fwiw as i said in the previous post conversations with friends won me over very quickly (it's not quite 100% true that i can tell within a page if i'm going to like a book - topics of conversation, which i wound up really liking, had me sort of waffling throughout the first chapter until the first chapter's end was clarifying - but it is true that i typically pick up extremely quickly on whether i think a book is well-written and i have virtually never continued reading and changed my mind - and in the cases where i did, like to some extent topics of conversation, it's to my memory been a matter of some kind of unconventional style choice i wasn't sure about; conventionally written books give themselves away almost immediately to my ear) - but the line that made me involuntarily smile to myself on the subway and thus signaled that i was really all in was "I concluded that some kinds of reality have an unrealistic effect, which made me think of the theorist Jean Baudrillard, though I had never read his books and these were probably not the issues his writing addressed."
#didn't realize it was a book about how stupid 21 year olds are#but in a way that is lovingly affirming of the human right of 21 year olds to be stupid#i love that genre. see also the t. c. boyle short story 'tooth and claw'#which i read in high school as a weird story about an adult#and reread as an adult and realized was very much This#bookblogging#conversations with friends#it's the final clause that makes it

i went to a used book sale today... procured:
railroad color history: new york central railroad (brian solomon & mike schafer) — i'm not actually that into trains but it appealed to me.
the complete guide to the soviet union (jennifer louis & victor louis) — travel guide from 1980
an anthology including the big sleep (raymond chandler), "the undignified melodrama of the bone of contention" (dorothy l. sayers), "the arrow of god" (leslie charteris), "i can find my way out" (ngaio marsh), instead of evidence (rex stout), "rift in the loot" (stuart palmer & craig rice), "the man who explained miracles" (john dickson carr), & rebecca (daphne du maurier) (i already have this one..) — it's volume 2 of something (a treasury of great mysteries) which annoys me but whatever
an anthology including "godmother tea" (selena anderson), "the apartment" (t. c. boyle), "a faithful but melancholy account of several barbarities lately committed" (jason brown), "sibling rivalry" (michael byers), "the nanny" (emma cline), "halloween" (mariah crotty), "something street" (carolyn ferrell), "this is pleasure" (mary gaitskill), "in the event" (meng jin), "the children" (andrea lee), "rubberdust" (sarah thankam mathews), "it's not you" (elizabeth mccracken), "liberté" (scott nandelson), "howl palace" (leigh newman), "the nine-tailed fox explains" (jane pek), "the hands of dirty children" (alejandro puyana), "octopus vii" (anna reeser), "enlightenment" (william pei shih), "kennedy" (kevin wilson), & "the special world" (tiphanie yanique) — i guess they're all short stories published in 2020 by usamerican/canadian authors
an anthology including the death of ivan ilyich (leo tolstoy) (i have already read this one..), the beast in the jungle (henry james), heart of darkness (joseph conrad), seven who were hanged (leonid andreyev), abel sánchez (miguel de unamuno), the pastoral symphony (andré gide), mario and the magician (thomas mann), the old man (william faulkner), the stranger (albert camus), & agostino (alberto moravia)
the ambassadors (henry james)
the world book desk reference set: book of nations — it's from 1983 so this is kind of a history book...
yet another fiction anthology......... including the general's ring (selma lagerlöf), "mowgli's brothers" (rudyard kipling), "the gift of the magi" (o. henry) (i have already read this one..), "lord mountdrago" (w. somerset maugham), "music on the muscatatuck" (jessamyn west), "the pacing goose" (jessamyn west), "the birds" (daphne du maurier), "the man who lived four thousand years" (alexandre dumas), "the pope's mule" (alphonse daudet), "the story of the late mr. elvesham" (h. g. wells), "the blue cross" (g. k. chesterton), portrait of jennie (robert nathan), "la grande bretèche" (honoré de balzac), "love's conundrum" (anthony hope), "the great stone face" (nathaniel hawthorne), "germelshausen" (friedrich gerstäcker), "i am born" (charles dickens), "the legend of sleepy hollow" (washington irving), "the age of miracles" (melville davisson post), "the long rifle" (stewart edward white), "the fall of the house of usher" (edgar allan poe) (i have already read this one..), the voice of bugle ann (mackinlay kantor), the bridge of san luis rey (thornton wilder), "basquerie" (eleanor mercein kelly), "judith" (a. e. coppard), "a mother in mannville" (marjorie kinnan rawlings), "kerfol" (edith wharton), "the last leaf" (o. henry), "the bloodhound" (arthur train), "what the old man does is always right" (hans christian anderson), the sea of grass (conrad richter), "the sire de malétroit's door" (robert louis stevenson), "the necklace" (guy de maupassant) (i have already read this one..), "by the waters of babylon" (stephen vincent benét), a. v. laider (max beerbohm), "the pillar of fire" (percival wilde), "the strange will" (edmond about), "the hand at the window" (emily brontë) (i have already read this one..), & "national velvet" (enid bagnold) — why are seven of these chapters of novels....? anyway fun fact one of the compilers here also worked on the aforementioned mystery anthology. also anyway Why did i bother to write all that ☹️
fundamental problems of marxism (georgi plekhanov) — book about dialectical/historical materialism which is published here as the first volume of something (marxist library) which is kind of odd to me tbh
one last (thankfully tiny) anthology including le père goriot (honoré de balzac) & eugénie grandet (honoré de balzac)

