Platino esplosivo, reprise

I say “I would be open to trying more shoot-em-ups in the future” and not even a day later the universe is like “You want a shoot-em-up? I’ll give you a shoot-em-up.”
Task Force Kampas is a game for bullet hell pros, not li’l newbs like me. Okay, to be fair to myself, I’m not a total newb. I beat Cuphead! And I constantly remind myself of this fact. But for all its notorious difficulty, Cuphead at least eases you in to the bullet hell with a couple real easy bosses. Task Force Kampas does not.
The levels themselves are not that bad and they are so much fun. I’m regularly clearing the first two without taking any damage, and it feels amazing, your attack power growing like crazy while you blast straight through all the enemies... and then you get to it. The first boss. The Squid. You get hit once by its tricky patterns of bullets and suddenly all of the attack power you built up is gone, and on top of that you have to stop shooting so you can heal, slowing down the battle and giving you more opportunities to get hit, and on top of it all, while shooting clears the levels out and makes them easier, shooting the boss makes its patterns more difficult. So you die. And by you I of course mean me.
I could probably get past the Squid eventually with enough tenacity, but right now I’m feeling pretty demoralized by it. Since Task Force Kampas is a quick arcade-y thing, so I’ll probably pick it back up and try again once in a while.

Platino esplosivo

Ranking time for #121-130! There were a surprising number of arcade-y, high score-based games in this batch, which doesn’t really speak to the kind of gamer I am. Super Hexagon turned out to be really addicting, but I’ve still got an itch for longer games with good stories that wasn’t totally scratched here.
1. Life is Strange: True Colors - I didn’t even pick this one out of the bag, I just bought it and played it immediately, but I’m still counting it here because I make the rules. Not as good as LIS2 (yes 2 is my favorite screw you) but still pretty damn near perfect.
2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - Absolutely goofy and silly. Every lawyer character in this series needs to be disbarred, but I always love detective games and this was the first proper one I’d played in a long time. I missed them.
3. Super Hexagon - Do you know how many times I’ve said here, “This is a quick little game, so I’ll keep it downloaded and pick it up again every now and then”? Well, this is the first time I’ve actually meant it.
4. EXTREME MEATPUNKS FOREVER - I fully expected this to be an “I appreciate what you’re doing but it’s just not for me” type of game, but I genuinely enjoyed it a lot. Not recommended for the squeamish.
5. Old Man’s Journey - The puzzles are simple and often repetitive, but the art is what drew me in to this game. It’s really gorgeous.
6. Task Force Kampas - The Squid will haunt my nightmares forever
7. Imperishable Memories - My experience with this game was pretty middle-of-the-road. Visuals were awful but in like a good way, story was esoteric but not too opaque, and gameplay was new to me but extremely forgiving because I was playing in Story Mode.
8. Boa Retina - I can’t fault this at all for being a highly personal piece of experimental art. Felt a bit like reading someone’s diary. Having to write a blurb about this game reminded me of how terrifying the parent character is oh god oh god
9. Four Horsemen - I really wanted to like this game because the issues explored in it are very dear to my heart. But, unfortunately... well, you see how it’s ranked. Routes are confusing, plus the game is brutal and devastating yet simultaneously too goofy to take seriously.
10. The World Begins With You - You know, maybe I didn’t give this one a fair shot, but as this process has gone on I’ve learned to trust that part of me that says “You’re not having fun and that’s not going to change going forward. Don’t waste your time.”
I realize that only two games on this list were purchased on Steam and made by relatively big studios, and they got the top two spots. Everything below them is a little indie from the bundle. I feel kind of bad about how that shook out, and I don’t know if it’s bias towards things I dropped a significant amount of money on, or the fact that what I choose to get on Steam is much more curated to my tastes than the stuff I download from itch.io, or both (probably both).
