When the draw went live last year, a participant - rightly - pointed out that posting a link to a spreadsheet listing everyone's likes/ dislikes may not have been the best idea; since the dislikes section allows participants to list potential triggers.
Since the draw was already live, I rectified this by deleting the post and making the document accessible ONLY through being sent a link. This worked perfectly well last year, however (if somebody wanted to be a grade-A prick) they could have taken that link and posted it anywhere.
I've put a lot of thought into it and come to the conclusion that the only *perfect* solution would be to do the entire draw process myself, then individually message everyone who their recipient is, as well as their likes/ dislikes.
Now.
I'd really rather not have to do that, as it's going to make the entire process a lot more involved on my end; there were 56 participants last year (including myself) and I expect that number to be higher this time around since people have been following this blog in the off-season. I am very depressed and very lazy disabled and work so hard and have no monies.
But for the love of god, frotting, AND communism: I WILL pull my thumb out my ass and do that if people prefer it: Answer a poll!

"Just weeks before the implosion of AllHere, an education technology company that had been showered with cash from venture capitalists and featured in glowing profiles by the business press, America’s second-largest school district was warned about problems with AllHere’s product.
As the eight-year-old startup rolled out Los Angeles Unified School District’s flashy new AI-driven chatbot — an animated sun named “Ed” that AllHere was hired to build for $6 million — a former company executive was sending emails to the district and others that Ed’s workings violated bedrock student data privacy principles.
Those emails were sent shortly before The 74 first reported last week that AllHere, with $12 million in investor capital, was in serious straits. A June 14 statement on the company’s website revealed a majority of its employees had been furloughed due to its “current financial position.” Company founder and CEO Joanna Smith-Griffin, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles district said, was no longer on the job.
Smith-Griffin and L.A. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho went on the road together this spring to unveil Ed at a series of high-profile ed tech conferences, with the schools chief dubbing it the nation’s first “personal assistant” for students and leaning hard into LAUSD’s place in the K-12 AI vanguard. He called Ed’s ability to know students “unprecedented in American public education” at the ASU+GSV conference in April.
Through an algorithm that analyzes troves of student information from multiple sources, the chatbot was designed to offer tailored responses to questions like “what grade does my child have in math?” The tool relies on vast amounts of students’ data, including their academic performance and special education accommodations, to function.
Meanwhile, Chris Whiteley, a former senior director of software engineering at AllHere who was laid off in April, had become a whistleblower. He told district officials, its independent inspector general’s office and state education officials that the tool processed student records in ways that likely ran afoul of L.A. Unified’s own data privacy rules and put sensitive information at risk of getting hacked. None of the agencies ever responded, Whiteley told The 74.

In order to provide individualized prompts on details like student attendance and demographics, the tool connects to several data sources, according to the contract, including Welligent, an online tool used to track students’ special education services. The document notes that Ed also interfaces with the Whole Child Integrated Data stored on Snowflake, a cloud storage company. Launched in 2019, the Whole Child platform serves as a central repository for LAUSD student data designed to streamline data analysis to help educators monitor students’ progress and personalize instruction.
Whiteley told officials the app included students’ personally identifiable information in all chatbot prompts, even in those where the data weren’t relevant. Prompts containing students’ personal information were also shared with other third-party companies unnecessarily, Whiteley alleges, and were processed on offshore servers. Seven out of eight Ed chatbot requests, he said, are sent to places like Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Australia and Canada.
Taken together, he argued the company’s practices ran afoul of data minimization principles, a standard cybersecurity practice that maintains that apps should collect and process the least amount of personal information necessary to accomplish a specific task. Playing fast and loose with the data, he said, unnecessarily exposed students’ information to potential cyberattacks and data breaches and, in cases where the data were processed overseas, could subject it to foreign governments’ data access and surveillance rules.
Chatbot source code that Whiteley shared with The 74 outlines how prompts are processed on foreign servers by a Microsoft AI service that integrates with ChatGPT. The LAUSD chatbot is directed to serve as a “friendly, concise customer support agent” that replies “using simple language a third grader could understand.” When querying the simple prompt “Hello,” the chatbot provided the student’s grades, progress toward graduation and other personal information.
AllHere’s critical flaw, Whiteley said, is that senior executives “didn’t understand how to protect data.”

Earlier in the month, a second threat actor known as Satanic Cloud claimed it had access to tens of thousands of L.A. students’ sensitive information and had posted it for sale on Breach Forums for $1,000. In 2022, the district was victim to a massive ransomware attack that exposed reams of sensitive data, including thousands of students’ psychological evaluations, to the dark web.
With AllHere’s fate uncertain, Whiteley blasted the company’s leadership and protocols.
“Personally identifiable information should be considered acid in a company and you should only touch it if you have to because acid is dangerous,” he told The 74. “The errors that were made were so egregious around PII, you should not be in education if you don’t think PII is acid.”

