Kazakhstan Independence Day 2023 Date: December 16, 2023 Today’s Doodle celebrates Kazakhstan Independence Day. After decades of Soviet rule, the country won its freedom on this day in 1991. The name Kazakh, which means "wanderer," evokes the nation’s nomadic history and its people’s deep love for freedom. In fact, more than 130 distinct ethnic groups call Kazakhstan home and the holiday offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the country's rich and diverse heritage.  As pictured in today’s artwork, the Kazakh flag flies proudly throughout the nation. The light blue flag, a symbol of the vast skies that nomadic tribes have traditionally lived under, is adorned with a classic golden Kazakh motif, sun, and eagle. Independence Day officially begins on December 16th and festivities extend into the following day as locals continue to enjoy picturesque yurts and authentic delicacies such as fermented dairy drinks and tandyr nan bread.  Happy Independence Day, Kazakhstan! Soldier killed in military checkpoint crash in Kyiv

A man has been detained after crashing at high speed into a military roadblock with his car shortly after midnight on July 25. The Kyiv City Police reported that the crash killed one 49-year-old National Guard soldier and injured two others.

According to the police, the crash happened at 12:05 a.m. at a checkpoint on Beresteiska Avenue near the Svyatoshin metro station. Kyiv has a curfew that begins at 12 a.m. and ends at 5 a.m.

Residents without special permits are forbidden from being outside their homes or traveling around the city by foot or with any means of transport.

The suspect could face up to eight years in prison. The Kyiv City Prosecutor Office reported that preliminary investigations are in progress and the driver been detained. No alcohol was detected in his body.

In May, a National Guard soldier was killed when a car driven by a judge of a Kyiv district court crashed into a checkpoint on the same road.

The accident happened on May 25 at 11:55 p.m. as the soldier was setting up a roadblock on Beresteiska Avenue. The judge, Oleksii Tandyr, was intoxicated while driving.

On July 17, it was reported that Tandyr will remain in custody until August 26, when the pre-trial investigation of the case is scheduled to end.  

Kyiv authorities report shooting down all Russian drones in latest overnight attack

Russia attacked Kyiv with Iranian-made Shahed drones overnight on July 25 in its sixth drone attack on the capital this month, the Kyiv City Military Administration said on Telegram, adding that all incoming drones had been shot down by air defenses.

Credit to @anastasia_lundqvist : Shaking to spill some juices on the coal to roast the lamb brisket for very last seconds in tandoori. Literally sewed two parts of brisket together and around the metal holder. Put apples, peaches , onion and bell pepper in the middle. Ready in one hour. Original sound. The smell is indescribable. 👌🏻🔪 Баранья грудинка в тандыре. Швея из меня самая бездарная, но по такому делу кое-как сшила обе части грудинки, пустив вдоль стенок круглой решетки, в серединку накидала яблок, персиков, болгарского перца и лука.
