Just for the sake of clarity, I'm skipping Devlab (2004) because it's an industrial noise album and because I have nothing else to say about it than "the songs are just dissonant noise. This isn't to my tastes." I don't see the appeal of noise as a genre, but to those who like it, godspeed. I respect your tastes. I don't understand, but I respect it.
I'm also skipping The Hummer (2006) because it's also very ambient and abstract and I don't have much else to say than "wow, I didn't expect this from a metal musician. It's very interesting, though."
So, let's move on to Synchestra (2006).
Wow okay! I didn't expect this either from a metal musician! Let It Roll and the start of Hypergeek start with a whimsical, light and airy vibe that wouldn't sound out of place n a children's movie. This just reminds me how badly I want a movie where Townsend composes the soundtrack to. Give it to my eyeballs and eardrums.
The latter half of Hypergeek, though, very suddenly and loudly shifts the genre back to heavy metal, the sound that continues to Triumph.
Triumph is... a trip. It takes a brief, calm banjo break in the middle before getting back to the heavy metal. I'm really enjoying these shifts and transformations.
Vampolka is another fun banger. I'll give you two guesses as to what its gimmick is lol
Gaia and Pixillate are two other incredible bangers that take a lot of twists and turns.
Overall, this is a fun album that's very interesting to listen to. All the different genres and styles blend together surprisingly well and create a hypnotic kaleidoscope of sound.
