Today I Learned: Street Fighter (1994) Edition!

Director Stephen E. De Souza was only given a day to write the first draft of the script. He felt that writing an over the top fighting tournament movie was right up his alley. However Capcom had other plans...

Street Fighter was still in its early days and Capcom had no idea what to do with it. Ideas were being tossed around left and right.

Hasbro (and by extention GI Joe) currently had the toy rights to Street Fighter. Capcom thought it was the perfect idea for the franchise going forward.

Jean-Claude Van Damme wasn't Capcom's first choice for Guile, but he was the biggest name they could afford on a budget of 30 million. De Souza even told them about his accent, but Capcom watched his films in Japanese and had no idea.

Raul Julia was always going to be Bison though (RIP king).

Sometimes actors weren't even told about fights they were going to be in.

T Hawk was supposed to be in the movie game, but the second Greg Rainwater finished all his work for the film, he left. Man pulled a Dee Jay. He got his check and dipped.

(OK so I don't remember if I'm correct about this or not, but I vaguely remember hearing about this in at least 1 retrospective so here it is anyway.) Capcom originally wanted Fabio (yes, that one) to be Vega, but they already spent all the budget on JCVD and Raul Julia, so the idea was scrapped.

The voice of the spirit, only I can hear it. :V So lately I've been enjoying the based kino game of the year, Street Fighter 6. Of the base roster, Lily is definitely my favorite, since she's essentially T. Hawk Jr. :B
