"Hey Natsume, remember that sleepover you WEREN'T invited to? 🤪" is probably my favorite recurring bit. I hope it never dies.

i vote that next year instead of reading Dracula we do a Jeeves & Wooster Book Club. those two never got the rabid tumblr shipping fandom they deserved (disqualified for the sheer technicality of being published a century too soon). we must correct this injustice

what jobs would the boys have if it was a completely normal, no mutant, no superpower world? Presumably they wouldn't know each other, but in a world where mutants don't exist, do you think they'd still gravitate and find each other somehow?
wade would be a mercenary who dies of cancer and peter would be a photographer who dies of mediocrity I guess.
wade would die before they meet 💔 very sad

imo both gattaca and asteroid city are movies that unless you are able to see queer relationships in media for what they are (not just oh he was depressed and it was an ableist choice and that's it, oh augie was the only one grieving and jones wasn't), and i don't mean maliciously, because i've noticed that a lot of people just Genuinely Do Not Fucking Get It.
i expected to talk about the hair cutting implications at the end of gattaca when we discussed it in my film class last year and we didn't at all. like you guys watched the same movie right. you saw vincent give irene a single strand of hair as a gesture of romantic love and then at the end when jerome gave vincent a large amount of his own hair what did you see that as. what did you think was happening there. you cannot seriously think that jerome kills himself just because he thinks he's useless now because his completely platonic roommate doesn't need him anymore and the director wanted to be ableist. that cannot seriously be what you got out of the movie.
this morning my analysis of asteroid city was the only one that mentioned jones's and conrad's romantic relationship and acknowledged that jones was grieving throughout the entire movie. after hearing it one of my classmates was like "oh what you said with jones and the directors relationship i see that now". ... my brother in christ. they kissed on screen. they held hands. i just. okay. it's not like jones is clearly still mourning off set or anything. it's not like his grief is so much more obvious and real when he speaks about it through metaphor instead of him directly mentioning augie's dead wife or anything. it's not like he was desperate for an answer, to understand the play completely so that he could grieve conrad the "right" way, to really burn his hand on the griddle so he could finally understand what conrad wanted from the character and what he was trying to say. obviously that's just a hidden bonus interpretation instead of the Actual Fucking Plot Of The Movie.

What do you think wander lore would be like if we had a third season ?
i really don't know, it would depend on how much of his backstory was ever intended to be revealed. like he gets close to talking about the other names people used for him in the past, and he's excited to show sylvia what he was up to a thousand years ago, but like, would we get an explanation for that little shaking wander he's so afraid of in the wanders? would we get to know what made wander so helpless he wanted to make sure nobody ever felt that way again? would we see a home planet, or a family, or any old traveling companions? or is he doomed to be vague because it makes him more magical?
honestly i think it would probably include like. a couple of little lore-drops to expand on a little more, but it wouldn't leave the audience without like a hundred more questions. i think the speculation is really fun, anyway, so i dunno if i would rather know his full life's story or if i'd rather keep guessing at whatever is most interesting to me. im just like these people except cooler and less wrong (slash j)
Tumblr media
and tbh i don't have any real headcanons for wander's actual origin point because everything i think about feels a little unsatisfying and makes him a little too dr who. in my head, wander's been around for however long it takes the universe to forget the imprint of whatever brought him into existence in the first place, and that's all i can speculate on without feeling like melodie and her expansive tale of family and feels or whatever

