Super Famicom - Shadowrun
Title: Shadowrun / シャドウラン
Developer: Beam Software PTY. Ltd.
Publisher: Data East
Release date: 25 March 1994
Catalogue Code: SHVC-WR
Genre: RPG
Not the same game as the one I already played on the Sega Mega CD, which is from Compile.
I don’t believe I have ever witnessed a more creative and effective way of introducing a character as a badass than having him escape from his own slab at the morgue. I mean, this tells me that even death couldn’t stop him. That’s the kind of storytelling that makes this lesser-known action RPG worth playing. From what I know, it’s based on a pen-and-paper RPG of the same name, which I know nothing about, and I personally have not played much of. The Super Famicom game developed by the same guys that did the incredible Super Famicom port of Smash T.V. follows an amnesiac shadowrunner by the name of Jake Armitage, as he tries to figure out who wants him dead, and why. The game is really great about giving you little pieces of the puzzle to lead you along. I rarely felt that the main character knew more than me, and that’s unusual for an RPG. The storyline is also very concise, so you’re never doing anything that seems unrelated.
The art style seems to take a cue from Blade Runner (Konami's Snatcher is also another one that does this). The city is gritty, dark, and atmospheric. Despite several hours passing throughout the game, you don’t see a wink of sunlight. That atmosphere is one of the strongest points of the game. There is heavy use of black, everything is very bleak, and the city feels lonely yet lived in. The wonderful and memorable music adds further to the atmosphere. The game certainly does have its own personality. Altogether, the graphics aren’t anything amazing, but the art style more than makes up for it.
Combat is very simple, but it works. I found it to be a welcome alternative to the turn-based battle system that plagues most of that era’s RPGs. Basically, you just point and shoot. You can run around corners or cast spells, but for the most part, you just place your cursor on an enemy and fire at him until he’s dead. It sounds boring, but it does its job without being tedious at all.
There's one flaw though: its lack of polish. You can recruit party members to help you through the game. Unfortunately, the system doesn’t work, it’s more like babysitting. Your ally’s AI has 2 routines; follow you and shoot anything hostile. That leaves you to monitor their HP because they won’t heal themselves or run away. You have to manually select their additional spells, which means you have to drop what you’re doing, scroll over them, select them, pick the spell you want, and who you want it cast on. You also can’t revive downed teammates, so after they get themselves killed, they’re dead forever. Luckily, you can play through the entire game without ever needing a teammate. Otherwise, this would totally ruin the experience.
Some of the smaller items and switches blend into the background. On more than one occasion I found myself wandering aimlessly because I missed something. Once, it was because I couldn’t tell that a gate, I had to go through was open. Something simple could have prevented these things from happening, like making objects you can interact with slightly brighter or having items sparkle or glow. The UI as a whole is quite unwieldy and could have been tightened simply by replacing the cursor with an action button.
I found the game to be quite unstable, as well. On over a dozen occasions, the game locked up on me. A few times, I could no longer interact with anything in the room and couldn’t move. I ended up having to find exactly what would cause the game to stop working, so I could figure out a way around it. I’m willing to concede that maybe it was a flaw in my particular cartridge, but I can’t imagine what. Someday I'll figure out if my cartridge has been assembled wonkily or something.
Shadowrun is a very different game. It's even different from the Sega Genesis and Sega Mega-CD games of the same IP, though you can say both are RPGs in their own right. I can’t really think of another game that’s quite like it. It shares some similarities with RPGs like Fallout, or adventure games like Déjà Vu, and apparently, there’s another, completely unrelated, Shadowrun game on the Genesis (I'll cover that one soon), but this Shadowrun is really something of its own. Its style and personality do a lot to hide its flaws. For those reasons, I’d say it’s entirely worth your while to try this game. Overall, Shadowrun is a GOOD game, and well worth exploring on your Super Famicom.

Emma's Wonderland: Part 3
My Live Reactions to Reading Through My 2017 Novel
Emma stops by Finn's house and immediately assumes that he won't wanna be seen with her (and isn't totally wrong about that, though at least Finn has the decency to be embarrassed by his own embarrassment)
Classic case of kids on bikes (not the RPG, just the trope)
One thing about me, my stories are gonna include a creek
Anyways, Emma brought Finn to this clearing in the woods, where she's built/found/laid claim to a basic lil treehouse, and she calls the place Terabithia Elysium
'Emma sat herself in the center of the field, face tilted skyward. She almost looked like she belonged there, like she was as much a part of Elysium as the creek or the deeply-rooted trees. Finn felt more out of place in that moment than he ever had at school, but it quickly faded as Emma stood from her spot and broke the stillness.' as an awkward person, felt
'[Emma] reached backwards and grabbed a book lying against the trunk of the tree. It wasn't a Bible, but she'd taped a piece of paper to the front and drawn a cross on it, which was good enough for oaths between twelve-year-olds.' pfft
I'm not sure a kid from NYC's favorite place would realistically be Central Park, but Finn's trying to impress a peer, so I'm gonna allow it
It absolutely doesn't work, Emma's like 'i mean, i guess... it sounds busy, though'
"Sometimes, here, there's not even anything to escape," Finn countered after a moment of silence. Emma sighed. "I've got no argument against you there." (this story doesn't have enough 'skibidi' language in it, and i mean that so genuinely. not specifically 'skibidi toilet' or whatever, but middle-school jargon. if I wanted this to be like my middle school years, I should've had Finn begging his mom to borrow her phone to play Temple Run or Angry Birds or hating on Justin Bieber for 'Baby' or smth)
Time jump, Emma and Finn hang out together outside of school but not so much during the school day
'Emma turned on some cartoon about a teen hero and her dweeby best friend who acted as her sidekick.' okay, so that's obviously Kim Possible lmao
'The show on the T.V. continued. There was some goofy, blue villain that kept breaking the fourth wall that wanted to take over the world.' as i said lol
"Whenever things get particularly boring in Fulton, I just pretend that I'm not in Fulton anymore," Emma said plainly, as though she were done with her explanation. Finn tilted his head, waiting for her to continue. She did. "Instead, I like to think that I'm living in this beautiful little town called Aurelia." "Aurelia?" (so i thought it was a cute little name for a town, then i joined the music department at my school, where I'd go onto to take an aural skills class that utilized the notorious program 'Auralia', and now I cannot read that word with anything other than dread)
I had pretty lofty goals revolving around writing out fantastical segments centered around Aurelia in this story, which I don't think I ever really got around to writing unfortunately, but that was where we were going to slowly watch Emma's arc play out, so I'm curious to see how I worked around it here
Emma's dad's home!
'Mr. Garland spoke in a slow voice, not in a condescending way, not even in a calming way. He simply sounded thoroughly fatigued, which Finn supposed came with returning from a full day of work.' mood
AHA! First case of an adult being named after someone I knew
Mr. Garland shares a first name with MY BROTHER
That's wild lol
This man is depressed as shit too lmao what a way to honor my older brother
'Up close, Finn could see bags under Mr. Garland's eyes. There was exhaustion written into every line on his face. And more startling were his eyes. They were hazel, like Emma's, but this was the only thing they had in common. While Emma's joy seemed to spark a constant life behind her eyes, Mr. Garland's were dark and sad. This house didn't match Emma, Finn thought, but Mr. Garland fit in it perfectly.' (oof)
!!! So i DID write something set in Aurelia
It's about Emma's dad
'His life held everything in it that he needed, but he was a sad prince. They say there was no root to his grief, but, for that, he felt it all the stronger.' clinical depression, got it
'In a gentle voice, the young woman told him of her own sorrow, and brought him to the elderly magic man who had helped her.' her mom was also clinically depressed and referred her dad to a therapist, noted
'But only months after the birth of their daughter, the young woman was killed in a tragic accident.' Emma's mom got irl fridged, rip
'So that was why Emma's mother was never around. Finn didn't want to' i literally ended the sentence there and moved on immediately to dialogue lol whoops!
Ending Thoughts:
I should've written more than this, considering there was actually quite a lot going on, but I'm sleepy! I just got off work! Leave me alone! So Finn and Emma hang out now, though never publicly (somehow, keeping a friendship quiet feels even worse than keeping a relationship private, but both of them seem to prefer keeping their distance around their classmates). I certainly have Thoughts about how the progression of their friendship works, but I'll keep it to myself for now because I haven't seen how long things will take to move forwards. Other than that, I think we're at the tail end of the 'mediocre midsection' i've been talking about since like 2013. The writing is much more stable and much more in-line with what I write nowadays, but there's definitely enough repetition in sentence structure and things that I think it's earned its spot.

