Day 4: Superheroes

A/N: Welp it looks like I got my days mixed up and am running a day late, but no fear! This is for day 4 of this year's TCR birthday bash, superheroes. I thought I'd go with something more lighthearted today, so here is a little ficlet regarding a different way the cat kingdom could have tried to thank Haru :D

"We have decided," said the cat on Haru's windowsill, "that you must be thanked appropriately for saving Prince Lune."

"Uh-huh," Haru said. What she really wanted to say was something like, "I'm dreaming, right?" or "Excuse me, do you know you're a cat?" or even "AAHHHH" coupled with violently swinging a chair – but cats who could talk probably could do other things they weren't meant to, and she didn't want to find out if that included curses.

"Given the magnitude of our debt, the King has decreed that we shall do everything in our power to make you happy," the cat continued, oblivious to Haru weighing up the pros and cons of punting it off a first floor window. "For instance, our research has indicated that humans your age tend to struggle with low confidence, body image, and preoccupation with finding a mate."

"Uh-huh," Haru said again, for entirely different reasons.

"So, to show our gratitude, we have eliminated such problems!"

Haru stared. "...How?"

"Come to a mirror, and I'll show you!"

This had to be a dream. But now Haru was curious to see what her sleeping mind would conjure up in her reflection. She fumbled for her phone and switched on the camera. Maybe her skin would now be porcelain smooth. Maybe her hair would look effortlessly perfect. Maybe she would see entirely a different face.

She was disappointed when there appeared to be nothing changed. "Okay, cat, I'm looking."

"Open your mouth!"

She gave the cat a dubious side-eye, but did so. A maw lined with sharp feline teeth filled the picture.

Haru snapped her mouth shut.

"Do you like it?" the cat asked, with a tone that indicated this was a rhetorical question and that she could start thanking it any time now.

"You gave me fangs??"

"Canines! Fangs have venom!"

"Is that really what's importa–" She felt wood chips beneath her nails and quickly withdrew her hand from her desk. "And claws? What did you do to me?"

"We gave you the ideal body!" the cat announced.

"You gave me claws!"

"Claws are attractive! They're far better than those blunt little stumps you call nails! This way you can prove your hunting prowess and win a mate!"

"You think I'm gonna get a boyfriend because I can catch mice now?"

"Oh, Miss Haru, at your size you should set your sights on much bigger prey! Squirrels and rats, at least! Our research also indicated you were frustrated with your lack of balance–"

"This feels needlessly personal."

"–so we gave you feline grace!"

"Wait," Haru said as she realised the other insinuation of the cat's comment, "have you been watching me?"

"Yes!"

"Oh." Haru blinked. She'd expected at least a little guilt in the admission.

"If this is not sufficient thanks, I'm sure we can find other ways to improve your life–"

"No! I mean, no thank you. This is..." easy enough to hide. "This is fine. You don't need to thank me any more." This was not fine. This was so far over the line of 'fine' that it was a dot on the horizon.

"Are you sure? There was some debate over the inclusion of a tail..."

"I'm good."

"–at least on a permanent basis."

"What?"

"Don't worry, we realised that a persistant tail would require a strain on your wardrobe–"

"What does that–"

"–so we decided that you should get the best of both worlds and have it only when needed!"

A beat passed. A herd of questions hoofed through her mind. "And... the wardrobe problem?" she hazarded at last.

The cat waved a breezy paw. "Oh, don't worry about that! We've sorted it out."

Haru's mouth formed the word 'how' and then her mind thought better of it. "I don't suppose I could convince you to take it all back, could I?" she tried instead.

The cat's mouth wobbled. "You don't like it?"

Well darn it. Now she felt bad. "No, of course I like it!" she lied. "I just don't think I really need it. Or deserve it. I mean, I just acted without thinking, I wasn't being brave."

"Oh." The cat blinked, and the watery look vanished immediately. "Oh," it said again, with far too much assurance, "this is one of those adolescent lack of confidence things, isn't it?"

"I – no?"

"You don't think you're worthy of such a gift because you don't believe in yourself!" the cat proclaimed, with all the confidence of someone adding one plus one and getting three. It patted Haru's hand. "Don't worry, the whole cat kingdom has agreed that you earned this, so enjoy it! Oh, and before I forget..." With a flourish, the cat whipped a little velvet box out of thin air. "The final part to your reward."

Despite all her misgivings, Haru took the box and cautiously opened it. A beautiful silver necklace with a shimmering cat charm rested inside, its single visible eye carved out of a golden-brown gemstone. (Tiger eye, she suspected.)