BnHA Chapter 425: New Normal
Previously on BnHA: Everyone was all “and with that we conclude our final battle for better or worse!! We will now commence our slow return to the new normal, beginning with our protagonist and deuteragonist who are miraculously more or less intact, albeit exhausted and mildly traumatized. Also the words ‘more or less’ are kind of doing a lot of heavy lifting there.”
Today on BnHA: The Big 3 and Aoyama are OUT. Shinsou is IN. The Tododrama is PENDING, and the mysterious figure in the shadows is UNIDENTIFIED. Also class 1-A finally becomes class 2-A and it only took them 425 chapters and TEN LONG YEARS. Can you imagine if this series had actually run throughout their high school experience like people once expected. “THE YEAR IS 2044 AND MY HERO ACADEMIA IS FINALLY WINDING TO A CLOSE.” There’s an alternate universe somewhere where this actually happened and we were all so very, very tired.
This is once again a shorter than usual reaction summary post, as opposed to my typical page-by-page liveblog. Not gonna have time to do those for a while yet most likely, but like hell am I gonna miss out on the last days of the series, so here we are.
Once again basing this off of @pikahlua’s spoiler translation summary here!
watching the eighteen inch tall Rat Principal standing at a podium overseeing this graduation ceremony is surreal in the most wonderful way. it’s like receiving your diploma from a sentient Funko Pop
I love how they established that Mic sitting there screaming at the top of his lungs is also a beloved U.A. graduation tradition, and that the senpais just roll with it while everyone else is in varying stages of trying to decide if it’s too late to transfer to another school
ngl sometimes I forget that Ochako and Toga were actually the second canonical f/f ship in this series. shoutout to Hadou and her adorable girlfriend whose name I absolutely cannot recall
absolutely wild that Horikoshi gives credit to Rat Principal for coordinating the entire disaster recovery nationwide. are you serious. the “world-famous” Principal Nezu?? you’re telling me this little capybara is effectively the secret president of Japan now or something. when does he even sleep
“the principal made great contributions to quirk morality education” is also a VERY interesting tidbit that I really want to know more about. “hey guys what if we did a better job at teaching people not to be dicks with their quirks” AND JUST LIKE THAT JAPAN WAS SAVED huzzah
“we lost many things, but we gained nothing” is both HILARIOUS and soundly depressing, but I can see what he’s trying to get at. still an odd choice for a graduation speech though. “our job is all about harm reduction, and we couldn’t even do that this time around, but in the future we hope to balance things out and maybe even get some net positive impact going!” lmao. again it’s all true, and in all honesty it’s spectacular that they managed as well as they did, all things considered. and I guess it would have been disingenuous to just ignore the reality of everything this particular school body has been through and pretend like everything is great right now. but I still can’t help feeling like there was probably a more inspiring way to get this message across lol
regardless of what he says, Aizawa 100% either bribed or threatened Rat Principal behind the scenes in order to stay with his class. and will do so again next year. he can and will keep getting away with it. he is never leaving these kids
and the sheer relief from all of them upon hearing it is all the justification he needs. these kids have four thousand nine hundred and seventeen accumulated traumas among them. they don’t need a four thousand nine hundred and eighteenth. this man is their father ffs. MINA WAS CRYING AND EVERYTHING
Kacchan watched that YouTube video about a dozen times until he managed to tie his tie all on his own with the one hand. and he did an amazing job. he’s such a model citizen now
also it looks to me like he has his right arm hidden in a sling underneath his shirt, which is interesting. if I’m not mistaken (and I very well could be, since it’s been a hot minute since I did any BnHA timeline math), the final battle took place sometime in early May, so this chapter is taking place roughly one month later. the hospital chapter took place about a week after the battle, so it’s been about 3-4 weeks since then. I really want to know what kind of shape Kacchan’s arm is in, but I guess Horikoshi will get to it when he gets to it
also, “we all gotta be together today” was a real wakeup call to me in that it gave me just an absolutely ridiculous amount of feels. just a totally unreasonable amount. and it’s like. listen, self. Kacchan has completed his character growth arc. he’s a team player and a leader who loves all his friends and they all love him in return. we’ve known this for years now. it’s an established fact. you can’t keep bursting into tears or whatever every time he shows it. this is no way to live your life. I need an intervention
anyways later this evening class 2-A is gonna have a celebratory movie night in the common room, and Kacchan is gonna fall asleep two minutes in peacefully surrounded by all his classmates, and they’re all gonna nudge each other and smile fondly and cover him with a blanket and stay up until 2am and Aizawa will have no mercy on them the following morning. it’s gonna be so wholesome you guys