Cultivation Analysis- Disco Elysium
I was not someone who considered themselves a “gamer” as a child. I asked for a Nintendo DS, because I wanted to play Nintendogs. We got a Wii for my sister's birthday, and together we loved to play Mario Galaxy (1 and 2). After getting the Nintendo DSi, I fell out of video games for a while, until I met a very special person. My husband and I met in our senior year of high school, and the first time we met he was wearing a Portal 2 t-shirt. He had grown up playing games, and has an extensive knowledge of their history, development, and mechanics. One day, I went over to his house and he was playing a new game he thought I would like based on The Walking Dead franchise. Telltale Game’s The Walking Dead, a game where your choices impact the story and characters. The game was released in “Episodes” and the last had just been released. We had been together for just over a month, and he was not planning on finishing the ending when I got there. However, I was curious after watching him finish the 4th episode. He did not want to stop either, so I watched the ending. That was the first time I was emotionally destroyed by a video game.
Fast forward ten years. My husband and I play games almost daily. I generally watch more than I play, (marrying my own personal Let’s Player has its perks). However, I enjoy playing more story driven games on my own. Usually at the recommendation of my husband. I play a few action games, usually with friends, but Role Playing Games (RPGs) are my game style of choice. RPGs vary in tone, style, and mechanics, but the heart of a good RPG is an interesting and compelling story with dynamic characters whose lives are impacted by my choices as the player. One of the best games I’ve played (and re-played) in recent years is Disco Elysium.
In this game, you play as Harry DuBois, a strug-out police detective in the seaside town of Ravachol. You start the game, not even knowing your own name, as different parts of your psyche comment on "your" choices and the environment. Playing video games is different from consuming other forms of media, in that it expects the media consumer, the player, to be actively involved in the process. It is not like a movie or T.V. Show that you can sit idly and watch. “With the development of increasingly complex musical scores and the advent of machinima, the boundaries between video games and other forms of media are slowly blurring…video games have contributed significantly to modern artistic culture.” (Media Studies 101, 2014, 10.4). Players have to invest in the process in order to continue the complex story and uncover the mysteries of the murder, the town, the people who live there, Harry’s past, and even mythical creatures. The nature of the game makes it so that you can re-play it and experience completely different moments based on different choices.
My favorite moment doesn’t happen until the very end of the game. In the town, there are rumors of a mythical creature, the Insulindian Phasmid. I don’t want to spoil the moment for people who have yet to play this wonderful game (seriously, play it if you can), but it is hands down, one of the most beautiful moments I have ever experienced from any form of media. I remember turning to my husband, who was watching me play for once, and seeing the wonder on his face as well. Even though it was his third time experiencing that moment (yes we really like this game). He even bought some art inspired by that moment for me for Christmas, from artist Luís Melo. I can see it from where I type this post.
Disco Elysium has impacted me and many other players. The art, writing, acting, complex choices, music, and animation all come together in a truly beautiful experience. Games like this, make video games an art and go against every “games ruin your mind” naysayer on the planet. Revochol is not a real place, Harry, Kim and the Phasmid are not real beings, but the impact they have left on the players can not be understated. ZA/UM, the developer and publisher, seems to be in limbo, and I doubt a game of this caliber will be released again for a long time. I hope that more people are inspired to create games to make the players think and challenge the medium in new, creative ways.
Thank you for reading, see you next thought.

Campaign Sorcery - Out-of-Game Outings
uHullo, Gentle Readers. We're back this month with another Campaign Sorcery article, where we give little ideas on how to make a campaign more memorable. This time, we're leaving the game table and heading out for a bit of fun.
Back after I graduated college, I ran a game of Werewolf: The Apocalypse with a bunch of close friends. The problem was, we rarely got a chance to hang out outside of game time, so, when we got there, there was often a period of 30+ minutes when we'd catch up with each other socially before jumping into game. When we had players showing up late, that meant we often wouldn't get going until an hour or more after the first folks arrived.
Since we could all hang out afterwards, we made a new tradition. We would wait until after the game to do the majority of our socializing. We would go to Bickford's, a local late night place where you could get breakfast all day, and we'd laugh about things that happened in game or chatted about real life stuff over plates of bacon and pancakes. It was also super helpful for when a funny story came to someone's mind during the game, threatening to pop out and ruin the grim atmosphere. When someone would start to segue off into something off-topic, the players would say, "Save it for Bickford's!" And the player would jot it down as something to talk about later.
While I'm not suggesting that you create a new tradition for your games (though feel free to do so), there's nothing that stops you and your gamers from putting together some awesome out-of-game excursions to build the chemistry and camaraderie within the group. It can be great to get everyone in the group out from around the table and off into the wide world for some fun together.
If a movie or T.V. show that seems of group interest comes out, have the group together to see it. There's a slate of new Star Wars movies coming out in the next few years, as well as many new shows on Disney+. If you're running a Star Wars RPG, how cool would it be to all enjoy the new Star Wars product together. Or if you're running D&D, and a swords & sorcery movie comes out, get together to see it.
Look into local museums to see if anything of interest might be coming, or if they have a permanent exhibit that would relevant to your group's interests. Back in the day, Worcester MA used to house the Higgins Armory, a collection of medieval weapons and armor. Fairly close-by, there's a restaurant called the Castle, which has a whole medieval-look to it as well. I took my D&D group to both places as an outing, and we had a great time. People took photos of weapons and armor that they thought their characters might use, and it added a little something to the game. I'm also blessed to live close to Hammond Castle, an area that would be a fantastic outing for a D&D group. And any D&D group could have a great time going to a Renaissance Faire together; you'd better believe mine did!
You don't have to do anything elaborate on an outing. I used to go hiking in a local woods with mine when I was a teen, and, sometimes, we'd take what we thought of as D&D Rations with us and have a picnic, trying to imagine what it would be like to be adventurers, exploring a trackless wood (even if the woods we were in had very clear tracks.)
You might consider going to a board game cafe and playing a non-RPG with your group, just to have a chance to socialize and enjoy each other's company outside of the confines of a normal game. You might check out local museums of interest. Even places that you might not traditionally think of as of interest to you may surprise you. We have the Norman Rockwell Museum in western MA. It's a great museum on its own, but they also regularly have art exhibits that, as a lover of fantasy in general and D&D in particular, have been of interest. They just ended an exhibit specifically about fantasy art, which included several pieces borrowed from Wizards of the Coast's archives, as well as a few pieces from the collection of a certain Tony DiTerlizzi, who happens to be a local.
I hope this has made you think about the possibility of going out with your gaming group for some social and extracurricular activities. Next time, we'll have a chat about a possible gift for your gamers...right in time for the holidays! Until then, may all your 20s be natural.

I was sent by @girl-next-door-writes 😊😊
May I offer this for your gif drabble?
Hi!! Thanks so much Bee! (I’m taking initiative and giving you a nickname already. I hope that’s not too forward lol)
You shot the amber beams from your fists and watched as the hydra soldier you’d aimed at went flying across the street.
You were outnumbered 37 to 1 and even though you had plenty of fight left, you weren’t sure you could handle all of them alone.
Suddenly red and blue flashed in front of you, shielding you from a spray of bullets an enemy had meant for you.
The man in the suit smiled at you, “Nice fists. You got any more of that?”
Captain America. You’d only seen him on T.V.
You nodded, “Plenty more.”
He smiled. “My name’s Steve.” He held out a hand.
You took it. “Y/N. Nice to meet you.”
Something caught your eye and you reactively shot a blast to your left, taking out a soldier with an RPG.
“Nice!” Steve smirked.
In a flash he turned full circle and threw his shield at another enemy. It bounced off and came right back to Steve who caught it effortlessly.
“Say, you wanna grab a coffee sometime or maybe dinner?”
Your eyes widened a little. Was he really flirting with you mid-battle?
“Rogers!” You could hear the angry voice in his earpiece clear as day. “Maybe when you’re done proposing you could help out over here!? I’ve got three tanks and a guy with an eye patch and I could use some back up!”
He touched his ear piece. “On my way, Buck.”
You ticked your head to the side. “Need some help or are you actually planning to propose?”
He smiled and nodded his head and he began to walk backwards towards the fight.
“Yeah, come on,” he jerked his head in the direction he was heading, encouraging you to join. “Coffee, dinner, taking down a hydra cell, it’s all the same, right?”
You chuckled and rose from the ground. “Race ya.” You shot forwards and left him in the dust.
“Oh yeah, I’m gonna propose alright.”

May Death do Us Part (Benrey/Gordon Freeman)
A/N: ahaha im a bit nervous to post this one ngl but fuck it might as well give it a shot. if you haven’t seen hlvrai please do it’s so good and so fucking funny. Thank you @kryogie for helping me with this fic! I really appreciate it bro.
Warnings:angst,suicidal thoughts,suicide attempt,hurt/comfort,dissociation.
Benrey couldn’t die. Anyone else would be ecstatic to know that they could out run the hounds of death. Gordon’s apartment was dark that night. He’d mention earlier that morning picking up another shift, so he’d be home later. The silence was deafening as Benrey stared at the bright T.V. screen. His thoughts felt like he was dragging through quick sand and his brain lagged. “not pog. cringeworthy moments right here,” Benrey murmured to himself as a CPU beat his ass on Smash. Sonic, the one Benrey mains, looked glum as he clapped for Bowser. It was suffocating; the silence and the distant but also bright colours of the T.V. The switch hummed faintly but Benrey had trouble focusing on it.
