LONG ANALYSIS POST

Kitsunami the Fennec was Hypnotized by Starline for a very specific purpose.

Throughout Imposter Syndrome # 1, 2, 3 and 4 Kit and Surge are ALWAYS together, even during Imp #1 Tests. The Montage from Imp #3 shows us their various failures and Near-Deaths

We only see one Person during each panel, except for the Panel with Kit inside a Water Bubble. Even though we see one person, this doesn't rule out the possibility that the other is in the same room / vicinity of the focused person.

My Assumption is this: See that Panel where Kit is cowering in fear? Where Starline is yelling about Surge already being on her Test run? Did Kit abandon Surge because of the Psychological Trauma that the tests did to him? Did Kitsunami "Look out for her, No Matter What" the Fennec cower in Fear and leave Surge by herself and she suffered an Accident? What about the rest, did Surge suffer because Kit wasn't being supportive enough? (This is speculative, not a fact)

Those Hypnotizing Sessions might not have been as strong as the Fandom thinks they are. In fact, I just wanna point something out.

That "Programming" from Belle was for their Personalities (Punkish, Rough, Destructive, Timidness, Soft-spoken, Energetic, etc.) NOT their Desires / Motives (That's what the Hypnosis was for, and even then....). Their Hypnosis isn't some Code, it's a ""Suggestion"", a Very Strong Suggestion but a suggestion nonetheless.

Where am I going with this? Kitsunami was given the Motive "Support Surge, do anything for Surge" (Paraphrasing). Let's talk about his Eyes.

WARNING: Hyper Analysis of a small detail that is most likely just because of his Hair and making him seem sadder.

His eyes lack a Shine to them (The White Dots on a person's pupils), every character has them... except for Eggman's Robots and Kit (on purpose). His eyes DO shine but it's rare and deliberately placed (At least one of them is).

Watching the News from inside his Blanket in Issue #53 (After hearing Surge was dead btw)

Seeing Surge smile at him and rub his head in Issue #54

#55 is most likely just a mistake on the artist(s) / colorist(s) / Lighting.

The "You light up. The WHOLE WORLD lights up" speech in #71 (How sweet....)

Kit's eyes only shine during very specific moments. A decision and desire to help Sonic fight the mysterious Attacker on the News. Being reunited with Surge. Remembering how Happy Surge was when they were called Heroes at the end of Issue #70's Race.

Do you see the Shine in his eyes? How.... Happy he looks. Kit's eyes NEVER shined that bright before, not even after Starline was done with the Hypnosis sessions, after Surge praised him or asked for his help during all the Imposter Syndrome issues. His eyes didn't shine even once.

I think the Shine might in some way, show what Kitsunami really wants / when he's really happy. Kitsunami may have had the Motive to "Support Surge" but I think what he REALLY wants above all, is to see her as Happy as she was in #70 and he'll do ANYTHING to see it again. It doesn't matter if he's following what Starline wanted, making Surge happy is something Kit decided on his own.

.....Or it's just a lighting Detail :p.

"Being Loyal to Someone doesn't mean you Love them." As much as the two get conflated, Kit didn't seem to be this Enthusiastic about helping Surge or as Gentle as he is currently. Now? There's Love behind that Loyalty & Support.

Today's compilation:

Sampler EP Volume 1 1990 Techno / Abstract

Whoo, boy, what a tremendous record here, folks. Back in 1990, techno godfather Juan Atkins had only 500 copies of this little white-label 12-inch pressed up for his tiny Interface label, with each track recorded in his very own, now-mythical Metroplex Studios in Detroit. And if you were one of the few people who were actually lucky enough to get your mitts on this thing, you had access to some truly stunning morsels of foundationally raw, electro-inspired, dystopian fire that still go hard to this very day 🤯.

So, I think the best tune out of all of these comes from a guy named Neuropolitique, who was originally from Britain, but ended up making his way to the Motor City in the 80s, and immersed himself in the burgeoning underground techno scene there. On this record, he unleashes "Mind U Don't Trip," a snazzy and abstract bit of gold that lays some mind-bogglingly eerie and echoing, nuclear wintry flute stabs over a rough bassline and punching drums. Three-plus decades later, this is still one of the single-wildest pieces of techno that's probably ever been created.

But also not to be missed is the record's first cut, Detroit legend Anthony "Shake" Shakir's "Sonar 123," which really loads itself up on an assortment of chemical bleeps and bloops, and cinches it all together with this thin line of high-pitched digital squealing. And the closing tune, "Surkit," by Reel by Real, has a series of cool, bleepy, and bubbly synth melodies that all manage to run into each other over a set of simple, yet majestic string pads, which end up lending some wondrous depth to the whole production.

