaur characters with personality and motivations and an impact on the plot. There are basically none. The world of fictional centaurs is a sausage fest.

I've had my hrihriwa for a year now and I hadn't even considered if they go into heat like horses?? It seems almost too obvious that my Kink Horses should go into heat, like I'm just throwing all the fanfic tropes at them. But man,, it would be so fun to play around with...
Like, what cultural practices would arise around heat? Would it be considered inappropriate for a stallion to 'drop' when he smells a mare in heat? Would they stay in human form for the duration of the heat to try and curb some of their instincts?
In Stinz, when a stallion drops, it's considered deeply embarrassing, but not wholly unexpected or inappropriate. The other centaurs take it in stride; they don't judge stallions for it, but they do expect stallions to get a grip and go somewhere private until they're retracted again.

#RPGCovers Week Fourteen Lace and Steel (1989) Donna Barr
This is one of those covers where the draw is the distinct style and vision of the artist involved. In this case Donna Barr, who did a number of long-running series including Stinz “about a society of centaur-like people in a setting reminiscent of pre-industrial Germany” and The Desert Peach “about Pfirsich Rommel, the fictional homosexual younger brother of Erwin "The Desert Fox" Rommel.”
Barr’s work uses distinct inks (and occasional watercolors). It creates an effect which has cartoonish elements, but doesn’t feel cartoony– like Usagi Yojimbo or the best of Girl Genius. It’s joyful and always carries a sense of fun, even when the material is serious.
The original edition of Laces & Steel was a slipcase boxed set. It was among the first rpgs I remember to use cards as a distinct element, in this case unique sets for resolving verbal and physical duels. The setting is a fantastical swashbuckling version of Europe with peoples of different ancestries (satyrs, harpies, etc.) involved in romances, wars, and social climbing.
The cover of that boxed set is good: dynamic and engaging. There’s energy and the feel of a real, serious duel– with our noblewoman in the background providing a reaction and a set of stakes. But in some ways the use of color here mutes Barr’s work. You see that when you examine the covers of the four booklets from this game.
They’re amazing– a brilliant presentation of geography, history, fashion, and more. All of the covers have amazing detail, worked almost exclusively in black and white, with a few greyscale elements. They’re the kinds of images you could look at all day and find new ornamentation. The Character book is properly sexy, Book Two, Naked Steel, is a mix of triumph with the terrible warfare happening behind, Book Three presents a geography which reminds me of the David Macaulay books, and Book Four introduces more of the frightful and fantastic.
And all of this doesn’t even touch on the great array of interior art which Barr provides.

I'm a close friend of the author in real life.
The Desert Peach is honestly a must-read-- it's hilarious and Donna really knows her stuff.
Here's her website: https://donnabarr.blogspot.com/
Order a few comics from her and support small artists! Or you can read it for free on Webtoon, where she has also posted Stinz, which is a comic she did about German centaurs half-horses.
Historical Fiction Recommendation
A bit of an unusual post, but I recently learned about the existence of the Desert Peach comic series created by Donna Barr and I need more people to know about it because it's a true gem. A big shoutout goes to @darksideoftwenty who introduced me to this comic, otherwise I may have never even knew that it existed!
To put it simple, the story is about Rommel's fictional gay younger brother called Pfirsich (sidenote, this is literally just the German word for peach and not actually used as a name, but it's still cute😅). He is the leader of a small support unit of the Afrika Korps, which consists mostly of people that are considered "misfits" in other parts of the army. The individual stories consist of all sorts of adventures and shenanigans but also have overarching plot points.
I think it's important to not let yourself fool by the potential first impression with this comic. At first glance, Pfirsich may seem like the absolute stereotype of the effeminate gay man, but there's actually so much more to him. This applies to the other characters too, as the story goes on and we get to know more about them, their personalities just become more and more well-rounded. At least since issue 3 I've been absolutely hooked.
For a comic that was written in the 80s and 90s, I was also extremely impressed how delicately it touches on and handles topics that are still relevant today, and manages to balance chaos and silliness with more serious and darker moments. Of course, not everything may be politically correct by today's standards and you should keep that in mind, but honestly I think there are pieces of media that are far more recent and still did things like this much worse.
The comic is available entirely for free on Webtoon, so if WW2 fiction is something you're into you should definitely give it a try. Apparently there was also a musical made back in the 90s that was based on the comics, but I could barely find anything related to it, I wish there existed recordings😭 Please note that although there aren't really depictions of sensitive content - injuries and (partial) nudity may occur but are usually quite simplified thanks to the art style - but due to the subject matter, it is targeted at adult audiences.
I'm currently at issue 18 and can't wait to continue reading! Here's just one small excerpt showing Pfirsich and Erwin (dancing together and I love how small it makes Erwin look xD), their brother relationship is hilarious and just absolutely adorable <3