i was wondering your opinion on moulin rouge!? it's the only baz luhrmann film i love, every other one feels so close to something i'd like but it just never quite gets there. i think it's because the musical-aspect of moulin rouge fits so well with his extravagant directing style that meshes together in a way that it just doesn't for some of his other films.
this was prompted by a rewatch of luhrmann's the great gatsby with dicaprio. there's a wonderful paraphrased quote about gatsby's smile going like "his smile was one of those rare smiles that you may come across 4 or 5 times in life...it faced - or seemed to face - the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor."
that immediately had me saying "that's ewan's smile to a T." obviously i'm shamelessly biased for only one of the two parties here, but i might've enjoyed the movie more if ewan had been gatsby... ewan's just so good at conveying adoration to the point of delusion and maybe i would've found the movie more convincing if i had felt that way about dicaprio's smile and acting lol.
sorry for the unprompted ramble
First of all, I welcome all unprompted rambles. They’re always welcome in my asks.
Second of all, I LOVE how you took the Gatsby smile and attributed it to Ewan because let’s be real, he has the true Gatsby smile. I also find it especially interesting that, in a way, Ewan lost Danny Boyle to Leonardo DiCaprio, but no matter how hard DiCaprio tries, the Gatsby smile is an Ewan smile, not a Leo smile. It kinda came full circle, didn’t it? Let’s just say I appreciate the comparison 😉.
Third of all, Moulin Rouge. That’s where I think I’ll go full on “unpopular opinion”.
A) I’m not into musicals, especially not ones made into movies, and so far I only ever really liked one - The Phantom of the Opera. Despite that, I think Moulin Rouge, if only looked at through the movie-musical lens, is in fact rather good. I’ll be honest here, I think it’s in the second place for me. So, 9/10.
B) I cannot stand “love at first” sight stories. I just cannot, in any way, feel anything for characters who say “I love you” within like a day since meeting each other. No matter how tragic their story might be, I’m just like “ok, so what, you don’t even know her, dude”. And so, I’m really very meh about Satine dying and Christian being all “the world is ending” about it. So, story wise, 3/10.
C) Despite the popular opinion, I think that Ewan and Nicole had very little chemistry in this movie. I know they like each other off screen and that people are into that, but as far as Christian and Satine go, I felt so indifferent it’s w e i r d, cause usually I’m not indifferent to any romantic pairs on screen… So, chemistry wise, 2/10.
D) I actually did not like his singing in this movie, lol. I think it was too clear and that he has sounded way better in, e.g. Velvet Goldmine or even the Hourglass video. Hell, he sounded WAY better in GDT’s Pinocchio. So, singing wise, 5/10 (he still sings well).
I think I’ve seen about 27 Ewan movies so far, and Moulin Rouge is second to last. It used to be in the last place, but then I had the displeasure of watching The Birthday Cake.
P.S. I also am automatically less into any movies where his hair is dyed black, because, come on, he should be on the blond-ginger spectrum.
To sum up, Moulin Rouge was still OK. I think in the general pool of all movies to have ever been created it’s somewhere in the middle. But when it comes to Ewan’s filmography - he can do way better.

Notorious (1946, Alfred Hitchcock)
25/01/2024
Notorious is a 1946 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
In 2001 the American Film Institute placed it 38th on its list of the 100 best thrillers and horror films of all time, and in 2002 it placed 86th on its list of the 100 best romantic films of all time. In 2006 the film was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress.
Miami, Florida.
The next morning the stranger reveals his identity to Alicia: he is the secret agent T. R. Devlin and she contacted her on behalf of the United States Government, to ask her to participate in a mission to Brazil, aimed at unmasking a pro-Nazi plot. Alicia, in love and eager to redeem her family's honor, decides to accept and leaves with him for Rio de Janeiro.
The agent discovers that the cellar is where the uranium ore in wine bottles is hidden.
However, he can no longer bear the torment that the role he has taken on causes him and asks to be transferred to Spain.
David O. Selznick sold the screenplay, actors, and director to RKO for eight hundred thousand dollars and fifty percent of the profits.
David O. Selznick, during the filming of Spellbound, had proposed to Hitchcock a story entitled The Song of the Dragon by John Taintor Foote. A previous film had already been made from the story, Convoy, directed in 1927 by Joseph C. Boyle and Lothar Mendes (the latter uncredited).
Hitchcock was joined on the screenplay by Ben Hecht, who also wrote the screenplay on the previous film Spellbound.
Ingrid Bergman plays the female protagonist; it was a choice strongly desired by Hitchcock himself.