"It's... lovely," she stuttered. "But I can't accept–"

"You can and you will! Goodbye!" And before Haru could fumble for any other excuses, the cat had leapt out of the window, Haru still holding the box. After a dubious moment passed, she gingerly put the necklace on. (After all, it was gorgeous. It would be a waste not to wear it.) Then she picked up the phone and was halfway through dialling Hiromi, when she hesitated.

Just what was she going to say?

Yeah, so you know the cat I saved yesterday, well it turns out it was a prince...

Look, when you see me, don't make a fuss over my teeth or my claws...

So it looks like cats are trying to help my love life...

She put the phone down. No, best to just not mention it and hope no one noticed. After all, who would jump to the conclusion that they were blessings from a cat and not just a figment of the imagination? Haru barely believed it, and her windowsill was still warm from where the cat had sat.

Then, because it was a Tuesday morning and school didn't accept sick notes for 'my entire physiology was altered by cats in the night' she dragged herself out of bed and prepared herself for the day.

It was just as she was finishing changing into her uniform that the giant rat stampeded past her front door. (Haru was fairly sure that 'stampede' was the right word for, even if it was only a single beast, it did have half a dozen feet.)

Since this wasn't an acceptable thing to see, not even on a gloomy Tuesday schoolday, Haru naturally leant of her window out to better see the chaos. She vaguely wondered if she should call the police – but rather suspected that things like rampaging rats taller than a bungaloo were probably already on the police's radar.

What were police even meant to do about unnatural megafauna? Build a giant mousetrap? Ask it politely to turn itself in? This kind of shenanigan, Haru thought, probably weren't covered in training.

Really, she continued to think, this kind of shenanigan was more the territory of comic book heroes or magical girl responsibilities.

It was as that exact thought struck, that Haru became engulfed in golden light. She felt her form shift, her hair change, and most notably, her clothes alter.

I've literally just gotten ready for school, she thought, and then she was deposited back on the floor. She looked down at herself.

What she was now wearing could best be described as a marriage between a leopard-print leotard and her school uniform. There were bows. There were ribbons. There was a sparkly tutu (and a pair of shorts, much to Haru's relief).

And, as she moved to sit down in disbelief, she discovered there was – emerging from perfectly-tailored shorts and tutu – a tail.

"Well," she said eventually, "I guess that does solve the wardrobe problem."

A/N: Gee, some of you may be thinking, it sure is serendipitous/a coincidence that the same day Haru gets 'superpowers' there appears a monster! Well, I'm here to tell you that it's less happenstance, and more like the truck driver who nearly ran over Lune is having the worst Tuesday of his life. (Don't worry, he gets transformed back with only an increase in cheese preference and a fun day explaining to his boss why he didn't turn up for work.) As far as the cats are concerned, if you reward a human by turning her into the best thing to be (cat, obvs) then you punish a human by turning him into the worst thing to be (a rodent).

Matthew Goode & sleepwear / lounging wear Part 3/4

I am continuing my exploration of Matthew's roles with a sartorial focus (we have had formal wear and knitted vests so far), this time on what he has been wearing in bed and lounging about. For those sniggering at the back of the class (you know who you are), the emphasis is on 'wearing' (well just about) 😉.

Today we have Matthew in a Pink shirt (great sleep wear!) looking alluring, Colley in his jammies being all melancholic (I think he is waiting for Department Q news lol), Ben in electric blue underwear (OMG I know where Adow's wardrobe department got their inspiration from!), Bob looking gorgeous in blue silk pyjamas (Bob rocks sleepwear or any clothes really!) and sweet Rex looking all demure and cute in tartan pyjama bottoms (as the spouse of a Scott I totally approve).

Well this is a tough choice. I vote for Matthew in Pink on account of the come-hither look 🩷.

I wanna say the one time they went past 3 weeks was when he was in NYC shooting TCR and she was overseas shooting Dune. It was 3 weeks and a few days when he flew to see her. But otherwise they've pretty much always stuck to exactly 3 weeks or less. He left LA three weeks ago today which furthers that point

Was this the first time he flew to Budapest to see her, or the second time (when he travelled for the weekend only for Z to go to NYC for her birthday anyway 💀)? I thought those were 3 weeks or less too, but a little over 3 weeks kinda counts for the rule right?

