Yes, the game tries to read everything in the downloads folder which just wastes time if it’s not actually a file the game can use. I’ve heard someone say they keep their downloads stuff in a separate folder and use Syncback to sync only the .package files; you might also just keep a dummy downloads folder organized in the exact same way but with pictures and readmes instead of packages.

While we’re still discussing load times and downloads folders, it’s also worth noting that long filenames/folder names and many layers of subfolders also reportedly slows down the game - the longer the path it has to take to read the package, the longer it takes to read the package. And I'm not 100% sure this makes a difference, but I avoid spaces and special characters even in the folder names.

We’ve spent the last week or so moving all our projects into a Subversion repository. This was a rather big development move for us, so I spent a fair amount of time researching Subversion, and more specifically, Subversion on MacOS X. The basics of Subversion have been pretty well covered by everyone else, but OS X specific Subversion material is a bit lacking. So I took some notes during the entire setup process, and present them here.

Subversion Basics: Adam Swift wrote a good set of instructions for installing Subversion, both client and server on OS X. It covers all the standard ways of installing Subversion on OS X. Syncback freeware.

For actually using Subversion, one has to look no further then Version Control with Subversion, available in both download and dead-tree formats. It really covers everything quite throughly, and is worth reading cover-to-cover if you have the time. There’s a section for CVS users in the back, if you are switching.

Subversion and MacOS X 10.2: It seems that all the pre-built copies of Subversion, are 10.3-only builds. For various reasons, we still do our development work on 10.2 (thats a story for another post). It also seems that nobody else has documented how to build Subversion for 10.2. So after a bit of experimenting I came up with this script that will successfully build Subversion 1.0.6 on 10.2. We had trouble with building 1.1.0rc1, so we are sticking with 1.0.6 until 1.1.0 is officially done (“real soon now” they say).

Subversion and older Interface Builder:

Old versions of Interface Builder (pre Xcode 1.2) don’t play well with Subversion. They will either delete Subversion’s “.svn” directories, issue “read-only nib file” errors, or do both.

There are oldworkarounds for some of these problems, but nothing that was complete for our working environment.

So, inspired by SubversionPalette (which was inspried by OmniCVSPalette), I wrote SVNPalette. Just download it and drop it into /Develop/Palettes or ~/Library/Palettes, and all older copies of Interface Builder will then behave toward Subversion as they should (that is, completely transparently).

Subversion and OS X specific configuration Although it isn’t well documented, there are some client side Subversion configuration settings that can make svn nicer. They are stored in: ~/.subversion/config. Here is the interesting part of my configuration file:

The “global-ignores” line is the default global-ignores, with the addition of “*.pbxuser” and “build”. This keeps pbxuser files and build folders out of the results of “svn status”, where they are just clutter.

The three auto-props lines make sure that pbxuser files are always marked as binary, they default to being treated as text otherwise. This is a way of fully automating Bill Bumgarner’s original solution for pbxuser files.

Fancy OS X-only Subversion tools: If you are using OS X 10.3 (which I suspect just about all of you are), there are a few handy Subversion tools avaliable: svnX and SCPlugin.

svnX is a very impressive Subversion graphical frontend. It won’t save you from having to learn the Subversion command-line interface, but for a lot of everyday browsing tasks, it is quite nice.

SCPlugin is a Finder plugin that lets you issue Subversion commands on your working copy directly in the Finder. It also adds nifty status badges to the file and folder icons in your working copy.

I wrote an article about a year ago, about svn (Subversion) being missing in Mountain Lion (10.8) and how to install it manually. Since then, I’ve got a new mac and have used myself this post to install it on the new machine. Since then there has also been new versions of subversion but unfortunately all my software are not compatible with it. So I’ve been looking into this topic again and wanted to share.

Another way to install svn on mac is to use a ditribution package from wandisco. They are available here. Do not use the packages on CollabNet which are outdated. Unzip the .pkg file and double click on it and follow the instructions to have it installed.

I still like it better with Homebrew since it makes it very easy to upgrade the packages and switch between packages.

If you get errors in XCode while accessing working copies created with a newer version, you might need to link the newer version into XCode by doing the following:

Create a backup directory for the svn binaries currently used by XCode

Moving the current binaries to the backup folder

Linking the binaries of the new version installed with Homebrew into Xcode (as a replacement for the moved ones)

You can do that by executing the following and replacing 1.7.4 by the actual subversion version you want to use in XCode:

Note that you can also use Homebrew-versions instead. It provides multiple formulas for different versions of existing packages e.g. subversion1.6 and subversion1.7. If you use it, you will of course not be able to upgrade from 1.7 to 1.8 but only from 1.7.2 to 1.7.3 but it’s maybe what you are after…

You’ll notice that Homebrew-versions only has packages for subversion 1.6 and 1.7. But I guess 1.8 should come soon.