He hated the quiet. Whenever it was quiet the guilt came rushing back. The memories of Black Mesa were fuzzy but Benrey couldn’t forget what he had done. His hand laid there on the cold cement ground as Gordon cried out in pain in the dark. His form being dragged by three soldiers as they left him to die. Benrey could faintly see the blood as Tommy started to cry.
“N-no! What are they d-doing to Mr. Freeman?”
Benrey choked on his breath; his chest felt tight and his throat contracted harshly. The whispers of the dark swirled around him and laid on his trembling form thickly. The T.V. that sat on its stand became blurry and Benrey felt as if he were sinking.
He couldn’t move. The soldiers around them paid him no mind. They laughed and carried on like nothing had happened. After all, Benrey’s job was done righ? This is what he had wanted?
“calm down,” Benrey told himself. “this..this is baby behaviour...we’re supposed to be..epic gamer....” Gordon had moved on from Black Mesa. Or so he told himself anyway. His arm was back, something Tommy’s dad had fixed. Even with his hand being back, Benrey could see the underlying anxiety Gordon had. He could see it in the way Gordon fidgeted and jumped at every loud noise. He couldn’t blame him at all. This was all his fault. He had always enjoyed making Gordon irritated. It was funny and entertaining but he had taken it too far.
Benrey knew he didn’t deserve Gordon’s kindness. He didn’t have to let Benrey in his apartment as the rain poured that night. Gordon was anxious and still held some malice towards him, but Benrey could see his big brown eyes soften with concern as he saw the blood seeping through his security shirt. Gordon was insistent on tending his wounds even though he knew Benrey couldn’t die. Something Benrey still couldn’t wrap his head around to this day.
How long had it been? Hours? Minutes? Benrey couldn’t tell but the thoughts were getting louder and louder as he sat there on the couch. He had to do something. His limbs didn’t feel like moving but he wiggled them as a test. They felt sluggish and heavy but Benrey eventually got a leg off the couch. He deserved this didn’t he? He deserved the pain and despair of the aftermath. It’s what he caused after all. So why was it so hard to move on?
“wasn’t suppos’ to be..like this,” Benrey mumbled one night as the both of them sat in front of the T.V. Some stupid rom com played. Pretty and Pink, was it? Gordon didn’t say anything but his brows furrowed. “What?” Benrey huffed. “can’t hear me feetman?..gordon freeman??more like.. gordon deafman haha...can’t even hear his bro talking to him..” Gordon rolled his eyes and sighed. “Can you ever talk seriously?” “yea...I tried but deafman couldn’t hear me....” Gordon just snorted, picking up the bowl of popcorn from the coffee table. “Whatever man just watch the movie.” Benrey could see a small smile on Gordon’s plush lips. It made his heart flutter.
The balcony felt cold underneath Benrey’s feet. Gordon’s apartment was high enough that he’d smack on the concrete and die from the impact. Sure, he’d resurrect again, but it helped with the pain. All the emotions swirled around him and bit at his gut. It was an endless torture of not being able to be at peace. People saw the ability of never being able to die a blessing. Hell, they would kill for it. Benrey saw it as a curse. It was perfect for him and the thought made him laugh hollowly. It was raining again and the air nipped at his toes and fingers. The wind made his skin numb from the cold. He laughed at the clicheness of it all. Like some damn cheesy RPG game where the main character hit his low. The sky wept with Benrey’s misery.
Benrey’s fists clenched tightly on the balcony. The metal railing was cold to the touch and the water made it a bit slippery. The laughter wheezed out of his chest. Was he crying? His tears felt hot;His arms felt slackish and unbearably slow.”c-could end everything r-right now....little feetman wouldn’t have to...p-put up with me anymore...i’ll just respawn like a gamer and...keep d-doing it....” Maybe one day he’d disappear. Maybe he’d actually stay dead. Benrey cackled at the thought. It was wishful thinking, he knew it. Yet, he couldn’t help but think of the science team. What if he actually stayed dead? Tommy would cry and wail like a good friend. He cared about Benrey even after all the shit he put them through. Dr. Coomer might be a little sad but would be back in no time. Bubby..well Bubby was and always will be a wild card. Benrey’s heart lurched when he thought about Gordon. The science team never worried too much when Benrey died but this was different entirely. Benrey wanted to die. Would they even care? Gray orbs left his mouth as he remincised over what he had done. He had fucked up and couldn’t forgive himself. How could he when he had hurt the man he liked.
Gripping the railing for support, Benrey balanced himself onto it. Carefully, he stood up on it. His stomach lurched with anxiety as he looked down. Cars honked and people walked among the sidewalks blissfully unaware. Benrey couldn’t help but think about if his head smacked onto the pavement. How traumatized innocent bystanders would be and if they would tried to help. Was it wrong that he couldn’t find himself to care?
“Benrey!” He jumped in surprise, causing him to teeter on the railing. His arms waved and so did his fingers for balance. A hand grabbed him by the back of his shirt and yanked him onto the balcony floor. Benrey let out a hiss as his back made contact with its cement floor. He cursed once he realized who prevented him from jumping off the balcony and ending his misery for a short awhile. “W-what the fuck man?!” Gordon Freeman hovered over Benrey. His glasses were speckled from the rain and his hair that was pulled up was starting to get damp. His brown eyes were wide and..was he crying? The waves of guilt that were already washing Benrey away were now crashing to the surface. This wasn’t supposed to happen.
He looked so afraid and hurt. Benrey averted his gaze. “L-let’s get you inside,” Gordon said, mostly to himself. He was trying to reassure himself, Benrey noticed, as he helped him up. Gordon’s hand wrapped tightly around his as he lead him back into his apartment. God, Benrey felt so damn guilty. He just wanted to die for a bit and be nothing. It only lasted for a couple hours before he came back but the seemingly never ending darkness called to him. It called for him to come home. Benrey could barely register a fluffly towel being wrapped around his quivering frame. His clothing clung to his skin in a gross way and he felt cold and warm at the same time. There were groceries and a pack of Moutain Dew on the kitchen isalnd. Benrey’s favorite.
Gordon ran a hand through his hair. A nervous tick he had which didn’t help Benrey’s guilt at all. “’m...s-sorry,” Benrey choked out. “weren’t suppose...to see that.” Gordon’s head shot up. His brown eyes wavered as he looked into Benrey’s seemingly cold black ones. “No man don’t a-apologize. I-If I had known...” Gordon trailed off. Benrey shook his head. “n-not just for that feetman...for everything..” His lip quivered and he dropped Gordon’s gaze. Finally, he had said what he’d been keeping in for so long. “Is that why you tried t-to..do that?” Gordon gestured to the balcony. Benrey nodded. Gordon let out a shaky sigh. “L-look man.. I’ve already forgiven you. I care about you and...I worry about you Benrey..I l-lo-” Benrey’s eyes widened. Gordon’s cheeks heated up and he swallowed thickly. “..wha?..” “U-um,” Gordon stuttered, eyes averting anything close to Benrey. “U-uh..fuck it man! I like you alright? I-I.. love you after all these months! I was gonna tell you but... I-I didn’t think you’d feel the same.. Now of all times isn’t g-good to tell you either.” Benrey stood there stunned.
Gordon swallowed nervously as he waited silently. Benrey’s silence and his stare didn’t help Gordon in the slightest. “L-look man if you don’t feel that way it’s fine. I’m more concerned about you though...I-I have a friend who’s a therapist! S-she’s great and she-” Gordon got caught off by soft lips against his own. His eyes widened but when Benrey clutched tightly into his shirt, he kissed back.
Gordon cracked a smile once they pulled away. “I-I don’t wanna pressure you into anything while in this state...so I-I understand if you don’t wanna g-get into anything-” Benrey cut Gordon off with another kiss. They were a bit cold and damp from standing in the rain. “y-you’re my gamer boyfriend now feetman..” Gordon barked a laugh as he pulled away. “I still want you to get help though okay? I want to help you through this.” Benrey nodded, “i-i’ll try bro....i’ll try.” Satisfied, Gordon beckoned to the couch. “Wanna play some video games or something?” Benrey nodded, already shuffling to the couch.
After Gordon put the groceries away and grabbed Benrey a can of Moutain Dew and his so called “gamer snacks”, he joined him on the couch. “Can I,” Gordon asked, hovering his arm over Benrey’s shoulders. He nodded and as soon as Gordon wrapped his arm around him, Benrey nestled into his side. They both smiled as they basked in each other’s presence and played Heavenly Sword. Tomorrow will be a better day.