(ETA: I decided to go back and have some more feels about this one tiny Kacchan panel, because apparently the four paragraphs I already wrote about it weren't enough. so the thing is, Sero's wonderment at Katsuki being out of the hospital initially read to me as half bemused awe, and half "oh boy, time to get back into our usual rhythm of antagonizing Kacchan!" but my second time around, I can't help remembering that all of Kacchan's classmates got to watch this kid getting tortured and strangled and stabbed through the heart in 4K. like, even if they were busy with their own fights at the time, there's no way they didn't see the footage later on afterwards.
and that had to have been traumatic for them. their friend literally died and was just lying there so still for so long afterwards. and him getting better and going back to his usual asskicking self later on doesn't just erase those memories, you know? especially with him having lasting, permanent damage afterward. not just his arm, even! like who even knows if his heart is going to be okay long term. when people get organ transplants they have to go on immunosuppressants afterwards because otherwise their body will try to attack the replacement organ. so I wonder how exactly it works when it's still your heart, but it's being held together by various bits and pieces of a spindly little floss man. idk, but I bet you it's still pretty rough.
anyway so long story short, I'm now reading this as one-third bemused awe, one-third joking antagonism, and one-third genuine "no seriously, is it okay for you to be here, please don't do anything to put your health at risk because we seriously cannot handle you dying on us again." and Kacchan's not even disagreeing with him lol, which has to be the most concerning thing of all. "they said it's okay if I rest." even he knows he's pushing it, but it was too important of an occasion to miss. anyway please take it easy kiddo.)
Aoyama leaving makes me sad but it makes total sense for his character after what he’s been through. he needs time to sort things out and continue down his own personal honor-regaining journey. respect
also glad to hear that it was his own choice and that both Rat Principal and Nao would have supported him if he stayed. I still to this day do not understand Naomasa’s actual level of authority lol. like, he’s supposedly a detective, and yet he seems to be personally in charge of every single important police operation, on like a national level. and he has the authority to make decisions like letting Aoyama go free. he is the law, literally
Aoyama trying to feed Deku some farewell cheese also took me out. like he just walked in there and was all “sorry everyone, I’m leaving, but I’ll still aim for the path of a hero and will one day return, don’t you worry!” and at some point in the midst of this tearful speech he made a beeline directly to Izuku and tried to give him some cheese that he apparently just had in his pocket or something. and Izuku was all “YEAH!” all solemnly but HE DIDN’T EVEN TOUCH THAT POCKET CHEESE. like he loves you and accepts you for who you are Yuuga but COME ON
at this point in the chapter it also became clear to me that Aizawa has his hair up in some sort of loosely assembled messy bun and that’s why it looks so especially flowing and gorgeous today. this is great cinema
and then AT LONG LAST, the admission of Shinsou into class 2-A. they tried everything they could to keep him out, BUT NOT EVEN THE END OF THE WORLD COULD STOP HIM. his rightful place
Ojiro’s scandalized response to hearing Fuwa refer to Aizawa as “Era-sen”, and then Fuwa subsequently revealing all of Aizawa’s secrets and Aizawa getting flustered and kicking her out, was one of the most delightful sequences I’ve read. “nooooo don’t tell them that, what the hell am I gonna threaten them with now”
Izuku has not even attempted to crack a smile since the final battle, aside from when he was frantically trying to reassure Kacchan in the hospital. I’m worried about him but also loving this a little bit, ngl. I am content to wait for you to eventually have a proper breakdown, mister Greatest Hero
also I singled him out on the whole not-smiling thing, but really this is true for just about all of them. my heart aches :(
were there really so many people freaking out over Izuku’s hair that Horikoshi felt compelled to throw in that “HEY DEKU-KUN, YOU SHAVED YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT DUE TO AN INJURY, RIGHT? BUT IT’LL GROW BACK, RIGHT!?” line in there lol. the hilarious thing is that this chapter was already in the books before 424 was released, so it means that Horikoshi anticipated the backlash ahead of time. the man knows his audience
and now for this mysterious little barefoot man randomly emerging from some rubble somewhere. who are you. fandom already thinks you’re everyone from Tenko to Hisashi lol. my personal theory is that he’s just a random citizen who’s hurt and traumatized and needs help. and unlike what happened with baby Tenko once upon a time, this young man actually will be helped by a hero in his moment of need, and it’ll be all hopeful and stuff because SOCIETY IS CHANGING FOR THE BETTER NOW HOORAY
or maybe he really is Tenko, idk. what do I know lol. don’t listen to me
lastly, Shouto out here immediately leaving U.A. after class and ruining my dreams of a class 2-A movie night. FINE THEN. GO AND BE WITH YOUR FAMILY my precious little life preserver. and I’m actually really, really excited to see what their endgame is actually, so yes, Horikoshi, bring it on please and thank you