*Edit- I went to check to SIL timeline and both times whilst Z was in Budapest and Tom in NYC they kept to their 3 weeks or less rule. But did find that they went nearly 4 weeks without seeing each other after the Emmys when Z went back to Budapest then they reunited in Paris around their time of when we assume their anniversary is

The other times I found they were apart for over 3 weeks was after they went to Venice and Z went to the states and did a bunch of brand work, then between the Dune London premiere and when they went to Indian Wells final, then between the Challengers London premiere and when Z came back to London after the met gala, and finally in June 2024 when Z went to the Bay and was spotted in home goods stores a bunch. But all of those were still less than 4 weeks so I'd say the 3-week (ish) rule still applies

Vesicles form naturally during the processes of secretion (exocytosis), uptake (endocytosis), and the transport of materials within the plasma membrane. Vesicles perform a variety of functions. Because it is separated from the cytosol, the inside of the vesicle can be made to be different from the cytosolic environment. For this reason, vesicles are a basic tool used by the cell for organizing cellular substances. Day 4: Secret Heritage

A/N: Day 4, secret heritage! This is based loosely on the concept of the Princess Diaries, an AU that has somehow never made an appearance (afaik) despite Haru’s VA being the star of the movie.

There should be, Haru felt, a limit on the number of shocks one person should be expected to endure in a day.

For instance, discovering that one is the heir apparent to a crown would - and should, frankly - be quite enough for one afternoon, but Haru had also been enlightened to the fact that her waiting throne not only oversaw the Cat Kingdom, and also that it demanded marriage to a suitable spouse.

This was why she was hiding in the second-best pantry, squished between a bag of sugar and several boxes of canned tuna.

This kind of nonsense, Haru thought stubbornly, should happen to klutzy schoolgirls and chosen ones, not debt-laden librarians in their mid-twenties.

The pantry door opened and a face appeared. It was, Haru supposed, not a bad face as feline features went, with soft ginger fur and bright green eyes, but she’d seen far too many Cats in the last few hours to be anything but decidedly biased against them. “Excuse me,” the Cat said, in polite but bemused tones, “but you seem to be occupying the space where the tea should be.”

A noise rattled from the kitchen beyond and, spurred on by the thought of her newly-found uncle pushing newly-found potential suitors her way, she grabbed the owner of the face and dragged the rest of him into the pantry. It was only as the door slammed shut behind them, dropping them into squalid darkness, that she realised she’d instinctively clamped a hand over his mouth, and that aforementioned mouth was nearly a foot above hers.

The Cat, in retaliation, merely stood there, making no attempt to escape as feet thundered beyond the door.

When the noise passed, Haru sheepishly lowered her hand.

“Not fond of tea, I take it,” said the Cat, perplexingly cheerfully.

“Sorry,” Haru whispered.

“No, no, it’s my fault. I should have knocked before coming barging in,” he said. “How unforgivably rude of me.”

Haru’s gaze flickered over her accidental captive and, as her eyes adapted, noted - alongside his prim and proper speech - the grey morning suit and top hat marking him as one of the nobility, or at least someone who liked to think themselves as such, and the abrupt contrast it struck with their current surroundings.

“Who are you?”

The Cat swept his top hat off with as much theatrics as the cramped space would allow. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Baron Humbert von Gikkingen, but my friends call me Baron. And you must be the elusive princess whose absence is causing uproar in the rest of the palace. What is a princess doing in the second-best pantry?”

“What’s a baron doing looking in a second-best pantry?” Haru shot back.

“Trying to make tea. And you?”

“Trying not to get married.”

Baron nodded. “An endeavour I understand all too well. How is it working out for you?”

“Fantastic, until about thirty seconds ago.”

"My apologies.” The Cat cast a curious look over her, polite but questioning. “Is it indeed true what they say?”

Destiny, I don't know if i can ask this question but there has been some discussion on Zendaya's role in the Nolan film and how bith her and Lupita allegedly supporting roles whilst Tom, Damon and Hathaway are core leads. THR also said Rob was a lead, but their the only ones cause the rest of the trades haven't said one thing.

On one hand, I'm a fan of both Tom and Z, and if their in a film together outside of SM, I'm there regardless. But I'm also trying to be objective and fair, and see from both sides. Although I was annoyed with some stans complaining, I can see why they're frustrated.

Zendaya is the most impactful actress/celeb of her generation, and yet she's not been a lead that much. She's always playing roles in service of yt leads directed by white men.