Her Dark Sins by T.R. Tells
The synopsis for this book is: What happens when an ominous phenomenon forces people’s negativity to manifest into demonic creatures called Umbra Shades that spread Apathy Syndrome to its victims? In a violent and corrupted world ruled by negative intentions, a seventeen-year-old girl with the ability to purge these demons wants nothing more than a better tomorrow… But will she be able to protect her loved ones and save humanity with it? Generally, expect something between The Hate You Give and This Savage Song. It's a fast-paced, action-packed and EXTRA dramatic book about a teenager who found herself capable of seeing (and fighting) apathy growing in others. Seriously, there is SO MUCH DRAMA. It's a cute independent book written by someone with so many cool ideas for a book. My only issue was with the pace - too many ideas were squeezed into too few chapters. I would be happier to see more scenes showing the character's motivations and personalities before jumping straight into the action sequences and manga-discussing. This one book easily contains enough material for a whole series. Anyway, I think T.R. Tells has awesome ideas and is a very talented author and I look forward to reading more of her works in the future.

Matrix Pill 2020
The Matrix has you…
The cultural overview over "The Matrix Trilogy" and how it foresaw the social trends.

"The Matrix" trilogy by the Wachowski brothers is the most iconic and groundbreaking movie trilogies in cinema history. Terms like "The red pill", "Dessert of the real", "There is no spoon", "Follow the white rabbit", "Why, Mr. Anderson? Why?" and many other phrases from the film became the golden quotes of the new millennium, shaping the entire culture of the "generation Y"… also known as "the millennials". "The bullet time" effect with fancy acrobatic moves and bullet waves turned into the most quoted gimmick for decades in action films, parodies and video games. The slow motion has never been so cool and slick, as it was after "The Matrix", not to mention sunglasses at night and dark looks with fashionable black leather tailored coats.
Its been 21 years since the theatrical release of the first "The Matrix" film. It came out in November of 1999 (the most revolutionary year in cinema history, since it is the release year of such groundbreaking hit titles like "Star Wars: Episode I. The Phantom Menace" by George Lucas, "Fight Club" by David Fincher, and "The Matrix", of course, by the Wachowski brothers). Four years after the great success of the film, "The Matrix" was reloaded with two worthy sequels: "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" — turning a movie franchise into a full-time trilogy. There was also "The Animatrix" — an anthology of animated short films set in "The Matrix Universe" directed by highly acclaimed Japanese animators, and a video-game "Enter the Matrix" which told a story that went parallel to the story of sequels, explaining some of the unanswered questions in the films. Thus "The Matrix" franchise has become one of the first inter-media franchises where all available storytelling formats told one epic story from different angles and points of view. And unlike other attempts of creating such inter-media franchise around movies (like it was with "Star Wars Expended Universe" or "The Terminator" franchise) it wasn't just pure merchandising and cash-grabbing schemes with questionable product quality having a famous brand logo on it… no, '"The Matrix" franchise was one well thought out project and story from the very beginning, created and curated by the Wachowski brothers. Nothing more or less.
In the year of 2020 "The Matrix" is being reloaded once again with its new instalment being in production. Internet is filled with shaky mobile phone behind the scenes footage of "The Matrix 4". We see Neo, played by actor Keanu Reeves and his stunt double, jumping of high buildings and riding fancy motorcycle with Trinity, played by Carrie Ann-Moss, while the streets of San-Francisco are being turned into a chaotic war zone with explosions, car chases, extras running all over the streets and helicopters flying.
Usually such big blockbuster film productions are being held in secret in order to prevent unnecessary leaks and story spoilers… most of the extras and crew members don't even know what movie they are filming up until the very end. During such big productions fake movie titles are made. But this time, as it seams, filmmakers don't really care about production secrecy, as actor Keanu Reeves and film director Lana Wachowski keep on hanging out with random people on a street during the filmmaking process. What is it? A new viral social media format of film advertising? Or the new way of entire filmmaking approach? Or maybe both?
Either way — Lana Wachowski is the visionary artist that is going to bring something fresh and unexpected into the cinema format and into the new "Generation Z" culture. The Wachowski brothers have foreseen the future with "The Matrix" film almost in every way possible… and I'm pretty sure they are going to do so again. They spoke of cyber-crimes, data privacy and internet control long before Edward Snowden incident, WikiLeaks, Anonymous group, social medias and etc. They showed aircraft controlled by so called "terrorists" hitting skyscrapers years before 9/11. "The Matrix" also tried to warn us about the dangers of virtual realities, and here we are 20 years later using VR systems and spending our lives in endless MMO RPG games (by the way, "The Matrix" franchise even had its own MMO RPG video game "The Matrix Online"). The virtual values have become much more valuable that the material ones. Bitcoins and Facebook likes are considered to be much more precious then real money and even gold by many. Instagram pages are viewed as the only true portraits of their users, however bright filters, happy faces, flattering camera lenses and photoshop have nothing to do with reality. It is merely a "Residual self-image", as it was named in the film, "A mental projection of your digital self". The person sees himself whom he wants him to be, not whom he really is.
And I think that this topic is the most overlooked topic by critics and contemporary culture scholars.
Just think about it — the Wachowski brothers are the physical manifestation of their own concept of "Residual self-image", as both of them saw themselves as someone different. Both brothers were men, but they considered themselves to be women. Their physical reality didn't match with their mental projection of virtual self. Thus they had to do surgeries and go through sex change procedures. The Wachowski brothers are officially sisters. Nowadays in 2020 it is a common practice that can't surprise anyone, however in 1990s during the production of the first "The Matrix" film it was a big deal so big that Wachowski brothers had to rewrite the screenplay. In the earlier drafts of the script there was a fully flashed out transgender character. She is still present in the final film, but her role and concept has been reduced. Character Switch — portrayed by Belinda McClory — was a transgender, and her name "Switch" meant too illustrate her constant transitions from one form into another, as she was a female in the real world, but in the Matrix her personal "Residual self-image" switched her into a masculine male. For Wachowski brothers it was a very important topic to explore, since both of them dedicated their lives to transgender worldview, but in 1990's the film studio and producers thought that such concepts would be too confusing for average film viewers and difficult to follow, thus it was all cut out during pre-production. Even their first film "Bound" that featured lesbian love story was met with numerous misunderstandings during pre-production, during its filming and, of course, during its release, since such themes were considered too risky… almost taboo, as they could easily put off many unprepared audiences.
But now… look how the world and culture has changed?! In 21 years everything is upside down. It is almost impossible to find a big blockbuster film or franchise or T.V. series or even a video-game that has no lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, pansexual or any other "something"-sexual character. It is true for both "rated R" and "rated M" media and for media oriented for children. Disney's life adaptation of animated classic "Beauty and the Beast" is the prime example… not to mention more.
I must say that unorthodox sexual orientation of characters were always present in cinema, they were never the subject of prohibition and never will be, however before "Wachowski era" their orientation always played some sort of narrative purpose. No character was supposed to be gay or transexual just for that sake of being such. But nowadays we see LGBT characters all over visual media… and the fact of their orientation rarely enhance the story or add anything to it. For the most part it is just being there for no reason other then being there. No wonder we have so many poorly written stories today. "Chekhov's gun" is the key to good storytelling, isn't it? If you put something into a story, it must heave a purpose, because without purpose it's just a filler, a white noise… this means it shouldn't be there at all. And here I'd like to quote Agent Smith from "The Matrix" films:
"But, as you well know, appearances can be deceiving…" — even here Wachowski brothers point out the previous "Residual self-image" topic. "…which brings me back to the reason why we're here. We're not here because we're free. We're here because we're not free. There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist."
Curious… Wachowski brothers were pioneers in LGBT mass-media, yet even they were smart enough to exclude these themes from "The Matrix trilogy", even having a total creative freedom over the sequels, as they knew that it would serve no purpose in their story. Yet they used much more sophisticated tricks to pinpoint their agenda and worldview. Get ready for some hard drugs! Wachowski brothers urged the protagonist and film viewers to take "The red pill" and "Free our minds". They also urged us to fight against all rules and stereotypes, and young generation loved it. In the film it simply meant "rage against the machines", but in our world where this film was "The red pill" for young people, this fight against the established order had much deeper purpose.
Upon the quick view on the lives of the Wachowski brothers over these two decades we can tell that their "red pill" they were giving us, was simply a androgyne hormone for transgenders and their main "Matrix" they were fighting against, was the sexual orientation stereotypes. They succeeded in their revolution, as LGBT themes are no longer taboo in mass-media. But there were also other important cultural topics Wachowski brothers presented with their trilogy: multiculturalism, racial diversity, feminism and even "toxic masculinity" and war against white men and patriarchy… long before these themes became mainstream in pop-culture.