So there are quite a few ways to install subversion on your mac and handle different versions. The one I like best is still just installing it with Homebrew and switching to the one I use most. The other versions are still available by other switching to a particular version as shown above or by using the svn command from a particular version in the Homebrew Cellar e.g.

PSA - Check the health of your hard drives

I just got done dealing with my very sick computer, a failing hard drive, causing repeated 'unexpected store exception' BSODs and frequent freezes. I actually had 2 bad drives, it turned out, though one was only in the early stages of failure with a number of bad sectors, but still overall working OKish, the other one was so far gone it caused a S.M.A.R.T failure, which is prompted me to look at all the drives, because that showed up at the boot screen. And it could not even be detected properly by the disk analysis software

The one that really failed, E, was where i dumped my movie files, so on the one hand, at least it was not holding anything irreplaceable, no family photos, or artwork, etc. But on the other hand, it also wasn't being backed up, for precisely that reason, since i was a little short on backup space. Besides the boot drive (a SSD, and not really meant to hold much besides the OS and program files, except games which went on D) i had 3 2TB drives, and only one was in good shape. It was the internal backup drive, which is something everyone should have for just such an occasion, the contents of my main drive were being copied to it. So, you know, at least all my STUFF was safe, i had 2 current copies of everything important, and I do also keep copies of some especially important files on the cloud, but i do not pay for extra space, so it doesn't hold enough for everything. But the movies were not being backed up, and stuff going on to E was at high risk of getting corrupted. So i likely have some corrupted movie files. But I selected some favorites that were not available on streaming here, and backed those up, and we can sort out later which are good and which are bad. So, got to work uninstalling/deleting unnecessary things. Mainly games on Steam, since those could easily be reinstalled, except the super-modded beasts like, well, all of Bethesda's games, and the Sims 3 and 4, which just... live permanently on my computer even if i haven't played them in a while, because reinstalling all those mods would be a HUGE pain. (I am a mod addict, please help)

It is at this point i have to plug the backup software I use, it saved my ass. It's called SyncBackFree, and as the name implies, it is a completely free backup program. What I love about it is that unlike SOME backup software, it has an option to mirror, so if i delete something on the source, it will also get deleted on the backup, so you don't end up with a continual buildup of unneeded clutter files that got deleted ages ago on the source drive. It also has a scheduling system (though admittedly one that is not very intuitive to use) that will keep things backed up continually without you having to actively remember to do it. And restoring from the backups is as simple as hitting 'restore', and you can pause at any time, if needed, during those big jobs. So because i was already using that, mostly i just made sure everything was backing up as it should, and did current runs on the ones that backed up infrequently. (some folders get backed up every few days because they get changed frequently, others only every couple months because they rarely change) The games especially, since that one changes a lot, and i created a temporary profile to backup at least some of the movies, and the entirety of the C drive, (what could be backed up anyway, some C drive system files are blocked) because i was considering my options as I was doing this. And, on my dad's recommendation, i decided to replace the boot drive as well. It was still good, but it was a bit small, and getting old, it was already a second hand drive when i got it, so.... And I decided to get a single 4TB drive to replace the 2 failing 2 TB hard drives. I probably could have gone with 3TB,because it wasn't like i had either one all the way full, not even close, but, for some bizarre reason, the 4TB was cheaper than the 3TB on Amazon, so... may as well. Ordered the drives, and as i waited for them, created an external backup of my backup, just to be extra safe (I had one, but it was old, so updated it) The new drives arrived the other day, and so plugged them all in, after copying the C drive, and now I am using SyncBack to restore all my stuff from the backup drive. And my computer is doing good again, though I have a lot of games to reinstall, even games that have all the files there (as mentioned, i did not uninstall the games that were heavily modded) are not being registered by Steam, so... yeah, gotta reinstall them all. But at least that is pretty easy with Steam. My plan for the backup, now that I have a source drive twice as large as the backup drive, is to back up C to D, and D to F (E is now gone, i could rename them, but the backup software is all set up to work with F, so meh, whatever, it works) and just be really selective with which games and movies get backed up, and the 2 TB backup should be ok.

One thing I found surprising though was how much faster and smoother my computer runs without the bad drive in there. It's remarkable how a bad drive you're not even actively using as anything but a media dump can gum up the works that badly. And like, it sneaks up on you, as the drive goes from just.... a little bad, to outright failing, so you don't realize it's happening, until it gets really bad, and your computer begins crashing, and it just decides to freeze for like 20 seconds at random intervals. But, at least it was just a media drive, and if anything is corrupted, it's probably files that are not irreplaceable, so there's that. Anyway, this has been a PSA to check the health of your hard drives. I should have caught this much sooner, but i had not been checking the health of the drives.