If you haven’t read any of the Stinz comics by Donna Barr, I recommend them. Beautiful artwork and stories about centaurs living their best, if chaotic lives.
I adore Stinz! Had to put it down when I got to Family Values, because hoo boy, that was not a childhood trauma I was ready to face at that time. But I think I'm gonna pick it up again today. Thanks for reminding me :)
Here's the first chapter/issue of Stinz, for those who may be curious. It's very sweet
The entire comic is on Webtoons:

Gonna steal that bit of worldbuilding from Stinz where the half-horses are extremely modest, but only about their "hairless half"

I thought it was cute, and it makes sense for hrihriwa.
I've decided that some clans have decorative (not modest) clothes/accessories for their horse body. Something like horse brass and funeral shrouds

What are your thoughts on Afterdead?
Thanks for the asks, Anon! :)
Ah, I have to confess that I haven’t actually read Afterdead yet. Partly because I feel like I should read Stinz first, but mostly because I’m A Damn Coward and felt so wrung-out both times I’ve finished The Desert Peach that I was only in the mood for fix-it fics afterwards lol. Plus the idea of putting these characters in some kind of eternal afterlife version of the Third Reich after they already suffered through the real thing is…super unappealing to me. :/
It’s definitely still on my list (after Stinz) but I might need to work up the courage / give myself time to emotionally decompress first!
Have you read it? What did you think of it?

A coincidence of the literal and literary sort: I was reading through an old comic book called The Dreamery for the adventures of germanic centaur Stinz and one of the letters mentioned a certain Diane Duane. I had to go back and re-read previous issues to figure out you'd written the Ivan The Inexperienced set. (raven prince is the best prince)
(grin) I like the Raven Prince too.
I have a soft spot for that batch of work as it’s a restatement, in a way, of some stuff that happened with Peter and me on our (second)(real) date.
I’d been asked to attend a tiny media convention held in a pub in a part of London called East Sheen–secondary to being out that way for some publicity surrounding the UK version of Spock’s World. And Peter turned up at this thing and we wound up having a long talk about how he was rewriting (and rewriting and REWRITING) his second novel, and how the rewrites (off his betas’ notes: at least they’re what we would now think of as betas) were driving him nuts, as the notes changed every time and were all mutually contradictory.
So in essence I gave him an early but quite indignant and very impassioned version of the A Writer Is Not A Democracy, You Are A Dictatorship (You Can Be A Benevolent Dictatorship If You Want To But That’s Up To You Not Them) Lecture, which he accepted with (I’m pretty sure at this end of time) profound relief.
And then we kicked back and spent the rest of the evening telling each other folktales. We were delighted to discover that we pretty much knew all the same ones. And at some point the Tale Of Tsarevitch Ivan, The Firebird and the Grey Wolf came up, and it got, well, a bit wild and woolly… because when Peter tells it, there are sound effects. (There is simply no point in my attempting to describe the sound of Peter doing the Raven Prince “striking thrice upon the ground and becoming a fine young man. “Lascivious” doesn’t BEGIN to cover the territory. The three screeches as of heavy aircraft tires hitting the runway and bouncing are just a bonus.)
Anyway. So time went by and we got hitched and we wound up doing that comics work (he was involved in doing a space comic for Fusion), and I did the version of the Prince Ivan story that I’d started telling Peter that night. (And if I love it that my artist on these goes by the name Sherlock, surely that’s somewhat understandable.) BTW, did you know that these have since been collected? With a new final chapter added: “The Tale of Prince Ivan and the Bachelor Parties Of Doom”.)
Voilá.

May I recommend the Stinz comics by Donna Barr as another source of centaur art at all ages? I believe they’re all free to read on Webtoons these days. Though I think the only real infant is in Family Values.
Do you have any references for centaur foals? It's really hard to find any references that's not adults
Yea! Enjoy a dump of all my centaur babies! They're mostly a bit older drawings but I think they still hold up haha and I don't think many people draw them cause they can be a little funky- what with the chunky little bodies on big ol spidery legs 😅 But I still think they're cute 💜

And a lot of my drawings of the bitties are in slings, as that's how I built in infant care with an L-shaped infant 😂

and of course, some goofy little baby Sunny doodles <3