"The Matrix" franchise had always a diverse cast, didn't it? It also has strong and independent female characters right from the start. And it wasn't just a copycat trend to appeal some social minorities, as it happens today. It was the personal philosophy of the authors. However, despite all their diversity and equality, one social group was shown deliberately one-sided. Just think about it. All evil characters in all three films were male and white. Agents are white middle aged men, Cypher — white middle aged man, Merovingian — white middle aged man, Architect — white man, Bane — white middle aged man, etc. Some can argue on this topic, since white men where also on the side of good guys. True, "but, as you well know, appearances can be deceiving…" says Smith. All white men on the good side of the story are… well, questionable. Whom can we name? Councillor Hamann — played by Anthony Zerbe — is a white man… a father figure in Zion, however he is shown to be an irrational and rhetorical weak old man. Comparing him to other leaders of Zion we can easily see his incompetence. Even Neo makes fun of him, pointing out on a fact that Hamann's solid age doesn't make him wiser (and it is the only time in the whole trilogy when the main protagonist ever trolls anyone). Then there is the Kid — played by Clayton Watson — another white man good guy, but he is just an immature naive boy… in "The Animatrix" he in the moment of danger finds no better way out then a suicide… a very questionable role model, don't you think? Who's next? Mouse — portrayed by Matt Doran — once again a young teenager full of sexual hormones and nothing more. There is also Captain Roland — played by David Roberts — and his ship crew, but a single black woman Niobe — played by Jada Pinkett Smith — turns out to be wiser and much more competent then any of them. Meanwhile all non-white and non-male characters are shown in the positive light. Wait… but what about Neo — the one himself — played by Keanu Reeves — he is a white man — the hero of the trilogy. True. However originally "The Matrix" creators wanted to cast Will Smith for the role of Neo, but Will Smith declined the role and chose to act in "Wild Wild West".
In other words Wachowski brothers brought up anti-white men SJW themes in their films long before such topics became mainstream and part of pop-culture. Thus they weren't even noticed by the time of film release. But it is worth mentioning that Wachowski brothers were depicting anti-white men subplots not because they were following some kind of fashion or social agenda like mass-media does today, but because brothers WERE white and men, and they wanted to do something about it. And they did. For real.
However next generation of filmmakers and artists took the Wachowski brothers' personal issues and turned it into a viral trend, changing the culture forever. It can be even said that the modern SJW and LGBT hysteria is the Matrix, created by Wachowski brothers. I wonder, will their new "The Matrix" film change the world once again?.. and how?

Some Teen Titan Headcanons:
Raven:
The first time she had a loose tooth, she worried it with her tongue until it fell loose, and crunched it without thinking; as a half-demon it turns out she sheds a lot of teeth, and she nonchalantly eats/swallows most of them.
She is incredibly smart, and incredibly bored. Always. She will teach herself new things, show them off just to get a reaction out of her friends, then never touch that thing again if pressed to use it for any reason. It drives Robin bonkers, as he’s had to replan missions around that. Such skills usually pertain to her love of languages, such as types of dances and knitting.
As a half-demon, Raven’s body is really good at digesting meat, but not so good at digesting most types of breads and plants; she loves sweet things, and prefers hard candies such as rock candy, over chocolates. She refuses to ‘give into her demonic nature’ however, and readily eats things like pizza and sandwiches, despite them not really sitting well with her.
As a half-demon, she is actually stronger than most humans, but, as her magic is usually more effective & her pacifist upbringing still influences her, she tends to opt out of physical situations where she can.
Sometimes she’ll stare at a spot on a wall or near the ceiling, and ‘track’ movement from that spot much like a cat; when questioned about it, her focus will shift blanky to whoever is talking to her and you can visibly see her blink back into ‘normalcy’. Her answer is always a shrug. It’s concerning.
She has a form of shapeshifting that’s caused by her power changing her body to better house the energies contained within; it was a conscious decision to change her childhood appearance to look more human. In her childhood she had several sets of red eyes and redder skin that terrified everyone around her, causing a deep-seated self-loathing and anxiety.
She sometimes wears heelys and shoes that light up under her cloak.
When she moves objects, she puts a little of her soul into the object to manipulate, same for people; she can trace the ‘imprint’ or ‘impression’ of that action, and is really good at navigating the places she’s been for having used her powers to become parts of the surroundings.
She can also ‘hone in” on people she’s used her powers on more quickly the those she hasn’t. She can still find those she’s never interacted with before, by following the emotional trail given off by the people who do know them.
Places with stronger emotional residue call to her, and it’s not uncommon for her to shudder while walking with her friends, as a wave of the past washes over her.
She has a unique brand of humor; she’ll mix memes from Earth and Azarath, and use what sporadic knowledge she has of each to get her friend’s goats. She’s especially fond of giving Robin (Grayson) near incomprehensible riddles that usually end in the punchline, ‘and doves’.
Doves were the only animal she’d seen on Azarath, as they were the holy symbols of Azar. It was essentially illegal to take Azar or the bird’s names in vain. Raven had a complicated set of not-quite-feelings about them, as she did with the rest of Azarath’s purity based culture.
The first time she saw a flock of pigeons, Raven stopped and stared at them, confusing her friends. After staring for a few moments, she whispered, “Stupid doves” just to test fate if she’d be smited for it, and Beast Boy spent the rest of the afternoon explaining the differences between all the birds that he knew. She never stopped calling pigeons ‘stupid doves’ much to her friends confusion.
Horror movies scare her because they push into her face what she thinks other people may come to see her as, and what she may become if she doesn’t remain vigilant. Also, because there wasn’t t.v. or movies on Azarath and a complete lack of anything resembling a fantasy genre, so most forms of entertaining media were completely new to her, and she has little desensitization towards them.
Her music is a massive unseparated playlist of all her music, plus the playlists of all her friends, so most of her friends become terribly surprised they listen to anything with her when a track switches from something like a guided meditation narration to a deathmetal polka ballad.
Raven is an amature musisian. She messes around with writing wordless songs and playing them on keyboard; she has a small dedicated following on the internet, though nobody knows who she is since she never uses any bios or discernable names. She sometimes works on the music at the open mic night cafes she goes to, if the place is rather empty.
She continues to mentor the Tot Titans Melvin the Magnificent, Timmy Tantrum, and Teether, and gradually adopts them as her own. Or rather, when they start calling her “mom”, she accepts the role, feeling both flattered and frantic over doing a good enough job of being a loving guiding force that she never grew up with until her friends came along.
As a half-demon, her body is never happy with the temperature around her. Her skin gets overheated easily, but internally, she always feels freezing. This leads to her wearing outfits like her infamous leotard without pants while also sporting her iconic heavy cloak.
She doesn’t sleep. She’s afraid to let her control slip for that long. Instead, she spends the time meditating; the calming rest-like trance allowing her body and mind to decompress while she maintains control. Or that was the theory she was raised by, at least. She also mediates for several hours during the day, as a go-to thing to do. It’s both her coping mechanism and bad habit.
When she does sleep, she has terrible nightmares and visions, as well as a few instances of sleep paralysis. She’s also never certain if her father or her own demonic nature is the cause of such things.
At sleepovers, she’s content to cuddle when everyone is sleeping, as she enjoys feeling the happy emotions of her friends as they dream. She’ll rest her eyes and do light mediation until someone inevitably starts up a 3am conversation with her, or drift into deep meditation until someone prods her to come to breakfast, if she’s trying to block out everyone’s emotions if they’re too strong for her to comfortably deal with.
She can hear the whispers of the unseen, and hear the screams of the damned frequently. She forgets that isn't normal sometimes, but never speaks of it, and goes quiet if someone catches her mumbling to herself about it.
There wasn’t any sort of mental health resources on Azarath; everything was her demons. Since coming to Earth, she’s made a couple of crude google searches of mental health topics, but never really dug into it. She is convinced that most things she deals with, are a direct result of her demonic heritage, and doesn’t normally share such things unless they’re directly impact the lives of her friends in a dangerous way.
She steals her friends’ clothes. Robins jackets. Cyborg’s hoodies. Starfire’s shorts. Beast Boy’s shirts. Anything Jinx doesn’t nail to her closet. Raven wears them until they don’t ‘feel’ like her friends anymore, and then she returns them by abandoning them in the laundry room. If her friends start wearing them again, they run the risk of her stealing them again, if they were terribly comfy. She likes them for the emotional imprints of her friends, much the same way an animal like the smell of their favorite person’s sweater.
She will binge-read wikipedia, putting every link in a new tab. she has hundreds of tabs open at any given time. She never gets to what she wants to read because she stops to read each new page linked in the article ad nauseum.
Raven often gets overwhelmed at grocery stores; not only are there usually a lot of people in bad moods with kids throwing tantrums, which grate against her empathy powers, the repeating arrays of small colorful items on every shelf actually make her slightly nauseous and disoriented rather easily. When shopping with her friends, shell tend to stay near the cart pusher, and focus on blocking everything out, leaving her distant, snippy, and dismissive.
She sometimes humors Beast Boy by guesting on his gamer channel. She’s incredibly sarcastic, but is genuinely curious to see what happens when he messes with the game in ways that he shouldn’t, and lowkey urges him to break them from the inside out. One time, she actually took over for Beast Boy and played the game for herself; the playtime lasting for around five hours. That game was Sims City. She constructed a nearly perfect recreation of Azarath, (though no one knew it as such) and then wordlessly deleted it without warning. Fans were horrified at the loss.