These tracks are a whole lot easier to find now, but what would remain undeniable is that what was being done on this record itself was a truly historic thing, regardless of how many people had actually heard it. So, in that sense, a release like this might as well be techno's equivalent of The Velvet Underground & Nico.

Chapter 4- Part 10

Hey, it’s the lady and her Stufful again! I had a feeling we’d be seeing her again, and we’ve got exactly what she needs (assuming she’s still having issues with her Stufful at all).

I mean…

I MEAN…

I specifically bought one for a reason!! For this reason!! Is there something else Xera needs to do before she can give that lady the Common Candy? Maybe this purple-haired guy will have something to say about it?

Oooh…oh, that’s why we couldn’t give her the Candy…

…Well, sorry sir, but your sister is just kinda dumb in that case. The solution is literally right there in the Bag, JUST TAKE THE CANDY!

Welp, ah- still not planning on using these any time soon, but um…it’s nice that we have three now, I guess?

Back to the outdoors, down Crystal Street we go, hey there’s a guy we can fight-

YOU!! Funny that we’re seeing a Surskit in battle after having just caught one, huh?

But here’s the worrying thing: still raining, still boosting Water-type moves, and now it’s Lv. 12- the highest-leveled Pokémon we’ve fought so far. I do have one idea, though, but it might be scary depending on Surkit’s moves…

I use Streak’s Sand Attack to lower its Accuracy and try to beat it that way, but Quick Attack and STAB- and Rain-boosted Bubble do a number on his health. At the very least, this one doesn’t have Rain Dish because it’s not healing by itself- it must have Swift Swim, then.

To keep Streak from drowning, I switch into Summer. Scary if this Surskit knows any Bug-type moves, but the main play here is to have Summer use Growth to boost some of its stats, then Grasswhistle to make Surskit fall asleep.

And once again, the coin toss goes in my favor! No Bug-type moves either! From here, Summer should be able to just Mega Drain the last of Surskit’s health away.

Buddy, Xera just took out your bug even after it was at least a level higher than her whole team, I think they’ve all got enough swag.

Still, throwing a random Lv. 12 Pokémon at us like that- reminds me of that one Fisherman’s Lv. 10 Goldeen. I wonder if that, like the Goldeen, was just some one-off thing to keep us on our toes or something.

At any rate, we continue on our way-

And here we are! There’s still that East Side area to explore, though- I saw a lady on the street earlier, those two ninja-looking guys up top, and a new Pokémon Center. New Trainers to encounter, surely, but before we go there…what’s this building here?

Oh! Neither of those two look like generic NPCs! We’ve got mint-haired person and SWAT team wannabe. This must be something plot-related, but if so…let’s heal at the previous Pokémon Center first, then check and see.

But hold up- can we go into this building?

Nope, sealed off like the other one. Okay, fine, let’s see what story stuff is happening over here.

Note: This is set up like a Q&A session. All questions will be answered by myself.

Question:

What inspired the making of this fic?

Answer:

The short answer is the Folger's incest commercial.

The longer answer is that phantom-fleetways and I sort of have a running joke. The way it goes is we witness fans of a canonically strong (but ambiguous) bond in media brand the relationship as being canonically adopted siblings (in a practically blood related manner), often as a way to keep people from shipping them. In the case of Kit and Surge, who are neither related nor canonically adoptive siblings, they are canonically codependent. Their relationship is not "normal". We happen to believe that if they were for some reason branded as "siblings" in IDW canon, the two would continue to be weird about each other and it would not erase the codependent nature of their relationship (code: If they were siblings, the relationship would be neither normal nor healthy). So, when people insist that Surge and Kitsunami are canonically completely normal and healthy siblings while keeping their canon actions involving each other in mind (such as Kitsunami per Ian Flynn being willing to drown someone Surge hooks up with), we joke that those people's idea of healthy normal siblings must be the Folger's incest commercial, or that they've given the characters a sibling complex.

How did you two start writing this fic?

Answer:

I've discussed it in another post before, but I've been trying to get back into writing fic again. Life is crazy right now, and creating is hard, so I've taken to doing writing warm ups to excercise my writing muscles again.

One recent exercise I've taken a liking to involves two people. You set a timer, and both people start writing a fic. Once time is up, both participants swap fics with each other, and they set the timer again. This process then repeats until either the fics/stories are completed, or until the participants can no longer write. Whether the rules of the exercise allow each person to tell the other the prompt their following, or whether both must go in blind is up to the people involved.

As with "Am I Vital", this fic was originally written as a warm up under the excercise described, and the two of us collectively decided to post said warm up.

Question:

You posted the previous warm up excercise on tumblr. Why the switch to AO3 this time around?

Answer:

We have two main reasons for doing so.