Daisy Edgar-Jones has been a lead 4 times in a film, and Sydeny Sweeney has been a lead 7 times and is currently working to be in a lead in two other projects rn, her biopic and that movie with Amanda. Zendaya has been famous for longer and has been a lead twice (not counting the drama), and mainly supporting roles despite her being the reason most ppl go to see a project. I remember when Dune Part 1 came, and ppl were complaining how little screen time she had and Denis promised her in the sequel he would add more character depth for her even to the annoyance of Dune purists which I personally feel was a good choice considering in the books, Chani is just like Javier bardems character lol and that wouldn't be fun to watch.

However, I do think it's interesting that these fans only have this criticism now, considering in past interviews, Z has spoken how she'd rather be a small role in a great film than a lead in a bad film and despite Daisy and Sydney being leads only a few of those films are watchable lol. Most are duds, no shade, and won't be remembered if you're not a core stan. The main issue is that they hate her with Tom. Again, I don't want to police fandoms cause ppl should be entitled to vent sometimes, I didn't always agree with that Tom blog thatwas here but there times I was frustrated with the Francessa situation and how it was handled and those washed allegations and not all blogs are equipped to deal with anons who want to vent and be negative. But those fans want nothing to do with Tom, and I just know if Tom wasn't the lead and it was someone else, ppl wouldn't be this vexed. It'd be understandable if he was a horrible person, but he's not, and that sometimes sucks as a fan of both.

Not to gas him too much because I read on that x app that female fans of yt men are equivalent to boy mothers😱, but Tom is in privileged position as a man and still is a good person, outside looking in. Most actors around his age are grinding like crazy to make their mark, and oftentimes, male actors are bad to date because they are very selfish because it ride or die for them. Tom isn't like that. He doesn't dominate his career over his relationships. Like, no offence to these guys cause they are talented, but Glen Powell and Timothee speak about how much their career means so much to them and what they've sacrificed. Glen lost his relationship over that showmance and Timothee before Kylie was not a relationship guy at all, like if it's affecting his career, he'd drop the girl lol. I say this as someone who was a fan at the beginning but now more of a casual fan, lol. Kylie is his longest, but it's lasted cause she's more successful than him and has the finance to work around his intense schedule. He recently admitted that he went method for that dylan biopic and didn't communicate with family and friends for 3 months cause of it. Tom wouldn't do that. Even when he was struggling mentally with TCR, he was always making time for his charities and going to see Z in Budapest and Jordan. That's his perogative, but most male actors wouldn't do that.

I also remember you and some other fans wanting Tom to take more supporting roles to take the pressure of being in leads and to add more variety to his filmography. So, having Tom as the lead for Nolan and American Speed is great, but also like Tom, we are going forward but backwards, if that makes sense.

Another viewpoint that both sides need to consider is that Nolan is known for his ensembles in films, and the most impactful films have the best supporting roles.

Heath Ledger, Cillian Murphy, Elliot Page, Christian Bale in the prestige, Dunkirk supporting roles, Rob Pattinson, RDJ, Emily Blunt, Tom Hardy...

One could argue they were the best parts of their films but also none of them are as imoactful and are the current A-list like Z is, according to Complex and THR list.

Also, sorry for the rant, lol. I just like to see both sides of a situation because ppl need to see others' perspectives and not take it personally. I'm speaking for myself cause I do take things personally😭

Zendaya is the one choosing these roles. She might be getting offers for lead roles, but maybe they're not roles that call to her, or they're crappy. Women in Hollywood (especially woc) don't always have the best options for roles. It's just the truth. She's more than likely very picky.

Hmm... 🤔 I mean, I think it's nice to recognize Tom's good qualities without putting other actors down. 🥴

First of all, I feel that it's just difficult in the Hollywood industry to date just in general. 😔 As an actor, your life is VERY transient. I can see how that would make it difficult for many to date or be in serious relationships.

Tom and Z got very LUCKY. Let's not forget that. They've also been dating each other for like 8 years and are in a totally different stage of their relationship (I say engaged lol 🤭) than they were just 4 years ago, and compared to other actors. I wouldn't compare TZ (who have been dating for 8 years and are more likely engaged) to a couple that's only been dating each other for 2 or 3 years. Keep in mind too that TZ as well weren't moving in this way at the beginning of their careers. They were moving very differently. Recall how many DROUGHTS we had during the Tomdaya 1.0 period lol. 😅 They were also long distance for years, so they have always had to make the most of their time with each other. Vs. other couples who usually live in the same city as their significant others, or, at least the same continent rofl and can see them more freely.