Raven is a fan of Vampire the Bloodlines, both table top and the pc game. In her first tabletop rpg before the death of her father, she played a Lasombra anti-tribune who diablerised their sire for their freedom. Since then, she’s played Termere, Catiff, and Salubri characters. As a playstyle, she prefers stealth and conversation over reactionary violence, but her characters are usually quite liberal about using force when necessary, if given any reason to. Sometimes, she lets herself/her characters have a bit of fun; on a whim, she once seduced one of her sessions main villains with a nat 20, surprising the party and their players, and then killed them for accepting her offer.
Raven’s favorite video game is “Getting Over It With Bennette Foddy”; as a person who for the most part, does not play games, she was unused to the concept of ‘shitty controls’ and assumed her lack of experience was the culprit for the lack of progression and felt that the narrator’s words were heartfelt and reasonable. She spent most of the game zoning out and thinking over philosophies brought up by the narrator, and for the most part had a good time as she didn’t actually care about winning or not since she was put up to playing the game by Beast Boy as a gag.
Her favorite game in general is chess, and she is quite good at it, though she has odd self-sabotaging tendencies that versed opponents can take note of.
She isn’t allowed to play most rhythm games, as she runs the risk of going into a trance-like state and getting caught “in the loop”.
Raven keeps everything her friends give her; most of her room was furnished and decorated by such gifts. She has a stuffed animal collection that starfire and Cyborg add to & Jinx has given her quite a collection of dead things, and other raw materials that she uses for spell work. Because of Jinx’s habit, Roven jokingly refers to the girl as her ‘familiar’ from time to time. She gives all the skulls Jinx gives her their own names and personalities.
Raven rarely talks about Azarath; most assume its because it’s too painful for her to do so, but in truth, she simply doesn't know that much about its culture or history, as she had been heavily isolated in her society for her specialized upbringing.
Thinking about Azarath also is painful, because a part of her resents her people for her lack of a childhood, even as most of her insists they were right and good in their actions and discretion over her.
She had QUITE an adjustment period after arriving on Earth, though hers was more of a quiet integration than Star’s. Azarath ran on magic not technology, and she found it abstractly fascinating. She found Earth’s people to be extraordinarily sinful by Azarathian standards. Witch was equal measures a relief and nightmare for her to reconcile with. She secretly feels much of humanity is downright debased, but also feels that she has no right to judge anyone, as a half-demon makes her the literal worst of the worst there could be, according to her upbringing.
Raven didn’t know what money actually was until she asked Jinx why she robbed banks so often, assuming the girl and her team had just wanted to disrupt civil services. Azarath didn’t have money, and the Raven had no idea how anything for the Titans was funded as neither Cyborg nor Robin ever thought to talk to her about it.
Raven feels some resentment of normal people, for their ability to take their afterlives and emotions for granted, and resents herself for feeling that way. She doesn’t wish she was normal herself however, as the vain part of her, in some cruel self degrading way, likes having been such denstinedly important and resultantly steadfastly resilient in her aversion of it. She’s proud of her ability to resist her nature, and her father’s will.
She would have 100% stayed on the planet where she was worshipped by the tiny bird like aliens inhabiting it, if Starfire and Robin hadn’t insisted they all return to Earth.
She is terrible at most maths, but extremely keen on their uses, as she’s quite good at “guesstimation”, and many magic and social situations have some tendencies towards equations.
College professors love her for her philosophy debates. She can talk tails around anyone, about anything, at any time; her mind is almost constantly wondering downs paths of philosophical quandaries. Her friends are often concerned whenever her mumbled anecdotes reflect too nihilistic of a thought process.
Wild animals tend to be extremely wary of Raven, as they can sense her demonic heritage; most will simply avoid getting too close and will wander away if they get close enough to her general location to sense her. In close quarters, most animals will cower in front of her, and whine, though many animals will turn vicious, if the situation around their encounter is chaotic.
While Raven has no pets, wild birds, more notably ravens and crows, tend to flock around her whenever she steps outside. Though she insists she’s indifferent towards them, she’ll feed hand them at times, and often pets a particularly plump corvid she named “Mr. Chubby Beak”.
As an empath, she can tell implicitly if someone is lying to her, as she can feel the emotion of it in the person speaking to her, but as its not a mind-reading function, she can’t usually tell what the person talking to her is specifically lying about.
While Raven can feel her father’s genuine desire for family, his cruelty and Azarathian constructed evil are so abhorrent to her, that she wouldn’t ever allow herself to join his side, no matter how tragic or tempting the situations between them might feel.
*Trigon:
As he was created by the Azarathian monks magically ripping out their unwanted feelings and instincts taking form as their evil incarnate, Trigon is not a normal “Earthly’ demon. Though he has desires and opinions, he has very little in feeling of emotions, and most of his opinions on matters come across as really potent binary switches for himself. He wants a family, but is incapable of feeling ‘humanly’ love, though he recognises it’s importance, and even banks on Raven’s ability to love, wishing for her to use her abilities that he lacks to unite his kingdoms for him.
He considers Raven much as a toddler caught in their terrible twos; though he’s confident in her abilities and proud of her accomplishments to some extent, he’s ultimately waiting and prodding Raven’s path from afar to force her self-growth.
As Raven is his only female human child, and is by far the most powerful of his children, he considers her an indispensable resource, and will run though most other alternatives before resigning himself to killing her.
While he feels compelled to commit atrocities and do evil, he feels no enjoyment from it. He’s a secret philosopher, and his views are morbidly nihilistic, as his nature is inescapable. His overall apathy to the suffering of others and his overwhelming burden of perpetual boredom allow him to disregard or rationalize downright sickening acts of horror.
With his demonic sets of eyes, he can see an entire planet’s worth of people at one time in their heat-vision like capabilities, though he sees the people’s potential for his purposes, rather any actual heat of sensory data. He has no issues using this and his other abilities for his own gain.
He doesn’t really know how humans, women, or children work, and it was because of this, that Raven’s mother, his bride, Arella, was able to convince him to give Raven certain leeways that she otherwise would not have had.
He doesn’t understand Raven’s fashion tastes and is often confused point blank about her choices and terms of expressions.
Robin:
He has an almost uncanny ability to show up with the exact snack or food you didn’t know you were craving; especially when you’re upset or sick. Starfire is usually the recipient of such gestures, especially during her pregnancy (with M’ari), but occasionally he’ll bring food for his friends when they’re feeling down/under the weather.
Spends several nights in frustration, sleep-deprived tears iminent, over Raven’s strange leading questions, as his paronoia insists she’s testing him to see if he’s really as capable of a leader and a detective as he’s been groomed to be. He doesn’t know if her riddles are pure curiosity, references to her homeworld dimension, jibes at his expense, or an effort to adapt to Earthy mainstream comedy. Or all of the above.
Robin is actually not particularly bothered by Raven’s demonic aura, as he grew accustomed to weird and uncomfortable atmospheres in Gotham. He doesn’t know much about magic, or try to understand much about it, as he feels it isn't his place, but hopes his support and steadfast nature helps comfort Raven somewhat.
After seeing a few vines of that one dude who makes holiday pole dancing videos, Robin learned how to pole dance, and sometimes makes similar videos for mundane occasions. Lacking a clarinet, he substitutes a recorder. His recorder playing is terrible.
He’s terrible at dancing with Starfire, because she’s beautiful and he’s in love, and he can’t even. Starfire doesn’t mind though, and is content to lead her boyfriend as he bumbles his way along with her. half the time, Starfire forfeits the dance altogether, to float around in the air and sway a bit, which he thinks is divine.
He enjoys learning new dances with Raven, as she’s one of the few who opts to take the extracurricular training sessions with him; he enjoyed their swing dancing practices the most, as it was one of the few times he’d seen Raven look a little more carefree than usual. They weren’t very good at swing dancing, but he’s the first to admit that he and Raven make a mean waltzing pair, and entered more than one dancing competition with her.
He considers Raven something of a twin and a little sister, and then something of his first child by the time he grows into Nightwing, and will makes jokes to such effects on occasion, especially if Raven and Starfire are present. Similarly, he considers himself an uncle when Raven takes in the Tot Titans under her wing.
He often forgets that the rest of his family, his Batfamily, doesn’t know Raven, and often brings her up during phone calls, leading to more than one occasion where he’s had to explain to his estranged relations that yes,Starfire was still his girlfriend, and no, Raven wasn’t his girlfriend, but was essentially his sister, and no, he would never date more than one girl at a time.
He loves games like Portal, Fruit Ninja, and I Expect You To Die.
By the time Robin (Damien) joins the Titans, he’s already heard quite a bit about all of the Titans from Robin’s (Grayson’s) phone calls, and beelines towards Raven, whom he expects to have the best dirt & embarrassing stories about his brother. (She does.)
Damien warms up to Raven perhaps the most, out of all the Titans he meets, though their conversations are so seemingly biting with each other, that the other Titans often think the pair actively dislike one another. Damien enjoys the aura of calming Raven projects around her, and Raven distantly empathises with being raised to be weapon, and not really fitting into the definitions of what a “kid” is supposed to act like.
