             “’Scuse me?”  It’s habit born of rebellion, born out of the sheer instinct of survival, born of years of some fucked up attempt to undo the need to please, the desire to see the little smiles of satisfaction at a job well done.   Wrong place, wrong time, the little voice, fractured and broken, of whatever was left of her common sense, tried to whisper, fighting against the flush of anger that had leapt to the surface of her thoughts and colored her cheeks at his barked command, as if she was some trained circus monkey, or dog, meant to roll over and play dead.   Something -- maybe the sharp twitch at the back of his jaw, or the thin press of his lips, made her pull up short, that same said sense of survival forcing her to swallow down the verbal lashing that had bubbled up after her first retort.   It was habit, too, the mirroring; the press of her lips, the jut of her jaw.   “So sorry, Colonel.”   She didn’t really sound it.  “I was not aware I had to ask permission to pee.”  Actually, what she wanted, was a smoke, and being cooped up and ordered around wasn’t making that need any less urgent.