The first is that, compared to "Am I Vital", this fic has a much higher word count and was closer to being a fully realized fic. It hardly qualifies as a warm up drabble.

The second is because we may potentially be planning on revisiting "Am I Vital" one day. If we do, then a more refined/edited and fleshed out version of the fic will be posted on AO3. If not, the original warm up will at least remain for people to be able to read. By contrast, though "The Best Part of Waking Up" remains a final draft with minimal editing compared to the rough, the two of us put in as much work as we desired to put into it. It is unlikely that we will be rewriting it in the future.

Why did you choose to post this for April Fools day?

Answer:

Very well. I can explain the joke here in case it is unclear to anyone who's read or is planning on reading the fic.

The joke is not: "We intend to make fun of people who ship Surge and Kitsunami by making them siblings"

The joke is: "This is how it looks when people depict the characters as if they're canonically siblings"

Just for some background here, Surge and Kit are not blood related in this fic. They were not even created to be adoptive siblings. The premise hinges on the idea that after Surge and Kit were created and began to work under Dr. Starline, Dr. Starline was concerned by their attachment to each other. In an attempt to do away with the possibility of Surge and Kitsunami becoming romantically involved, sexually involved, etc, he began to insist that the two were siblings. However, Dr. Starline's plan backfires. Rather than take on the relationship of normal siblings (familial bond following) after being told this, what Surge and Kit get out of Starline's repeated insistence is that their relationship is what peak siblinghood is. At the end of the day, they end up confusing a partnership that is arguably closer to being queerplatonic in nature for the idea that the strongest, most transcendant bond someone can have with another person is defined as siblinghood.

This is the joke. They mistakenly believe their bond is that of siblings and their behavior/feelings are a normal part of siblinghood. It makes it read like this au version of Surge and Kit have a fauxcest kink.

Sonic Boom AU?

Answer:

Yes! I'm not going to get into too many details here, as we have yet to fully flesh out this au, but, yes, phantom-fleetways and I are potentially working on a Sonic Boom AU. Our initial reason for crafting this AU was so we could work Surge, Kitsunami, and Dr. Starline into the world of Sonic Boom, with an added bonus of potentially being an outlet for writing some Sonic Boom level skits of our own. We've even been in talks of maybe adding in our own au versions of the Anti-Sonic, Anti-Tails, and Anti-Mobius setup from the Archie Sonic comic 🤫

Answer:

Answer:

Nope! Although the point of this fic is that Surge and Kit very much are not siblings, nor are they adoptive siblings, the fauxcest element is written completely straight. We are also solidly of the opinion that these two are not canonically siblings, nor are they being "coded" to be, but feel free to enjoy this fic if you're into that trope.

Answer:

The message on the card fits pretty well, doesn't it? But, no. That was a coincidence. Surge bought a custom choker for Kitsunami while she was out on her trip. The business she bought it from prints "Forever Mine" in silver lettering on the back of all of their business cards.

Sonar 123 1993 Techno / Abstract

Yesterday I was expecting to hear some techno on a 12-inch that Discogs had billed as such and didn't get any, but today I received techno in full! Back in 1993, the UK-based Peacefrog Records released this four-song 12-inch called Sonar 123 that licensed tracks from techno godfather Juan Atkins' own tiny label, Interface Records. All of these songs were recorded in 1990 in Atkins' now-mythical Metroplex Studios in Detroit and the first three were originally released on a 1990 white label 12-inch, of which only 500 copies were ever pressed. So the fact that Peacefrog was able to license these tracks meant that the UK was finally gonna get some of this sweet and mysteriously rare techno into their unfilled earholes.

The best song on here is by far Juan Atkins' own "Sunlight," made under his Infiniti moniker, which isn't from that rare white label 12-inch. It's hard to make a techno song in 1990 that's more perfect than this one. Awesome, mellow synth pads, a uniquely fuzzy bassline, and excellently bleepy and snaky lead melodies that both alternate and intertwine. Just really historic dance shit with that track.

Neuropolitique, whom I've posted about before, delivers a snazzy and abstract one too. The drums and bassline are pretty rough, but those nuclear winter stabbing flute synths will leave you scratching your head as to how someone was even capable of producing their synth work to sound like that in 1990. It's fuckin’ wild.

And then there's Reel By Real's "Surkit," which also has cool, bleepy lead synth melodies that all run into each other at the end before the track sharply cuts off. Oh yeah, all of these songs just kinda sharply cut off at the end. Kinda adds to the mysteriousness of the whole record, I guess; like they were dug up, unfinished fossils or something; the Detroit equivalent of Pompeiians before Vesuvius started spouting its lava.

Good Detroit techno 12-inch here, from some of the genre's very earliest of days.