*Jinx:
Is convinced that most, if not half, of Raven’s problems are actually mental health based, and is horrified by the thought of Raven having lived this long without getting any sort of help for any of it that she thinks the girl probably needs. Therefore, Jinx spends quite a lot of time diving around the internet, looking things up and trying to find answers and solutions to hand to her for testing.
Jinx finds things. a lot. Feathers. Bones. Tiny weird and neat looking rocks. She collects them and will offer deceased prizes as objects of affection, much like a cat bring their catch to a communal pile. But with less mushy parts. Most of the Hive and the Titans are unsettled by the bones, though they appreciate the thought.
Jinx is half really flattered and proud, that Raven often steals her clothes, seeing it as a sign of respect from an admired ex-adversary, and is half upset that Raven looks better in her clothes than she does, in her opinion.
Her favorite type of music is anything resembling ‘rebellious female’, and introduces Raven to the witch house genre.
Fucking LOVES watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries.
She collects knives. She has dozens. She also has holsters for most of them, and wears servel of them at times, as a lingering impression of her Hive training.
She likes to talk strategies with Robin; as a team leader herself, she has quite a lot of insight and ideas & feels comfortable talking to him about that she can’t bring up around Titans East, as she doesn’t want to accidently usurp Bumble Bee, during her time with them. After joining the main team, she continues to talk to robin about such things, as it's a comfortable go-to topic to discuss by that point.
Fumes over the fact that the Titans don’t take her past leadership role seriously, or her past Hive team seriously, but bites her tongue because she refuses to give up the information that her team was always used as a diversion unit for some of the Hive’s other operations.
Secretly used Kid Flash as an in to the Titans, as meeting Madame Rogue broke her last thread of loyalty to the Hive way of life. She dated him until his promiscuous flirtations provided a strong enough out to respectful end things between them without risking her new position as a Titan. She found him a good enough friend, but was annoyed at how he, like her Hive friends, disregarded the parts of her that were ‘uncomfortable’ and focused on her ‘rehabilitated aspects’.
She secretly has a few feelings of resentment for Bumble Bee, as the girl lied to her for years as an undercover agent, though Jinx understands and respects it of her. As much as she’s upset at her friend for lying to her, she’s also impressed by Bee’s resolve and dedication for never letting anything slip.
Considers Mammoth her BFF for life, her brother from another mother, her best chum and right hand man. Gizmo, she feels, is her snarky little brother whom she loves, but detests in equal measure. Her other relationships with the Hive students vary. She was actually good friends with Kitten and Angel.
She knew vaguely about the cult portions of the Hive, but was never privy to much of it, for her use in other areas.
She can play the guitar well enough to please a diner’s worth of people on open mic night or pop a smile on anyones face at a slumber party. Her bad luck breaks a lot of strings, however.
Her bad luck builds up over time when not in use. Jinx has to discharge it frequently in small to medium doses in order to prevent serious harm to those around her; such accident have included burst pacemakers, car accidents, and buildings breaking down, and people, animals, and plants spontaneously combusting.
Being next to her for long lengths of time greatly increases the chance of catching a sickness, be it something like a common cold, or cancer.
She has many scars; the ones on her body are largely from her stints heisting and training, and the ones on her face are from the many torn and botches piercings she’s given herself over the years. Due to luck and proclivities, her piercings never stay in longer than a week or two before getting ripped out, and she simply pierces over the scars that form from her healing factor. She also has a body spreading scar from where she was struck by lightning as a child.
Her lightning scar faintly glows whenever she flares up her powers.
The back of her shoulders say “Bad Luck”, which she feels is ample warning for anyone she comes into contact with under any circumstances. She also has a stylized tattoo of a black cat on her inner wrist that she gave herself during a class once.
She has a pet sphynx cat named Hex, and loves him dearly, even though he’s a scamp and prefers sitting in Raven’s lap instead of hers. (He enjoys Raven’s hotter-than-an-average-person’s body temperature, as he has no fur and chills easily.)
Jinx is morbidly fascinated with Raven, having looked up to her when they were adversaries; when they were on opposites sides, Jinx even entertained the idea of choosing Raven as her arch nemesis, which is a conceptual relationship she took very seriously, as all of the arch villains she looked up to growing up held their arch nemeses to high importances. This made becoming friends with Raven very awkward, when she switched sides, as there is no same-side sort of rivalry that an arch nemesis could easily translate into, especially as they had never actually reached the point of being official nemeses. Jinx tried to explain it all to Bumble Bee once, who considers the matter the equivalent of being “ex- almost-dysfunctional-girlfriends”.
Since befriending Raven, they essentially became best friends, over shared bonds of magic, their unfortunate natures, the unfortunate consequences of their actions or not-actions, the way people regard them for being different, their shared interests in media and music, ect. Without meaning to, they starting hanging out all the time, and it becomes common enough to always find one of them by looking for the other.
Jinx feels that even though she’s in over her head with helping Raven sort out herself out, she the best suited for the job and is determined to help Raven learn about herself and accept herself as best she can.
Cyborg:
Proudly plays Raven’s songs snippets in his car, when she shares her samples with him.
Nicknamed the Tower’s mainframe ‘Karen’ after watching spongebob with Beast Boy; the name stuck and since the mainframe runs throughout the Tower itself, the entire Tower is technically named Karen, and it’s become a running gag.
He’s the go-to Titan that the others ask about Earthly matters. Raven tends to ask him about technology, while Starfire tends to ask him about societal norms; as the resident Tower physician, he’s also the Titan to go to for ‘the talks’, which he gave to Raven (as she grew up in a monastery and was not expected to live past Trigon’s invasion) and Beast Boy, as for most of his crime fighting career, was considered ‘too young” by the Doom Patrol to be informed.
Cyborg is Beast-Boy’s most frequent game channel guest, as he usually helps with any co-op or multiplayer games; he loves vehicle based games the most, such as racing games, truck simulators, and Rocket League. He also loves the God of War series and Skyrim. He has over 500 hours logged into Skyrim. He holds no regrets, and will happily tell anyone about any of his playthroughs and characters.
Cyborg’s processors sometimes get overloaded trying to “load in” every item on the shelves when getting groceries. To compensate, he usually turns down his other senses to make more “processing power” for his visuals; which usually means he has a genunaily harder time hearing his friends at stores then when he’s at home with them.
Starfire:
Listens to really obscure music genres and adds them to the Tower’s communal music files.
It’s not only through lip contact that her species can learn information, though language is most commonly transferred through kissing; her species is actually as good at fighting as it is, because their bodies literally learn the movements their opponents use against them. This means theortically, a Tamaranian will get stronger every time they fight an opponent, especially if they are already familiar with it in a way that’s passively terrifying.
She loves arts and crafts, to the point where she’s almost always doing two or three different kinds at any given time. There’s usually craft supplies strewn about anywhere she’s been, through any supplies she’s not using are usually sorted and in their proper places. She loves going to stores and picking up kits for different kinds of crafts for all sorts of odds and ends.
She loves gardening. She loves her flowers with an intense passion, and messing up her garden is one of the only ways you can actually make her seriously upset.
She considers Raven the sister she always wished Blackfire could have been; she considers Raven her closest friend and her bond of loyalty with her is practically incapable of being broken, to the point where Raven fears that if she should ever turns evil, Starfire would simply cease fighting and forgivingly allow Raven to do as she would without resistance, unable to terminate her if the need arouse. Starfire considers this an improbable situation to arise, and has vowed to ensure that such a future could never come to pass to begin with.
When Starfire and Nightwing’s daughter Mar’i Grayson is born, Starfire names Raven her daughter’s godmother.
Beast Boy:
He loves rhythm games; DDR, Audiosurf, Beat Saber, ect. He puts in the practise to be really good at them, but it is possible to beat him.
He will not stop collecting stray animals. He can’t stop. He won’t ever stop. He at least, manages to find good homes for most of them, though there is still an overabundance at the Tower he refuses to part with at any given time.
He loves music that references the ever changing trends and memes of the time, and loves introducing such songs to his friends even when they dont him to, or when he’s already played the song for them several times before.
Out of all the Titans, Beast Boy is the one most affected by Raven’s demonic aura. He can smell in in her body & it sets the animal instincts off within him to be exceedingly wary around her, which he feels guilty about, and is why he tries so hard to come across to Raven as though it doesn’t actually bother him, and like he’s completely fine with her. Even with the ‘creepy’ bits; not knowing that his denial and good intentions, actually make it harder for Raven to trust him & feel comfortable around him, as it sets off her empathic warning bells. There isn’t much either one of them can do about the state of things however, so they try to ignore it best they can, though Beast Boy feels like Raven’s biting sarcasm and passive aggression is a silent challenge for him to work harder around her.
*Terra:
She loves memes, but the more deadpannedly-absurd ones. She’s the one who would #Mood, #Relatable, #Same on images of pictures with really bizzare energy.