Second..... I think another thing we have to keep in mind is that Tom isn't having to "grind" like he used to because he has Disney/MCU money. 💰 He was the lead of a HUGE major franchise at like, age 19. MOST actors aren't making bank like that. No offense. And all of the actors you mentioned aren't in a position to just coast like that.

Glen Powell for example, has been acting for years, but he is currently in his mid-30s and is JUST now starting to get his career going. He's JUST now receiving lead roles and recognition for his work after years of working as a background and supporting actor with minor screen time. Glen didn't have Spiderman in his early 20s to set him up in a rich money situation where he doesn't have to hustle.

Same with Timothee.

I think it's just good for fans to recognize that. Also, there's nothing wrong with hustling. You should hustle now so you don't have to hustle later. Z did the same exact thing. In fact, Tom did the same exact thing as well if you notice.

Also, I feel like MOST actors sacrifice a lot in this industry. Tom himself has sacrificed a lot. His personal time, a normal life, being able to walk down the street unnoticed, SLEEP lol, etc. MOST actors sacrifice a lot to be in this industry. It's not an easy industry to be in. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with Timmy, Glen, or other actors mentioning how much they've sacrificed for their work, but maybe that's just me.

Well, honestly? I think more actors than you realize have gone "method" for at least one role in their career rofl 🤣 Do I think it's the best method of acting? Most definitely! 😊 So far, I have loved a lot of Nolan's ensemble films (i.e. "Inception", "Oppenheimer", "TENET"). They're usually very well done. 😀 His supporting characters (usually male) tend to have really great roles. I'm SUPER excited about this one. 😁

TCR EPISODE 9

Fuck- this episode was so tense and heartbreaking but so so good! Definitely the toughest episode to watch so far. Masterclass in acting from all the cast involved! Major spoilers below!

1. With minimal dialogue from Danny this episode Tom brilliantly spoke through his eyes/body language to convey Danny’s inner thoughts/emotions. I truly was heartbroken watching Danny watch Candy betray him and stay loyal to Marlin. Also his face during the final scene! I truly couldn’t handle it.

2. The actress playing the DA is eating fr. I will definitely have to check out more of her work! Christopher Abbott has also been giving a wonderful performance these past few episodes. I’m such a big fan of his work and TCR has been a great addition. They truly are the backbone of the trial and have been doing a great job raising bigger issues/questions about Danny’s overall place.

3. Annabelle, Angelo, and Jerome taking the witness stand was a great addition. You could tell that they all were sort of empathetic to the internal struggles Danny has been dealing with(whether or not he deserved it in those specific situations). Jerome-I love you fr! I’ve loved his performances from these past two episodes and am grateful that he has been able to show a more gentle/vulnerable side to Danny and his alters.

4. Candy! I appreciate that the episode established that she was at the receiving end of abuse too. “Guilt or Grief, which one can you bear” is such a banger line and it was interesting to see how Candy reacted to it. I HATE that she did that to her own son but I get why she was so afraid. She wasn’t ready to lose everything so she decided push her own son further away by lying. Truly a shame fr! I hate Marlin so so so much! Appreciate the actor giving this role his all because he’s truly made Marlin such a despicable character lol. The look of heartbreak between Candy and Danny after she took the stand will haunt me.

5. The final scene! I had such a visceral reaction to this scene it was crazy! I knew that the binder clip was going to come back in a dangerous way. The look of solemn terror but also relief after Danny harms himself was so heartbreaking I legit started to sob. I do appreciate the show not showing the action of abuse or self harm but rather the characters reactions to it. I think this is a really smart way to emphasize the emotional/psychological toll it takes. I have a lot of questions about the outcome of Danny’s action in this scene but i guess we’ll find out more next week!

6. Spoilers!- From the set pictures and locations used during the filming of episode 10 it seems that whatever the outcome of the trial is Danny hopefully (eventually) gets sent to a mental facility upstate! Looks like some time has passed and Rya goes to visit Danny. He even has his scars from where he harmed himself! I’ll put some of the set pics below! This is truly saving me from having a full freak out about this episode lol.

Hopeful that we get to have some closure for Ari, Jonny, and the other alters in some capacity in the next episode. Hopefully Candy steps up in some way in the next episode as well. I also am looking forward for Danny’s defense (including Rya) to get a fucking win in the incoming parts of the trial. This show has truly done a great job giving example to the nuanced history mental illness has had within the social/judicial/political systems at play here in the U.S. Can’t believe we’re at the finale already! Looking forward to seeing these storylines get wrapped up. Great job all around! Bravo Tom!
