One Swedish expression that I enjoy is "käpprätt åt helvete", meaning straight as a kane to hell. Not only did the thing go bad, it went as bad as it could in the least amount of time, there was not even a grain of success made. It went to jail without passing "go".

sometimes i think about how swedish is a really weird language so here are some literally translated swedish words
flodhäst - river horse (hippo)
igelkott - leech [pine] cone (hedgehog)
tvättbjörn - wash bear (raccoon)
sugrör - suck pipe (straw)
dammsugare - dust sucker (vaccuum cleaner)
tandkött - tooth meat (gums, my personal favorite)
späckhuggare - lard stabber (orca/killer whale. lard is pig fat)
and some words that have completely innocent meanings in swedish but very different ones in english
fack - compartment
slut - end (which is where you get the lovely slutstation)
fart - speed
puss - kiss
bra - good
prick - spot
prat - talk
kant - edge
kock - chef

Hey Swedish side of Tumblr!
Me and a friend are interested in learning Swedish, but we’re not sure where to begin looking for resources
I want to avoid Duolingo’s AI garbage and slow pace, but I would appreciate any recommendations for dedicated Swedish learning apps/websites/videos/whatever!
(Preferably free, but a one-time payment would be fine ig; I don’t want to do repeated payments if I can avoid it)

Swedish word of the day:
kramsnö
literally "hugging snow", snow that is adhesive enough that you can form snowballs, snowmen etc from it
krama = hug, but also squeeze or press together

Note
Regarding nicknames, in Sweden nicknames almost always have two syllables. Henry's nickname would NOT be hen! Hen is the gender neutral pronoun in Sweden.

One fun thing about the Swedish language and culture, is that the word Liga ("league"). Has a negative connotation. There are "criminal leagues", like skomakarligan ("the shoemaker league") and Sandhamnsligan ("The Sandhamn-league"). And a "ligapojke" (l"eague-boy") is an old word for a scoundrel.
And the reason for this, is said to be that Sweden fought the Catholic League during the thirty years' war. It is only recently that the word has gotten used in other ways than that, thanks to European sport leagues. The word is barely used in the Swedish Wikipedia article of Fotbollsallsvenskan ("'Football All-Swedish"). Instead, the word Division is used instead or parallel to Liga.