She resents Raven ,as she feels Raven was given “special treatment” while having even “worse” issues controlling herself and her powers then Terra did; feeling that it wasn’t fair for Raven’s bursts of temper tantrums were simply brushed under the rug, while Terra’s unstable powers had always been shoved back in her face.
She hates schoolwork and the drudgery of civilian life with a passion. She committed to keeping it up, however.
She refuses to leave Jump City, under her anxiety fueled hope that if her powers get the better of her again, the Titan’s won't have far to go to set things right.
Along with apple pie, Terra loves candied yams.
While she isn’t exactly fond of gardening by any means, she has a rather impressive collection of tiny succulents in small brightly colored pots.
She doesn’t have any favorite games, in terms of sentimental value, but her two most played games are the Sims and Overwatch.
She can and has, poured energy drinks into coffee and made peace with the concept of her demise.
She can and will fight god behind a denny’s dumpster at 3am on a tuesday. She gives no fucks.
Owns like 6 snuggies.
She fucking HATES dirt inside a house. She can and WILL clean anything dusty, as she can sense the particles and it aggravates her skin after sitting with it for too long.
*Tot Titans:
Melvin takes the full hero name “Melvin the Magnificent” when she gets older, which was Raven’s pet name for her.
Tommy Tantrum, like Black Canary can shatter ear drums.
Teether refuses to eat real food, and can and WILL eat anything non-edible if he can get his mouth on it. This makes him an effective garbage disposal of sorts, but he’s been banned from testing out weather or not nuclear & chemical waste would be harmful for him or not.
Tommy likes firetrucks, and wants to be one when he grows up.
Tommy, as a kid, is afraid of the Snuggle Bear, the Smokey the Bear, and other commercial type animated bears on TV, because they seem like soulless imitations of Bobby.
Tommy was the hardest child for Raven to mentor/raise, as his tantrums were, well, spectacularly awful, but after learning how to properly teach him that tantrums weren’t the best way to communicate and steadily working with him, Tommy took to Raven’s guidance with great intensity.
Melvin is the most distant, as her younger brothers had an easier time growing up with Raven as their new “mom”, but she idolizes Raven quietly, in her own way, and wants to live up to whatever expectations she thinks Raven has of her.
Melvin never “outgrows” Bobby, but reinvents him from time to time, to give him better edges and abilities in tricky situations.
Most of Melvin’s imagination-creations are heavily influenced by Raven and the other Titans., though they remain loyal to her genuine interests and aesthetics.
Melvin is quite fond of tea-parties.
Teether loves trains & starts building models sets as he gets bigger.
Teether’s first cuss word is “fuck”, and Raven will never forgive Beast Boy for it.
Tommy and Melvin’s first cuss word is “shit”, and it was actually something Melvin picked up from crimefighting, as Robin sighed it under his breath after a villain made a run for it. The older teens didn’t know Melvin heard it however, so it was quite a shock to them when Jinx reported it to the dinner table after giving the two Tots a time out.
Melvin gets away with cussing the most as she grows up, as she tends to use them the way Raven and Jinx do, making it harder for them to catch her at it.
When assisting with tasks, Melvin takes the role very seriously, and usually involves a clipboard into the mix to keep track of things in an “official” manner.
To stop the fighting, Raven gives Teether his own blanket, so Tommy can keep his.
Tommy loves camping with a passion.
Because of his suit, villains usually first assume that Tommy has fire-based powers and generally get knocked out by his super sonic screams.
Because of the nature of her powers, Melvin is HIGHLY discouraged from watching horror movies, to keep any “Raven-Tower-Haunting” scenarios from recurring.

His family has a group chat, and Noah posts the most in the group chat out of everyone else. But, sometimes he and his mom can get into small arguments. Both parents are doctors, and make bank, so they pay for Noah’s college and his dorm room.

turn off’s. Someone touching him right as he wakes up in the morning, degradation/humiliation, food play, age play, hard biting, hitting of any kind- really, Noah can take a good, rough dicking but don’t beat the shit out of him while doing so. Being asked to hit someone else also makes him nervous
love language. Vocal about his adoration, comfortable silences, the brush of a hand against his love’s. More touching in general, making meals for two, love notes, late night confessions, cuddling in the dark with just the T.V. on, and attentive.
relationship tendencies. He’s never been in a serious relationship before, but he loves going on dates with who he’s dating. He’ll want to spoil them with affection, and he trusts them with a key to his room, his laptop and phone- everything. Noah will definitely wanna hold hands out in public, a very subtle way of saying ‘this one’s mine.’ Invites them to hang out with his friends, so his s/o eventually feels apart of the group.
MISCELLANEOUS.
character’s theme song(s). -
hobbies to pass the time. Hiking with friends or family, video games ( mainly rpgs ), reading romance novels or watching romantic comedies, cooking treats for his friends, at home chemistry projects, online browsing, exploring every piece of land/building he hasn’t seen yet
mental illnesses. -
physical illnesses. -
left or right brained. He has both traits, but sides more with the left
fears. Pigeons and spiders are big ones. More fears will develop over time the more his world expands.
self confidence level. About average! Noah has confidence in himself, but not to the extent that he’s cocky or self-absorbed. He’ll get down on himself from time to time, as everyone does, but is quick to pick himself back up.
vulnerabilities. Cares a lot about the thoughts and feelings of his friends, and if they’re upset with him, he beats himself up over it. Everything directed at him in those moments he’ll hold with him for along time, both words and actions.

Wrap It Up - Ending a campaign
This week’s Question from a Denizen is definitely one that hits close to home. An Anonymous reader asks, “What is the best way to finish a campaign with a bunch of loose ends? I'm DMing Princes of the Apocalypse and I want to have two of the rival cults have an ultimate showdown, but is that too sloppy? I would usually go through the intricacies of the cults and such but it's starting to just feel like dungeon crawl after dungeon crawl.”
I’m a sucker for endings. One of my favorite things about recent T.V. shows that I’ve been invested in (Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Kipo and the Age of Wonder Beasts, etc.) is that they’ve been allowed to end, rather than go on indefinitely beyond the point of interest. Too many stories I’ve loved have simply dragged on too long until they’re no longer funny or fun, or simply go nowhere and have their series canceled without an ending. The original Dungeons & Dragons cartoon was supposed to have an ending, but it was canceled before it was filmed. We never knew if the kids had found a ways home, or if they were trapped in the Realm forever. Happily, this was rectified years later when the script for Requiem was finally released.
Likewise, too many role-playing game campaign I’ve been involved with have simply stopped rather than ended, and that’s been true of my own games as well as games I’ve been a player in. I remember a Deadlands game I put together. I collected all the books, long after they were out of print. I put together props, music, even food. I had story arcs, a group of players, we played a handful of sessions...and then external forces as well as internal issues with the group simply made the game not fun for me. First a game session or two got canceled, then we went on hiatus...and I can’t even remember if I ever officially said I wasn’t going back to running it. I think that’s all too common in RPGs, and I know firsthand it doesn’t give good feelings to DMs or players.
So, Anonymous, should you end the campaign? Well, that depends. Are you and your players having fun? Do you think playing the rest of the campaign as written will be fun? Do you think that you could change things about the campaign to circumvent the parts that seem to be dragging it down? If so, I’d recommend bypassing that part to get to the parts that you feel enthusiastic about running. If you’re looking forward, and nothing about the rest of the campaign is exciting you, then maybe it’s time to bring things to a big conclusion. If a showdown with the cults, or between the cults, will bring a satisfying conclusion, then go for it. But in RPGs, I think it’s prudent to fall back on the words of Neil Young...or the Kurgen...or however you want to think of it... “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” It’s better to have a memorable, apocalyptic ending to a game than to just let it putter out.
The important thing to remember is that, to paraphrase Jeremy Crawford, there’s no D&D police that will come to your house to tell you you’re playing something wrong. Once you begin running a pre-printed module, it becomes your story. I rewrote whole chunks of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist when I ran it, mixing and matching encounters I liked from the four different paths, adding a kidnapping plot, and adding personal plots for some of the players as well. You could suddenly change course by revealing that the force behind the Elemental Cults is actually a dragon or dragons...or an alliance of Giants...or a wizard. The point is, you can change whatever you want to tell a great story.
There’s a lot to be said for ending a campaign with a huge fight, because that gives the PCs a chance to show off their endgame abilities. But you want to give your PCs a chance to have their role-playing endings as well. I’m going to be wrapping up my own campaign soon, which has been running for 10 years, and yes, there’s going to be a couple of big battles. The Tarrasque needs to be put down, and there’s also the cult that raised it in the first place. I’ve already told the players, however, that I want to work with them on epilogues that will play out after all those battles are done.
So, the TL:DR of this article is...yes...end your campaign. Give it a big send off. Give it the close it deserves. Then say goodbye to it and start thinking about what’s next. I can say from experience that the stories with endings are the ones we look back on most fondly, telling stories about what happened and reminiscing about our beloved characters and their adventures.