On one level the book is about the life of a woman who is hardly more than a token in a great epic poem, on another it’s about how history and context shape how we are seen, and the brief moment there is to act between the inescapable past and the unknowable future. Perhaps to write Lavinia Le Guin had to live long enough to see her own early books read in a different context from the one where they were written, and to think about what that means.

still on my spn rewatch, and like. okay. i am not usamerican so i am definitely missing a lot of things here so i haven't mentioned it until now. but there's also something to be said about the class disparity of supernatural. how the hunter life which is both poor and rural is contrasted with the apple pie life which is usually life in the suburbs or the city. and how poverty in rural america is valorized and idealized as somehow more worldly, more knowledgeable, and ultimately more moral than the normal world.

mental illness is getting so invested in reading the Odyssey for your Greek and Roman Lit class that instead of reading books 5-8 of the Odyssey today during your 2 hour gap from 12 - 2 PM between your first class and your Greek and Roman Lit class, you instead read books 5-16 and realize you missed your Greek and Roman Lit class at 2 PM
Because you were too busy reading ahead in the book for that class
I learned an hour later that he had cancelled our class today anyways

Having Feels a 🐠 Dori rambles post
I should probably stop obsessing and repeating myself, but putting together Favorite Things for Heesu In Class 2 is giving me some big feels and I am back to rant. This is one of those series that I love the more I think about it. For every moment I instantly loved, it also gave me lots of moments that made me feel disappointed with the realness it often shoved in our face. So my love for these moments only came with time and perspective.
Tumblr media
The series had a lot going for it. It looked great. Delivered a solid story with complex, real characters and great themes. And the acting was really good, especially Ahn Ji-ho who played Heesu. And every good story needs some angst and pain. Still, I had not expected this series to give me so many feels and watching Heesu struggle with his queer existence was often uncomfortable and hurt. And even though these scenes often left me disappointed and unhappy, those same moments are what ultimately made me respect and love this series.
My anger was never at the story, but at the truth it laid bare
Throw their privilege in their Het faces!
Kat and I already said a lot about our love for this series in our post and shared some great perspectives by other bloggers in this post. And there is a lot more I could say. But there is one scene that I really need to talk about. It felt like a slap in the face and I want to hate it, and part of me does, but I also love it because it felt like the ENTIRE POINT wrapped up in one scene.
It was the final scene. The "happy ending". After showing us a couple of cute moments of Heesu and Seung Won together as a couple, the final moment we got was one where we see Heesu panic only for Seung Won to say they can just play it off as bromance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously?!?
Yes. Seriously. That is how they ended the story and as much as it annoyed me to admit, it was perfect. There were so many layers to this series, but it fundamentally wanted to show the contrast between het and queer relationships in a conservative setting and this scene pulled no punches in driving that final point home. As the het couple gets to walk casually behind in a mirrored posture with none of the risk, none of the fear or hesitation, their privilege and the inequality of their situations was directly called out for the audience. As much as this scene rubbed a nerve they had already made raw during this entire story, I'm also grateful they were brave enough to give us this painfully real, bitterly honest ending.
There was a lot I loved about this series and a lot of moments I am grateful for. But in this moment, in my feelings right now, I am most grateful that this series threw het privilege in peoples' face and asked them to sit with it. And for that reason, I love this ending even if I could have used a little less reality in my happy ending.

𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.
Tumblr media
Just half a year later. Mere four thousand three hundred hours. Squeezed between had been some off days, but generally, Ned had lived through six months of hell. An infinite seeming loop of killing and dying. Uncountable rebirths through technology. Each free moment spent trying to get a hold of his displaced parents. Each foiled plan of establishing contact fueling his belligerence. At least the village itself held enough memories to soothe him into reminiscing better days. Until the dreaded letter was delivered.
The unsigned paper informed Ned of a thing called "location rotation", that BLU's and RED's time on Selbyen was up. Furthermore, they reported that the buildings of Selbyen had been riddled with bullets beyond repair that its upkeep was no longer a viable strategy for the company. Two small passenger airplanes would arrive the following day to take the teams “back” to the USA. Petrified of forever leaving the only place he’d ever known, Ned’s flight instinct overpowered him once more – as it did when Team Fortress Industries had first arrived – and he crammed himself beneath the floorboards in his bedroom that usually held his secrets. That night, he was the secret. An ever so disorganized stampede of indifferent mercenaries boarded the planes, navigated by administratively decreed pilots. A head count only came to one of their minds, halfway across the Atlantic at that. Short of one head – and a bit ashamed of not having noticed earlier – the “bravest” member of BLU was determined by vote and pushed stepped forth to gingerly admit their mistake to their purple pilot. To not delay their arrival any further – transporting a bunch of assassins with twitching, trigger happy fingers and immense boredom was a hazardous job – administration decided to deploy their fallback. Ripped from his Manndatory vacation, The BLU Pilot was tasked to either capture and return The Net… or “terminate his contract”.
Caught staring at the horizon that’d swallowed the plane containing the teammates he’d become accustomed to, the roaring of a small private two-seater plane from behind him left him exposed as a deer in headlights. Hiding quickly turned out to be a futile endeavor with every meter the plane crept closer to the short rocky path serving as an impromptu runway. After short, exasperated exhortation – The Pilot really had better things to do than chauffeur this stubborn fisherman across the globe – Ned agreed that the agonies endured and the time spent getting moderately accustomed to everyone in that half year would’ve been for naught, if he were to cast away his life contract, and therefore his family’s steady income, due to such rashness. After whispering bitter farewells to the sand, the shells, the seagulls and smoking his last cigarette on Norwegian grounds, Ned and his entire life contained in solely the two suitcases they’d found in the cargo hold, entered the airplane. Eighteen hours were spent in the air – it took Ned about four of them to cast a first glance out of the window, viewing the sea from heights he’d never been at in his life – and six hours in different airports for refueling the plane, their stomachs and their minds. After countless amounts of cigarettes smoked inside the cockpit and conversations made unpreventable by the confined space, but eventually appreciated and sought out, the airplane wheels touched American ground. The Badlands await him.