Tencent has released a model that could be quite literally game-changing for how developers create 3D assets.
The new Hunyuan3D-PolyGen model is Tencent’s first attempt at delivering what they’re calling “art-grade” 3D generation, specifically built for the professionals who craft the digital worlds we play in.
Creating high-quality 3D assets has always been a bottleneck for game developers, with artists spending countless hours perfecting wireframes and wrestling with complex geometry. Tencent reckons they’ve found a way to tackle these headaches head-on, potentially transforming how studios approach asset creation entirely.
Levelling up generating 3D assets
The secret sauce behind Hunyuan3D-PolyGen lies in what Tencent calls BPT technology. In layman’s terms, it means they’ve figured out how to compress massive amounts of 3D data without losing the detail that matters. In practice, that means it’s possible to generate 3D assets with tens of thousands of polygons that actually look professional enough to ship in a commercial game.

What’s particularly clever is how the system handles both triangular and quadrilateral faces. If you’ve ever tried to move 3D assets between different software packages, you’ll know why this matters. Different engines and tools have their preferences, and compatibility issues have historically been a nightmare for studios trying to streamline their workflows.
According to technical documentation, the system utilises an autoregressive mesh generation framework that performs spatial inference through explicit and discrete vertex and patch modelling. This approach ensures the production of high-quality 3D models that meet stringent artistic specifications demanded by commercial game development.
Hunyuan3D-PolyGen works through what’s essentially a three-step dance. First, it takes existing 3D meshes and converts them into a language the AI can understand.
Using point cloud data as a starting point, the system then generates new mesh instructions using techniques borrowed from natural language processing. It’s like teaching the AI to speak in 3D geometry, predicting what should come next based on what it’s already created.
Finally, the system translates these instructions back into actual 3D meshes, complete with all the vertices and faces that make up the final model. The whole process maintains geometric integrity while producing results that would make any technical artist nod in approval.

Nobody asked but, this is for the beginners just starting to study Chinese or Japanese as English speakers (or Germanic or Romance Language speakers). Especially beginners who have never studied another language, and don't know the usual process of "what improvements you see after X study."
Some languages will take more hours to hit improvement milestones than others, depending on the languages you already know. For English speakers, many Germanic and Romance languages will take the least amount of hours to see progress milestones. For English speakers (or Germanic or Romance Language speakers) some of the languages that will take the most hours to see progress milestones include Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean.
I see a bunch of beginners who study Japanese go "I've been studying 15-30 minutes a day for years, and still can't understand anything!" or even "I've studied 2 hours a day for months, and still can't understand anything!" Well... if as an English speaker, you study French, you'll get a LONG way in 2 hours a day of study for 6 months, that's a little over 364 hours in 6 months, which makes you Upper Beginner/Lower Intermediate in French, and able to start reading graded readers and listening to podcasts for learners. 2 hours of Japanese study a day for 6 months is not enough to get to the point to reading graded reader and listening to podcasts for learners... try 4 hours a day or 6 hours a day (2-3x the study time to reach the same milestones). 30 minutes a day for a few years in French is ~182 hours a year, so 2 years would be enough to start doing intermediate things in the language (graded readers, learner podcasts, easier reading material and shows if the learner is willing to look up words). For Japanese, it would take 4-6 years to reach that point if you're only studying 30 minutes a day!
You aren't "not learning anything" if you study 30 minutes a day, you just need to be realistic! If you're studying Japanese, it's going to take 2-4x more hours of study to hit progress milestones. (Less times more if you've studied languages before and streamlined your study plan, more times the hours if you fumble for a while with figuring out your study plan and what works for you). FSI estimates that the quickest language for English speakers take ~30 weeks(at 40 hours a week), and the hardest languages at ~88 weeks. So 1200 hours for a language like French, 3520 hours for a language like Japanese. So Japanese takes ~2.93 times more study hours to reach the same progress milestones (or around ~3 time more study hours).
My point here is: either study more hours per day if you want to hit progress milestones within a certain months/year time frame, or recognize it is simply going to take more days/months/years of study to hit your progress milestones if you are studying a language very unlike the ones you already know.
You probably ARE learning Japanese if you're studying daily or regularly. You're probably making fine progress, after you work on your study plan and figure out what works for you. You probably are just not hitting progress milestones in as little study hours as you would in a language similar to ones you know. So you think you're not making progress, because the person learning French is 'able to do so much more than you after studying less hours'! You are making progress! It just takes more study hours if you are studying a language unlike ones you already know.
*Note: not all people will hit their progress milestone goals in as few hours as FSI estimates. I am just including these FSI estimates as a nice estimate I can find. For many people, it will take an extra several hundred hours or an extra thousand hours to hit B2. You're not broken if it takes you 4500 hours to learn Japanese to upper intermediate, or if it takes you 2000 hours to learn French to upper intermediate. That is also quite normal, especially if you don't know what study plan works best for you for a while. The point is: languages very similar to ones you know will take less study hours, compared to languages very different to ones you know.
