Marble bust of the god Dionysus. While most deities in the Hellenic pantheon have fixed iconographic representations (e.g. Zeus is always bearded, while Apollo never is), Dionysus is represented by a variety of iconographic types, ranging from a beardless, androgynous youth (as here) to a mature man with a heavy beard and bull's horns. This likely represents the god's fluid nature and frequent transgression of boundaries (including gender boundaries, as a male deity whose devotees were predominantly female).
This bust was executed by an unknown artist in the 2nd century AD/CE (Roman Imperial period) and was found at Knossos, Crete. It is now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, Crete.

Plant of the Day
Friday 23 May 2025
Though Cymbalaria muralis (ivy-leaved toadflax, climbing sailor, Colisseum ivy, devil's ribbon, ivy weed, Kentucky ivy, Oxford ivy, penny leaf, wandering sailor) is not a native species to the UK, it is now considered naturalised, having been here for several hundred years. The plant is a perennial that thrives in the cracks in old walls and pavements, and in rocky places. The small, snapdragon-like flowers were attracting a painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui).

Votive relief of Pentelic marble, found in the Plaka neighborhood of Athens, depicting (L to R) Artemis, Apollo, and Leto. Artemis holds her bow; Apollo sits atop the sacred cauldron of the Delphic Pythia, while the twins' mother Leto, standing, holds his arm. The relief is thought to have been a dedication at the Pythion, a shrine to Pythian Apollo near the Olympieion. By an unknown artist, it dates to the end of the 5th century BCE (Classical period) and is now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Photo credit: George E.
